Understanding The Relationship Between Executive Function And Language During The Preschool Period, Haya Q. Kidwai
Understanding The Relationship Between Executive Function And Language During The Preschool Period, Haya Q. Kidwai
Senior Theses
Executive functions (EFs) are abilities that help us to control our actions, pay attention, and go against automatic responses. EF skills include working memory, inhibition, and cognitive flexibility, all of which develop rapidly during early childhood alongside other developmental abilities like language. In fact, previous research has found a relationship between EFs and language abilities. Therefore, the current study investigated the correlation between EFs and language in the preschool period, a pivotal moment in their development. Specifically, the current study examined the relationship between working memory and inhibition and expressive vocabulary and morphosyntax measures in 7 children 4-6 years old. …
Suspended Agency And The Habitus Of Waiting In A Migrant Shelter In Tijuana, Liam K. Ogden Iii
Suspended Agency And The Habitus Of Waiting In A Migrant Shelter In Tijuana, Liam K. Ogden Iii
Senior Theses
This thesis explores idea of suspended agency and the development of a habitus of waiting within a women and children’s migrant shelter in Tijuana, Mexico. Relying on ten days of participant observation and an interview with a shelter director, I examine the lived experiences of residents, workers, and myself as a researcher navigating humanitarian space. Shelters are designed to be short term spaces, but migrants are often forced into long-term, uncertain stays due to restrictive border policies and structural barriers, resulting in a social stasis defined by boredom, anxiety, and monotony within the shelter. Drawing on Bourdieu’s concept of habitus …
Stop Looking Away: On The Zone Of Interest And Palestine, Trevor J. Matteson
Stop Looking Away: On The Zone Of Interest And Palestine, Trevor J. Matteson
Augustana Center for the Study of Ethics Essay Contest
Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest is a radical interrogation of complicity, silence, and the carefully curated distance that enables atrocity to unfold in full view. Through a cinematic language defined by absence - of violence, of sentimentality, of conventional storytelling - Glazer collapses the walls between the viewer and the horror we are trained to ignore. The film’s haunting sound design, unflinching cinematography, and alienating formal strategies construct a domestic world nestled against a genocide, daring us to recognize our own proximity to suffering. By situating the Hoss family’s banal cruelty alongside the ongoing genocide in Gaza, the essay …
Information Literacy: How Students Search For & Verfiy Health-Related Information On Social Media, Isabel Sousa
Information Literacy: How Students Search For & Verfiy Health-Related Information On Social Media, Isabel Sousa
Honors Projects in Communication and Language Studies
Today, younger generations utilize social media to access what they perceive to be reliable and accurate information, yet there are some concerns regarding validity and the ease of which students share information. This thesis evaluates how undergraduate students search for and verify information seen on popular social media platforms and analyzes the proficiency of their information literacy skills. The data collected will be used in determining which social media platforms are most frequently used and trusted by students, which types of sources are used in verification of this information if verified at all, and their perception of information literacy. The …

Smart Strategies: The Impact Of Social Media And Ai In Modern Marketing, Waverly O. Smith
Student Publications
In recent times, social media and artificial intelligence (AI) have become increasingly popular in the world of marketing. With these technologies, companies can more efficiently and effectively find consumers and create tailored product advertisements. AI has helped companies segment consumers, identify trends, and predict consumer needs. Social media has created a platform in which companies can connect with consumers and gain direct feedback. Additionally, it has created a space in which anyone can become an influencer or market a product. With the evolution of technology and digital marketing, it has also become increasingly important for companies to use high quality …

Women’s sports are on the rise, as indicated by increased media interest and television viewership records across the professional and collegiate ranks. This trend coincides with one specific to the sports media industry, where more women are pursuing careers in that space – and being recognized for their contributions in ways they have not in previous decades.
My project examines both trends in the form of a podcast, featuring interviews with eight alumni and two current students who have sports media experience and ties to the University of South Carolina’s School of Journalism and Mass Communications. The podcast consists of …

