Benefits And Challenges Of Collaborative Networks Addressing Food System Disruptions During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Dikshya Dahal, Tania Schusler

School of Environmental Sustainability: Faculty Publications and Other Works

The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted food systems with disproportionate impacts on marginalized social groups, which in the USA included racial and ethnic minorities, working class families, immigrants, seniors, and people with disabilities, among others. The pandemic also greatly affected the operations of nonprofit organizations, which play important roles in disaster response. We explored how social networks supported non-profit organizations’ efforts to address increased food insecurity and food-related business disruptions during the pandemic in the Chicago region, IL, USA. We used mixed methods including a Social Network Analysis (SNA) of 48 organizations and their reported partners plus focus group discussions with representatives …

Unframing Spatial Presence And Resonating Aesthetic Presence : A “Continuous Interaction” Of Visitor Engagement With Chinese Art, Yi Zhu Jun 2025

Unframing Spatial Presence And Resonating Aesthetic Presence : A “Continuous Interaction” Of Visitor Engagement With Chinese Art, Yi Zhu

Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)

Digital technologies, as a prevalent method of display in museums, has been widely used in the presentation and creation of Chinese art, such as software, hardware, and interactive installations in exhibitions. According to Peng Feng (2022), digital technologies can effectively disseminate Chinese classical artworks while enriching visitors’ experience, enhancing their perceptions of aesthetic concepts and facilitating their understanding of the artworks. However, current studies are primarily focused on the social and cultural background information conveyed by the objects, rather than the visitor experiences in the process of interaction with the artworks. Digital technologies can engage visitors through active interaction with …

Background: NLRP2 is a subcortical maternal complex (SCMC) protein of mammalian oocytes and preimplantation embryos. SCMC proteins are encoded by maternal effect genes and play a pivotal role in the maternal-to-zygotic transition (MZT), early embryogenesis, and epigenetic (re)programming. Maternal inactivation of genes encoding SCMC proteins has been linked to infertility and subfertility in mice and humans, but the underlying molecular mechanisms for the diverse functions of SCMC proteins, and specifically the role of NLRP2, are incompletely understood.

Results: We profiled the DNA methylome of pre-ovulatory germinal-vesicle (GV) oocytes from Nlrp2-null, heterozygous (Het), and wild-type (WT) female mice and assessed the …

Perceptions Of Spirituality And Of God: A Psychological Qualitative Study, Christopher E. Peck, Timothy B. Smith, Jamila Mastny Jun 2025

Perceptions Of Spirituality And Of God: A Psychological Qualitative Study, Christopher E. Peck, Timothy B. Smith, Jamila Mastny

Faculty Publications

The majority of people living in the U.S. report that spirituality is an important part of their life that is influential to their well-being. However, individuals vary widely in how they conceptualize spirituality, which often stems from and overlaps with their conceptualizations of God or so-called “God image”. Examination of people’s experiences of spirituality and conceptualization of God can enable psychologists to improve their understanding of individuals’ core personal experiences. This study evaluates both spirituality and God image, as well as the relationship between these two constructs, using qualitative hermeneutic analysis of interviews with 63 adults (51% women, 49% men, …

Background: Morbidity and mortality of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is increased in metabolic disorders. However, options for preventing and treating these prevalent outcomes are limited. Intramyocardial lipotoxicity contributes to cardiac dysfunction. Here, we investigate the mechanisms underlying EDEM2 (endoplasmic reticulum degradation-enhancing alpha-mannosidase-like protein 2) regulation of cardiac lipid homeostasis and assess strategies that inhibit the incidence and progression of HFpEF.

Methods: Metabolic stress was induced in C57BL/6 male mice using a high-fat diet and Nω-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester. The recombinant adeno-associated virus 9 delivery system was used for loss- and gain-of-function studies. Palmitic acid and oleic acid …

Loss of function in the chromatin remodeler CHD7 causes CHARGE syndrome, characterized by variable penetrance and diverse abnormalities. However, establishing genotype-phenotype correlations has been challenging, as most CHD7 inactivating mutations are null alleles. Through CHD7 missense variant analysis at potential phosphorylation sites, we identified T730 (T720 in mice) as a critical residue associated with pathogenesis. Using a CHD7 T730 missense variant (Chd7T720A) and a frameshift null allele (Chd7fs) in a mouse model, we found that Chd7fs/fs mice were non-viable, while Chd7fs/+ mice exhibited haploinsufficiency-related circling behavior. Notably, Chd7fs/T720A mice died before postnatal …

