Mental Health Seeking Perspectives Of Filipino Immigrants In California, Jonathan Patam Won
Mental Health Seeking Perspectives Of Filipino Immigrants In California, Jonathan Patam Won
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Filipino immigrants have low access to mental healthcare in their native country and a high rate of mental health disorders. The problem that was investigated in this concurrent triangulation mixed-methods study was a lack of understanding regarding how Filipino immigrants to California perceive mental health services. Acculturation theory was used to understand the lived experiences of eight Californian Filipino immigrants who had sought mental health services and seven who had not. All participants had lived in California for at least 10 years. Semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis were employed for the qualitative component. An acculturation questionnaire was used to gather …

STEM for Success Resources
This study examines the ethical implications of AI in role-playing games (RPGs), focusing on meta-participation, transparency, and algorithmic influence. By exploring AI’s role in shaping narratives and player agency, we analyze ethical concerns such as informed consent, algorithmic control, and cultural inclusivity. Through a systematic literature review and real-world case studies, the research proposes principles for integrating AI ethically into RPGs while preserving their immersive and collaborative essence. This work challenges existing paradigms and invites critical discourse on AI's evolving role in game design.
Double Standards In Un Political Bodies: Is Impartiality Possible?, Steven Ratner
Double Standards In Un Political Bodies: Is Impartiality Possible?, Steven Ratner
Other Publications
The decisions of the UN’s political bodies would seem to represent the epitome of claims of double standards in the enforcement of international law. For even if we can accept that the members of the Security Council or the Human Rights Council (HRC) will choose to bring some situations to the attention of those bodies while leaving others off the agenda, or to pass some resolutions and reject others, such decisions seem quite suspect if we view those organizations as not merely making policy but enforcing international law. International lawyers have long identified this dilemma over enforcement: is it better …
A Collaborative Approach To Workplace Violence Prevention In Healthcare, Mark T. Daigle
A Collaborative Approach To Workplace Violence Prevention In Healthcare, Mark T. Daigle
Master of Arts in Criminal Justice Leadership
Workplace violence is an issue that while not unique to a healthcare setting, is certainly more prevalent. Even more disturbing is that many instances of workplace violence go unreported. Identifying and implementing evidenced based approaches that seek to ensure the safety and well-being of healthcare workers and patients is no small task. Healthcare organizations are faced with the dilemma of protecting and advocating for the safety of their staff against acts of workplace violence, while also providing necessary care for patients who may be violent or disruptive. Properly managing these behaviors requires a thoughtful and thorough approach that recognizes the …

From Private To Public: Narratives Of Gender-Based Violence Among The Everyday Voices Of The #Metoo Movement, Anna Gjika Phd, Megan Stubbs-Richardson Phd, Mackenzie Paul
SSRC Publications
In 2017, the #MeToo movement garnered international attention when millions of people used the hashtag to share personal experiences of sexual violence. The present study examines how non-celebrity users discussed their experiences of sexual victimization through a qualitative and quantitative content analysis of a random sample of #MeToo tweets (N=1,427). We found that survivors prioritized details about the “who,” “what,” “where,” “when,” “why,” and “how” of trauma in their disclosures (Bogen et al., 2021). Key themes in their responses included child sexual abuse (22.7%), long-term adverse effects (17.6%), and polyvictimization (10.4%) across the life course. Survivors also utilized #MeToo to …

Nature-Based Education As A Learning Tool: Unleashing The Power Of Nature-Based Education In Egyptian Primary Schools. "The Effects Of Outdoor Learning And Open-Air Classrooms On Primary School Students In Egypt.", Nermeen Bekhiet
Theses and Dissertations
When learning modalities are tailored to each student's preferences and needs, academic success follows. This effect is contingent upon both individual and surrounding factors. Many schools in Egypt and the Middle East do not concentrate on how exposure to nature and nature-based learning can affect how the learner perceives his or her learning area. Most schools in Egypt have no exposure to nature to allow students to explore the world in their way; there is no room for diverse students to excel. Therefore, this exploratory research aims to reestablish a connection between private primary school students and the natural world …

In ambiguous and challenging environments, our connection to each other can help us produce new ideas, engage in creative action, and facilitate innovation. In this session, we will explore the idea of social creativity, its link to dialogue, and how these principles can be applied in our teams at work, school, and home. We will also learn how leaders can play a crucial role in fostering creativity within their teams and communities, even when faced with the unknown.

