Youth Experiences Of Participation, Inclusion, And Influence Within A Youth-Serving Organization Implementing Participatory Processes, Rhen M. Miles Feb 2025

Youth Experiences Of Participation, Inclusion, And Influence Within A Youth-Serving Organization Implementing Participatory Processes, Rhen M. Miles

Dissertations and Theses

The youth development field has undergone shifts and reconstructions in how youth are conceived, impacting the approaches of youth-serving programs attempting to facilitate learning, growth, and engagement. Evolving views inform how policymakers, funders, and youth-serving agencies perceive and relate with youth. In turn, these dynamics influence how youth learn to think about themselves, others, and the world. Dominant discourse regarding youth development has been shifting from a deficit-based to an asset-based lens, with the proliferation of Positive Youth Development (PYD) frameworks, which seek to cultivate internal strengths and positive developmental outcomes rather than just prevent negative behaviors and outcomes. Despite …

"I'Ll Just Say It's Been A Racist Process": The Power Dynamics Within And Outside Diversity Requirement Classrooms At A Minority-Serving Institution, Kazusa Seko

Dissertations and Theses

U.S. higher educational institutions have increasingly implemented diversity requirements; however, institutional power dynamics during the implementation process and in a classroom after the implementation should be more highlighted. This study aims to understand the implementation of a diversity requirement during the implementation process and faculty and student experiences within required diversity courses at Portland State University (PSU) by analyzing one-on-one semi-structured interviews. PSU is a minority-serving educational institution that implemented a diversity requirement, the Race and Ethnic Studies Requirement (RESR), in Fall 2022. These data are analyzed through Critical Race Theory (CRT) lenses--introducing Okun's (2021) white supremacy culture in an …

Are Positive And Negative Leader Humor Two Different Coins? A Meta-Analysis, Xiaohong Xu, Richard Hayes, Lixin Jiang, William P. Jimenez Feb 2025

Are Positive And Negative Leader Humor Two Different Coins? A Meta-Analysis, Xiaohong Xu, Richard Hayes, Lixin Jiang, William P. Jimenez

Psychology Faculty Publications

Scholars disagree on the distinction between positive and negative leader humor, which may hinder the integration and advancement of the leader humor literature. Thus, we meta-analyzed the correlation between positive and negative leader humor, as well as their shared nomological networks (k = 161; follower N = 45,759; leader N = 7,820). Our meta-analysis indicates that (1) there is a very small but significant correlation between positive and negative leader humor (ρ = -.07); (2) positive and negative leader humor have differential relationships with most antecedents (e.g., positive affectivity) and outcomes (e.g., innovation and citizenship behavior); (3) positive affect …

Streaming Media Platforms And Film/Video Arts Distribution, Aras Ozgun, Andreas Treske

Markets, Globalization & Development Review

Streaming media platforms have emerged as new and natively digital forms of content delivery for mainstream news and entertainment media over the past decades. Underlying technologies also unfold new possibilities for the circulation artistic/creative digital video works. Yet, such potential remains relatively underexplored, due to the complexities involved in the public distribution of such works. In this study, we analyze these complexities and critically evaluate emerging models, such as open access streaming media platforms, subscription-based platforms, and cryptocurrency and NFT-based platforms that feature new administrative forms and governance strategies. We finally discuss the possible roles of traditional public cultural institutions …

The Kindle Ecosystem Of Overconsumption: The Digital Flâneuse Roaming Booktok E-Spaces, Valeria Baltodano

Markets, Globalization & Development Review

The development of a community and culture around reading on the social media platform has afforded women new avenues for empowerment through their earning and spending power. A tool wielded often in this mobile space, Amazon’s Kindle device has reached a new height of popularity thanks to the women in the bookish community of TikTok. This paper employs Anne Friedberg’s concept of the flâneuse in relation to the limitation of women’s empowerment through the commodification and aestheticization of reading on TikTok. It demonstrates how the Kindle has become the locus for a culture of overconsumption through which these women exercise …

Multiple Sclerosis Cognitive Scale (Mscs): A Brief Psychometrically Robust Metric Of Patient-Reported Cognitive Difficulty, James F. Sumowski, Joshua Sandry

Department of Psychology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Background:

Existing metrics of patient-reported cognitive difficulties in multiple sclerosis (MS) are lengthy, lack psychometric rigor, and/or fail to query prevalent expressive language deficits.

