International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2025

Air Traffic Control (ATC) trainees at the FAA Academy and developmentalcontrollers in the field often face dynamic and unexpected events in training, which may impact safe and effective human performance if certain vulnerabilitiesare not properly managed or mitigated. We integrate theory on self-regulatedworkplace training with a cognitive neuroscience perspective on attention touniquely examine the effects of surprise and stress on performance. Our near-termgoal is to demonstrate the viability of using physiological measures to predictperformance changes in a laboratory study of young adults learning a complexvideogame. We use a novel, event-marked and person-centric longitudinalapproach to the analysis of physiological variables to distinguish …

Review Of Fatigue Micro-Mitigations For Application In Air Traffic Control: Benefits, Challenges, And Feasibility, John Kang, Ruth E. Propper, Michael Sawyer

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2025

Air traffic controllers (ATCs) are one of the primary drivers of safe and resilient operations in the National Airspace System. The FAA has implemented manylarge-scale fatigue mitigation strategies (e.g., scheduling policies, break time requirements, and time-on-position limits) to combat fatigue. Given the performance benefits related to managing fatigue, ATCs may also benefit from simple, practical fatigue interventions and that could improve job performance. This review targets ‘micro-mitigations,’ which we define as mitigations that maybe unobtrusive, can be quickly implemented, have a rapid impact, and are easy to engage. We explore the possible utility of five micro-mitigations to help minimize fatigue/improve alertness: …

Gig Economy And Income Inequality, Utsah Thakur Jan 2025

Gig Economy And Income Inequality, Utsah Thakur

Student Research

The dramatic expansion of the gig economy in the United States has led to a transition from traditional labor markets to a more flexible structure creating opportunities for alternate income sources. While the gig economy provides more work opportunities for low-skilled workers, there are also concerns about the role that it may play in contributing to income inequality. This research explores the spatio-temporal relationship between the participation of workers in the gig economy and income inequality. The study extracts individual-level data from the IPUMS dataset to compute consistent state-specific measures of participation in the gig economy and income inequality over …

How Much Does America Hate Black Women?, Franchesca Smith Jan 2025

How Much Does America Hate Black Women?, Franchesca Smith

Research Honors

This paper explores the relationship between sociocultural factors and intersectionality by way of economic inequalities. Intersectionality is a phenomenon that receives little to no examination, especially in regards to Black women. The following research uses the theories of intersectionality, human capital, and institutional factors to examine which has the most significant effect on the wages of Black women compared to other demographics. Findings suggest that the intersectionality of Black women does have a substantial wage gap, but the correlation is positive, which is not true for the variables Black and women when separated. Through multiple regression analysis, it is noticed …

Shadows Of Discrimination: Impacts Of Ambient Discrimination On Queer People In The United States, Kayla A. Dufour Jan 2025

Shadows Of Discrimination: Impacts Of Ambient Discrimination On Queer People In The United States, Kayla A. Dufour

Psychology | Senior Theses

People identifying as LGBTQIA2S+ in the United States experience victimization, direct discrimination, and violence at a rate of 2 to 4 times higher than their heterosexual counterparts (Bender & Lauritsen, 2021), leading to higher levels of psychological pain and suicidal ideation, with up to 50% of LGBTQIA2S+ people having suicidal thoughts in their lifetimes. Those who experience ambient discrimination, such as witnessing or being made aware of discriminatory behavior of someone other than oneself in your group, have higher levels of psychological pain, PTSD, and substance use (Peterson et al., 2019). The goal of the present study is to gain …

Exploring Gender Disappointment: Social Stigma, Underlying Shame, And Grieving An Idealized Family… “Oh Well, As Long As It’S A Healthy Baby!”, Melanie Scaccio

Selected Full Text Dissertations, 2011-

Gender disappointment (GD) refers to the sadness parents feel when the sex of their child differs from their preference (Groenewald, 2016). While GD is a globally recognized phenomenon, research in the United States remains limited despite anecdotal evidence on social media and restrictive gender norms (Heise et al., 2019). This qualitative study explored the subjective experiences of GD in American mothers. Twelve biologically female participants, aged 18 and older, who experienced GD were recruited through convenience and snowball sampling. Semi-structured interviews conducted via video conferencing, averaging 40 minutes, were analyzed using grounded theory methodology (Auerbach & Silverstein, 2003). A member …

Sci-Fi: An Anthropology Anthology Of Other Worlds, Kailey Rocker, Genevieve Frank, Miranda Lile, Meridian Ondrejka, Nyhan O'Sullivan, Leo Plunkett, Lukas Schmerse, Percy Schneider, Iris Roxanne Shykula, Sophia Weiss-Priebe