Geography Faculty Publications and Presentations

Microplastics are found in Earth’s atmosphere, lithosphere, hydrosphere, pedosphere, and ecosphere. While there is a growing interest and need to solve this grand challenge in both the academic and policy realms, few have engaged with academics, policymakers, and community partners to co-identify the problem, co-design research, and co-produce knowledge in tackling this issue. Using a convergence research framework, we investigated the perception of microplastic pollution among different end users, delivered educational materials to K-12 teachers and practitioners, and identified key sampling points for assessing environmental microplastic concentrations in the Columbia River Basin, United States. Three community partner workshops identified regional …

Department of Neurosurgery Faculty Papers

INTRODUCTION: Time-driven activity-based costing (TDABC) is a highly accurate method for determining the true cost of delivering a healthcare service. However, TDABC is most often applied to a singular phase of care such as an outpatient visit or a surgical event. Here we broaden the scope by using TDABC to estimate the costs of surgically treating cervical myelopathy - from the moment of surgical scheduling until post-operative hospital discharge.

METHODS: In a single-center retrospective study at a large tertiary academic institution, TDABC was employed to measure pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative (inpatient) costs for 63 patients undergoing elective surgery for cervical …

Servant Leadership And Team Cohesion: The Mediating Roles Of Procedural Justice And Service Culture, Tyler Norris, Dalia L. Diab

Servant Leadership: Theory & Practice

This study examined the relationships among servant leadership, team cohesion, service culture, and procedural justice. It was hypothesized that service culture and procedural justice would mediate the relationship between servant leadership and team cohesion. A total of 125 participants were recruited using Prolific, and after data cleaning, 120 participants’ responses were retained. Results supported the study hypotheses, such that service culture and procedural justice fully mediated the relationship between servant leadership and team cohesion. These findings imply that the positive correlation between servant leadership and team cohesion is mediated by a culture that promotes procedural justice and service. By treating …

How Far-Right Populism Harms Ethnic Minorities’ Health: The Case Of The United States, Dina Rosenberg Jun 2025

How Far-Right Populism Harms Ethnic Minorities’ Health: The Case Of The United States, Dina Rosenberg

Working Papers Series

Public health is a political issue, and the health of ethnic minorities is a key component of it. We argue that far-right populism, whether grassroots or elitist, harms the health of immigrants and minorities. Anti-minority attitudes and policies—such as health chauvinism promoted by far-right populists—along with hate rhetoric and ensuing personal and institutional discrimination create a climate of hostility that negatively affects health outcomes in underprivileged communities. We hypothesize that immigrants and ethnic minorities living in such a climate are more likely to experience health problems and underutilize healthcare. To test this, we leverage the significant variation between U.S. states …

Arts-Based Sustainability: From New York To Malawi, Martha B. Lerski Jun 2025

Arts-Based Sustainability: From New York To Malawi, Martha B. Lerski

Publications and Research

Recognizing that libraries serve multiple constituencies and subject areas, this chapter documents and advocates for development of transdisciplinary arts-based research (ABR) and culture-related projects linked to environmental challenges. Libraries contribute collections and spaces, as well as the research of library and information scientists. Libraries are currently among invisible contributors to sustainability planning and services. The chapter will link this invisibility to the value of what visual arts refer to as negative space elements in subjects ranging from traditional ecological knowledge to environmental science. Library collections, projects, and research contribute to education for sustainable development (ESD) as required to achieve the …

Walk A Mile: Exploring Cause-Based Charity Event Participation As A Catalyst For Increasing Physical Activity Behavior, Kimberly S. Fasczewski, Andrey A. Sanko Posada, Meg Hopkins

Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences

Despite the known benefits of physical activity (PA), more than half of U.S. adults do not meet the American College of Sports Medicine’s PA recommendations for health, often resulting in negative health outcomes. Developing programming that increases motivation for PA participation is critical for healthcare professionals to combat physical inactivity. Previous research has demonstrated that framing disease-based PA charity fundraising events as “helping a cause” improved motivation for PA due to the individual’s emotional connection to the cause. There is currently no congruent research on motivation for participation in cause-based charity events. Behavioral economics theory posits that cognitive, emotional, and …