Investigating Child-Informed Considerations For Animated Picture Symbols Representing Emotion For Aac Use In Children With Asd, Hannah Kitsmiller
Investigating Child-Informed Considerations For Animated Picture Symbols Representing Emotion For Aac Use In Children With Asd, Hannah Kitsmiller
College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Development of emotional competence is an important area of consideration when supporting individuals who use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). Emotional competence includes skills related to identifying and communicating about one’s emotions. Individuals who use AAC may struggle to develop strong skills in emotional competence. One potential barrier to developing emotional competence may be access to symbols that facilitate understanding of the represented emotion. Emotions are abstract and challenging to represent in visual symbols. Additionally, evidence suggests individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) may have visual perceptual differences when viewing faces. Current emotion symbols are often depicted using isolated facial …
Controlling The Narrative: How The United Daughters Of The Confederacy Shaped Collective Memory Through Romance Novels, Karie L. Cobb
Controlling The Narrative: How The United Daughters Of The Confederacy Shaped Collective Memory Through Romance Novels, Karie L. Cobb
Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
While existing scholarship on the United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC) reveals the immense influence the organization wielded in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, I assert that their legacy has had a broader and more insidious reach than previously believed. Through close analysis of two foundational romance novelists’ works published during the rapid escalation of the genre’s popularity, I contend that the rhetoric of the UDC shaped generations of Southerners as demonstrated through repetitions and parallels of the Lost Cause ideology found in UDC publications and sponsored materials within romance novels written by white Southern women who came of age …
Transgender And Gender Diverse Young Adults’ Navigation Of Sexuality: What Mental Health Providers Need To Know, Sage A. Volk
Transgender And Gender Diverse Young Adults’ Navigation Of Sexuality: What Mental Health Providers Need To Know, Sage A. Volk
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
Though literature has documented that TGD individuals may face unique challenges when attempting to develop healthy romantic and sexual relationships (Hill-Meyer & Scarborough, 2014), research has also identified that intimate partners can serve as an immeasurable source of support and resilience for their TGD partners (Coppola et al., 2021; Galupo et al., 2019). While there is strong evidence to support the importance of TGD individuals developing healthy intimate relationships, there is little guidance in the literature for mental health providers wanting to discuss these domains with TGD clients in psychotherapy (Spencer and Vencill, 2017).
The present study addresses this gap …
Transgender And Gender Diverse Youth Navigating Relationships And Sexuality: Recommendations For Affirming Clinical Practice, Hannah Marie Coffey
Transgender And Gender Diverse Youth Navigating Relationships And Sexuality: Recommendations For Affirming Clinical Practice, Hannah Marie Coffey
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
Healthy relationship development is critical for adolescents’ social-emotional wellbeing, and shifting social expectations and identity development in adolescence can be challenging (Kenny et al., 2013; Roach, 2018). This can be particularly complex for transgender and gender diverse (TGD) youth given the occurrence of identity development alongside navigating safety, access to affirming spaces, and limited availability of queer-inclusive education (Levitt and Ippolito, 2014; Xing et al., 2015). The positive psychosocial impacts of comprehensive sex education and the relevance of discussing relationships in therapy with adolescents situate mental health providers well to address some of the gaps in knowledge and access to …
Holding Ground In The Cerulean Tide: Minority Party Legislators' Strategies For Advancing Climate Policies In Landslide States, Sukjae Lee
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
This dissertation addresses a key puzzle: Why do states sometimes adopt nationally polarized policies, such as climate change legislation, even when doing so does not align with strict partisan interests? The analysis focuses on “landslide states,” where a single party overwhelmingly dominates, and the minority party cannot realistically expect to gain a majority. In these environments, reduced partisan conflict allows minority party legislators to break from traditional partisan paths. As a result, I argue that electoral motivations drive them to signal moderation by advancing liberal policy agendas or incorporating provisions that minimize backlash from their core constituents in landslide states. …
How Do School-Level Dynamics Impact Mainstreaming Practices In American Schools?, Natalie M. Watson
How Do School-Level Dynamics Impact Mainstreaming Practices In American Schools?, Natalie M. Watson
Department of Sociology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
How do school-level dynamics impact the everyday experiences of students with disabilities, compared to their abled peers? Extant research has mostly focused on the experiences of individual students with disabilities, and their teachers. We know far less about how school-level dynamics shape students’ experiences. Historically, American schools formally separated students with and without disabilities, though the specific mode varied over time -- ranging from explicit institutionalization to segregation in special education programs. At least since the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act in 1990, efforts to educate students with disabilities alongside their abled peers in mainstreamed settings have increased …
Everyday Storytelling: The Function, Meaning, And Impact Of College Student's Storytelling And Storylistening, Sophie K. Richards
Everyday Storytelling: The Function, Meaning, And Impact Of College Student's Storytelling And Storylistening, Sophie K. Richards
Department of Communication Studies: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The current study investigated the stories that 102 college students heard and told through the course of a 1-day diary study with surveys administered at four timepoints. Investigated through the perspective of the small story framework (Bamberg & Georgakopoulou, 2008), everyday talk (Goldsmith & Baxter, 1996) and Communicated Narrative Sense-Making (CNSM) theory (Koenig Kellas, 2022), participants reported about the stories that they heard and told throughout their day, as well as completed self-report measures of well-being. The study aimed to understand the characteristics of everyday stories, the functions they serve, the meanings they hold, and their impact on well-being. Participants …

