Rediscovering The Roots Of Moroccan Geography In An Era Of Interdependence, Donald J. Zeigler, Driss Fassi
Rediscovering The Roots Of Moroccan Geography In An Era Of Interdependence, Donald J. Zeigler, Driss Fassi
The Geographical Bulletin
The indigenous traditions of Moroccan geography, pioneered by such figures as AI Idrisi and Ibn Khaldun during the classical period of Arab intellectual history (1000-1400), came to be ignored and then replaced with the establishment of a French protectorate in 1912. The era of independence in Moroccan geography was supplanted by an era of dependence on European scholarship, which emphasized resource exploitation and which was to last until political independence in 1956. Following that watershed year, intellectual inquiry became more independent and focused on the development needs of the nation. Following a period of Moroccanization in the 1970s, which included …
The Electoral Geography Of Oregon's Ballot Measure 16: The Death With Dignity Act, Kathleen O'Reilly
The Electoral Geography Of Oregon's Ballot Measure 16: The Death With Dignity Act, Kathleen O'Reilly
The Geographical Bulletin
On November 8, 1994 Oregon became the first state in the nation to pass legislation allowing terminally ill patients to end their own lives with the assistance of a physician. Ballot Measure 16, the Death with Dignity Act, removes criminal penalties for assisting a terminally ill suicide, but does not allow lethal injection. In August 1995, U.S. District Judge Michael Hogan ruled the Death with Dignity Act violates the equal protection clause ofthe 14th Amendment. The ruling is being appealed. This paper investigates electoral voting patterns regarding Measure 16 in the 36 Oregon counties. It explores the relationships between votes …
Hydrogeomorphic Response Of A Coastal Plain Stream To Tributary Channelization, Elizabeth J. Nabb, David Shankman
Hydrogeomorphic Response Of A Coastal Plain Stream To Tributary Channelization, Elizabeth J. Nabb, David Shankman
The Geographical Bulletin
The Hatchie River in western Tennessee is one of the few remaining free-flowing streams in the Gulf Coastal Plain. Although there have been no major modifications of the main channel, many of its tributaries have been channelized during the past few decades. Channelization has significantly reduced flooding in the upper sections of the watershed. The straightened and hydrologically more efficient channels, however, speed the flow of water that scours the channel bed. Sediment derived from these unstable channels is transported downstream and into the main channel. An examination of changes in bed elevation indicate that the depth and therefore cross-sectional …
Projections And Perceptions Editorial Comment: The Human Factor In Recent Climate Change Remains Unproven, Carl F. Ojala
Projections And Perceptions Editorial Comment: The Human Factor In Recent Climate Change Remains Unproven, Carl F. Ojala
The Geographical Bulletin
Global warming, the theory and controversy involving artificial enhancement of the greenhouse effect of the atmosphere, has emerged as one of the prime environmental issues of recent years. Proponents conclude it may produce serious worldwide problems in the near future, such as rising sea levels, geographic shifts in farming and forest regions, and changes in agricultural yields, water resources, and wetlands. Conversely, skeptics imply that any warming due to proposed increases in greenhouse gases is undetectable and unpredictable among the natural variations in long-term atmospheric temperatures.
Dunbar’S Number In Motion: Agent-Based Simulations Of Friendship Formation, Christopher R. Cooke, Cameron D. Lutz
Dunbar’S Number In Motion: Agent-Based Simulations Of Friendship Formation, Christopher R. Cooke, Cameron D. Lutz
Northeast Journal of Complex Systems (NEJCS)
By contrasting Lévy flight and random walk strategies in simulated agents, we discern the effect of movement behavior on the total duration of social interactions. Our agent-based simulation results approximate empirically observed Dunbar social circle formation using simple behavioral rules of interaction and compatibility to mimic exogenous attribute-based friendship formation. We simulate the complexities of social interactions among agents with unique attributes and a time budget for social engagement over a one-year period. Two distinct simulations were conducted to evaluate the behavioral contributions of Lévy flight and random walk movement patterns on cumulative interaction duration and the formation of Dunbar …
How To Become A Soldier In The Black Liberation Army: Sixteen Tomes, Tony Gaskew
How To Become A Soldier In The Black Liberation Army: Sixteen Tomes, Tony Gaskew
Peace and Conflict Studies Journal Conference
From 1970 to 1983, it is estimated that the Black Liberation Army (BLA), by way of armed resistance in the name of revolutionary justice, was responsible for expropriating the lives of dozens of police officers across the United States of America. Yes, as unbelievable, and as extra-terrestrial as it might sound today, there was a very brief period in U.S. history when there were consequences for indiscriminate acts of police violence against the Black community. However, in the fields of conflict resolution and peace studies, the BLA is invisible. As a Black man who was born and raised in the …

