Appalachian Kentucky: Some Comments Concerning Poverty And The Nature Of The Banking Network In The Region, Wendy Shaw Jan 2025

Appalachian Kentucky: Some Comments Concerning Poverty And The Nature Of The Banking Network In The Region, Wendy Shaw

The Geographical Bulletin

The Appalachian region has been a core of poverty for many decades. In this research, some changes in the extent and nature Qf poverty in the region are presented that suggest despite extensive programs designed to combat poverty, a core of intense poverty still persists. While significant improvements have been made in such areas as transportation, it seems clear that some roots of poverty in the region have not been addressed. It is argued that one neglected area involves the banking network in eastern Kentucky. This contention is supported by analyzing banking data concerning the internal banking network within the …

Psychometric Development Of Scales Measuring Attitudes About And Interest In Integrated Healthcare Clinical Practice, Mark Cassano, Robert A. Ditomasso, Barbara A. Golden, Scott D. Glassman

The Journal of Integrated Primary Care

The landscape of integrated healthcare models continues to evolve, and with these changes, providers are facing the challenge of adopting approaches to care that may not have been taught in their training. With interprofessional education on the rise, some providers often struggle to modify their clinical methodology to accommodate an interdisciplinary team-based care format. In an effort to better understand the attitudes and interest levels that may affect a provider’s engagement in these models of care, the Integrated Health Attitudes and Interest Scales were developed. Using a best practices model, items for the measure were created by the investigators and …

The Journal of Integrated Primary Care

Brief alcohol interventions (BAIs) are an evidence-based practice for addressing hazardous drinking among primary care patients, yet implementation of BAIs in practice has been difficult and disparities have been identified regarding implementing BAIs with women and racial/ethnic minority patients. Further, patient engagement is a commonly identified barrier to BAI implementation. This mixed methods study aimed to assess acceptability of BAIs among women and racial/ethnic minority primary care patients and to identify factors that may impact their receptivity to engaging in a BAI. Qualitative interviews were conducted with 17 patients who had screened positive for hazardous alcohol use. Patients reported neutral …

Meditation In Qualitative Research For Bracketing And Beyond, Katalin Grajzel Jan 2025

Meditation In Qualitative Research For Bracketing And Beyond, Katalin Grajzel

Research Methods and Statistics: Graduate Student Scholarship

In this study, I recounted my experience using mantra meditation during a phenomenological study for the purposes of bracketing. The efficacy and purpose of bracketing have been debated from Husserl (1931), whose aimed was to achieve objectivity, to Heidegger (1962) who advocated for immersion of the researcher, through the French school (Merleau-Ponty, 1964) of middle ground, by whom bracketing was seen as the process to unearth and suspend biases for the better understanding of participants’ experiences (Arsel, 2017; Creswell & Creswell, 2017; Creswell & Poth, 2016; Fischer & Guzel, 2023). In this study, however, I propose another approach to bracketing …

Break It Down - Examining Paradigmatic Shifts And Intersectional Devaluation Through Quantitative Exploration: Martial Arts And Narrative Inquiry As Pathways For Community Wellness Programming, Kenisha Coy Jan 2025

Break It Down - Examining Paradigmatic Shifts And Intersectional Devaluation Through Quantitative Exploration: Martial Arts And Narrative Inquiry As Pathways For Community Wellness Programming, Kenisha Coy

Educational Studies Dissertations

Despite growing awareness of health disparities and social exclusion, there remains a significant gap in understanding how devaluation affects both individual well-being and broader community cohesion. Historically, mental health services have been dominated by clinical settings, such as hospitals and private practices, yet this approach has limitations in reaching underserved populations. "Alternative" and "non-traditional" wellness practices offer promising avenues for promoting emotional well-being outside these traditional settings, leveraging community resources and social support networks, yet they are often overlooked and devalued. This dissertation addresses this gap by exploring the complex connections between devaluation, health outcomes, and community engagement/social capital. Using …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Introduction: The annual prevalence of elder mistreatment (EM) in cognitively intact older adults is estimated to be 11%, yet the annual prevalence in older adults with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (AD/ADRD) is estimated to be as high as 75%. Associated with a decrease in quality of life and increase in risk of mortality, EM represents a significant public health burden. Home-based primary care (HBPC) providers are uniquely positioned to address the critical need for robust EM screening and reporting, especially among individuals with AD/ADRD. This protocol seeks to adapt the Detection of Elder mistreatment Through Emergency Care Technicians (DETECT) …

