Characterizing DNA methylation patterns is important for addressing key questions in evolutionary biology, development, geroscience, and medical genomics. While costs are decreasing, whole-genome DNA methylation profiling remains prohibitively expensive for most population-scale studies, creating a need for cost-effective, reduced representation approaches (i.e., assays that rely on microarrays, enzyme digests, or sequence capture to target a subset of the genome). Most common whole genome and reduced representation techniques rely on bisulfite conversion, which can damage DNA resulting in DNA loss and sequencing biases. Enzymatic methyl sequencing (EM-seq) was recently proposed to overcome these issues, but thorough benchmarking of EM-seq combined with …

Essays In Empirical Asset Pricing, Jiaen Li May 2025

Essays In Empirical Asset Pricing, Jiaen Li

Olin Business School Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

My dissertation explores two broad questions. First, what is the role of intangible forces like ideological narratives in belief formation and asset prices? Second, how can we understand the systematic components in asset pricing? In Chapter 1, using cryptocurrencies as a laboratory, I examine the role of ideological narratives in asset prices—an area remains underexplored. Leveraging social media data and large language models to measure ideology dynamics, I find that fluctuations in two ideological narratives—anarchism and decentralization—are priced in the cross-section of cryptocurrency returns. Consistent with the view that factors proxy for state variables, ideology factors contain distinct information about …

Essays In Corporate Governance And Financial Intermediation, Renping Li May 2025

Essays In Corporate Governance And Financial Intermediation, Renping Li

Olin Business School Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Antitrust regulations in banking have historically targeted commercial banking activities. In the first chapter, I ask does the consolidation of investment banks have competitive effects? Using the geographically fragmented municipal bond underwriting market as a natural laboratory and employing a stacked difference-in-differences specification, I find that the underwriting spread increases by 4.8% of its sample mean following within-market consolidation. The effects double for larger M&As or in more concentrated markets and do not dissipate over time. These M&As do not generate efficiency gains that manifest as lower bond yields or substitution of other issuer-paid services. The findings remain robust when …

The Impact Of Benefits Cliffs And Asset Limits On Low-Wage Workers: New Evidence From A Nationally Representative Survey, Stephen Roll, Selina Miller, Mathieu Despard May 2025

The Impact Of Benefits Cliffs And Asset Limits On Low-Wage Workers: New Evidence From A Nationally Representative Survey, Stephen Roll, Selina Miller, Mathieu Despard

Center for Social Development Research

Over 40 million workers in the United States receive public benefits. Many face a challenge: They would like to earn higher wages, take on more hours, or accept better jobs, but doing so can push them over benefit-program limits, causing them to lose eligibility or experience reductions in the benefits they need to make ends meet. This is also an issue for employers, whose ability to attract and retain talent is affected when the workforce’s employment decisions are driven by concerns about public benefit eligibility. Drawing on data from the Workforce Economic Inclusion and Mobility (WEIM) survey administered to a …

Early widowhood is characterized by chronic stress and is associated with a higher risk of incident depression and cardiovascular-related morbidity and mortality. Peripheral inflammation is involved in the pathogenesis of major depressive disorder and atherothrombosis and may represent a common mechanism underlying widow(er)'s elevated risk for both health conditions. Chronic psychological stress sensitizes the release of proinflammatory cytokines during the peripheral stress response. The present study examined whether recent spousal bereavement enhances the inflammatory response to an acute, psychological stressor. Recently widowed older adults (n = 143) and non-widowed controls (n = 69) participated in a quasi-experimental study, during which …

Topics in Exercise Science and Kinesiology

Topics in Exercise Science and Kinesiology Volume 6: Issue 1, Article 6, 2025. Efforts to promote physical activity and other health-related behaviors are more effective when resource materials are understood by a wide and diverse audience. Before our lab’s previous investigations (Thomas et al., 2024), only one study seemed to use the cloze procedure to directly test the comprehension (i.e., readability) of physical activity promotion material (Cardinal & Seidler, 1995). Thus, this rapid literature review sought to (a) determine the extent the cloze procedure has been used to study physical activity promotion material comprehension in lay adults and (b) collate …

[2025 Honorable Mention] Ice: Trauma, And The War On Immigrant Families, Brittney M. Williams

Ethnic Studies Research Paper Award

This paper exposes how immigration enforcement under the Trump administration’s second term has crossed the line from policy to persecution. ICE is operating like a secret police force, using fear tactics and legal loopholes to tear families apart without cause or due process. The impact is not theoretical. It is real, measurable, and devastating. Children are being taken from schools. Parents are disappearing without explanation. Communities are being pushed into silence and survival mode. This paper focuses on the trauma being inflicted, especially on immigrant youth, and the way outdated laws like the Alien Enemies Act are being twisted to …

Reassessing Policy Responses To Irregular Migration In Receiving Democracies: A Process-Tracing Analysis Of Transactional Migration Governance, Otoniel Ramos May 2025

Reassessing Policy Responses To Irregular Migration In Receiving Democracies: A Process-Tracing Analysis Of Transactional Migration Governance, Otoniel Ramos

Student Research

This policy brief analyzes the growing use of transactional migration agreements (TMAs) by receiving democracies—bilateral arrangements that exchange financial or diplomatic concessions for the external enforcement of migration control. While politically expedient, TMAs often generate long-term strategic liabilities: they reduce state control over enforcement outcomes, expose receiving states to coercive leverage by partner states, and weaken normative commitments to transparency and rights protection. Using analytic process tracing and formal modeling, this paper identifies four recurring mechanisms by which TMAs evolve into systems of asymmetric dependence. It then evaluates three alternative policy frameworks—Exit Doctrine, Legal Category Reform, and a Structured Conditionality …

Is Manifestation Just A Secular Tawakkul?, Essraa Nawar

Library Articles and Research

"

In recent years, the concept of manifestation has surged in popularity — especially among Gen Z and millennials. Vision boards, affirmation journals, scripting, and social media reels promise that if you just 'believe it hard enough,' the universe will deliver your desires. Rooted in the New Thought movement and later popularized by books like The Secret, manifestation is often promoted as a spiritual law: think positively, align your energy, and attract what you want.

But as I sat with friends over karak tea last night, we found ourselves deep in conversation about this very trend. One of them …

To address these challenges, an end-to-end concatenated Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) attention model has been proposed for automatic …

Space And Attention In The Kyrgyz Demonstrative System, E. Ótott-Kovács, T. Kubatova, H. Saunders, Jonathan North Washington May 2025

Space And Attention In The Kyrgyz Demonstrative System, E. Ótott-Kovács, T. Kubatova, H. Saunders, Jonathan North Washington

Linguistics Faculty Works

Based on novel empirical work on the Kyrgyz (Turkic) nine-term demonstrative system, this paper investigates the spatial uses of demonstratives and the relationship between demonstratives' attention-drawing and spatial denotations, which has been a fundamental question for the study of demonstrative semantic content (Skilton 2019, Levinson 2018). While Kyrgyz, similarly to Turkish (Küntay & Özyürek 2002, 2006), appears to have a specialized attention-drawing demonstrative indicating that attention-drawing and spatial denotations can be entirely distinct, careful elicitations reveal that attention drawing is derived from a (joint-attention) sociocentric distal meaning.