The Role Of U.S. Leadership In Resolving Indo-Pak Ensuring Rivalry, Abdul Sadiq Khan
The Role Of U.S. Leadership In Resolving Indo-Pak Ensuring Rivalry, Abdul Sadiq Khan
Peace and Conflict Studies Journal Conference
The partition of British India in 1947 and the subsequent events caused a great deal of mutual mistrust that has persisted in the bilateral ties between Pakistan and India for seven decades. Post-Partition India inherited the state infrastructure of the British. Pakistan, on the other hand, has to build its state apparatus from the ground up. Indian leadership was certain that the nascent state of Pakistan would not survive and eventually reunify with India. The two countries are marked by the history of wars like in 1948, 1965, and 1999 over Jammu and Kashmir. Pakistan and India appear to be …
A Study Of The Intra-Government Conflictual Approach In The Management Of The Herdsmen-Farmers Conflict-Induced Internal Displacement In Benue State, Nigeria, Rita Iorbo
Peace and Conflict Studies Journal Conference
Abstract
The management of the herdsmen-farmers conflict-induced internal displacement in Benue State, Nigeria was characterized by the conflictual approach of the Benue State government and disagreement over displacement data by humanitarian agencies. The study explored the inter-connected relationship among stakeholders within the humanitarian eco-system and its effects on protection measures and durable solutions for the conflict-induced displacement crisis. The qualitative study was conducted among twenty-three adult females and males comprising internally displaced persons (IDPs), and humanitarian workers in the government and non-governmental humanitarian sectors. The study findings show that though the herdsmen-farmers conflict accounts for mass population displacement, loss of …
The Ukraine Crisis Narrative In Western Scholarship, Nikos Lekakis Dr, Alexander Katsaitis Dr
The Ukraine Crisis Narrative In Western Scholarship, Nikos Lekakis Dr, Alexander Katsaitis Dr
Peace and Conflict Studies Journal Conference
This paper examines the current Ukraine crisis that has deep geopolitical roots and often closely tied to the Euromaidan movement, outlining noticeable disagreements within the western academia regarding its interpretation by international relations theories and Russian history. On the one hand, institutional liberalists have been arguing that Russia’s aggression originates from Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has selected Ukraine, on the basis of its strategic location in central Europe, to be the beginning of an effort to reconstruct a new Soviet Union or at least to create a new sphere of influence in Russia’s near borders, bond European security …
The United States Of America V. Darren Seals, Tony Gaskew
The United States Of America V. Darren Seals, Tony Gaskew
Peace and Conflict Studies Journal Conference
The United States of America has an insatiable appetite for the corpses of Black men. Although only a silent whisper in the field of conflict resolution, Black men and boys face unprecedented levels of state-sponsored direct, structural, and metaphysical violence. Empirical evidence regarding disparities within the nuanced constructs of police killings, stop-and-frisk searches, educational attainment, unemployment, mortality rates, mass incarceration, and all forms of covert counterinsurgency (COIN) operations shows that Black men are without question, enemies of the state and what Leonard Harris calls the ultimate “necro-being.” You see, on September 6, 2016, 29-year-old Black male anti-police activist Darren Seals …

From The Freedom Train: A Historical Perspective On Dr. Joseph L. White, Kimberly M. Wesley
Psychology from the Margins
This paper explores the generational impact of the late Dr. Joseph L. White, the Father of Black Psychology. During a time when psychology lacked cultural awareness, Dr. White pioneered a wave of institutional and community change among Black Psychology. Through his Academic Freedom Train, a mentoring system inspired by the Underground Railroad System, Dr. White influenced an interconnected network of mentees committed to decolonizing psychology and promoting Black Psychology. The paper frames the history of racism in psychology in the context of Dr. White's life, his role in promoting Black Psychology, and his commitment to mentees. Dr. White's legacy and …