Clarifying The Language Of Mindfulness: A Review Of Terminology In Western Psychological Approaches, D'Arcy Nr Madden Jan 2025

Clarifying The Language Of Mindfulness: A Review Of Terminology In Western Psychological Approaches, D'Arcy Nr Madden

Mindfulness Studies Theses

The rapid adoption of mindfulness in Western healthcare and psychological frameworks has exposed the complexity of defining this multifaceted concept across diverse contexts. To demonstrate the multidimensional nature of mindfulness, this analysis examines how Western psychological frameworks, representing its most recent adaptation, use varying terminology to describe it. By documenting the prevalence of these terminological variations, this paper makes a case for creating an expanded annotated glossary of modern mindfulness terms, arguing that examining diverse perspectives alongside their common elements enables a deeper understanding of the concept. The proposed glossary will capture and clarify a range of interpretations and applications …

Visual Mindful Autoethnography In Practice: Integrating Visual Expressive Art And Self-Compassion Into The Research Process, Jennifer Bentley

Mindfulness Studies Theses

This thesis introduces the framework of Visual Mindful Autoethnography (VmAE) which integrates mindfulness, self-compassion, and creative visual expression as tools for reflexive self-inquiry within the research process. Grounded in the principles of autoethnography and mindfulness, VmAE fosters a deep engagement with personal narratives, biases, and cultural contexts while encouraging emotional resilience, self-awareness, and ethical integrity. By utilizing techniques such as expressive art and visual process journalling, this approach re-presents the inner emotional landscape while facilitating a balanced exploration of subjective experience. The framework is supported by the “P.A.C.E. Research with C.A.R.E.” model, which establishes mindfulness and self-compassion as foundational principles …

Ifá And Mindfulness: Two Distinct Practices With Parallel Concepts To Improve Mental Health, Frank Matias Jan 2025

Ifá And Mindfulness: Two Distinct Practices With Parallel Concepts To Improve Mental Health, Frank Matias

Mindfulness Studies Theses

This research compares the West African Ifá tradition with Western mindfulness in promoting mental health and well-being. Both Ifá and mindfulness aim to strengthen the mind and enhance awareness. Negative emotions like anger, grief, and confusion disturb our peace and composure, leading to reactive responses. Negative emotions can significantly affect our mental well-being. Ifá and mindfulness practices support each other by improving cognitive skills and raising awareness of challenges. I will analyze the Ifá principles of Orí (head/mind), Òríṣàs (emotional guidance), Ìwá-pèlé (good character/patience), Ese Ifá (poetic verses), and Odù Ifá (binary code/Ifá literary corpus) alongside the mindfulness practice of …

« Au Cœur Du Harem » Et Du Métissage Linguistique D’Elisa Chimenti En Italien : Comparaison Différentielle Et Décentrement Linguistique, Pierpaolo Amenta

Al-Kīmiyā

This article examines the literary language of Elisa Chimenti (1883-1969), which is full of xenisms, linguistic loans, metaphors, and idioms that stem from a transcultural and heterolingual imaginary. Her novel Au cœur du harem (Éditions du Scorpion, 1958), translated into Italian in 2000 under the supervision of Emanuela Benini (Edizioni E/O), is a striking example. Drawing on a differential comparative approach (Heidmann, 2017), we look at these texts to reflect on Elisa Chimenti’s literary language and to examine the translational stakes of her work and its heterolingualism (Grutman, 1997; Suchet, 2014).

