Meaningful Legislative Conflict: The Role Of Party Competition, Nader Omar Alghoul Jan 2025

Meaningful Legislative Conflict: The Role Of Party Competition, Nader Omar Alghoul

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation explores the influence of legislative conflict, defined by party polarization, relational animosities, and majority size, on legislative productivity in the U.S. Congress. While prior studies have focused on party polarization, divided government, and relational conflict, this research broadens the analysis by incorporating majority size as a key determinant of legislative accomplishment. The research will affirm that moderate polarization sharpens policy debates and enhances productivity, while extreme polarization, particularly when combined with significant relational conflict, results in legislative gridlock. Importantly, this research adds majority size to the amalgam of conflict and uncovers a curvilinear pattern: modest majorities improve legislative …

Avoiding The Anxious Self: The Role Of Self-Concept Clarity, Alexithymia, And Experiential Avoidance In Social Anxiety, Allison Graham Jan 2025

Avoiding The Anxious Self: The Role Of Self-Concept Clarity, Alexithymia, And Experiential Avoidance In Social Anxiety, Allison Graham

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Self-related processes play a significant role in the development and maintenance ofsocial anxiety, yet existing cognitive models have yet to fully elaborate these processes. This thesis explores how experiential dimensions of the self contribute to the organization of the self-concept among individuals with social anxiety. Specifically, the current study investigates whether deficits in emotional awareness (alexithymia) are associated with lower self-concept clarity, a characteristic commonly observed among socially anxious individuals. This thesis also examines whether experiential avoidance—an established maladaptive coping strategy— moderates or predicts the relationships between alexithymia, self-concept clarity, and social anxiety. Findings confirm that experiential avoidance is a …

It's Not The Fault Of The Parrot, But Of The One Who Teaches Him To Talk: Understanding Identities And Relationships Of An Educational Ngo In Guatemala, Brittany Rebecca Blomquist Jan 2025

It's Not The Fault Of The Parrot, But Of The One Who Teaches Him To Talk: Understanding Identities And Relationships Of An Educational Ngo In Guatemala, Brittany Rebecca Blomquist

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Guatemala is an economically poor country, with a rich culture that makes it a destination for foreign assistance through non-governmental agencies (NGOs) and tourism. The history of conflict and foreign economic development within the country has created a dichotomy of identities, divided across economic wealth, ethnicity, and urban/rural landscapes. NGOs, their presence as transnational actors, and their organizational identities augment the identities present within the spaces in which NGOs work. Additionally, these identities are fluid and relational. I argue that the identities and relationships that form within the NGO space are reflective of NGO work and development structures. The identities …

Investigating The Social Effects Of Doomscrolling, Sean Daniel Hronek Jan 2025

Investigating The Social Effects Of Doomscrolling, Sean Daniel Hronek

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

This study investigates the social effects of doomscrolling, a behavior characterized by the compulsive consumption of negative content on social media, which has become increasingly prevalent. The research explores how doomscrolling may contribute to adverse social outcomes. Three hypotheses are proposed: (H1) doomscrolling correlates with increased acceptance of authoritarian behaviors, (H2) doomscrolling correlates with decreased trust in news media, and (H3) doomscrolling correlates with reduced interpersonal trust. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews with 108 (n=108) participants. Results indicate modest correlations between doomscrolling and the hypothesized social effects. Qualitative interviews further revealed that users often …

Gustatory Behaviors Of House Flies: Body Parts Used And Response To Bitter, R M Panchalie Bhagya Gunathunga Jan 2025

Gustatory Behaviors Of House Flies: Body Parts Used And Response To Bitter, R M Panchalie Bhagya Gunathunga

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Insects use multiple body parts, not just their mouth, to taste. Whether a particular body part has a taste function can be determined indirectly by examining the morphology or electrophysiological response of its sensilla (sense organs) or directly by the insects’ behavioral response. Understanding the taste system of insects allows development of better management strategies against pest insects and strategies to protect beneficial insects.House flies, Musca domestica L., are pests at livestock facilities. House fly numbers are controlled mainly by manure management and chemical controls. Toxic granular fly baits remain one of the most popular and effective forms of chemical …

The study further explores the potential of antiracist pedagogy in fostering a more inclusive, …

The Roots Of Empire And Industry: The Transnational History Of The Soviet Rubber Industry, Alexander Hinnov Craver Jan 2025

The Roots Of Empire And Industry: The Transnational History Of The Soviet Rubber Industry, Alexander Hinnov Craver