Music Therapy In The Scope Of Psychology: From Asylums To Contemporary Practice, Rachel A. Mirsen
Psychology from the Margins
This paper explores the historical ties between music therapy and psychology, tracing its evolution from its origins in asylums to contemporary practice. By examining historical records and recent case studies, the dynamic interplay between music therapy, psychological practices, and sociocultural factors is highlighted. The paper compares the use of music therapy in the 20th century, particularly in psychiatric asylums, to its modern-day applications, focusing on two healthcare facilities in New Jersey: Overbrook Hospital and Bancroft NeuroRehab. Through this comparison, it becomes evident that music therapy has gained legitimacy and specialization over time, transitioning from recreational activities to evidence-based, individualized interventions …
Suburbanization As A Post-Industrial Essentiality: Revisiting Sweden's Miljonprogrammet, Colin Wood
Suburbanization As A Post-Industrial Essentiality: Revisiting Sweden's Miljonprogrammet, Colin Wood
Swarthmore Undergraduate History Journal
Definitively speaking, suburbanization does not equate to post-industrialism in the same limelight as would urbanization and industrialism. However, anomalous cases, such as the one being discussed in this paper, tangentially interlink on a socioeconomic basis. In 1965, Sweden began construction of the Miljonprogrammet (Million Programme), where over the next ten years, over one million domiciles were built in a suburban setting leading to a mass diaspora of ‘slum living’ Swedish industrial workers. The nation’s renowned welfare state, built on a collaborative system between public and private sectors as well as federal and municipal actors, overlooked housing in its social …
Critical (G)Race Theory: A Biblical Response To The Growing Secular Social Justice Movement, Tyler A. Keaton
Critical (G)Race Theory: A Biblical Response To The Growing Secular Social Justice Movement, Tyler A. Keaton
Masters Theses
Critical Race Theory is a worldview that has taken the social justice world by storm in recent years and has even begun to present itself within the teachings of much of the Church. Oftentimes, secular social justice looks to scripture due to the commands for justice found therein to justify their goal of racial justice and equity. However, while the causes of secular social justice movements and CRT are noble, the ideologies and methods they employ are unbiblical and immoral in many instances. CRT itself is a worldview that promotes further injustices that are just as immoral, if not more …

Reflections On The Belfast/Good Friday Agreement, Alina Gamboa Combs
Reflections On The Belfast/Good Friday Agreement, Alina Gamboa Combs
Journal of Critical Global Issues
The 1998 Belfast Agreement, also known as the Good Friday Agreement (B/GFA), is considered a milestone for brokering peace and moving forward past the period known as the “Troubles” that plagued Northern Ireland for three decades (1961-1994). An overwhelming majority: 71 percent of the electorate in Northern Ireland (81 percent voter turnout) voted yes to the question, “Do you support the Agreement reached in the Multi-Party Talks?” giving the B/GFA and the subsequent legally binding British-Irish Agreement (BIA) strong public support. Since its signing, the B/GFA has been implemented in part. A key component, forming a Northern Ireland Assembly and …

Exploring The Pathogen Profiles Of Ancient Feces, Drew Capone, David Holcomb, Amanda Lai, Karl Reinhard, Joe Brown
Karl Reinhard Publications
Analysis of ancient desiccated feces – termed paleofeces or coprolites – can unlock insights into the lives of ancient people. We collected desiccated feces from caves in the Rio Zape Valley in Mexico (725-920 CE). First, we extracted DNA with methods previously optimized for paleofeces. Then, we applied highly sensitive modern molecular tools (i.e., PCR pre-amplification followed by multi-parallel qPCR) to assess the presence of 30 enteric pathogens. We detected ≥1 pathogen associated gene in each of the ten samples and a mean of 3.9 pathogens per sample. The targets detected included Blastocystis spp. (n=7), atypical enteropathogenic E. coli (n=7), …

