“But How Do I Start?” A Beginner’S Guide To Your First Qualitative Project, Jason B. Whiting Phd, Bria Nicole Davies

The Qualitative Report

Many new qualitative researchers feel overwhelmed and struggle to find direction in existing books and articles about qualitative methodology. Qualitative methods have a long history that includes different philosophies, practices, and methods, and there are endless ways to interpret and use these tools within these traditions. This article introduces basic qualitative methods with the intent to guide a first-time researcher through a first social science research project, such as a thesis or dissertation. It frames the process as a five-step journey with guidelines to follow and additional resources that can be accessed related to each phase. Although the craft of …

Experiencing The First Year Of Covid-19 Pandemic: Feelings And Thoughts Of Emerging Adults, Miljana Spasić Šnele Phd, Ivana Janković Phd, Jelisaveta Todorović Phd

The Qualitative Report

COVID-19 brought many changes in the daily functioning of many individuals, including emerging adults, due to social distancing, stay-at-home orders, and the closure of public institutions, thus representing a threat to physical and mental health. We investigated how emerging adults felt regarding their experience during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. We were also interested in what they had been thinking about in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic one year after its declaration. To answer these questions, we conducted a qualitative study. The participants included 51 students aged 19 to 28 years old. Conducting thematic analysis six themes related …

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

In 2018, library faculty at a large, public land grant university formed a working group tasked with assessing the information needs of graduate students and implementing action plans to support this user population. From the beginning, the librarians recognized that graduate students are not a homogeneous group. Desiring a more nuanced understanding of these students, they held focus groups in 2019 to explore students’ experiences with navigating graduate school and, more specifically, the University library. One sub-group of particular interest to them was international graduate students, who make up a sizable percentage of the graduate student population on campus. International …

Teaching Information Literacy in a GenAI World:
A 5Cs Framework for Fostering Critical Engagement

This interactive workshop will equip participants with a robust framework for teaching students the knowledge and skills necessary to understand the modern, multifaceted information ecosystems upon which GenAI is built and operates. The 5Cs of news literacy (context, creation, content, circulation, and consumption), as outlined in Tully, Maksl, Ashley, Vraga, and Craft (2021), will be adapted to information literacy more broadly and we will explain how that framework presents an excellent foundation upon which broader information literacy knowledge and skills can be built. As GenAI becomes …

The Establishment Of Turf Farming In Tsukuba City, Japan, Atsushi Onodera, Shizue Kamikihara, Takehiro Morimoto Feb 2025

The Establishment Of Turf Farming In Tsukuba City, Japan, Atsushi Onodera, Shizue Kamikihara, Takehiro Morimoto

The Geographical Bulletin

Formative processes of a turf producing region are examined in Tsukuba City, the leading turf producing area in Japan. Turf production in Tsukuba City is carried out together by turf traders and landscape gardeners. Due to the urbanization of Tsukuba City, almost all farms are now operated part time. Since even elderly farmers can easily produce turf, turf production has become a widely accepted activity. Moreover, a golf course construction boom has lead to a greater demand in turf production and to high prices of turf.

Farm Chemicals As Indicators Of Sediment Sources In Iowa Rivers, Edward N. Nealson, George P. Malanson Feb 2025

Farm Chemicals As Indicators Of Sediment Sources In Iowa Rivers, Edward N. Nealson, George P. Malanson

The Geographical Bulletin

Determination of the source of sediment in rivers and streams is important in order to effectively implement a program to reduce its concentration. This project uses agricultural chemicals as indicators of current sources of sediment from farm fields in the Cedar River, Iowa watershed. We hypothesized that the relations of sediment, nitrogen, and phosphorous yields to precipitation would indicate whether sediment originated from erosion of fields or from channel bank erosion of floodplains. The changes in sediment, nitrate, and phosphorus in the channel in response to rainfall events were determined. In simple regressions, all three variables have similar slopes when …

Carroll County, with its longstanding tradition in agriculture, has had many past experiences with drought. This paper examines drought as it pertains to the farming community in the county. Precipitation statistics for the past 30 years are analyzed in context of the drought occurring in the summer of 1991. Crop loss and the subsequent implementation of federal emergency relief programs by the administering agencies within Carroll County are investigated and an assessment of their overall effectiveness is determined. Various coping strategies and perceptions of drought on an individual level are explored based on a field interview with a Carroll County …