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Global rubber shortages and market instability in the early 20th century drove the United States, Soviet Union, and Nazi Germany to collaborate in an overwhelming drive to secure domestically producible sources of rubber, either from plants that could grow outside the tropics, or from synthetic rubber processes. The Soviet Union was an indispensable part of this converging, transnational “quest for rubber.” Russian scientists created the first factories to produce synthetic rubber, and Russian agronomists had discovered a dandelion in Central Asia that yielded latex suitable for manufacture. Consequently, both discoveries were disseminated across the world. Sometimes they were shared: the …

Path Analysis Of Person, Socio-Cognitive, Environmental Factors On International Counseling Students’ Researcher Development, Priyanka Jha Jan 2025

Path Analysis Of Person, Socio-Cognitive, Environmental Factors On International Counseling Students’ Researcher Development, Priyanka Jha

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Counseling and counselor education programs consider researcher development as a core component of professional development, preparing students and scholars to contribute to knowledge and evidence-based practices in the field. Despite this importance, researcher development remains understudied, especially for international graduate students in counseling and counselor education programs. Guided by the Social Cognitive Career Theory framework, this dissertation quantitively examined the impact of person, socio-cognitive, and environmental factors on researcher development for international graduate students. This study was correlational in nature and adopted a cross-sectional survey design. The sample for the current study was 85 international graduate students or recent graduate …

The Role Of Metaperceptions In Mindset Formation From Performance Feedback, Audra Paige Jensen Jan 2025

The Role Of Metaperceptions In Mindset Formation From Performance Feedback, Audra Paige Jensen

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation investigated the cognitions that recipients of feedback had about their evaluators, and how that impacted achievement choices. Specifically, it aimed to analyze the role that metaperceptions of developability played in the mindset formation process following feedback. Although mindsets form based on different ways feedback is framed, the exact method that leads from feedback to mindset formation is not clear. Prior research has pointed to a meta-lay theory as the mediating component that leads from feedback framing to mindset. However, how the perception of an evaluator’s mindset would lead to changes in a recipient’s own beliefs was still unclear. …

A Daily Study Of Emotion Regulation Strategies And Stress Response, Maxwell J. Katsikas Jan 2025

A Daily Study Of Emotion Regulation Strategies And Stress Response, Maxwell J. Katsikas

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Emotion regulation is a critical mechanism in the study of many forms of psychopathology. It is widely believed that maladaptive emotion regulation strategies (e.g., emotional suppression) may contribute to the development and maintenance of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Conversely, engaging in adaptive emotion regulation strategies (e.g., cognitive reappraisal) is suggested to be a crucial mechanism of change in some forms of treatment for PTSD. Therefore, understanding how emotion regulation strategies modulate stress response is critical. Much of the prior literature on emotion regulation in PTSD is cross-sectional and, therefore, cannot examine momentary emotion regulation and its immediate sequelae. Hence, the …

Moral Bonds, Modern Subjects: Pecúlio, Property Rights, And The Abolition Of Slavery In Rio De Janeiro, 1822-1888, Alexander Joseph Lundberg Jan 2025

Moral Bonds, Modern Subjects: Pecúlio, Property Rights, And The Abolition Of Slavery In Rio De Janeiro, 1822-1888, Alexander Joseph Lundberg

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation examines the role of enslaved persons’ savings for self-purchase manumission (pecúlio) within the process of gradual abolition in the province of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Article IV of the 1871 Rio Branco Law granted enslaved persons in Brazil the legal ownership of their savings and, with those savings, the right to purchase freedom. Article IV supplemented the “free womb” provision of the Rio Branco Law, which declared that all children henceforth born to enslaved mothers were free. In the Brazilian Parliament, the law’s proponents argued that the savings provision would help reduce the enslaved population by codifying long-standing …

Maternal And Child Anxiety Symptoms: A Longitudinal Examination Of Parent-Related Indirect Pathways During Covid-19, Karamveer Kaur Jan 2025

Maternal And Child Anxiety Symptoms: A Longitudinal Examination Of Parent-Related Indirect Pathways During Covid-19, Karamveer Kaur

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

The present study contributes to the current literature by examining specific parenting pathways (i.e., maternal hostility, overreactivity, laxness, warmth) that may be contributing to the transmission risk of anxiety symptoms from parent to child. Additionally, understanding these pathways during a context of high stress created by the COVID-19 pandemic may be particularly informative. Further, additional analysis explored the reverse direction, examining how child anxiety symptoms might influence parenting behaviors, providing a view of the bidirectional relationship between parent and child anxiety within the context of high stress. The survey data for this study were collected from a longitudinal study titled …

