Church As Community: Religiosity And Queer Identity Among Emerging Adults In Adventist Higher Education, Chris N. Ngugi
Church As Community: Religiosity And Queer Identity Among Emerging Adults In Adventist Higher Education, Chris N. Ngugi
Honors Theses
How do LGBTQ+ or “queer”-identifying emerging adults attending Seventh-day Adventist Christian institutions of higher education in the United States relate to their religiosity or relationship with religion? Within certain religious contexts (Avishai, 2020; Chiongbian et al., 2023; Lockett et al., 2023), including within the Seventh-day Adventist church (Pew Research Center, 2014), an individual’s LGBTQ+ identity may seem incongruent with commonly held stigmas, norms, doctrines, and beliefs maintained by religious group members and officials. LGBTQ+ identity and religiosity in such contexts are often described through “conflict” and “beyond conflict” theories, principally Cognitive Dissonance Theory and Identity Integration Theory (Rêgo-Moreira et al., …

Actions Speak Louder Than Words: Public Perceptions Of Victim Forgiveness And Offender Reparative Effort, Samantha Does
Bridges: An Undergraduate Journal of Contemporary Connections
Passing judgment is an inevitable aspect of human behaviour, particularly in cases of severe wrongdoing or crime. These assessments can affect the individuals implicated in the transgressions, including the victim and offender. This research enhances our understanding of how third parties judge offenders and victims of crime, exploring whether offender participation in rehabilitation, offender remorsefulness, and the victim's forgiveness following a crime influence the third party's judgement of the victim and offender. Participants were presented with a scenario depicting a significant transgression, after which they responded to prompts concerning their perceptions of the event and the people involved. The findings …

Department of Medical Oncology Faculty Papers
BACKGROUND: Despite HPV vaccination reducing the prevalence of cervical cancer by 90%, vaccination rates remain lower among communities of color due to vaccine hesitancy and mistrust in traditional public health messengers. The emergence of social media influencers, a newer kind of messenger, presents a unique opportunity to share immunization messages in new ways with a variety of communities. This paper reviews the qualitative findings from a study aimed at assessing influencers' perceptions of and approaches to sharing messaging about the HPV vaccine.
METHODS: Guided by several theories (Theory of Planned Behavior, Narrative Theory, and Opinion Leader Theory), the study team …

Mitigating The Effects Of The Covid-19 Pandemic On Human Development: The Case Of Tortugas, Balanga City, Bataan, Patrick C. De Leon
Journal of Public Affairs and Development
This study aimed to analyze how Barangay Tortugas implemented its programs and projects to mitigate the adverse effects of the COVID-19 pandemic in the context of the three elements of human development (health, education, and access to resources). Data were gathered through key informant interviews using a structured questionnaire. Purposive sampling was used in selecting respondents comprised of eight barangay officials, the school principal, 13 teachers, and 60 beneficiaries of the Barangay Kitchen Station and the vaccination program. Results of the study showed that among the various programs and projects being implemented in the barangay, only three (3) were successful. …

Prehistoric Origins Of The Chippewa Indians, Ronald A. Janke
Prehistoric Origins Of The Chippewa Indians, Ronald A. Janke
The Geographical Bulletin
This paper investigates the location of precontact Chippewa contacts and the complexities of the geographic environment in which they occurred. Reconstructed land use and settlement maps along with recent archaeological and linguistic research have added new ideas concerning the origin, early migrations, and contacts of the Chippewa Indians. Very little is known about the culture and the area that the Chippewa occupied before the time of European influence. According to the legends and traditions of the Chippewa, they originally inhabited the area next to the Gulf of the St. Lawrence River, near the Atlantic Ocean, and gradually moved westward and …

