The Alliance for Texas History is pleased to announce a new feature in the Journal of Texas History, called “Vantage Points,” a fresh way to engage with the past. This section presents short, focused essays (1,500—4,000 words) centered on evocative images, documents, or historical sites. Each essay begins from a particular vantage point—quite literally a place, object, or source in the field—and explores what it can teach us about the Texas past.

The Names Of Four Scouts: Slavery, Settler Colonialism, And The Limits Of Incorporation At The Texas Capitol Complex Since 1983, Mark Mallory

Journal of Texas History

This essay takes the commemorated names of four Seminole Negro Indian Scout Medal of Honor recipients to examine public memory at the Texas Capitol Complex since 1983. Using archival documents, newspapers, exhibits, and monuments, it traces how the Texas State Preservation Board responded to criticism through limited incorporations of Black, Tejano, and women’s histories while preserving narratives that disavow slavery and settler colonialism. It argues that these incorporations reinforce a framework centered on Texas “pioneers,” obscuring Native histories and misrepresenting the complex intersections of Blackness and Indigeneity embodied by Black Seminole history.

Albert Parsons And The Nonpareil Strike Of 1871: Race And Labor In Reconstruction Texas, George Norris Green

Journal of Texas History

This article explores a little-known chapter in the life of anarchist Albert Parsons and illustrates the complexities of race and class in Reconstruction Texas. Loyal to the administration of Republican Texas Governor Edmund J. Davis, Parsons helped break a strike of white supremacist printers in Austin. His allegiance to the cause of African American rights superseded class solidarity with the printers. Less than two decades later, Parsons died while supporting striking workers in Chicago.

The First Juneteenth: Black Churches, Reconstruction Politics, And The Houston Origins Of June 19 Celebrations, W. Caleb Mcdaniel

While Galveston is rightly renowned as the birthplace of Juneteenth, this article argues that Houston played an equally foundational role in the origins of the holiday as the site of the first recorded public celebration of June 19 as an anniversary of freedom. Drawing on new research in a rare newspaper, it examines the circumstances that led Black Houstonians to celebrate June 19, 1866, identifying the leaders and locations of the Houston event for the first time. Finally, it connects the first Juneteenth to two related histories: the establishment of independent Black churches in Texas after slavery and the politics …

A marketing class assigns student groups to crisis management cases involving companies where something went wrong. How did those companies respond to the crisis? How did they communicate with stakeholders? Where were mistakes made? While quarterly financial statements can show the financial impact of a crisis, earnings calls offer something different: insight into how companies explain, frame, and respond to those events in real time. Because earnings calls happen quarterly, they can be used to track a crisis from its initial impact to its immediate fallout and longer-term repercussions. As of 2025, there are over 1.8 million people incarcerated in the United States, but only 6% hold an associate degree or higher. Yet research shows that earning even an associate’s degree can reduce recidivism by 85%. Given the higher rate of incarcerated individuals in Southern states, higher education in prison has the power to transform lives. These programs, however, must work around restrictions set by a state’s department of corrections, which can often lead to disparities between their experience and those of students on campus. These restrictions impact research and other programs supported by academic librarians.

This was the keynote presentation at the 2026 Midwest Business Librarian Summit. The talk introduced the Partners for AI Literacy (PAL) program, which fosters partnership between instructors and students for a more collaborative, holistic response to AI in learning environments. The slides walk through the pedagogical rationale behind the program, overviews the model and conceptual framework guiding PAL, and highlights insights from past PAL cohorts. It concludes with suggestions for several ways pedagogical partnership might be applied in varying library contexts.

In this essay I take on the subject of grades in sport management education. While grades are used as a measure of success across higher education, they are an imperfect measure of achievement and learning and have major limitations in terms of student employability. The ungrading movement brings attention to the ways grades can harm learning by shifting attention away from students’ development, and instructor or peer feedback, and intrinsic motivation, while incentivizing compliance and risk-aversion. Platform work is increasingly promoted as a strategy for employment generation in the Philippines. The Philippine Labor Force Survey of 2021 reported that around 1.7 million gig workers are engaged by online platforms or mobile applications, with many depending on it as their primary livelihood. Yet the rapid expansion of platform labor as a livelihood opportunity is unfolding alongside intensifying climate disruption and technological transformation. Extreme heat, flooding, supertyphoons, unstable power infrastructure, and digital dependency are creating new forms of vulnerability for platform workers—many of whom already operate under precarious and weakly protected labor conditions. This thesis examines how structural inequality shapes the experience of perinatal care among pregnant individuals and healthcare providers in South Florida, with particular attention to how risk is perceived and communicated, how trust between patients and providers is built or eroded, and how medical decision-making unfolds under conditions of structural vulnerability. Drawing on multi-sited ethnographic fieldwork conducted between October 2025 and April 2026, supplemented by a quantitative analysis of low-birth-weight rates across all 67 Florida counties, the project analyzes how risk is defined, communicated, and lived across community-based prenatal organizations, online educational platforms, and in-depth provider and patient interviews. This research aimed to discover if maternal attachment style moderates the association between maternal stress and postpartum depressive symptoms for mothers living in the United States. Previous research has indicated a trend of maternal bonding mediating the association between postpartum depression and maternal stress. In this study, attachment theory was utilized as the foundational theory for understanding whether the link between maternal stress and postpartum depressive symptoms vary as a function of maternal attachment style. Male veterans are often the least likely to report military sexual trauma (MST), increasing the experience of shame, fear, fragility, and mental health disorders. The primary goal of this study was to examine the relationship of shame (internal and external), attitudes towards disclosure, and resilience on mental health help-seeking in male veterans who have experienced sexual abuse while in the military. Brown’s theory of shame resilience guided the development of the hypotheses and interpretation of results.