Testing The Dimensional Model Of Adversity And Psychopathology: Expanded Aces And The Mechanisms Of Executive Functioning, Emotion Regulation, And Bmi In The Context Of Psychopathology, Kaitlyn Larkin Jan 2025

Testing The Dimensional Model Of Adversity And Psychopathology: Expanded Aces And The Mechanisms Of Executive Functioning, Emotion Regulation, And Bmi In The Context Of Psychopathology, Kaitlyn Larkin

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are associated with increased risk of negative psychological and physical health outcomes across the lifespan. Informed by the dimensional model of adversity and psychopathology, the present study used longitudinal data from the Future of Families and Child Wellbeing Study (FFCWS, N = 4,898) to examine associations between ACEs categorized into threat and deprivation dimensions, emotion regulation, executive functioning, body mass index (BMI), and internalizing and externalizing symptomology in adolescence. Structural equation modeling was used to assess direct, mediation, and sequential pathways among variables, while controlling for sociodemographic variables and stability of outcomes over time. Findings indicated …

A Comparison Of Two Motivational Tasks In Male And Female Rats Under Acute Stress, Stephanie M. Muscott Jan 2025

A Comparison Of Two Motivational Tasks In Male And Female Rats Under Acute Stress, Stephanie M. Muscott

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Motivation is a complex concept that contributes to or is embedded within many different behaviors. As such, it can be difficult to assess motivation directly, but many researchers have attempted to measure motivation to understand its role in behavior and in diseases associated with a dysregulation of motivation, such as drug addiction or depression. To better understand motivation, behavioral tests frequently use palatable foods to measure motivation as defined by the amount of effort a rat will demonstrate to achieve the reward. Much of research has focused on highly controlled experimental settings, such as lever pressing in an operant box …

Norm Conflicts In International Criminal Tribunals, Megan Schaefer Jan 2025

Norm Conflicts In International Criminal Tribunals, Megan Schaefer

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

What explains an increase in sexual violence prosecutions brought before international criminal tribunals? I investigate this question by examining three cases: The International Military Tribunal of Nuremberg, the International Criminal Tribunal of the Former Yugoslavia, and the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia. There are international norms present within these cases. One of these norms treats sexual violence as a natural consequence of war, while the other norm acknowledges that this violent behavior is wrong and demands accountability. I identify a prioritization of the second of these norms and argue this has impacted the global response to wartime sexual …

Hidden Wounds And Secret Scars: The Post-World War Ii Western As A Cinema Of Trauma, Maggie Sue Scanlan Jan 2025

Hidden Wounds And Secret Scars: The Post-World War Ii Western As A Cinema Of Trauma, Maggie Sue Scanlan

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

In this project, I consider the post-WWII Western film as a site that represents and navigates war traumatized American masculinity. Through a discussion of the significance of the Western as a national myth that speaks directly to American masculinity and nation-building through individual violence, I situate the genre as an ideal vehicle to reframe war traumatized masculinity and analyze seven Westerns through a threefold analysis: metaphoric (a cinema of trauma), psychoanalytic (the traumatic gaze), and therapeutic (recovery and reintegration). In Chapter One, I track anxieties and preoccupations signaling the cultural concern with war trauma in genres more routinely associated with …

The Impact Of Culturally Responsive Classroom Management Self Efficacy And Implicit Biases On Teachers’ Perceptions Of Student And Their Behaviors, Andrew Edward William Slany Jan 2025

The Impact Of Culturally Responsive Classroom Management Self Efficacy And Implicit Biases On Teachers’ Perceptions Of Student And Their Behaviors, Andrew Edward William Slany

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Teachers’ perceptions of student behaviors influences the daily decisions that are made within the classroom setting. Specifically, teachers’ perceptions influence the decision-making process related to how teachers manage student problem behaviors and teachers’ responses to these behaviors. Research has found that teachers’ classroom management self-efficacy and student infraction history can impact teachers’ perceptions of student behaviors. Additionally, teachers’ perceptions of students and their behaviors can be influenced by implicit biases. However, there still exists a gap within the literature that does not fully explain why these teacher judgements occur. The current study examines whether teachers’ culturally responsive classroom management self-efficacy …

The Role Of Disgust In Contamination-Related Obsessive-Compulsive Symptoms, Jonathan A. Teller Jan 2025

The Role Of Disgust In Contamination-Related Obsessive-Compulsive Symptoms, Jonathan A. Teller

