Mental And Physical Health, Impulse Control, And Intimate Partner Violence Within A Veteran Sample, Hannah L. Grigorian, Helen P. Hailes, Kathleen Palm Reed, Erin D. Reilly
Psychology
Introduction: Psychiatric (e.g., PTSD, alcohol use disorder) and physical issues (e.g., chronic pain, sleep problems) are robustly associated with the use of intimate partner violence (IPV). These chronic conditions can amplify the likelihood of IPV use by increasing perceived threat, poor relationship quality, and negative affect while simultaneously decreasing the ability to inhibit violent behavior. However, the research in this area has largely been examined in limited samples or by examining a single chronic condition above diagnostic cut-offs or specific dual diagnosis (e.g., PTSD and alcohol use disorder). Further, potential mechanisms of action such as impulse control difficulties are rarely …
An Exploratory Analysis Of How Perceived Financial Scarcity Impacts Learning And Cognition, Jayantika Chakraborty, Yuanhao Zhang, Alena G. Esposito
An Exploratory Analysis Of How Perceived Financial Scarcity Impacts Learning And Cognition, Jayantika Chakraborty, Yuanhao Zhang, Alena G. Esposito
Psychology
Perceived financial scarcity, marked by feelings of “not having enough money,” redirects attentional resources toward urgent financial concerns. Since attention is a fundamental component of learning, this redirection may adversely affect educational outcomes. While previous research has examined the relationship between financial stress and academic achievement, as well as its impact on motivation, there has been limited direct investigation into how perceived financial scarcity influences actual learning performance. To address this gap, we assessed whether perceived financial scarcity might influence learning outcomes in college students. Specifically, we examined perceived financial scarcity’s impact on recall of directly provided facts and inferential …

Psychology
Black youth in New Orleans experience some of the highest rates of violence in the US. Although Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR) is recognized as an effective tool for empowering young people and fostering social change, its application in violence prevention remains an area worthy of further application. This case study presents a YPAR-based program designed to address structural issues, including racism, discrimination, and economic disinvestment, that contribute to youth violence. The Enrichment to Empowerment (E2E) program provides a platform for youth to advocate for systemic change in their communities. This paper offers actionable insights into equity-centered approaches for violence …

“I Didn’T Think Many Teachers Cared:” Using Youth Participatory Action Research With Middle Schoolers To Advance Trauma-Informed Practice In Schools, Jesse Chanin, Stacy Overstreet, Allisyn Swift, Samantha Francois
Psychology
Student voice has been largely absent in the trauma-informed schools movement. Student perspectives on trauma-informed approaches are particularly critical for students who identify as Black and Hispanic. Black and Hispanic students consistently report more negative school experiences than their white peers, including negative school climate and lower levels of school equity and personal belonging. This article describes a youth participatory action research (YPAR) program with 18 Black and Hispanic middle school students. We describe how YPAR was integrated with trauma-informed principles to engage student voice. We outline student-led research projects and results related to core features of trauma-informed schools. Finally, …

While quantitative research on trust in HATs is well-established, there is a significant gap in understanding individuals’ subjective experiences during trust violations and repair. This study explores how people perceive and respond to these events, guided by three key questions: (1) How do participants describe emotional and behavioral responses to trust violations and repair? (2) How do personality traits influence reactions? (3) What qualitative themes emerge in the dissolution of trust? Using a mixed-methods approach, participants engaged in a 1-hour simulated search-and-rescue mission with four autonomous agents. During the task, one agent committed two trust violations, followed by repair attempts …
Sexual And Reproductive Health Access Among Racial/Ethnic Minority College Students, Srithanvi Pasunuri
Sexual And Reproductive Health Access Among Racial/Ethnic Minority College Students, Srithanvi Pasunuri
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Sexual and reproductive health (SRH) is critical for individual well-being, yet significant disparities in access persist among racial and ethnic minority college students in the United States. These inequities, driven by systemic barriers such as financial constraints, cultural stigmas, and inadequate campus resources, contribute to higher rates of unintended pregnancies, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and poor health outcomes within these populations. This systematic review aims to identify and synthesize existing literature on the barriers to SRH access for racial and ethnic minority college students, explore how cultural, social, and institutional factors influence service utilization, and assess interventions proven effective in …