The Urban Surface Of Shanghai Proper, Li Jinan, Tao Kanghua Feb 2025

The Urban Surface Of Shanghai Proper, Li Jinan, Tao Kanghua

The Geographical Bulletin

Based on data from aerial photographs the form, material component, and structure of the urban surface of Shanghai Proper are quantitatively mapped, classified, and analyzed. Relationships between the characteristic of the land cover and urban problems are identified. Urban surfaces include natural features such as open water and culture surfaces such as tile roofs, and concrete surfaces. A quantitative analysis of the land cover reveals the historical development of Shanghai and the emergence of an urban basin with the taller buildings at the perimeter, not in the central city. The study also reveals sections of the city where natural hazards …

Projections And Perceptions-Editoria Comments. Places, Daniel Jacobson

The Geographical Bulletin

I grew up in Newark, New Jersey. I loved its streets and its people. I loved the public schools, the No. 13 trolley that carried passengers down Clinton Avenue to the downtown area, to Bamberger's, Hahnes' and Kresge's, to the Newark Museum and especially the public library. For eighteen or more years I had never been outside of New Jersey or New York, but in the library I found the world. And I could float in my imagination to the Indian sub-continent, to China and Japan, to the great European capitals, to Oceania and beyond. I found a great fascination …

In this project, we created an interdisciplinary Learning Community Project that allowed a Freshman Composition (FC) course to pair with a Digital Media (DM) course (Sophomore students) for students to work on a mini magazine. Students in FC were writers whose tasks focusing on writing and researching, whereas students in DM were copy editors whose tasks focusing on graphic design and layout. The goal was for students …

Teaching The Information Has Value Frame Through The Price Is Right, Kevin J. Reagan, Dawn ("Nikki") Cannon-Rech Feb 2025

Teaching The Information Has Value Frame Through The Price Is Right, Kevin J. Reagan, Dawn ("Nikki") Cannon-Rech

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

When navigating library resources, students often remain unaware of the cost of information, particularly scholarly academic journal articles– and rightly so, given that the mission of the library is to provide patrons with free access to information. Part of the ACRL Framework, nevertheless, entails teaching students about issues with lack of information access, which can be difficult to teach in higher education, where students might have never lacked access to quality information sources. To teach students about the cost of information and the economic factors that prevent some from accessing information, two academic librarians integrated the Information Has Value Frame …

Empowering Learners, Shaping The Future: Cultivating Metaliteracy Across The Curriculum, Vivian Bynoe, Jessica L. Swaringen, Lauren Mcmillan

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

The rapid evolution of the information landscape requires students to be adaptable to a complex information environment. Students are not just information users but also informants and creators who act based on their social identities and social power (Oliphant, 2021). As educators, part of our responsibility involves empowering students to take ownership of the learning process, not only in the classroom but in ways that transfer to their everyday lives. Students who enter the college classroom may or may not be equipped with important 21st century skills such as those identified by the P21 framework for 21st century learning (Soulé, …

The Disinformation Vaccine: A Case For Integrating Comprehensive Disinformation Education Into First Year Writing Classes, Benjamin F. Jackson

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

Students’ exposure to disinformation and misinformation is far greater than it has ever been. As the ability of generative AI to produce image, video, and audio deepfakes grows more sophisticated, disinformation will become even easier to spread and harder to detect. The rapid spread of social, political, scientific, and medical disinformation has been deadly and its potential is disastrous. Security experts now warn that dis/misinformation is the greatest threat to national security. Americans at large and students in particular have a demonstrated lack of information literacy when it comes to detecting false information, and bad actors nationally and globally are …

The Work Of Strangers: A Survey Of International Labour Migration By Peter Stalker., C. Nicholas Raphael Feb 2025

The Work Of Strangers: A Survey Of International Labour Migration By Peter Stalker., C. Nicholas Raphael

The Geographical Bulletin

As recently as the late 1980s, the migration of workers across international boundaries was a relatively minor phenomenon. Today however, the migration of workers across such boundaries as well as intercontinental movement is one of the most striking geographical aspects of the globalization of the world economy. The global landscape has developed some remarkable new economic and political features in recent years. As noted by the author-from Eastern Europe, to the Pacific Rim, to the United States-Mexican border-a reshaping of territories and alliances along with shifts of economic power have been redirecting many international flows of money, goods and most …

Improving Rail Resources: The Detroit-Chicago Rail Corridor Upgrade, A. Stroup Feb 2025