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Disgust has been identified as a primary emotion potentially involved in the development and maintenance of contamination-related obsessive-compulsive (OC) symptoms. Research suggests that disgust comprises two distinct components: disgust propensity (DP; tendency or predisposition to experience disgust across situations) and disgust sensitivity (DS; the intensity of disgust experiences and their negative evaluation). Although both DP and DS have been linked to contamination-related OC symptoms, most studies have examined them separately or relied solely on self-report measures. The present study examined whether DP and DS uniquely predict both in-vivo disgust experiences and behavioral approach during a behavioral approach task (BAT). Undergraduate …

Moral Injury In First Responders: The Potential Ameliorative Role Of Self-Disclosure, Peter Tappenden Jan 2025

Moral Injury In First Responders: The Potential Ameliorative Role Of Self-Disclosure, Peter Tappenden

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Perceived social support is a well-established buffer between trauma exposure and adverse outcomes like PTSD. One important aspect of this relationship may be that individuals with strong support networks may be more likely to discuss (“self-disclose”) the traumatic event to members of their support network. Two important aspects of self-disclosure that impact its potential for symptom alleviation following trauma exposure may be: 1) the discloser’s perceived response of the disclosure recipient and 2) whether the trauma-exposed individual repeatedly dwells (co-ruminates) on the traumatic event with the recipient in an unproductive manner. In recent years, a different type of traumatic event …

The Impacts Of Trust In The Time Of Covid-19, Hannah Temes Jan 2025

The Impacts Of Trust In The Time Of Covid-19, Hannah Temes

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Over 350,000 Americans died from COVID-19 in 2020, the first year of the pandemic. Federal health institutions such as the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Department of Human Health Services (DHHS) established guidelines for the public to follow during the pandemic. However, trust in these institutions varied resulting in differing public response —some followed the COVID protocols while others did not. It has been argued that when someone’s self-interest is at risk, they need to trust the government to take care of them. During the COVID-19 pandemic, a time when public health and self-interest were intertwined, …

"I Know You're Just Teasing Me!": Investigating 5th Grade Students' And Teachers' Understanding Of Prosocial Teasing, Ourja . Jan 2025

"I Know You're Just Teasing Me!": Investigating 5th Grade Students' And Teachers' Understanding Of Prosocial Teasing, Ourja .

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Children engage in prosocial teasing which is an ambiguous, positive, and humorous social interaction involving the use of intentional provocation and off-record markers to form meaningful relationships and resolve conflicts (Keltner et al., 2001). While research has indicated a significant prevalence of prosocial teasing use among children, limited studies have explored the levels of prosocial teasing use among elementary school students and teachers' ratings of that use (Barnett et al., 2004; Smith et al., 2009). This study aimed at refining an existing child behavior scale to develop a subscale that accurately measured and represented prosocial teasing in elementary school children. …

Romantic Relationship Quality, Coparenting, And Parenting: An Actor Partner Interdependence Mediation Model, Jill Caradec Jan 2025

Romantic Relationship Quality, Coparenting, And Parenting: An Actor Partner Interdependence Mediation Model, Jill Caradec

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Family systems theory indicates there is interdependence between family subsystems. Indeed, previous research has found associations between romantic relationship quality, coparenting, and parenting. However, few have actually accounted for the interdependence of mothers and fathers and these constructs. Even fewer have considered how coparenting may serve as an indirect pathway between romantic relationship quality and parenting behaviors. The aim of the current study was to fill these gaps in the literature by utilizing an actor-partner interdependence mediation model. Specifically, mothers’ and fathers’ perception of the coparenting relationship was tested within one model as indirect paths for the actor and partner …

Natural Resources And The Role Of Political Parties In Perpetuating Authoritarian Regimes In Indonesia And Cambodia, Azriansyah A. Agoes Jan 2025

Natural Resources And The Role Of Political Parties In Perpetuating Authoritarian Regimes In Indonesia And Cambodia, Azriansyah A. Agoes

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation explains the puzzle of the survival of authoritarian regimes through a comparative study of Indonesia and Cambodia. Despite the two countries being blessed with rich natural resources and ruled by dictators for more than thirty years, Suharto in Indonesia and Hun Sen in Cambodia experienced different political fates. After ruling Indonesia for 32 years, mass protests and elite betrayals forced Suharto to step down in May 1998. He left Indonesia in a chaotic situation as riots and violence erupted in every corner of the country, and his successor had to face repeated coup attempts due to a lack …