Giving Voice To Student Grief: Using Community-Based Participatory Research To Develop And Pilot A Translational Storytelling Intervention For Bereaved College Students, Cassidy Rae Taladay-Carter
Department of Communication Studies: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The purpose of this dissertation was to employ community-based participatory research (CBPR, Wallerstein et al., 2018) methods to attend to a pressing issue in the community. In partnership with one local grief center, we identified the need for enhanced grief support for current emerging adult undergraduate students in our area. Nearly 50% of U.S. emerging adults enrolled in four-year residential universities experience the death of an important figure (Cox et al., 2015; Cupit et al., 2021), at a time when they are developing important facets of their narrative identity. Without the coherence and meaning structures provided by narrative identity, students …

The Impact Of Provider Communication On Treatment Adherence In Patients With Hypertension And Diabetes, Trey Carlson
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
Current research cites effective provider communication as an important factor in improving treatment adherence and the health outcomes of patients. This study examines the effect of provider communication on treatment adherence in patients with chronic illnesses with a specific focus on hypertension and diabetes. Provider communication was measured using patient satisfaction surveys and treatment compliance was measured as the percentage of hypertensive and diabetic patients with a blood pressure below 140/90 mmHg and hemoglobin A1C levels below 9%. A one-way MANOVA revealed that provider communication had no significant impact on the combined treatment compliance variables for hypertension and diabetes (Wilk’s …

Advanced Screening For Intimate Partner Violence To Prevent Adverse Pregnancy And Maternal Outcomes, Emilia R. Valdez
Nursing | Student Research Posters
Background: Intimate Partner Violence experienced by pregnant individuals contributes to adverse pregnancy outcomes and maternal health. A mother’s exposure to Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) can affect their ability to carry a healthy pregnancy to term (38 – 40 weeks gestational age) and places them at risk for comorbidities including; Preterm birth, Intrauterine Growth Restriction, Low Birth Weight/ Small for Gestational Age, Premature Rupture of Membranes and Miscarriage. The incidence of IPV screening is not accessible to all pregnant individuals due to healthcare providers lack of education, time constraints in the workplace, bias and discomfort towards IPV. The implementation of …

Tradiciones Orales Andinas: Métodos De Preservar La Memoria E Historia Indígena En El Pueblo De Paru Paru, Calypso Hansen
Peru: Indigenous Peoples and Globalization
In this report, I collected a series of stories, legends, and narrations from various people in the community of Paru Paru, a 45-minute drive north of Pisac. Paru Paru is a town of 140 families, the vast majority Quechua-speaking. I interviewed various people, with varying ages between 25 and 90 years old using a sociolinguistic and cultural anthropology lens. I focused on collecting recordings of my participants speaking in Quechua, to help with assuring that the culture and history of the town will not be lost with the years. I found various common themes, such as origin stories that explain …
Los Impactos Del Comercio Justo En Las Vidas De Artesanas Indígenas En Puno, Perú: Estudio De Caso De Intercrafts Perú, Neha Kohli
Peru: Indigenous Peoples and Globalization
This paper explores how fair trade shapes both the economic realities and personal aspirations of Indigenous women in Puno, Peru. Its findings are grounded in 23 semi-structured interviews with women from three artisan associations connected to Intercrafts Perú. Whilst fair trade offers an avenue for economic development that promotes cultural preservation, in the 4 interviews I conducted, many women shared that their income falls short of the national minimum wage and does not ensure food security. In contrast, women who have completed university reported greater economic stability and food security, suggesting that education is a key factor in improving quality …