Sci-Fi: An Anthropology Anthology of Other Worlds

In this magazine, student authors at Lawrence University explore the relationship between science fiction and ethnography. While different in terms of content, writing style, audience, and author, the two genres share an important objective: to make the strange familiar and the familiar strange. In exploring human variation and the diversity of cultural knowledge, anthropological accounts (ethnography) challenge the anthropologist and the reader to understand that their perspective of the world around them is one among many. Likewise, science fiction presents a world with its own logics that simultaneously comfort and estrange the reader. While science fiction and ethnography offer an …

The Effect Of School Shootings On Academic Outcomes For Students Of Varying Socioeconomic Status, Owen Lindstrom Jan 2025

The Effect Of School Shootings On Academic Outcomes For Students Of Varying Socioeconomic Status, Owen Lindstrom

Economics Honors Projects

Shootings in schools have risen dramatically over the last two decades and are one of the most pressing issues today. Between 2006 and 2016, Texas high schools suffered from 19 shootings and one fatality on school grounds. This study analyzes the impact of school shootings on educational outcomes for students of different socioeconomic status using public education data from Texas at the high school campus level. I first used matched difference in differences and matched triple difference in differences methods, however, these suffer from biases because of heterogeneous timing of treatment. To adjust for this, I include an event study …

The Debate Surrounding Ozempic And Other “Miracle” Weight Loss Drugs Situated In The Scholarly And Public Spheres, Allison Rivard

Honors Senior Capstones and Theses

Over the last few years, there has been a frenzy of media outlets, celebrities, and influencers publicizing the effectiveness of semaglutides, like Ozempic, for an off-label use: weight loss. With the larger presence and availability of these medications for off-label use instead of diabetes management, outsiders believe that obese and overweight people who begin to look different are cheating. The public nature and visibility of weight loss subject the people losing weight to much speculation and scrutiny. In the past, many weight loss “solutions” have been proposed, diets created, and even surgeries performed, but these “solutions” have proven temporary. Most …

Caring For Native American Elders: Developing Cultural Knowledge And Comfort Levels Of Senior Nursing Students In Northern California, Ireland Odonnell Jan 2025

Caring For Native American Elders: Developing Cultural Knowledge And Comfort Levels Of Senior Nursing Students In Northern California, Ireland Odonnell

Nursing | Senior Theses

Providing appropriate care to patients in the healthcare setting includes being aware of their culture. Nurses play an important role in caring for patients and need to know how to be culturally sensitive toward their patients. Various research articles highlight the lack of knowledge and comfort that current nurses and nurse educators have when caring for culturally diverse patients. Research also shows that a lack of overall knowledge about how to be culturally competent, knowing how to care for patients from different backgrounds, and understanding the effect cultural beliefs have on modern-day medicine poses a challenge when trying to provide …

A "Mind"Ful Diet: Analyzing Nursing Education On The Mind Diet For Early-Onset Alzheimer's Disease, Audrey Marie Rafols

Nursing | Senior Theses

Early-Onset Alzheimer’s Disease (EOAD) is a rare form of Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) that makes up around 5% of AD cases. The Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay (MIND) diet, a hybrid diet of the Mediterranean and DASH (dietary approaches to stop hypertension) is an approach that patients with EOAD can adapt to slow down the progression of cognitive decline. Current literature focuses on what the effects of the diet are more for AD and not EOAD specifically, where there is less of an established baseline of nurse knowledge. The lack of research about what nurses understand regarding providing education of the …

Developing A Culturally Sensitive Nursing Framework For Muslim Patients Practicing Ramadan: Focusing On Fasting Benefits And Islamic Dietary Recommendations, Amreen M. Munshi

Nursing | Senior Theses

Background: Muslims practice Ramadan, a month-long period of fasting from dawn to dusk, yet many healthcare providers lack knowledge of its principles and practices. Hospitals lack formal education on caring for fasting Muslim patients, leading to a knowledge deficit in cultural competence and sensitivity of Islamic practices. Purpose: This paper proposes a research design for a nurse education program on Ramadan fasting to promote cultural competence and sensitivity in nursing care. The proposed research aims to educate nurses on Islamic practices, particularly Ramadan, to bridge the cultural competency gap. The literature review also explores the health benefits of …

Emotional Flooding: Examining Associations With Family Of Origin Violence And The Mediating Role Of Attentional Bias To Threat, Rachel Zukerman Jan 2025

Emotional Flooding: Examining Associations With Family Of Origin Violence And The Mediating Role Of Attentional Bias To Threat, Rachel Zukerman