Liberating The Whole Self Through Leadership, Abby Morioka, Stefanie Marlow, Nick Peralta
Payne Center for Leadership Development Student Leadership Conference
Breakout Session #1Liberation is the freedom from limits, thoughts, and/or behaviors that would keep us stuck or imprisoned. The work of leadership is the act of looking to the needs of others that you lead by fighting for their good and well-being. The starting point of this leadership style focuses on freeing ourselves from thoughts, limits, and/or behaviors that keep us stuck. Liberating leadership is the act of bridging a gap between personal change and systematic change through authentically showing up powerfully and consistently for yourself and others.

Compromised Communication: The Threat Of Disinformation To Rational Bargaining, Marydalia Jimenez
Compromised Communication: The Threat Of Disinformation To Rational Bargaining, Marydalia Jimenez
Binghamton University Undergraduate Journal
This paper integrates theories of disinformation with the “Bargaining Model,” a theory in political science that explains why actors choose to go to war even though they might achieve their aims more efficiently through bargaining. As a case study, the paper takes a disinformation campaign during the Cold War and Russia’s war in Ukraine (2014-present) to provide evidence for the way that disinformation undermines international dialogue and bases the status quo in unreal conditions, thereby making the bargaining process irrational and diminishing the opportunity for resolution.
The Systemic Side Of Disinformation: The Reid Technique As Exploitative Knowledge Production, Jayden L. Perez
The Systemic Side Of Disinformation: The Reid Technique As Exploitative Knowledge Production, Jayden L. Perez
Binghamton University Undergraduate Journal
In this paper, the author analyzes the Reid Technique – the most commonly employed interrogation technique in the United States – to argue that it employs disinformation to reinforce the power and authority of the police while disregarding the harm caused to the individual suspect. Furthermore, the author shows how the Reid Technique reproduces the structural, systemic side of disinformation when false confessions lead to wrongful convictions that codify disinformation as legal precedent. In turn, these wrongful convictions are interpreted as high-quality data that gets incorporated into the fabric of what scholars and members of our society know about crime …

Juvenile Justice And Delinquency – Reforming A Broken System, Brandie Olson
Juvenile Justice And Delinquency – Reforming A Broken System, Brandie Olson
Master of Arts in Criminal Justice Leadership
The juvenile justice system faces significant controversies, primarily concerning accountability and the treatment of young offenders. With rising juvenile crime rates, especially in urban areas like Hennepin County, there is an urgent need for reform. How does the system balance the urgency to hold young offenders accountable while providing the necessary support to foster their rehabilitation? Together, we must explore these challenges to pave the way for a more even-handed and effective juvenile justice system that prioritizes the future of our youth. As legal frameworks intersect with adolescent growth, three key ethical domains emerge: ensuring developmental appropriateness, upholding fair treatment, …

Master of Arts in Criminal Justice Leadership
A career in Law Enforcement allows people to build partnerships with community members to work towards a common goal of enhancing public safety through collaboration and trust. It's a rewarding yet often challenging career because officers must make split-second decisions in high-stress situations while working long hours and missing family events. Over time, police officers experience stressors from their jobs and personal lives that become overwhelming and difficult to navigate due to the unforeseen challenges of their chosen career in law enforcement. These challenges make it crucial for officers to find approaches that enable them to overcome these challenges that …