Sembrando La Justicia Hídrica: Soluciones Indígenas A La Escasez De Agua En La Comunidad De Paru Paru, Ella Nichol
Peru: Indigenous Peoples and Globalization
This research focuses on the ways in which neoliberal policies and climate change are transforming water culture in indigenous communities of the Peruvian Andes. Specifically, the study explores how indigenous communities are responding to water scarcity through the ancestral practice of planting and harvesting water. Residents of Andean regions are some of the most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change; irregular rainfall and melting glaciers are creating an unprecedented loss of water sources. Furthermore, the water management of the Peruvian state, using a neoliberal model, is restricting the access to and use of water for indigenous communities. This research …

Conservación Biológica Harakbut: Estudio De Caso Ori’Numba, Anya Held
Peru: Indigenous Peoples and Globalization
Through interviews, observations, and bibliographic research, this project investigates the Indigenous-based conservation project of Ori’Numba Garden. In 2018, the Tayori family moved to Ori’Numba and began transforming it from a former livestock farm into a holistic conservation project. The paper details the history of Ori’Numba and the process of its creation, the modern and traditional agricultural techniques used in the garden, a register of the pineapple and native bee species, and some of the relevant Harakbut mythology. Ori’Numba clearly demonstrates that there is Indigenous conservation biology, not just “indigenized” Western conservation biology.
Courting A New International Order: The Evolution Of The International Humanitarian Law Community On Addressing Hybrid Security Threats, Barrett Ahn
Switzerland: International Studies and Multilateral Diplomacy
As state and non-state actors become more interconnected through the advent of sophisticated technology, diverse forms of media, and the development of digital infrastructure, new threats of a hybrid nature are emerging. The international humanitarian law (IHL) community is reassessing how IHL can apply and adapt to the hybridity of non-traditional warfare. This research paper explores the challenges to IHL surging from two branches of hybrid security threats: cognitive/psychological operations and cyber operations. Through interviews with experts in the fields of IHL, international law, cybersecurity, and international relations, along with the analysis of secondary sources and central IHL treaties (the …
From Policy To Perception: How Government Motivations Shape Front-Of-Package Nutrition Labeling And Influence Consumer Understanding In The Usa, Switzerland, And Chile, Amani Malickel
Switzerland: Global Health and Development Policy
This research examines front-of-package nutrition labeling (FOPNL) systems in three distinct policy environments: the United States (voluntary industry-led), Switzerland (government-endorsed voluntary), and Chile (mandatory warning labels). Through comparative policy analysis and consumer interviews, the study evaluates how different regulatory approaches influence nutritional awareness and purchasing behaviors. Key findings demonstrate that Chile's mandatory warning labels are most effective at reducing consumption of unhealthy foods and improving consumer understanding, particularly among children. In contrast, voluntary systems in the U.S. and Switzerland show limited impact due to inconsistent implementation and industry resistance. The study highlights significant implementation challenges, including First Amendment concerns in …
Comparative Analyses Of Neurorehabilitation Regulations And Health Equity In The U.S., Switzerland, And China: Implications For Universal Health Coverage, Linyue Lu
Switzerland: Global Health and Development Policy
Introduction: As populations age and the burden of neurological conditions rises, equitable access to neurorehabilitation has emerged as a critical yet under-addressed component of Universal Health Coverage (UHC). This comparative study examines how healthcare structures in the United States, Switzerland, and China shape neurorehabilitation equity. Methods: This analysis combines semi-structured interviews with seven healthcare experts (neurorehabilitation clinicians, health economists, and scholars) and a systematic review of peer-reviewed literature, policy documents, and demographic data. Results: In the U.S., fragmented insurance models and high out-of-pocket costs disproportionately limit access for low-income and rural populations. Switzerland’s universal coverage masks the inequities driven by …