Exploring School Psychologists’ Sld Decisions For Emergent Bilingual Students, Brooke Ann Butcher Jan 2025

Exploring School Psychologists’ Sld Decisions For Emergent Bilingual Students, Brooke Ann Butcher

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Emergent bilinguals (EBs) are one of the fastest-growing student populations in K-12 schools, yet research on their evaluation for special education, particularly for specific learning disabilities (SLD), remains limited. School psychologists play a critical role in these evaluations, yet prior studies indicate they often struggle to differentiate between language-based learning difficulties and true learning disabilities. This study examined how school psychologists weigh different evaluation components—background information, progress monitoring data, and standardized test data—when making SLD eligibility determinations for EBs compared to native English speakers. Using an experimental vignette design, 109 practicing school psychologists were randomly assigned to review a student …

Investigating The Impact Of A Brief Self-Compassion Intervention On Shame And Psychopathology For Women With Histories Of Childhood Emotional Abuse, Sarah Hill Jan 2025

Investigating The Impact Of A Brief Self-Compassion Intervention On Shame And Psychopathology For Women With Histories Of Childhood Emotional Abuse, Sarah Hill

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Background: Childhood emotional abuse, while frequently co-occurring with other types of abuse, is often neglected within the trauma literature, but has been found to be an important independent predictor of adult psychopathology. Shame represents a potentially important and malleable factor that may contribute to the development and maintenance of poor psychological outcomes. As such, interventions focused on increasing self-compassion have been identified as promising methods to decrease experiences of shame, and ultimately symptoms of psychopathology. While literature on brief self-compassion interventions has rapidly increased in recent years, notable gaps remain. Specifically, there is limited research exploring the impact of brief …

Statelessness And The Social Construction Of Rohingya’S Citizenship Rights In Myanmar, Md Imamul Hossain Jan 2025

Statelessness And The Social Construction Of Rohingya’S Citizenship Rights In Myanmar, Md Imamul Hossain

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

The Rohingya’s statelessness is a result of their systematic exclusion from protection mechanisms and citizenship rights. The Burmese government and the majority Buddhist population have marginalized and discriminated against the Rohingya, deeply impacting identity politics among the Rohingya. Due to their lack of a national identity document in Myanmar, the Rohingya are easy targets for discrimination and violence. The fact that they are not considered full citizens has also made it hard for them to receive essential support. My thesis carefully analyzes how dominant narratives, legal instruments, and bureaucratic mechanisms systematically excluded Rohingya from citizenship rights in Myanmar as well …

Beyond Borders: Exploring Counselors’ Perceptions Of Multicultural Counseling Competencies Following Cultural Immersion, Kassandra M. Kavanaugh Jan 2025

Beyond Borders: Exploring Counselors’ Perceptions Of Multicultural Counseling Competencies Following Cultural Immersion, Kassandra M. Kavanaugh

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Research has revealed that cultural immersion can increase multicultural counseling competencies in counselors-in-training (Barden & Cashwell, 2014; Barden et al., 2015; Choi & Protivnak, 2016; Dietz & Baker, 2019; Gaia, 2015; Wathen & Kleist, 2015). In light of the increasing diversity within the counseling profession and cultural competency continuing education requirements, the examination of cultural immersion as a means of shaping counselors' cultural competence is both justified and imperative. By utilizing interpretive phenomenological analysis, five participants were interviewed to better understand professional counselors’ perceptions of their multicultural counseling competencies following cultural immersion. The results from this study identified five themes, …

Ai Fetishism And Perverse Climate Disavowal: Why Denying Destructiveness Facilitates Our Ecological Collapse, Alexander M. Stoner, Alexander M. Stoner, Anthony J. Knowles Jan 2025

Ai Fetishism And Perverse Climate Disavowal: Why Denying Destructiveness Facilitates Our Ecological Collapse, Alexander M. Stoner, Alexander M. Stoner, Anthony J. Knowles

Journal Articles

As ecological crises intensify, scholars and activists increasingly question the sustainability of economic growth. Yet, the dominant growth-oriented paradigm remains foundational to advanced capitalist societies and cannot be altered without significant social disruption. The resulting tension between ecological limits and the imperative for continuous growth generates “climate anxiety.” This article advances the concept of perverse climate disavowal: a mode of climate denial that acknowledges climate threats while maintaining faith in the illusion of infinite economic expansion. This disavowal functions as a psychological defense mechanism, enabling individuals and institutions to avoid confronting structural contradictions. The article examines the increasing use of …