Power Relations In The Context Of Literacy Improvement In East Java, Indonesia, Moh Ilham A Hamudy, M. Saidi Rifki
Jurnal Wacana Politik
This study examines power relations in the context of literacy improvement in East Java Province. In addition to the persistent stagnation in TGM and IPLM scores, the Library and Archive Office (Dispusip) of East Java Province also faces unequal access to and varying quality of library services, which are crucial in improving literacy levels in East Java. These challenges are deeply intertwined with power relations, where leaders wield dominant influence over decision-making processes and policy implementation. This study employed a combination of descriptive and literature review methods, with data analysis conducted through a qualitative approach. It uncovered various factors and …

Workplace conflict can arise from negative attitudes, lazy coworkers, and stress. In most cases, conflict can be instigated by managers, supervisors, colleagues, or the employer's inability to meet specific demands or provide necessary resources. The aftermath of workplace conflict can be detrimental, destructive, and expensive when it escalates. Conflict can be a significant source of stress at work. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of participants in regard to the nature of conflict, motivational tools, and strategies for conflict prevention. This study was directed by theoretical frameworks, including post-positivism, dual concern theory, social cognitive …
Understanding The Impact Of Covid-19 On The Mental Health Of Children And Parents During The Pandemic, Whitney S. Gray
Understanding The Impact Of Covid-19 On The Mental Health Of Children And Parents During The Pandemic, Whitney S. Gray
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The COVID-19 pandemic presented parents with stressors that affected their well-being and their life satisfaction. The pandemic caused parents to struggle with balancing their families’ needs and maintaining their happiness. Prior to the pandemic, children and adolescents had a routine that accommodated their daily functioning and provided them with social contact. The pandemic added stress with parents working odd hours at work, having to adjust to their child’s school schedules, and not being able to contribute to their support system. In addition to these daily stressors, parents had to consider the precautions surrounding COVID-19 and the worries attached to the …
A Qualitative Phenomenological Study Of Military Veterans' Lived Experiences With The Cultural Transition Process: Navigating From The Military Culture To Civilian Life, Claudia Flores
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore the process of cultural reintegration of service members from the military culture to the civilian culture, and to critically examine the implementation of existing Department of Defense (DoD) military transition policies designed to facilitate this reintegration. Policy implementation theory, pioneered by Jeffrey Pressman and Aaron Wildavsky, served as a framework to evaluate the efficacy of the DoD’s Transition Assistance Program (TAP) in supporting cultural reintegration. The study also drew upon the military transition theory, pioneered by Carl Castro and Sara Kintzle, which highlights the acculturation challenges faced by veterans, due …

The Relationship Between Solidarity And Job Satisfaction, Burnout, Work Stress, And Turnover Intention, Marcella R. Ronyak
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This quantitative study examined the relationship between supervisor-subordinate solidarity and subordinates’ level of job satisfaction among Indian Health Services (IHS) employees. Research has indicated that supervisor solidarity influenced job satisfaction, which allowed job satisfaction to serve as a mediator variable to negatively induce burnout and work stress and positively impact turnover intention. This study examined these variables using the Interpersonal Solidarity Scale © (Wheeless, 1976), Job Satisfaction Survey © (Spector, 1985), Maslach Burnout Inventory (Maslach & Jackson, 1981), Perceived Stress Scale (Cohen & Williamson, 1988), and Turnover Intention (adapted Wei-Yuan et al., 2023). Correlations were used to analyze relationships between …

Exploring The Influence Of Police Officers Lived Experiences On Implementing Community Oriented Policing Of Marginalized Populations, Herman "Tracy" Williams Iii
Exploring The Influence Of Police Officers Lived Experiences On Implementing Community Oriented Policing Of Marginalized Populations, Herman "Tracy" Williams Iii
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The oppositional relationship between the police and communities characterized as marginalized populations aptly describes an adversarial dynamic that hinders the effective implementation of guardian-focused, community-oriented policing. Fears of crime, claims of police bias, dehumanization, and perceptions of social disorder frequently breed socioeconomic decline in these communities. These conditions often contribute to citizens of marginalized communities viewing police officers as traditional policing warriors versus the roles of police as guardians who assist and protect the public. The problem is that the lack of cooperation and mutual distrust in interactions between the police and communities leads to external friction and internal organizational …