Objective:

Develop a brief psychometrically robust metric of patient-reported cognitive deficits that includes language items; the Multiple Sclerosis Cognitive Scale (MSCS).

Method:

Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was conducted on 20 Perceived Deficits Questionnaire (PDQ) items plus five newly developed language questions in a large MS sample and matched respondents without neurologic disease. Independent confirmatory principal components analysis (PCA) assessed EFA factor structure. Reliability of the new scale and subscales, and relationships with objective cognitive impairment and …

Frameworks For Measuring Regenerative Tourism: Supply And Demand Indicators With A Dynamic And Holistic Approach, Asif Hussain

Journal of Sustainability and Resilience

This paper examines regenerative tourism as a holistic approach that goes beyond sustainability by actively restoring and enhancing social-ecological systems. Recognizing tourism’s interconnectedness with economic, social, cultural, and environmental systems, it presents regenerative tourism as a dynamic model integrating supply and demand perspectives to promote innovation, resilience, and renewal. On the supply side, regenerative tourism emphasizes ecological restoration, sustainable practices, economic stability with minimal environmental harm, and authentic experiences. On the demand side, it aligns with the rising preference for ethical, participatory, and immersive tourism, involving tourists as active contributors to destination well-being. The paper highlights the importance of multidimensional …

The Human Geography Of Ireland, By James H. Johnson, James R. Mcdonald Feb 2025

The Human Geography Of Ireland, By James H. Johnson, James R. Mcdonald

The Geographical Bulletin

This is undoubtedly the best book on Ireland to appear for some time; it could easily be used as a textbook on the ge - ography of the island. Much of its success stems, oddly enough, from the fact that its author, though of Irish descent, has spent much of his adult life else - where (he teaches at the University of Lancaster, England), thus providing himself with the sort of calm detachment required to understand the often inexplicable turnings of this troubled island. Underlying any comprehension of Ireland (in any century) is its intricate, bitter relationship with Great Britain, …

The Effect Of Meteorological Conditions On Fly Ball Distances In North American Major League Baseball Games, Mark D. Kraft, Brent R. Skeeter Feb 2025

The Effect Of Meteorological Conditions On Fly Ball Distances In North American Major League Baseball Games, Mark D. Kraft, Brent R. Skeeter

The Geographical Bulletin

This study examines the effect of meteorological conditions on the flight of baseballs hit in North American major league baseball games. Statistical analyses are used to relate game-time temperature, humidity, wind speed and wind direction data to the flight distance of every fair fly ball hit in non-domed stadiums during the 1991 and 1992 seasons. Results indicate that temperature is the most important meteorological variable affecting fly ball distances at most stadiums. The effect of wind speed and direction varies in different stadiums, with surprising influences at certain stadiums. The results of this study may be strategically valuable to managers …

The Renaming Of A Tennessee Region, John Morgan, Leonard W. Brinkman Feb 2025

The Renaming Of A Tennessee Region, John Morgan, Leonard W. Brinkman

The Geographical Bulletin

The northeastern section of Tennessee has been known as Upper East Tennessee since the 1840s. During the last few years, however, a new regional label, Northeast Tennessee, has been promoted as a more appropriate regional name. The push for a shift from the use of Upper East Tennessee to Northeast Tennessee has been spearheaded by agencies whose missions are to increase tourism and to attract new industry in the region. The local medianewspapers, radio, and television-have played key roles in the renaming process. Although there is some opposition to the new name, a campaign to designate the region as Northeast …

The Elderly Return-Migration In The United States: Role Of Place Attributes And Individual Characteristics In Destination Choice, Rshood M. Khraif Feb 2025

