Expedition To The Public Lands: Northeastern Us, Andrew Distasi
Expedition To The Public Lands: Northeastern Us, Andrew Distasi
CAFE Symposium 2026
This project takes you to 4 types of America's Public Lands: National Parks, National Wildlife Refuges, National Seashore, and National Forests. This trip takes place through a two-week period and three states. I will visit Cape Cod National Seashore, White Mountain National Forest, Maine Coastal Islands National Wildlife Refuge, and it will end in Acadia National Park. At each stop on the trip, I will be looking at "What to Do", the "History", and "Logistics" of each place. There is also one data analysis, done for Acadia National Park. Lastly, I also go over a unique management issue involving White …
Waters At Risk: Preventive Methods Against Cyanobacteria Blooms In Rhode Island, Ryan Boline
Waters At Risk: Preventive Methods Against Cyanobacteria Blooms In Rhode Island, Ryan Boline
CAFE Symposium 2026
This project analyzes the rise of cyanobacteria blooms in Rhode Island freshwater systems and identifies a policy gap in the state’s largely reactive management approach. Drawing on state reports and interviews with environmental experts, it highlights nutrient runoff, climate change, and limited public education as key drivers of bloom severity. To address this gap, I developed a prevention-focused public education poster designed for integration into existing state alert and outreach systems.

An Exploration Of The Public Lands: Kaibab National Forest, Glen Canyon Nra, Zion National Park, And Desert Nwr, Patrick Tobin
CAFE Symposium 2026
An exploration of a few of America's public lands shows how our views on nature can shape how and why we protect lands. In the Southwest, we see the ideas of "nature as commodity" and "nature as pristine and unchanging" pop up time and again. These main ideas are necessary in how we view the public lands, and how we enjoy them.
Paternalism Vs. Progress: Chile Under Michelle Bachelet, Sasha Ilchenko
Paternalism Vs. Progress: Chile Under Michelle Bachelet, Sasha Ilchenko
CAFE Symposium 2026
Following the end of Pinochet's dictatorial rule of Chile, the country became a presidential system in which voters could elect their representatives. Michelle Bachelet was elected as Chile's first female president in 2006, and, in 2014, she was reelected for a second term. I aim to compare how her gender influenced her policymaking decisions and the public's reaction to her presidency as well as how those two themes differed between Bachelet's two terms.
Beyond The Chessboard: How Chess Participation Can Improve Cognitive Performance, Siddiquee Siyam
Beyond The Chessboard: How Chess Participation Can Improve Cognitive Performance, Siddiquee Siyam
CAFE Symposium 2026
When I arrived at Gettysburg College, it was quite disappointing to me as a chess enthusiast that there was no platform to unite all players on campus. I took the initiative to address this issue by establishing the Gettysburg College Chess Federation (GCCF), only to realize that the GCCF’s activities could also be expanded to address a broader issue. With my first-year seminar (FYS) focusing on changemaking, I decided to turn my passion into my class project, implementing concrete work beyond the theoretical arena to not only promote chess on campus but also to start a teaching program with K-6 …
Hydrangeas And Its Cultural Significance At Gettysburg College, Lyz An
Hydrangeas And Its Cultural Significance At Gettysburg College, Lyz An
CAFE Symposium 2026
Hydrangeas, along with many other botanical plants, are often taken for granted. While originally used for landscaping methods, they also teach us the importance of warmth and influence the way we feel about certain environments in which they grow in. At Gettysburg College, these hydrangeas may not be intentionally grown at specific locations but play a dominant role in the way we connect with it.
Comparing Sociological Suicide Studies In The 1800s To Psychological Suicide Studies Now, Amanda Mic
Comparing Sociological Suicide Studies In The 1800s To Psychological Suicide Studies Now, Amanda Mic
CAFE Symposium 2026
Sociology can look at the numbers and explain to us the physical, concrete facts about when, where, and how suicides happen, but psychology gives us an explanation as to why it happens. This project looks into the ways that 19th century societal stigmas around suicide caused inaccuracies in the statistics that sociologists studied, and therefore their findings, as well as the abundance of discoveries on suicide and mental conditions by psychologists in more recent times.
Hillary Rodham Clinton's Roadblocks To Political Power, Molly Hayter
Hillary Rodham Clinton's Roadblocks To Political Power, Molly Hayter
CAFE Symposium 2026
My research delves into how Hillary Rodham Clinton's political career was impacted by misogyny and gendered backlash. She was represented unequally in the media in comparison to male politicians and faced criticism for displaying both male and female characteristics, yet she did not let her focus on gendered policy decisions fade as she tackled foreign policy in her role as Secretary of State.
The Moderating Role Of Self-Esteem In The Relationship Between Perceived Gender Bias And Job Satisfaction Among Women In The Technology Industry, Roberta L. Minicola
The Moderating Role Of Self-Esteem In The Relationship Between Perceived Gender Bias And Job Satisfaction Among Women In The Technology Industry, Roberta L. Minicola
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Women employed in the technology industry continue to experience gender-based bias that may adversely affect job satisfaction. Although the deleterious impact of gender bias on women’s job satisfaction has been well documented, the potential of self-esteem to mitigate this impact has not yet been examined. Informed by social dominance theory, the purpose of this quantitative, cross-sectional, correlational study was to examine the moderating effect of self-esteem on the relationship between perceived gender bias (i.e., insufficient support, devaluation, hostility) and job satisfaction among women working in the U.S. technology sector. Data were collected from 138 female technology professionals recruited through Amazon …
Teachers And Administrators' Perceptions Of School Resource Officers, Shameka J. Duncan
Teachers And Administrators' Perceptions Of School Resource Officers, Shameka J. Duncan
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
School Resource Officers (SROs) play a significant role in middle and high schools in Metro Atlanta; however little research has included the perceptions of school administrators and teachers about their roles. The purpose of this descriptive qualitative study was to explore the perceptions of teachers and administrators regarding the roles of SROs and their perspectives on the practices that could enhance collaboration among these stakeholders in ensuring school safety. Informed by Gregory’s theory of perception, the study investigated how educators and administrators described their interactions with SROs. Data was gathered via semi-structured interviews with three teachers and three administrators and …

