Multidimensional Monotonicity And Economic Applications, Frank Yang, Kai Hao Yang
Multidimensional Monotonicity And Economic Applications, Frank Yang, Kai Hao Yang
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
We characterize the extreme points of multidimensional monotone functions from [0,1]^n to [0,1], as well as the extreme points of the set of one-dimensional marginals of these functions. These characterizations lead to new results in various mechanism design and information design problems, including public good provision with interdependent values; interim efficient bilateral trade mechanisms; asymmetric reduced form auctions; and optimal private private information structure. As another application, we also present a mechanism anti-equivalence theorem for two-agent, two-alternative social choice problems: A mechanism is payoff-equivalent to a deterministic DIC mechanism if and only if they are ex-post equivalent.

As one of the most established theoretical approaches to public policy, the Advocacy Coalition Framework (ACF) has moored most of its theoretical arguments around a textbook policy conflict consisting of two or more advocacy coalitions in a mature adversarial policy subsystem within an advanced polyarchy. This article steps beyond the textbook by introducing deep core coalitions marked by compounding intersectional identities operating at the macro-system. It offers two illustrations of deep core coalitions, one bound by their collective transgender identity and the other by their collective traditionalist identity. Finally, this article concludes with a discussion of what it means for …

Centering Black Resource-Poor Adolescent Voices: A Critical Phenomenological Study Of Lived Mental Health Struggles While Enduring The Covid-19 Pandemic, Paulette Dispagna
Counseling and Psychology Dissertations
There is a dearth of research in general and qualitative research specifically about the mental health experience of resource-poor Black adolescents living in Boston. This has implications for the field in terms of how adolescents experiencing mental health issues can be supported and how professionals can create more useful mental health treatment. Drawing from the theoretical lens of critical race theory and more specifically, intersectionality, this hermeneutic phenomenological inquiry examined the ways in which experiencing multiple levels of inequality, especially from racism and poverty, affected a Black adolescent’s mental health. Eleven adolescents were interviewed via Zoom. Six major findings included: …

Macroeconomic Modelling Towards Achieving Sustainable Development Goal-13 In India, Aqib Mujtaba Dr., Pravakar Sahoo Dr., Pabitra Kumar Jena Dr.
Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking
This study develops a macroeconomic model to examine the relationships between the energy sector, economic growth and the environment in India over the period 1971 to 2021. Aligning with the United Nations SDG-13 and using the Seemingly Unrelated Regression Equation (SURE) model, we find that the services and agriculture sectors, non-renewable energy consumption, government expenditure, money supply, carbon dioxide emissions per capita, inflation, and population are crucial factors. The services sector and government spending notably impact economic growth and environmental degradation due to increased energy demand and emissions.

The Double-Edge Sword: Does Fdi Exacerbate Inefficiency Traps? Evidence Of Indonesian Manufacturing Firms, Mohammad Zeqi Yasin, Miguel Angel Esquivias, Fichrie Fachrowi Adli
Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking
Employing a firm-level panel dataset from Statistik Industri for 2008-2015, this study investigates the effect of incoming Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) on inefficiency traps in Indonesia. Firms often face transient and persistent inefficiencies in production and resource utilization, impeding optimal efficiency and productivity. Stochastic Frontier Analysis and Tobit estimates quantify the positive impact of FDI spillovers on inefficiency traps, with FDI spillovers reducing both inefficiencies, particularly transient inefficiencies. Foreign investment externalities diminish inefficiencies through spatial and sectoral spillovers, with spatial spillovers exerting a larger influence. Improved human capital and increased access to foreign inputs also contribute to the mitigation of …
Sweet Lies: Influence Of Food Marketing On Childrens’ Health And The Need For Reform, Mollie M. Warrington
Sweet Lies: Influence Of Food Marketing On Childrens’ Health And The Need For Reform, Mollie M. Warrington
Honors Theses
Markedly, there is heavy marketing of unhealthy food to children. This has become a significant public health concern because of escalating rates of child obesity, which have long-term consequences for physical health and severe mental health repercussions, such as body image concerns and low self-esteem. This thesis explores how food marketing strategies, historically rooted in television ads and evolving through digital platforms, are linked to children's dietary choices and broader public health implications. It analyzes various manipulative tactics, such as digital advertising, influencer endorsement, and gamification, showing how companies take advantage of the cognitive vulnerabilities of children to propagate unhealthy …