Theses and Dissertations

Emotional flooding, or the experience of partner negative affect as intensely disorganizing and overwhelming, has recently emerged as an important variable in predicting maladaptive relationship behaviors, including intimate partner violence (IPV). However, not much is known about risk factors for flooding beyond qualities of the interpersonal interaction. While flooding depends on the experience of intense partner negative emotion, some individuals may vary regarding their propensities to feel flooded in a relatively stable way, and therefore may be more likely to engage in destructive relationship behaviors. Theory and research suggest that family violence negatively impacts emotional processing by increasing emotional arousal …

Testing Mediation Models Of Antisocial Behavior In The Context Of Parental Criminal Justice System Involvement, David Alfonso Tio Jan 2025

Testing Mediation Models Of Antisocial Behavior In The Context Of Parental Criminal Justice System Involvement, David Alfonso Tio

Theses and Dissertations

Parental criminal justice system involvement (CJSI) affects a significant portion of our children in a multitude of ways, including increasing the child’s risk for developing antisocial behaviors and, in doing so, perpetuating the intergenerational cycle of criminal offending that uniquely and unjustly afflicts marginalized communities of color and leaves behind what many have termed the ‘hidden victims’ of CJSI. This dissertation aimed to answer two research questions: 1. Does the division into two categories, the aggression, and rule breaking dimensions, provide a superior fitting model than the more commonly used unidimensional measure?; 2. Is it more accurate to model the …

How Technology Overuse Is Affecting Youth’S Physical Activity Time, Amiya Prema Sikidar Jan 2025

How Technology Overuse Is Affecting Youth’S Physical Activity Time, Amiya Prema Sikidar

Theses and Dissertations

Prior research demonstrates how time and energy dedicated to screens is negatively correlated with physical activity time (Alotaibi et al., 2020; Scaranni et al., 2023; Barot et al., 2023; Parasuraman et al., 2017). Therefore, in this research study, we aimed to investigate if time dedicated to screens is still replacing participation in physical activities or if technology has become so integrated in our lives over time that it no longer affects our physical activity time. We tested this via an online survey of 62 students (38 females, 24 males) at St. John’s University. Participants completed an internet addiction questionnaire (M=46.66, …

Childhood Trauma And Its Effects On Psychological Well-Being And Physical Health, Mohaned Elgizawy Jan 2025

Childhood Trauma And Its Effects On Psychological Well-Being And Physical Health, Mohaned Elgizawy

Theses and Dissertations

There is consistent evidence concerning the impact of trauma on children and the effects on psychological well-being. This study aims to investigate the impact of childhood trauma on the psychological resilience, mental health, and physical development of culturally diverse individuals. The study also explores the influence of cultural orientation on psychological and physical well-being. Cultural orientation is the degree to which individuals identify with either individualism or collectivism, two core dimensions of cultural frameworks. The self-construal scale was applied to address the cultural orientation, which significantly covers individualistic and collectivistic aspects. The participants were 97 culturally diverse students from St. …

Health Literacy’S Relationship With Hearing Loss And Tinnitus In Marines And Sailors At An Air Base, Caton Harris Jan 2025

Health Literacy’S Relationship With Hearing Loss And Tinnitus In Marines And Sailors At An Air Base, Caton Harris

Theses and Dissertations

Health literacy is listed as an international health issue by the World Health Organization (WHO) and is one of the primary goals of Healthy People 2030 (USDHHR, 2023; WHO, 2023). Health literacy is the minimal amount of information needed to make appropriate health decisions (Nutbeam, 2017). Individuals must have adequate health literacy to sufficiently read and comprehend medical brochures and medical pamphlets and understand verbal instructions from their medical providers (Bo et al., 2014). Poor health literacy can reduce overall quality of life and access to health care. Health literacy is lower in adolescents and lower socioeconomic groups; therefore, the …

An Ethnographic Survey Of Hispanic Parental Experiences With Special Education, Leila Fox Goldsmith Jan 2025

An Ethnographic Survey Of Hispanic Parental Experiences With Special Education, Leila Fox Goldsmith

Theses and Dissertations

This study explored Spanish-speaking parents' involvement, perception, and experience with Committee on Special Education (CSE) meetings. This study also sought to gauge knowledge and understanding of special education law. Special education law explicitly states that parents should be active participants in CSE meetings and have a role in creating their child's Individualized Education Program (IEP). Schools are mandated to abide by special education laws and conduct meetings in which every parent has a fair opportunity to collaborate and discuss the child's educational program. Previous research shows there may be a disconnect between Spanish-speaking parents and their children's educators. This study …

Predicting Dysfunctional Anger Through Irrational Beliefs And Maladaptive Schemas: A Mixed Methods Analysis, Katharine Downing Romero Jan 2025

