Regions Of Risk: A Geographical Introduction To Disasters By Kenneth Hewitt, Taly D. Drezner Jan 2025

Regions Of Risk: A Geographical Introduction To Disasters By Kenneth Hewitt, Taly D. Drezner

The Geographical Bulletin

Regions of Risk is a comprehensive text that painstakingly describes how disasters and the threat of disasters shape and geographically alter communities and regions all over the world. In his introduction, Hewitt writes, "Any given risk or disaster event is distinguished by its geographic location and setting. These are important keys to the origins of danger, the forms of damage and whom they most affect."

Exploring Geographic Information Systems By Nicholas Chrisman, Eric Matranga Jan 2025

Exploring Geographic Information Systems By Nicholas Chrisman, Eric Matranga

The Geographical Bulletin

Rather than attempting to define the bounds and scope of geographic information, Chrisman provides an organizational framework that" . .. challenges the reader to participate in the exploration". Exploring Geographic Information Systems uses a nested set of interrelated issues to emphasize the need for users to think critically about the appropriate use of methods, tools, and data in GIS.

Physical Hydrology By S. Lawrence Ding-Man, Patricia J. Beyer Jan 2025

Physical Hydrology By S. Lawrence Ding-Man, Patricia J. Beyer

The Geographical Bulletin

As the public eye increasingly focuses on issues related to the use and quality of water, the science of hydrology expands from its position as an academic and engineering endeavor to one of prominance in people's everyday lives. With this expansion comes the need for education, not only for hydrologists and geomorphologists, but for biologists, botanists, earth scientists, climatologists, land managers, developers and policy makers. Water is a fascinating and complex substance: not only is water itself a resource, but it is also a main pathway for energy and chemical transfer in the Earth-atmosphere system.

Environmental Geography: Science, Land Use, And Earth Systems By William M.Marsh And John M. Grossa, Eric Matranga

The Geographical Bulletin

Environmental Geography is an introductory text for undergraduate instruction. Marsh and Grossa recognize a lack of geographic perspectives in such texts. They set as their task, building "on the traditional themes of geography". Concepts covered include environmental systems, principles of space, scale and distributions, and landscape as the result of human-environment interaction.

The Geography Of South Dakota. Edward By P. Hogan, Donald J. Berg

The Geographical Bulletin

Edward P. Hogan has done a considerable service for the people of South Dakota through writing The Geography of South Dakota, the first such volume in 78 years. It is a book that was long overdue, but such a project also needs the right person at the right place and the right time to author it.

The Heat/Humidity Quandary: A Case Study Of New England, Carl F. Ojala, William Babcock Jan 2025

The Heat/Humidity Quandary: A Case Study Of New England, Carl F. Ojala, William Babcock

The Geographical Bulletin

When the occasional heat wave occurs during summer, people often bemoan the unbearable temperature and humidity conditions. Most of us have heard, and maybe even used, the statement " 90°F. temperature and 90% relative humidity." This exceptional weather condition, based on popular confusion of the temperature/relative humidity concept, generally seems to be perceived as possible by most people. In this research, a 30- year archive approaching one million data sets for seven New England cities was examined to determine the validity of such an expression. Hourly summer temperature, dew point, and relative humidity data were analyzed. From 1961 to 1990 …

The Geographic Society And Gamma Theta Upsilon At Arizona State University, Malcolm L. Comeaux

The Geographical Bulletin

Throughout most of the history of Arizona State University (founded in 1885) there has been a strong student organization devoted to the study of geography and the state of Arizona . This organization was established early, and once established, it always existed. A club such as this one is particularly important to students, since belonging to a small group leads to comraderie and lifelong friendships, and it can be a valuable learning experience. One of the main goals of the geography student organization was always the taking offield trips, and such field trips are fondly remembered by ex-members. Prof. Fred …

Assessment Of The Growth, Nature, And Character Of Three Squatter Settlements In The Durban Functional Area, Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa, Hari P. Garbharran Jan 2025