Les Origines Du Français Sur Objectifs Spécifiques : Regards Historiques, Mariam Sahraoui

Al-Kīmiyā

As a continuation of our research work on the teaching of French for Specific Purposes, we recommend to better define the specificities of this concept by going back to its origins as a means to understand its dimensions, its structures, its actors, etc. Indeed, the concept of French for Specific Purposes (FOS in French) appeared in the 1920s. FOS has undergone several phases of evolution that have marked its historical and methodological journey from military French to the language of specialization, to instrumental French, to functional French.
This article presents FOS’s journey through its history for the purpose of identifying …

Arguments D’Autorité Dans Les Éditoriaux Du Quotidien « Aujourd’Hui Le Maroc » : Analyse Des Périodes Pré Et Post Vaccination, Zakaria Ouallou

Al-Kīmiyā

The Covid-19 health crisis, which shook the world in 2020, aroused keen interest not only in the media, but also among citizens, at the international level. This study focuses on the analysis of arguments of authority, which are powerful tools in editorial rhetoric, used to support positions by relying on recognized sources, focusing specifically on editorials in the French-speaking Moroccan newspaper Aujourd’hui le Maroc, relating to two phases, that of containment and that of vaccination. This period was marked by major health, social, economic and political upheavals. In this context, we will examine the editorialists’ choice of arguments in …

Communication Interculturelle : Regards Croisés Sur L’Expression De La Gratitude Dans Les Contextes Marocain Et Français, Salaheddine Belarbi, Mohamad El Jarari

Al-Kīmiyā

This study aims to compare the communicative practices between French spoken in France and Moroccan Arabic, focusing on the acts of thanking. The aim is to understand the underlying cultural differences through a comparative analysis of speech acts, particularly the acts of thanking, in both languages. The study falls within the field of contrastive pragmatics, which seeks to identify intercultural correspondences and dissonances in linguistic behavior. The results highlight that the comparison between the act of thanking in Morocco and in France reveals profound nuances in the way gratitude is expressed and perceived within these distinct cultures. Notwithstanding these differences, …

Les Fonctions Du Langage Dans « Lettres À Ses Amis » De Mouloud Feraoun, Rachida Sadouni, Fatiha Ramdani, Amina Tahraoui

Al-Kīmiyā

This article examines the epistolary correspondence in Mouloud Feraoun’s literary work Lettres à ses amis. It mainly aims to study the language functions employed in these letters according to Jakobson’s categorization (1963), as well as the traces of subjectivity and privacy. This paper analyzes the personality of Feraoun through his letters, and infers the characteristics of this writer’s epistolary. This article also examines Feraoun’s work from its conception to its final publication. We argue in this paper that the epistolary is not only a means of information and communication but also a revelation of secrets and disclosure of individual …

Family-Based Mindfulness: A Curriculum Guide For A Four-Week Program, Megan Hauser-Cleveland Jan 2025

Family-Based Mindfulness: A Curriculum Guide For A Four-Week Program, Megan Hauser-Cleveland

Mindfulness Studies Theses

This thesis argues that, compared to a traditional parent-only mindful parenting program, a family-based mindfulness program will more effectively support parental caregivers in developing secure attachments with their adolescent children, which is essential for healthy youth development and well-being. The rationale for this project examines the development and outcomes of secure and insecure attachment, the impact of trauma on youth mental health and parenting practices, how mindfulness can support emotional regulation, and the benefits and concerns of mindful parenting programs. The creative project for this thesis draws from the literature to create a comprehensive format for a family-based mindfulness program …

Mindful Of God: Meditation Practices Within Abrahamic Traditions, Jacob Aqua Jan 2025

Mindful Of God: Meditation Practices Within Abrahamic Traditions, Jacob Aqua

Mindfulness Studies Theses

Through the exploration of meditation practices within Islam, Judaism, and Christianity, this paper emphasizes the shared intention among practitioners of these Abrahamic traditions to connect with the Divine Presence of God in daily life. In modern America, where religious diversity and secularism coexist, meditation practices have gained traction in spiritual settings, secular spaces, religious communities, and other environments. This paper reviews three key meditation practices: the dhikr practice in Islam, the “Just Being” Shabbat practice in Judaism, and the “Silence as a Door to God” practice in Christianity. Through this review, significant phenomenological parallels emerge: the practices of cultivating stillness …