Predicting Dysfunctional Anger Through Irrational Beliefs And Maladaptive Schemas: A Mixed Methods Analysis, Katharine Downing Romero

Theses and Dissertations

This study explored the complex relationship between irrational beliefs, maladaptive schemas, and anger using validated quantitative methods and a novel Articulated Thoughts in Simulated Situations (ATSS) paradigm. An investigation involving 170 participants from student and general populations used text-based scenarios to induce anger, revealing significant associations between expressed irrational beliefs, early maladaptive schemas, trait anger, and general anger dysfunction. While irrational beliefs were not significantly linked to induced anger levels in this non-clinical population, state anger increased the strength of the relationship between anger outcomes and early maladaptive schemas, suggesting that heightened emotional states may amplify schema impact on anger …

Computing In The Commonwealth: Specialized Education In Computer Science And Information Technology For High School Students In Virginia – An Environmental Scan, Amy Corning, Jonathan D. Becker, Jon Graham, James Carrigan, Keisha Tennessee

ICRE Publications

Over the past two decades, Virginia has invested substantially in STEM education, in part through specialized programs focused on computer science and information technology (CS/IT). This study represents the first effort to identify Virginia’s specialized secondary CS/IT programs and examine them collectively. Findings from the statewide environmental scan indicate that the programs are delivered through a wide variety of institutional structures, including Governor’s STEM Academies, Governor’s Schools, specialty centers, and academies, but most often through Career and Technical Education (CTE) centers. Programs tend to be concentrated in metropolitan areas, and some rural divisions may not be served. The programs provide …

Appraising Records, Maureen Cresci Callahan, David Staniunas Jan 2025

Appraising Records, Maureen Cresci Callahan, David Staniunas

Published Works

This chapter operationalizes archival appraisal as a values-driven, lifecycle activity that begins in pre-custodial conversations and continues through transfer, accessioning, stabilization, description, migration/reformatting, and, when warranted, deaccessioning. It reframes appraisal as both selection and retention, not merely separation, and offers guiding principles: assess long-term research value, preserve context, and acknowledge the rarity of true uniqueness. The authors translate strategy into practice through functional analysis and scaled prioritization (e.g., adaptations of the Minnesota Method), showing how to map organizational or personal functions to record types to widen evidentiary breadth. Practical tools include creator interviews, top-level surveys of born-digital environments, and structured …

Appraisal And Acquisition Strategies In Collecting Repositories, Maureen Cresci Callahan, David Staniunas Jan 2025

Appraisal And Acquisition Strategies In Collecting Repositories, Maureen Cresci Callahan, David Staniunas

Published Works

This chapter explores the principles, values, and practices that shape intentional collecting and acquisitions work in archival repositories. The authors argue that acquisitions are a form of public service, requiring archivists to engage actively and responsibly with communities to diversify the historical record and counteract the biases of passive or unexamined collecting. Drawing on case studies from institutions such as Northeastern University, the Minnesota Historical Society, and the New York State Archives, the chapter outlines models and strategies for building trust with donors, navigating power dynamics, and aligning acquisitions with institutional mission and capacity. Topics include advisory boards, documentation strategy, …

Form-Meaning Mappings Of Cyclic Gestures, Wilho Macneil Jan 2025

Form-Meaning Mappings Of Cyclic Gestures, Wilho Macneil

Linguistics ETDs

Hirrel (2018) examines form-meaning mappings between speech and co-articulated cyclic gestures, identifying meanings associated with such gestures. To test replicability, this thesis analyzes two functional-semantic domains: modification (adverbs, quantifiers) and morphosyntactic constructions (complex sentences, English Progressive) and their relationship to cyclic gestures. About 12 hours of video was coded in ELAN for cyclic gestures (n=586) and analyzed textually for speech instances (n=1919) of target constructions. Contrary to Hirrel’s predictions, cyclic gestures were not more commonly co-articulated with adverbs than quantifiers and were also not more commonly co-articulated with complex sentences than the English Progressive Construction. Neither pattern reached statistical significance …

Genocide Under The Gavel: The International Court Of Justice And The Evolution Of The Genocide Convention, Olivia Johnson Jan 2025

Genocide Under The Gavel: The International Court Of Justice And The Evolution Of The Genocide Convention, Olivia Johnson

Political Science Honors Projects

The Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide is a vital tool for addressing genocide. As mechanisms of global governance fail to stop atrocity, the International Court of Justice has become a legal and political arena for the enforcement of the Genocide Convention. This study asks the question of how the use of the Genocide Convention at the International Court of Justice changed over time? In the four cases that come before the Court, this paper identifies four key developments: a shift toward viewing genocide as a continuum; South Africa v. Israel strengthened the Court’s jurisdiction; …