Examining The Impact Of Resilience And Sense Of Community On Mental Health And Academic Performance, Samara B. Coleman
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Within the United States, a third of college-aged young adults are diagnosed with at least one psychological disorder. Resilience, the ability to bounce back from adversity, has been shown to help mitigate the adverse effects of burnout and stress, and support academic performance in some cases. Additionally, a sense of community has also been shown to be crucial in buffering the negative consequences of adversity. The following research questions guide this study: 1) How significant a role does the community play in resilience and mental health? 2) How does resiliency relate to the academic performance of students experiencing varying levels …

Pharmacy Benefit Managers And The Fight For Affordable Prescription Drugs: A Case For Accountability Through Regulation, Cayden Webster
Pharmacy Benefit Managers And The Fight For Affordable Prescription Drugs: A Case For Accountability Through Regulation, Cayden Webster
Res Publica - Journal of Undergraduate Research
As prescription drug prices in the United States continue to climb, the debate surrounding cost control methods has taken center stage among politicians, providers, insurance companies, and consumers alike. At the heart of this issue lies the Pharmacy Benefit Manager (PBM). These third party companies were initially intended to drive drug prices down by negotiating for benefits on behalf of clients; but their hidden business strategies and oligopolistic market share has resulted in many Americans today struggling with unfair drug costs and fewer choices of treatment. In this paper, I seek to demonstrate that by expanding PBM market competition and …
Juvenile Record Expungement Policy In Illinois, Emma Kudelka
Juvenile Record Expungement Policy In Illinois, Emma Kudelka
Res Publica - Journal of Undergraduate Research
This policy paper explores juvenile expungement policies and their broader social impact. Research suggests that lenient expungement laws help prevent discrimination in education, housing, and military service, aiding rehabilitation youth offenders' reintegration. The paper begins with a historical overview of Illinois juvenile law, highlighting its shift from punitive to rehabilitative approaches. It then examines key legislation, including the Juvenile Court Act, Juvenile Justice, and Delinquency Prevention Act, and Youth Opportunity and Fairness Act. Illinois's juvenile expungement laws are analyzed, covering eligibility, process, and timeline. A comparative analysis follows, contrasting Illinois' policies with those of California and Florida to emphasize differences …
Why Are Children's Health Outcomes Different In Counties Across The United States?, Caylen Pavlicek
Why Are Children's Health Outcomes Different In Counties Across The United States?, Caylen Pavlicek
Res Publica - Journal of Undergraduate Research
This paper explores the relationship between family income and health outcomes for children across counties in the United States, focusing on low birth weight as a key indicator. Income disparities among counties often correlate with varying health outcomes for children, particularly those born into lower-income families who lack the resources for adequate healthcare. Utilizing data from 3,113 counties, I examine the impact of income, education, rural versus urban location, healthcare access, and other social determinants on children's health, with a specific focus on birth weight. The findings reveal a strong negative correlation between median household income and low birth weight, …
Palm Oil Expansion: Carrying On The Legacy Of Colonial Exploitation In Indonesia, Melinda Burgin
Palm Oil Expansion: Carrying On The Legacy Of Colonial Exploitation In Indonesia, Melinda Burgin
Res Publica - Journal of Undergraduate Research
Today, plantation agriculture in Indonesia is dominated by palm oil expansion. While the palm oil industry has frequently been touted as an economic boon for Indonesia, the environmental and social consequences have been dire, particularly for Indigenous peoples. Oil palm cultivation has been a part of Indonesian agriculture since its introduction by Dutch traders in the mid 19th century, but palm oil production in Indonesia really exploded in the 1990s, as seen in Figure 1. Since then, palm oil production has been a leading cause of deforestation (Austin, 2019) and caused devastation to indigenous communities as they lose swathes of …
How Much Does America Hate Black Women?, Franchesca Smith
How Much Does America Hate Black Women?, Franchesca Smith
Res Publica - Journal of Undergraduate Research
This paper explores the relationship between sociocultural factors and intersectionality by way of economic inequalities. Intersectionality is a phenomenon that receives little to no examination especially in regards to Black women. The following research uses the theories of intersectionality, human capital, and institutional to examine which has the most significant effect on the wages of Black women compared to other demographics. Findings suggest that the intersectionality of Black women does have a substantial wage gap, but the correlation is positive, which is not true for the variables Black and women when separated. Additionally, the research suggests that the human capital …
The American Party Polarization Dilemma: Why Political Attitudes Matter, Chase Beitz
The American Party Polarization Dilemma: Why Political Attitudes Matter, Chase Beitz
Res Publica - Journal of Undergraduate Research
The question pursued in my research paper is this: Does the proliferation of extreme political attitudes fuel party polarization along party lines in the United States? I hypothesize that the greater the number and extreme tone of political statements made by powerful figures within a party, the greater the level of polarization between and within the parties. A thorough analysis was completed on 4 different eras of Republican control in Congress: the John Boehner era (2011-2015), the Paul Ryan era (2015-2019), the Kevin McCarthy era (2023), and the Mike Johnson era (2023-Present). By examining the influence exerted by the Republican …