The Elderly Return-Migration In The United States: Role Of Place Attributes And Individual Characteristics In Destination Choice, Rshood M. Khraif

The Geographical Bulletin

The return migration of the aged is analyzed using a logit model that integrates selected place attributes (i.e., climate, living costs, and health services), distance to the state of birth, and several personal characteristics (i.e., gender, marital status, age, and income). A five-percent Publ ic Use Microdata sample of the 1980 Census of the United States of America is utilized in this paper. Results indicate that a recently retired elderly person is likely to select his/ her place (state) of birth if it has a pleasant climate and low living costs. Also the less wealthy and single people are more …

Place And Cultural Identity Among Guatemalan Indians: "The Fragility Of Goodness", Edward Davis Feb 2025

Place And Cultural Identity Among Guatemalan Indians: "The Fragility Of Goodness", Edward Davis

The Geographical Bulletin

Place experience may be more important to culture groups in war-torn and impoverished countries than to those in stable, developed regions. There is evidence from diverse sources that place experiences are directly relevant to the distinct Indian identities found within Guatemala's western highlands. Individual municipios often are distinct in their clothing, language and attachment to the land. A rereading of ethnographies gathered during the last few decades, along with new survey data, suggest that place and identity are strongly linked, possibly in part as a response to a history of violence and oppression in the region.

Editorial Comments: Why Are You A Geographer?, Yi-Fu Tuan Feb 2025

Editorial Comments: Why Are You A Geographer?, Yi-Fu Tuan

The Geographical Bulletin

Many geographers have been asked this question, and I perhaps more than most because I am a special kind of human geographer, one who has published books with such titles as Dominance and Affection and Passing Strange and Wonderful, which do not sound like those that a geography professor will assign. To the question, then, I have three answers, each suited to a different level of the questioner's sophistication and seriousness. At a party, when people are more interested in not spilling Pepsi on their coat than anything truly intellectual, my reply goes like this. " I traveled a lot …

The Age Of Light: An Overview Of Arab Geography In The Middle Ages, Elizabeth A. Gutierrez Feb 2025

The Age Of Light: An Overview Of Arab Geography In The Middle Ages, Elizabeth A. Gutierrez

The Geographical Bulletin

The Medieval Arab world was a time of curiosity and inquiry, and many contributions to the knowledge of the earth were made during this period. Scientific study was strongly encouraged by many of the caliphate leaders. For this reason, we can call this period the "Age of Light." In contrast, many scientific studies during the " Dark Ages" of Medieval Europe were hindered by the Christian Church. Unfortunately, many Western scholarly accounts of the Middle Ages ignore the writings of Arab geographers. This study highlights the findings and theoretical underpinnings of selected Medieval Arab geographical works. It also discusses why …

Physical Fitness And Wellness In Law Enforcement, Tavion Buchanan

Master of Arts in Criminal Justice Leadership

Long hours, shift work, and general poor nutrition factor into a multitude of reasons why first responders are obese, suffering from mental illnesses, and dying at a faster rate than the general public. First responders also suffer from PTSD, alcoholism, and commit suicide as a direct result of the horrendous things they see and respond to. Administrators should attempt to mitigate these issues by leading from the front when it comes to physical fitness and mental health. Administrators should also give first responders ample opportunity to work on their mental health and physical wellbeing. Law enforcement is one of the …

Emergent Groups And The Informal Digital Emergent Response To Hurricane Florence In The United States, Andrew S. Pyle, Hillary Smith, Ryan P. Fuller

Publications

Our study presents a thematic analysis of 1,582 posts from five digital emergent Facebook groups during Hurricane Florence, affecting North and South Carolina in the United States in 2018. We pose four research questions related to the formation and functioning of digital emergent groups during a disaster. Specifically, we examined how groups contributed to response efforts; messages developed across stages of the disaster; grassroots groups’ organized disaster response; and how proximity affected group functioning. Participants contributed to disaster response by sharing and seeking information and aid. Groups coordinated logistics; offered affirmation; and provided commentary and humor. Group members supported the …