Inhibition Of Il-6 Trans-Signaling Promotes Post-Stroke Functional Recovery In A Sex And Dose-Dependent Manner, Cassandra Hall, Dustin T Nguyen, Kate Mendoza, Chunfeng Tan, Anjali Chauhan
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Introduction: Elevated circulating IL-6 levels are associated with poorer outcomes after stroke, and increased serum IL-6 levels are linked to a higher risk of stroke. IL-6 binds to soluble IL-6 receptors (sIL-6R) and subsequently to ubiquitously expressed gp130, initiating proinflammatory trans-signaling. This study tested the hypothesis that inhibiting IL-6 trans-signaling by administering soluble (s) gp130 improves long-term functional outcomes in young mice after stroke.
Methods: Recombinant mouse gp130Fc chimera (sgp130) was administered one hour after middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) followed by twice-weekly administration for 2 weeks in mice (8-15 weeks old). Behavioral assessments were done on days 7 and …

How do Digital Technologies (DT) affect the quality of governance and institutions in ASEAN? We address this question through employing a panel data technique on 10 ASEAN countries over the period between 1996 and 2022. The findings reveal that DT are influential in the quality of governance and institutions in these countries. Specifically, fixed broadband subscriptions, individuals using the internet, and mobile cellular subscriptions are vital in promoting good governance and quality institutions in ASEAN. Moreover, government effectiveness and rule of law responded and improved more significantly with the development of DT. It was concluded that effective government policy and …

Parental Support Experiences During The Covid-19 Pandemic While Supervising 9th – 12th Grade Student Learning, Sarah E. White
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The COVID-19 pandemic impacted the lives of parents, children, and families in numerous ways. These impacts included increased parental involvement in remote learning. This was an ongoing situation where parents were supervising and being highly involved in their student’s education. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore the parental support experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic while supervising high school student learning. Bronfenbrenner’s bioecological theory was used as a theoretical foundation to understand the experiences of parents. This theory related to support systems, which was relevant during COVID-19 when remote learning changed the interactions between in-person students and …

Glacio-Dynamic Variations In Central New York Drumlins: A Morphometric Analysis, Mark Francek, Roger Blish
Glacio-Dynamic Variations In Central New York Drumlins: A Morphometric Analysis, Mark Francek, Roger Blish
The Geographical Bulletin
Varying rates of till deformation as a function of surface topography and direction of continental ice advance are linked to pattern and form variations in drumlins. Five transects are examined morphometrically . Transects are selected on the basis of their slope and direction of ice advance. A hypothesis based on variable rates of clast lodgement and till deformation accounts for most of drumlins' spatial characteristics. The Cayuga Trough funnelled most of the ice southward and the large amounts of till mobilized contribute to high drumlin densities. The observed increase in drumlin elongation is linked to local ice surging. Away from …