Navigating The Intersections: Immigration, Diversity Of The Workforce, Precarious Work, And Vulnerabilities In Occupational Safety And Health, Daniel Côté, Jessica Dubé

How To Catch A Con: The Rhetorical Strategies Of Fraudulent Political Leaders, Lukas Huntington
How To Catch A Con: The Rhetorical Strategies Of Fraudulent Political Leaders, Lukas Huntington
CMC Senior Theses
The United States faces persistent challenges in controlling political fraud. Government agencies exhibit the second-highest fraud rate of any industry, and corruption levels have only worsened over the last decade, contributing to declining public trust in national leadership. Current fraud detection efforts generally catch late-stage, large-scale fraud, highlighting the need for earlier-detection mechanisms. One way this could be accomplished involves identifying rhetorical patterns that are commonly used by political frauds in order to flag high-risk individuals. Leaning on the Theory of Planned Behavior, it was hypothesized that political frauds would exhibit more rhetorical appeals to fear, blame, pathos, and self-promotion …

Nuclear Deterrence Strategies And The Balance Of Power In Europe, Chick Edmond
Political Science & Geography Faculty Publications
The beginning of the Cold War era indubitably defines nuclear deterrence strategies in Europe by reinforcing and re-strategizing security dynamics amongst European States. The balance of power in Europe has been geopolitically influenced by NATO and Russia in a quest to avoid any kind of security dilemmas from either side. In order to maintain a strategic deterrence balance posture, this complex security navigation scenario therefore act as stabilizing factor in the region as well as preventing any future conflict on the Europe continent resulting from security imbalances. NATO eastward enlargement has maintained a significant strategic balance of power in the …
“Remember, You Are Not A Superhuman”: The Lived Experience Of Rest, Unrest, And Leadership In Special Operations, Trey Zoda
Dissertations
U.S. special operations forces (SOF) operate in volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) environments that demand cognitive clarity, emotional regulation, and relational presence. While previous research on SOF readiness has addressed physical fitness, resilience, and sleep, little attention has been given to the psychological dimensions of rest and their implications for leadership. The purpose of this qualitative, transcendental phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of psychological rest and unrest in U.S. government SOF and the perceived influence of these states on their leadership. Guided by Moustakas’s transcendental method, in-depth, semi-structured interviews were conducted with SOF personnel. They were …

Donald Griffin, Cognitive Ethology, And Animal Life Histories, Walter Veit
Animal Sentience
Carolyn Ristau offers a stellar investigative biography of Donald Redfield Griffin and his influence on the science and philosophy of animal minds. This commentary focuses on his aim to study animal minds through an ethological lens—that is, by examining the evolved, adaptive functions of mental capacities and consciousness in natural environments, rather than confining research to controlled laboratory settings. I argue that, far from being romantic, this approach can be firmly grounded in modern life history theory.
