Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

The paper presents the results of optical dating of potassium-rich feldspar grains obtained from the Haua Fteah cave in Cyrenaica, northeast Libya, focussing on the chronology of the Deep Sounding excavated by Charles McBurney in the 1950s and re-excavated recently. Samples were also collected from a 1.25 m-deep trench (Trench S) excavated during the present project below the basal level of the Deep Sounding. Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) data sets for multi-grain, single aliquots of quartz for samples from the Middle Trench were previously published. Re-analyses of these OSL data confirm significant variation in the dose saturation levels of the …

Terahertz Spectroscopy Of 2,4-Dinitrotoluene Over A Wide Temperature Range (7−245 K), Lucia Lepodise, Josip Horvat, R A. Lewis

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Previous THz spectroscopy of the TNT explosive precursor, 2,4-dinitrotoluene (DNT), has been restricted to room temperature (apart from one set of data at 11 K). Here, for the first time, we investigate the spectrum as the temperature is systematically varied, from 7 to 245 K. Many new features appear in the spectrum on cooling below room temperature. As well as the five absorption lines observed previously, we observe five additional lines. In addition, a new room-temperature line at 8.52 THz (281 cm−1) is observed. Six of the lines red-shift with temperature and four of them blue-shift. The blue shift is …

Structural Evolution Of Electrodes In The Ncr And Cgr Cathode-Containing Commercial Lithium-Ion Batteries Cycled Between 3.0 And 4.5 V: An Operando Neutron Powder-Diffraction Study, Wei Kong Pang, Moshiul Alam, Vanessa K. Peterson, Neeraj Sharma

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The dissimilar lattice-evolution of the isostructural layered Li(Ni,Co,Al)O2 (NCR) and Li(Ni,Co,Mn)O2 (CGR) cathodes in commercial lithium-ion batteries during overcharging/discharging was examined using operando neutron powder-diffraction. The stacking axis (c parameter) of both cathodes expands on initial lithiation and contracts on further lithiation. Although both the initial increase and later decrease are smaller for the CGR cathode, the overall change between battery charged and discharged states of the c parameter is larger for the CGR (1.29%) than for the NCR cathode (0.33%). We find these differences are correlated to the transition metal to oxygen bond (as measured through …

Gas-Phase Reactions Of Aryl Radicals With 2-Butyne: An Experimental And Theoretical Investigation Employing The N-Methyl-Pyridinium-4-Yl Radical Cation, Adrian Lam, Cong Li, George Khairallah, Benjamin Kirk, Stephen Blanksby, Adam Trevitt, Uta Wille, Richard O'Hair, Gabriel Da Silva

Adam Trevitt

Aromatic radicals form in a variety of reacting gas-phase systems, where their molecular weight growth reactions with unsaturated hydrocarbons are of considerable importance. We have investigated the ion–molecule reaction of the aromatic distonic N-methyl-pyridinium-4-yl (NMP) radical cation with 2-butyne (CH3C≡CCH3) using ion trap mass spectrometry. Comparison is made to high-level ab initio energy surfaces for the reaction of NMP and for the neutral phenyl radical system. The NMP radical cation reacts rapidly with 2-butyne at ambient temperature, due to the apparent absence of any barrier. The activated vinyl radical adduct predominantly dissociates via loss of a H atom, with lesser …

Order-4 Orthogonal Cooperative Communication In Space-Time-Frequency Coded Mb-Ofdm Uwb, Zixuan Lin, Le C. Tran, Farzad Safaei

Professor Farzad Safaei

The combination of cooperative communication and Space-Time-Frequency-Codes (STFCs) has been recently proposed in the literature for Multiband OFDM Ultra-Wideband (MB-OFDM UWB) to improve the bit error performance, system capacity, data rate and wireless communications range. This paper proposes a cooperative communication design using Order-4 Orthogonal STFCs in MB-OFDM UWB systems, which is referred to as Order-4 Orthogonal Cooperative Communication Scheme (4-OCCS). It will be shown that 4-OCCS improves significantly the diversity and error performance of the MB-OFDM UWB system, compared to the conventional MB-OFDM UWB (without STFCs) as well as our Order-2 Orthogonal Cooperative Communication Scheme using Alamouti STFCs (2-OCCS) …

Professor Farzad Safaei

Recently, cooperative communication and Space-Time-Frequency-Codes (STFCs) have been introduced into the Multiband OFDM Ultra-Wideband (MB-OFDM UWB) to improve the reliability, data rate and system capacity. This paper proposes a cooperative communication scheme for a four source node MB-OFDM UWB system using Quasi-Orthogonal STFCs, which is referred to as order-4 Quasi-Orthogonal Cooperative Communication Scheme (4-QOCCS). Simulation results show that the proposed 4-QOCCS provides significantly better error performance over the conventional MB-OFDM UWB and our order-2 Orthogonal Cooperative Communication Scheme (2-OCCS) using the Alamouti STFCs, and even better than the order-4 Orthogonal Cooperative Communication Scheme (4-OCCS), which we have been recently proposed, …