Assessment Of The Growth, Nature, And Character Of Three Squatter Settlements In The Durban Functional Area, Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa, Hari P. Garbharran

The Geographical Bulletin

This paper examines the growth, nature, and character of three informal settlement complexes in the Durban Functional Region (DFR) in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Informal settlements or jondolas have become a permanent feature of the South African landscape since democracy. During the apartheid era (1948 to 1994) these structures were temporary, existed in the shadow of metropolitan areas, and faced removal. The post-apartheid period has been characterized by an upsurge in the development of informal settlements especially around metropolitan areas. Restrictions imposed upon certain segments of the population since colonial times have been crushed. In some instances, t hese unplanned settlements …

Third World Development And Population: A Reflection, Engdawork Desta Jan 2025

Third World Development And Population: A Reflection, Engdawork Desta

The Geographical Bulletin

In a world of plenty, many countries continue to suffer from lack of basic necessities. Development might be a controversial issue, however, the reason for Third World countries remain underdeveloped is certainly not because of absence of resources or lack of know-how. The relationship between development and population might also be direct but it is not necessarily negative all the time. If the potentials of science and technology are released, most of the constraints of economic sustainability would probably be overcome within a few years.

Projections And Perceptions Editorial Comment: The Limits Of Convergence; Nature, Nurture, And Growth, Jeffrey D. Sachs Jan 2025

Projections And Perceptions Editorial Comment: The Limits Of Convergence; Nature, Nurture, And Growth, Jeffrey D. Sachs

The Geographical Bulletin

For the first time in history, almost all of the world's people are bound together in a global capitalist system. This momentous development forces us to think anew about the world economy. In the past, differences in policies across regions of the world resulted in vast differences in economic performance; in the future, policies are likely to be more similar. As a result, large parts of the developing world will narrow the income gap between themselves and richer nations. But this process of convergence, by itself, will go only so far. With or without markets, many developing countries will be …

"When I Was Young . .. "- Perceptions Of Past Winters By Elderly Residents Of Northwest Wisconsin, Michael J. Tronrud, D. E. Petzold Jan 2025

"When I Was Young . .. "- Perceptions Of Past Winters By Elderly Residents Of Northwest Wisconsin, Michael J. Tronrud, D. E. Petzold

The Geographical Bulletin

Young people today often hear their eIders talk about the severe winters oftheir youth, noting colder, snowier times in the past. A survey of elderly residents of NW Wisconsin documents their perceptions of past winters. The results of this survey were then related to an nual and decade mean winter temperature and snowfal l data from the same region for the period, 1920 to 1996. It appears that memories of the most severe winter weather are connected with childhood. A majority of respondents chose the 1930s as being the coldest decade in memory. In reality, it was not. Only one …

News From The Chapters 1997-1998, C. Nicholas Raphael

The Geographical Bulletin

The 1997-98 school year saw an increase in volunteering for GTU members. A new initiation criterion for members is to donate five hours for the semester at any of the many off campus sites that needed help. This is an activity sponsored through the Campus Volunteer Center and is a good way to offer community service. We hosted two successful canoe trips this year: the fall trip was on our own Evergreen Lake and the spring trip was on the Vermillion River. Our members, along with the Anthropology Club, continued to keep our ISU Nature Trail clean with regularly scheduled …

The Geography Of Kuwaiti Oil Transportation 1970-1980, Waleed Ai-Menais Jan 2025

The Geography Of Kuwaiti Oil Transportation 1970-1980, Waleed Ai-Menais

The Geographical Bulletin

The transportation of oil from Kuwait between the years 1970- 80, which was a period of relative political stability, is discussed. Based on physical, geopolitical and economic factors the country elected to use tankers rather than pipelines as did many other Gulf countries. During the period 1970- 80 the oil field to transport facilities, onshore and offshore rapidly expanded and technologically improved. Paralleling this active growth, oil tanker construction and capacity had increased. In recent years geopolitical circumstances in Kuwait and emerging Asian markets justify the option of tankers moving oil via the Gulf over pipeline transport to Mediterranean ports.