Evaluating Partisan Registrations Amid The Electronic Registration Information Center Controversy, Jared Mcdonald, Alauna Safarpour, Michael Hanmer, Lisa Bryant
Political Science Faculty Publications
Election integrity is paramount to democratic health. The Electronic Registration Information Center (ERIC) is a multistate collaboration that facilitates essential election administration functions, whereby members share administrative data to ensure clean voter registration lists and to encourage individuals who are eligible but unregistered (EBUs) to register to vote. Despite ERIC’s primary focus on maintaining the accuracy of voter rolls, in 2022, some conservatives accused it of being a tool for partisan electioneering, prompting nine Republican-led states to leave ERIC. To assess the validity of a central criticism made against ERIC, the authors leverage field experiments conducted by member states during …

A Matter Of Detail: An Interview With Andrew Brandel, Sandra Laugier, And Perig Pitrou, Andrew Brandel, Sandra Laugier, Perig Pitrou, Gloria Fall, Tomas De Oliveira, Anna Wood, Maddalena Canna
Transatlantic Forum
This interview centers on A Matter of Detail, a collaborative volume that brings anthropology and philosophy into conversation through a shared concern with the concept and practice of detailing. Structured in three movements, the discussion begins with broad, conceptual questions about the aims of the book, including its refusal of a teleological and Eurocentric history of “detail” and its proposal to approach detail not as a fixed object but as a dynamic mode of attention. The editors reflect on how detailing operates across disciplines, not as the accumulation of facts, but as a way of articulating what matters and to …
Determinants Of Clinical Supervisor Self-Efficacy In Substance Use Disorder Counseling, Victoria A. Nagel
Determinants Of Clinical Supervisor Self-Efficacy In Substance Use Disorder Counseling, Victoria A. Nagel
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Substance use disorder counselors face increasing challenges in responding to a growing and more severely affected population, often presenting with co-occurring mental health conditions and complex clinical needs. Clinical supervision plays a critical role in supporting counselor development, yet little is known about the factors that contribute to clinical supervisors’ self-efficacy in providing supervision for alcohol and drug counselors. The purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to examine whether years of counseling experience, years of substance use disorder (SUD) counseling experience, years as a clinical supervisor, professional counseling credentials, and supervisory credentials predicted self-efficacy among clinical supervisors. This study …
Rewriting Betrayal: The Political Memory Of Andrei Vlasov And His Russian Liberation Army, Christian N. Adams
Rewriting Betrayal: The Political Memory Of Andrei Vlasov And His Russian Liberation Army, Christian N. Adams
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
This study examines the evolving historiography of Andrei Vlasov and the Russian Liberation Army (ROA) from the end of World War II to the post-Soviet era. Drawing on Soviet, émigré, and Western sources, it traces how interpretations of Vlasov’s defection reflected shifting moral and political frameworks in Russia’s collective memory. The analysis demonstrates that portrayals of Vlasov, from Stalinist condemnations to post-Soviet reappraisals, mirror the state’s changing relationship to patriotism, legitimacy, and dissent. By comparing Cold War scholarship with contemporary Russian debates, this paper argues that the Vlasov question endures not because of mere intrigue, but because it embodies the …