Electrodeposition Of Pyrrole And 3-(4-Tert-Butylphenyl)Thiophene Copolymer For Supercapacitor Applications, Binbin Yue, Caiyun Wang, Pawel Wagner, Yang Yang, Xin Ding, David L. Officer, Gordon G. Wallace

Gordon Wallace

The electropolymerization of pyrrole (Py), 3-(4-tert-butylphenyl)thiophene (TPT) monomer or the mixed Py and TPT monomers on stainless steel mesh substrate were performed in 1 M LiClO4/acetonitrile solution. A much lower potential of 0.75 V was required for the co-electropolymerization of Py and TPT, in sharp contrast to that of 1.20 V for poly(3-(4-tert-butylphenyl)thiophene) (PTPT) formation. The resultant homopolymers and copolymer were characterized with FESEM and FTIR, and assembled into supercapacitors to investigate their electrochemical performances. The copolymer electrode delivered the highest specific capacitance of 291 F g−1 at a scan rate of 5 mV s−1, in comparison with that of …

Inkjet And Extrusion Printing Of Conducting Poly(3,4-Ethylenedioxythiophene) Tracks On And Embedded In Biopolymer Materials, Charles A. Mire, Animesh Agrawal, Gordon G. Wallace, Paul Calvert, Marc In Het Panhuis Mar 2013

Inkjet And Extrusion Printing Of Conducting Poly(3,4-Ethylenedioxythiophene) Tracks On And Embedded In Biopolymer Materials, Charles A. Mire, Animesh Agrawal, Gordon G. Wallace, Paul Calvert, Marc In Het Panhuis

Gordon Wallace

Two printing methods, extrusion and inkjet, are used to deposit tracks of PEDOT/PSS conducting polymer onto biopolymer films with a view to prepare implantable tissue mimics containing electronic devices. Extruded tracks offer lower printing resolution, but better electrical characteristics compared to inkjet printed tracks. The biopolymer–ink interaction results in narrower printed tracks compared to those on glass. This affects the final conductivity, which is lower for printed tracks on biopolymer than for lines printed on glass, due to the part of the track lying below the surface. Extrusion printing is used to embed tracks into a biopolymer matrix, resulting in …

A Three-Phase Power Flow Approach For Integrated 3-Wire Mv And 4-Wire Multigrounded Lv Networks With Rooftop Solar Pv, Md J E Alam, K M. Muttaqi, Darmawan Sutanto

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

With increasing level of rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) penetration into low voltage (LV) distribution networks, analysis with realistic network models is necessary for adequate capturing of network behavior. Traditional three-phase 3-wire power flow approach lacks the capability of exact analysis of 4-wire multigrounded LV networks due to the approximation of merging the neutral wire admittance into the phase wire admittances. Such an approximation may not be desirable when neutral wire and grounding effects need to be assessed, especially in the presence of single-phase solar power injection that may cause a significant level of network unbalance. This paper proposes a three-phase …

A Weak El Niño/Southern Oscillation With Delayed Seasonal Growth Around 4,300 Years Ago, H V. Mcgregor, M J. Fischer, M K. Gagan, David Fink, S J. Phipps, H Wong, C D. Woodroffe

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

Earth’s interannual climate variability is dominated by El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO). Palaeoclimate records indicate a lower ENSO variance during the middle Holocene compared with today1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6; however, model simulations have not reproduced the full magnitude of the changes7, 8, 9, 10, and whether external forcing drives large intrinsic ENSO variability11 is therefore a matter of considerable debate. Here we present a 175-year-long, monthly resolved oxygen isotope record, obtained from a Porites coral microatoll located on Kiritimati (Christmas) Island, in the NINO3.4 region of the central equatorial Pacific. Our quantitative record of ENSO variability about 4,300 years …

A Joint Theoretical And Experimental Study For Elastic Electron Scattering From 1,4-Dioxane, P Palihawadana, J P. Sullivan, S J. Buckman, Z Masin, J D. Gorfinkiel, F Blanco, G Garcia, M J. Brunger

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

We present results of measurements and calculations of elastic electron scattering from 1,4-dioxane in the energy range of 0–1000 eV. Absolute differential and integral elastic cross sections have been measured using a crossed electron-molecule beam spectrometer and the relative flow technique, at four energies in the 10–30 eV range and for scattered electrons in the angular range 20◦–129◦. The measured cross sections are compared with results from R-matrix computations, at the static exchange plus polarization level, calculated at energies between 0–20 eV, and with calculations employing the independent atom model with the screening corrected additivity rule (IAM-SCAR). Those latter computations …

It is always pleasing to see additional work undertaken on sedimentary successions that are critical to the understanding of Quaternary environmental changes. The deposits at Mary Ann Bay, as with other last interglacial (MIS 5e; 128-118 ka) coastal-marine successions in Tasmania, are critical for demonstrating that the region has experienced a different relative sea-level history to mainland southeastern Australia, and that parts of Tasmania have been uplifted by 16-17 m since the last interglacial maximum. Unfortunately, the recently published paper by Slee et al. (2012) gives credence to two thermoluminescence (TL) ages which must be inaccurate. In uncritically accepting the …

In particular the activities of validation scientists were coordinated by ESA within the ENVISAT Stratospheric Aircraft and Balloon Campaign or ESABC.