Improving Rail Resources: The Detroit-Chicago Rail Corridor Upgrade, A. Stroup

The Geographical Bulletin

The Detroit-Chicago Rail Corridor was awarded federal high-speed rail designation in October, 1992. This designation was the end result of a 22-year Amtrak/State of Michigan partnership created to improve the corridor's infrastructure and performance. Portions of the corridor are now able to support train speeds of up to 110 mph due to improvements to trackage and safety devices, and the elimination of some grade crossings. Facility improvements along with the infrastructure improvements have been responsible for the nearly 170 percent increase in annual corridor ridership since 1970. The continued commitment of numerous agencies has ensured that the Detroit-Chicago Corridor is …

News From The Chapters 1994-1995, C. Nicholas Raphael

The Geographical Bulletin

Alpha Chapter did an excellent job promoting geography this year. With 27 active members this was easy to do. We had several big projects that we took on. One was the restoration of the ISU Nature Trail which has been defunct for 10 years. The members enjoyed this outdoor project, picking up trash, old furniture and clearing the path. This project will continue to be on-going. We hope to write a selfguided tour book, create lesson plans for the local school teachers and add picnic tables and rebuild markers and signs. Our second project was to contact a local school …

The Catch Effort Of Spiny Lobster (Panulirus Argus) On South Caicos, British West Indies, Edward J. Burge Jr Feb 2025

The Catch Effort Of Spiny Lobster (Panulirus Argus) On South Caicos, British West Indies, Edward J. Burge Jr

The Geographical Bulletin

The spiny lobster, Panulirus argus, which inhabits bank around South Caicos, Turks and Caicos Islands, is the most economically important crustacean in the Caribbean region. In recent years concern regarding overfishing has become prominent. In this study 46 boat loads of specimens, with catches derived from 11 fishing sites were surveyed for data sets including size, sex, and amount from each site. The catch-per-unit effort calculated for each site revealed that individual diving ability and ease of harvest were the greatest determinants for choice of fishing site. Environmental conditions of spiny lobster habitats; such as, water depth and direction of …

Temporal And Spatial Changes In Beaver Pond Locations, Eastern Glacier National Park, Montana, U.S.A., Ross K. Meentemeyer, David R. Butler

The Geographical Bulletin

Sequential aerial photographs from 1966, 1973, 1984, and 1991 were used to map the number and distribution of beaver ponds in a portion of eastern Glacier National Park, Montana. The most stable ponds were located on deltaic environments. Ponds located on intermittent streams were somewhat less stable. A general equilibrium of pond number and site location exists in the study area throughoutthe 25-year period. This result contrasts with those from historical studies in eastern and central North America, where beaver populations at the turn of the century had probably been much lower than in Glacier National Park.

Tuan's Topophilia: The Making Of A Citation Classic, Dean Sinclair Feb 2025

Tuan's Topophilia: The Making Of A Citation Classic, Dean Sinclair

The Geographical Bulletin

First published in 1974, Yi-Fu Tuan's work Topophilia has become one of the most cited works in human geography. Using the method of citation analysis and data from the Citation Indexes, this paper explores the frequency of Topophilia's inclusion as a reference in scholarly literature. A temporal trend is identified, which indicates that citation to Topophilia rose in the late 1970s, dropped in the early 1980s, but rose again in the late 1980s. Within journals, the references to Topophilia by geographers has declined since the 1980s while citations in literature in the humanities has increased since the late 1980s. A …

Projections And Perceptions Editorial Comments: Learning For The New World Of Work Through Geographic Inquiry, A. David Hill

The Geographical Bulletin

As students of geography, you should know that many of the competencies you will need for the world of work can be learned with geography instruction that is issues-based and inquiry-oriented. With this kind of teaching and learning, you see that what goes on in your classes is directly linked to what goes on in the real world. This learning can help you appreciate what John Dewey, the great American philosopher, believed: Education is not merely preparation for life but life itself. Indeed, it is crucial that you believe that learning is one of your most important responsibilities, and that …

Modeling Area Deprivation Index Using Non-Gaussian Fixed Rank Kriging, Edwin Kutsushi Mutimba

SDSU Data Science Symposium

The Area Deprivation Index (ADI) plays a vital role in identifying and addressing socioeconomic challenges, forming the basis for fair public health policies and resource distribution. This study explores the capabilities of both linear and non-linear statistical models, with a focus on Fixed Rank Kriging (FRK), to analyze ADI using data on U.S. Social Determinants of Health (SDOH). The model’s predictive capability is compared with Generalized Additive Models (GAM) and Generalized Additive Models for Location, Scale, and Shape (GAMLSS). The non-gaussian FRK provides a more comprehensive spatial analysis, albeit with higher computational requirements.