Survivors Of Sexual Trauma: Abortion Experiences Of Black Women In The Southern United States, Katie Grace Geter
Survivors Of Sexual Trauma: Abortion Experiences Of Black Women In The Southern United States, Katie Grace Geter
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Women who experience both sexual trauma and abortion within their lifetime are highly likely to struggle with serious mental health symptoms; however, social work students and practitioners lack education and knowledge on how to serve these women. Recent events, including the uprising of gender and race related movements, COVID-19, heightened political division, and increased governmental control on abortion rights also impact social-work practice. Acknowledging intersectionality, the purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the experiences of abortion for Black women in the Southern United States who have a history of sexual trauma. The experiences of 6 Black women with …
The Politics Of Territorial Resistance To Federal Authority: Distinctiveness, Partisanship, And Outbidding In Texas And Alberta, André Lecours, Alexandre Couture Gagnon, Daniel Béland
The Politics Of Territorial Resistance To Federal Authority: Distinctiveness, Partisanship, And Outbidding In Texas And Alberta, André Lecours, Alexandre Couture Gagnon, Daniel Béland
School of Political Science, Public Affairs, Legal and Security Studies Faculty Publications
Federalism involves political struggles around the territorial division of powers. Typically, these struggles tend to occur when the federal government seeks to act in areas of constituent unit jurisdiction. Yet, recent political developments in Texas (Operation Lone Star) and Alberta (Alberta Sovereignty in a United Canada Act) have showcased state/provincial governments seeking to reject federal legislation within seemingly federal jurisdictions. This article develops an explanation for these initiatives that emphasizes regionalism as a form of territorial politics, the partisan dynamics between the state/provincial government and its federal counterpart, and the internal competition within the dominant political …
Human Capital And Labor Market Effects Of Elite Schooling In England, Scotland, And Wales: New Causal Evidence From Nonparametric Bounds, Zhanhan Yu, Vikesh Amin, Carlos A. Flores, Alfonso Flores-Lagunes, Giuseppe Germinario
Human Capital And Labor Market Effects Of Elite Schooling In England, Scotland, And Wales: New Causal Evidence From Nonparametric Bounds, Zhanhan Yu, Vikesh Amin, Carlos A. Flores, Alfonso Flores-Lagunes, Giuseppe Germinario
Upjohn Institute Working Papers
We estimate the causal effect of attending elite schools in England, Scotland, and Wales on human capital and labor market outcomes for cohorts of children from the 1958 National Child Development Study and the 1970 British Cohort Study. For identification, we employ a nonparametric partial-identification approach that provides bounds on the causal effect by assuming that, on average, there is positive selection into elite school attendance, and that attending an elite school does not worsen average potential human capital or labor market outcomes. The bounds indicate that there could possibly be large education and labor market returns from attending an …

The Effect Of Social Media On Orthodontics: The Patient And Practitioner Perspective, Corban Ward, Jacob Marx, Man Hung, Samuel Dyal, Alicia Parry
Annual Research Symposium
Introduction Social media now shapes how people find information, connect and form identity. It increasingly influences cultural standards around health and appearance. In orthodontics, these platforms are reshaping public perceptions, attitudes and treatment decisions. This review synthesizes existing research on social media’s impact on how people view and choose orthodontic care.
Methods A PRISMA guided review searched PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science for peer-reviewed English-language studies published between 2015 and 2025. Using terms such as “social media,” “orthodontic treatment,” “dental esthetics,” “perception,” we included studies assessing how social media shapes public beliefs, behaviors, and self-perception related to orthodontic care. …

Exploring The Efficacy Of Storytelling In Education About Climate Change, Nina Adjanin, Srijana Katuwal, Heidi Sevestre, Gordon Brooks
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
From bedtime tales to digital narratives, stories wield unparalleled influence, shaping perceptions, and fostering empathy. Through mediums like social media and digital platforms, storytelling becomes a tool for advocacy, amplifying voices, and catalyzing social change. In this qualitative study, 107 higher education students from diverse backgrounds participated. The purpose of this study was to uncover salient beliefs about climate change stories on popular social media platforms among full-time college students. The results are based on three key components of the theory of planned behavior (TPB): affective beliefs, normative beliefs, and control beliefs. The respondents expressed both positive and negative attitudes …

Curriculum Materials Cataloged For Browsing, Michelle Emanuel
Mississippi Libraries
When the University of Mississippi Libraries acquired a collection of state-adopted school textbooks for K-12 from its School of Education, a decision was made to catalog the collection for browsing to anticipate the needs of its primary users, both “in service” and “pre-service” teachers. The textbooks would be grouped according to their grade level, and cuttered by subject area, instead of being classed according to its subject area. As the collection would be integrated into the regular circulating collection, and not into a curriculum materials center, issues arose for both technical services and access services throughout the process, from cataloging …
The Last Human Place: Efficiency Is Killing Libraries, Gabriel Morley
The Last Human Place: Efficiency Is Killing Libraries, Gabriel Morley
Mississippi Libraries
This essay argues that libraries should de-prioritize efficiency. Instead, libraries should promote their value around connective labor, which is the human work of attention, care, and emotional understanding. Libraries are increasingly dominated by automation, data metrics, and speed. This essay puts forward the idea that libraries should shift focus to human relationships as an organizing principle. Drawing on Allison Pugh’s concept of connective labor, this essay contends that human-to-human engagement is essential infrastructure, as vital as technology or buildings. Efficiency-focused metrics like circulation and attendance fail to capture the deeper social function libraries play in communities and on campuses related …