Ethical considerations of these programs are considered, and an action plan is described to …
Exploring Faculty And Academic Advisors’ Experiences Supporting College Students With Mental Health Challenges: A Qualitative Study Using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, Shantalea Johns
Social Work Faculty Publications
This interpretive phenomenological study explores faculty and academic advisors’ experiences in supporting students with mental health challenges. Guided by the Theory of Planned Behavior, which suggests that personal beliefs, prior experiences, and familiarity with symptoms influence behavior, the study examines participant narratives to identify key factors that shape their approaches to supporting students. Findings indicate that personal beliefs about mental health, prior experiences with individuals facing mental health challenges, and campus-based mental health training opportunities all significantly enhance mental health support mechanisms for students outside traditional counseling settings. The ability of faculty and academic advisors to recognize signs of mental …
A Randomized Controlled Study Of Heart Rate Variability Biofeedback In An Older Adult Sample, Whitney D. Allen
A Randomized Controlled Study Of Heart Rate Variability Biofeedback In An Older Adult Sample, Whitney D. Allen
Theses and Dissertations
Heart rate variability biofeedback (HRVB) is a controlled breathing treatment designed to increase the variation in consecutive heartbeats leading to improved regulation of one's autonomic nervous system thereby improving one's ability to self-regulate and maintain homeostasis. Changes in heart rate variability (HRV) are seen in those of increased age and lower HRV is associated with poorer outcomes (e.g., increased mortality, worse emotional functioning, cardiovascular risk factors). As such, older adults are a group that stands to benefit from HRVB principles. The current randomized control trial was designed to understand the impact of HRVB in an older adult population on resting …
Preventing Carbon Emissions With Imaging-Based Civil Infrastructure Assessment And Evaluation, Thomas Schumacher
Preventing Carbon Emissions With Imaging-Based Civil Infrastructure Assessment And Evaluation, Thomas Schumacher
PSU Transportation Seminars
For concrete bridges without existing plans, simplified and highly conservative load rating (structural evaluation) methods may be used, which can lead to unnecessary load restrictions, unjustifiable strengthening, or in the worst case, preventable replacements. Avoiding these outcomes not only saves money but it prevents carbon emissions from longer travel and construction activities and resources associated with replacement.
This presentation discusses a case study of a prestressed concrete bridge that required a load rating, and for which no plans existed. Imaging and image fusion using radar and ultrasonic measurements taken from the top and bottom of the slab were performed to …

Culturally Considerate Trauma-Focused Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Treatment In Latine/X Populations: A Scoping Review, Alejandra Kukuli Delgado, Ryan Holliday, Shira Maguen, Nicholas Holder
Psychology Student Research
Background/Objectives: While theoretical articles describing cultural considerations for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) treatment in Latine/x populations exist, empirical trials are less common. The present study aimed to review the existing literature for empirically tested, trauma-focused PTSD treatments among Latine/x samples to describe treatment outcomes, cultural considerations, and gaps in the existing literature. Methods: For this scoping review, we identified studies that met inclusion criteria as culturally considerate, trauma-focused PTSD treatments reporting symptom outcomes in Latine/x adults. We searched databases (n = 7) and collected 2176 unique records. Six reports met inclusion criteria. Studies enrolled 176 participants into five …

Mentoring And Change Management: Integrating Organizational Mentorship With Change Initiatives, Ramiro Pesina, Danny Darden, David Silberman
Student Posters
Change is an inevitable and defining force in organizations. While structured change management frameworks provide critical guidance, they often overlook the human dimensions of change. We investigate mentoring and argue that it should not merely support change initiatives but serve as a strategic driver of successful transformations, serving as a multidimensional driver of cognitive alignment, emotional support, and behavioral adaptation, and introduce a mentoring framework that addresses these areas while bridging the gap between the procedural and human-centric change elements.
By interviewing participants who have been involved in mentoring programs yet experienced significant organizational change, we will identify their support …