Latino Migration To Green Bay, Wisconsin In The 1990s, Marcelo Cruz Jan 2025

Latino Migration To Green Bay, Wisconsin In The 1990s, Marcelo Cruz

The Geographical Bulletin

This paper explores Latino urban migration to Green Bay, Wisconsin, an intermediate size city of approximately 100,000 people. Wealth Generation In Metropolitan America: F.I.R.E. As Savior?, Darryl T. Cohen, Keith G. Debbage Jan 2025

Wealth Generation In Metropolitan America: F.I.R.E. As Savior?, Darryl T. Cohen, Keith G. Debbage

The Geographical Bulletin

The current restructuring of the American economy from goods producing industry to service providing industry has been a focus of concern for many social scientists. While some argue in favor of the rapidly expanding service sector, pointing out that growth in services creates employment and generates income, others emphasize that many service sector jobs pay considerably less than comparable manufacturing sector jobs, which continue to be lost in many metropolitan areas. The Finance, Insurance and Real Estate (F.I.R.E.) industry in particular, is a branch of the service sector that is often associated with the generation of affluence and productivity. This …

The Relevance Of Gamma Theta Upsilon To Geography In The 1990s, James A. Tyner, Daniel Donaldson Jan 2025

The Relevance Of Gamma Theta Upsilon To Geography In The 1990s, James A. Tyner, Daniel Donaldson

The Geographical Bulletin

The status of geography has long been a concern to its practitioners. Efforts have been proposed to increase both the visibility and vitality of geography at all educational levels. These efforts include the activities of social organizations such as Gamma Theta Upsilon (GTU). This paper tests the hypothesis that geography departments with active chapters of Gamma Theta Upsilon, a geography honor society, will experience a greater increase in declared geography majors than will departments with inactive GTU chapters. Findings confirm our hypothesis, and suggest that Gamma Theta Upsilon, as a visible and active honor society on university campuses, does contribute …

Projections And Perceptions Editorial Comment: Has Land Use Development Lost Touch With The American Landscape? The Need For Geographers In Planning, William M. Marsh Jan 2025

Projections And Perceptions Editorial Comment: Has Land Use Development Lost Touch With The American Landscape? The Need For Geographers In Planning, William M. Marsh

The Geographical Bulletin

There is a predictable sameness creeping over the fact of the North American landscape. In the past several decades, highways, shopping centers, residential subdivisions and most other forms of development have taken on a remarkable similarity from coast to coast. Not only do they look alike, but modern developments also tend to function alike, including the way they relate to the environment; that is, in the way land is cleared and graded, streets are laid out, stormwater is drained, buildings are sited and designed, and landscaping is arranged. We know that this fa~ade of development masks an inherently diverse landscape …

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) play a pivotal role in various domains, including monitoring, security, and data transmission. However, their susceptibility to intrusions poses a significant challenge. This paper proposes a novel Intrusion Detection System (IDS) leveraging Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and an ensemble machine learning approach combining Random Forest (RF), Decision Tree (DT), and K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) models to enhance the accuracy and reliability of intrusion detection in WSNs. The system addresses key challenges such as the imbalanced nature of datasets and the evolving complexity of network attacks. By incorporating Synthetic Minority Oversampling Technique Tomek (SMOTE-Tomek) techniques to balance the …

Examining The Creative Process Of Visual Artists: A Phenomenological Study, Filiberto Vargas Jan 2025

Examining The Creative Process Of Visual Artists: A Phenomenological Study, Filiberto Vargas

Dissertations

Creativity fuels problem solving and innovation, driving both economic growth and individual success. Yet, many schools and organizations fail to nurture it. Today, there is a decline in creativity scores among U.S. students. This is concerning since many of these students will be the future leaders of organizations and communities. For this reason, this dissertation explores the creative process of visual artists to better understand how creativity can be cultivated. Visual artists' perspectives and sense-and-meaning-making processes offer a unique view of innovation and creativity. However, there is limited research on the creative processes of contemporary visual artists from culturally diverse …