The Creation Of A Digital Cartographic Data Base For Locator Maps, Karen R. Mulcahy
The Geographical Bulletin
This paper reports on the procedures and problems associated with the development of a digital cartographic data base for the creation of small scale, small size locator maps. These locator maps are used as inserts to accompany thematic and planimetric maps. They are generally very simple outlines of coastlines or political boundaries, but may also contain boxed or shaded areas, graticules, and occasionally, thematic content. Several cartographic data sets were evaluated and three were chosen for use to cover a map scale range of 1 :800 million to 1: 30 million. The data sets were then reviewed and edited. Finally, …
Support For The United States In The United Nations On Cold War Issues And The Distribution Of Foreign Aid To Central American And Caribbean Countries, Gerald R. Webster
Support For The United States In The United Nations On Cold War Issues And The Distribution Of Foreign Aid To Central American And Caribbean Countries, Gerald R. Webster
The Geographical Bulletin
The agenda of the General Assembly of the United Nations has been dominated by Cold War battles between the United States and the Soviet Union during much of the organization's 45-year history. Do countries who support the United States on votes associated with the Cold War receive larger quantities of U.S. foreign assistance? This paper examines two hypotheses pertaining to this question with regard to the voting behavior of 12 Central American and Caribbean countries between 1970 and 1987. The cross-sectional analysis finds significant evidence for a link between U.N. voting behavior and the quantities of per capita U.S. foreign …
The Use Of Dendrogeomorphic Techniques To Date A Beaverdam Outburst Flood In Oglethorpe County, Georgia, Katherine A. Schipke, David R. Butler
The Use Of Dendrogeomorphic Techniques To Date A Beaverdam Outburst Flood In Oglethorpe County, Georgia, Katherine A. Schipke, David R. Butler
The Geographical Bulletin
An outburst flood from a failed beaver dam occurred in September, 1987, in Oglethorpe County, Georgia. The flood event tilted, scarred, and traumatized trees along the banks of Millstone Creek. Dendrogeomorphological techniques were employed to verify that the flood event was recorded in the annual rings of these trees, and to produce an index cutoff value for ring responses. Because of its recency, a very high number of sampled tree-rings recorded the flood; however, older floods are less likely to be so strongly recorded in the sampled trees, diminishing the usefulness of the index value concept. An alternative approach used …

The field of Geography has experienced much change during my professional career, which I date from my arrival to teach at the University of Arkansas in September, 1946 (I retired in May, 1990). My geographical education was under seasoned, mature geographers who had taught several years and were themselves the product of early 20th century geographers. I chose the field because I liked the subject, not be - cause of job opportunities, and because of the perspect

Hydrogeological Sensitivity Of Transportation Routes In Hazardous Waste Disposal Facilities Siting, David A. Padgett
Hydrogeological Sensitivity Of Transportation Routes In Hazardous Waste Disposal Facilities Siting, David A. Padgett
The Geographical Bulletin
An analysis of federal rules for siting hazardous waste treatment, storage, and disposal facilities (TSDFs) reveals that minimal consideration is directed towards the potential for groundwater pollution during transport. Hazardous substances are being introduced to groundwater annually from spills during shipping. Federal regulations do include stringent aquifer protection measures for the immediate facilities' sites; however, little attention has been paid to the hydrogeological sensitivity of the highway and railway corridors. This project raises the policy question of possibly including the hydrogeological sensitivity of transport routes as decision-making criteria for location of proposed TSDFs. An examination of current regulations and a …

The Centennial Farm Program In Michigan, Susan Tosick Storwick, Robert M. Ward, Linda Young
The Geographical Bulletin
Some 4,500 centennial farms were documented in Michigan at the end of the 1980 decade. Qualifications for centennial farm status are somewhat subjectively interpreted. However, the most important criterion is based on families and descendants occupying farms for 100 years or more. Some farms are being decertified when the continuous ownership is broken by sale of the property. The necessity to sell is attributed in part to declining farm revenue, aging farmers who lack heirs and urban land pressure. Before termination from the program, some farmers have sold small parcels of their land, hired fa rm labor, or switched to …

The Abandoned Shipwreck Act Of 1987 And The Reaction Of State Historic Preservation Offices, Kelly A. Victor, Gary M. Victor
The Geographical Bulletin
The Abandoned Shipwreck Act of 1987 is perhaps the most important piece of recent federal legislation enacted affecting underwater archaeology and the preservation of underwater historic sites. With this short statute, the federal government vested title to virtually all historic shipwrecks in navigable water to the states. The act also changed existing legal principles in order to allow the states to enact their own laws to protect and preserve underwater historic resources. This article begins with a discussion of the Abandoned Shipreck Act of 1987- what it is, what it does and how it has changed the law related to …