#Clandestini: How Italy's Center-Right Parliamentary Coalition Frames The Migrant Crisis On Social Media, Jenna Lynn Depasquale

Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation examines the intersection of Italian neo-fascism, the Mediterranean migrant crisis, and digital media. Through a qualitative content analysis of the Twitter and Instagram posts made by Italy's center-right parliamentary coalition from 2014-2018, this research outlines frameworks that facilitate both the physical and social deaths of migrants. Twitter is a platform on which bite-sized xenophobic messages characterize migrants as criminals, spoiled youth, spreaders of infectious disease, and future terrorists--sometimes in a contradictory fashion. Instagram is a medium for conveying Italian identity and history, which disregards the longstanding contributions of people of color, including Muslims, in Southern Italy. Comment sections …

Social Experiences Of Individuals With Autism In Adolescence And Adulthood: A Literature Review, Nichole Dumlao, F. Richard Ferraro

Arts & Sciences Undergraduate Showcase

This literature review examines social experiences of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) during adolescence and adulthood, addressing a critical knowledge gap regarding developmental trajectories and support needs across the lifespan. Despite increased ASD awareness, individuals face persistent social challenges, with research showing concerning rates of isolation. The purpose of this review is to understand how sensory processing differences and atypical gaze behaviors contribute to social outcomes in ASD. As such, three key questions were asked: How do social participation patterns change from adolescence to adulthood? What sensory-based subtypes exist within ASD? How do different gaze behavior patterns relate to …

Demystifying Black Men’S Relationship Experiences: A Relational Cultural Exploration Of Connection And Disconnection, Taeja Monique Mitchell

Tennessee State University Alumni Theses and Dissertations

[ABSTRACT] The purpose of this dissertation is to explore the ways in which Black men perceive connection and enact disconnection in their relationships. This study utilized relational cultural theory (Jordan, 2010, 2018) as an interpretive framework to explore and understand Black men’s relational development with special attention on connection and disconnection. Relational Cultural Theory (RCT) posits that sociocultural factors contribute to relational development, patterns, and images, which impact Black men’s capacity to connect with others. The most salient sociocultural factors that contribute to Black men’s relational experiences include racial socialization, myths about Black men, shame and societal pressure, and psychological …

UNH Personality Lab

Introduction: The model of emotional intelligence as an ability has evolved since its introduction 35 years ago. The revised model includes that emotional intelligence (EI) is a broad intelligence within the Cattell-Horn-Carroll (CHC) model of intelligence, and that more areas of problem solving are involved than originally detailed. An argument is made here that veridical scoring of EI test responses is a sound procedure relative to scoring keys based on expert consensus or a single emotion theory. To the degree that EI fits present-day theories of intelligence (i.e., the CHC model), any subsidiary factors of EI reasoning should correlate highly …

Social-Emotional Learning (Sel) Support Through Social Work Case Management In K-12 Schools, Dina Michelle Garrett-Parker

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Existing research revealed that K-12, school-based social work clinicians were utilized in various ways to support students' social-emotional learning (SEL) needs in public K-12 schools in the United States. However, there was a gap in knowledge about the unique approaches K-12 school-based social work clinicians employed to address the SEL needs of non-at-risk students. This basic qualitative study explored how K-12 school-based social work clinicians used empowerment case management practices to address the SEL needs of non-at-risk students. The theoretical framework grounding this study was empowerment theory. Using purposive sampling, semistructured interviews were conducted with five K-12 school-based social work …

The global utility of acceptance and commitment therapy highlights the need for adapting measures that can effectively capture the richness of psychological flexibility. One such instrument is the Comprehensive Assessment of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy Processes (CompACT). We translated the CompACT into Luganda and adapted it for use in Uganda. The original CompACT was translated into the Luganda language and reviewed through a series of evaluations. Nine mental health professionals participated in one-on-one interviews, while a focus group of eight culturally competent laypersons provided further insights. Their feedback resulted in revisions to enhance the instrument’s clarity, relevance, acceptability and completeness. …