The Impact Of A Growth Center On An Agricultural Hinterland: A Case Study Of Taegu, Korea, Soohyun Chon
The Impact Of A Growth Center On An Agricultural Hinterland: A Case Study Of Taegu, Korea, Soohyun Chon
The Geographical Bulletin
Although the location of large urban centers such as Seoul, Pusan, and Taegu has had a major impact on changes in the surrounding agricultural hinterland, regional differences of agricultural development in Korea have not received much attention until recently (Fig. 1). Keidel, for example, noted that Kyongi-do and Kyongsangnam-do have higher agricultural income levels than the remainder of the country because they produce commercial crops for Seoul and Pusan, respectively.1 More recently, after the construction of a modern highway between these two cities, Chungchongbuk-do and Kyongsangbuk-do provinces emerged as the major suppliers of commercial crops for Seoul and Pusan. If …
An Evaluation Of Planned Settlement In The Bolivian Tropics: The 1974 Plans, Martha A. Works
An Evaluation Of Planned Settlement In The Bolivian Tropics: The 1974 Plans, Martha A. Works
The Geographical Bulletin
In the early 1960's Bolivia made the first set of attempts at colonization of the lowlands, or Oriente, lying east of the Andes. This effort was largely in response to events that had taken place earlier in the century, namely the Chaco War, the Social Revolution of 1952 and the collapse of the mining economy.1 Colonization schemes were implemented in an attempt to provide enough land for the people, increase opportunities for displaced miners, and to promote national unity by settling the eastern areas of the nation.2 The early colonization projects were concentrated in two areas -the Alto Beni (east …

Bending Traditions To Avoid Breaking The Rulesthe Arthur, Illinois Amish, Page Redmond
Bending Traditions To Avoid Breaking The Rulesthe Arthur, Illinois Amish, Page Redmond
The Geographical Bulletin
When the people of the Amish faith fled religious persecution in Europe and arrived in Pennsylvania about 1727, they came not to start a new life, but to preserve the old ways of living and farming.1 However, the reality of the outside has crept into their sheltered culture in the form of land shortages and higher prices for that land which does exist. These pressures, coupled with the all too constant awareness of the world outside their culture and its many changes and advances, have caused a weakening in some of the once strictly held traditions. From the outside, it …
Rural Development Versus Rural Preservation: Conflicting Usda Land Use Programs And Policies, Susan Oglesbee Burt
Rural Development Versus Rural Preservation: Conflicting Usda Land Use Programs And Policies, Susan Oglesbee Burt
The Geographical Bulletin
With the mounting cost of farm ownership and operation, and the rapid increase in urbanization, the issue of farmland preservation has come to the forefront in many states, counties, townships, and villages. These factors, combined with inflation, severe fluctuations in the economy, and restrictions in the use of natural resources, have brought about heightened concern on the part of farmers in recent years. Farmers and rural communities are seeking alternative ways to cope with these conditions. Sale of their land to the highest bidder is one option that often results in conversion of prime agricultural land to other uses. The …
Suburban Land-Use Policies And. Community Pressure Groups In Southfield, Michigan, Joseph H. Kogelmann
Suburban Land-Use Policies And. Community Pressure Groups In Southfield, Michigan, Joseph H. Kogelmann
The Geographical Bulletin
Creation and preservation of affluent suburban communities is dependent upon the existence of political expedients, whose primary function is to insure perpetuation of exclusionary socioeconomic barriers. Local land-use policies, as determined by municipal zoning regulations and building codes, have become mechanisms by which the status quo is maintained. The content of local land-use policies is particularly susceptible to political influence of community pressure groups. These groups are often a major force in the community decision-making process as they seek to mold local public policy in accordance with their own conceptions. Suburban elected officials have been extremely responsive to demands of …
Seasonal And Annual Precipitation Efficiency In The Eastern United States·, Jeffrey T. Lutz
Seasonal And Annual Precipitation Efficiency In The Eastern United States·, Jeffrey T. Lutz
The Geographical Bulletin
PreCipitation efficiency (Pe) is the percentage of the average atmospheric water vapor above a station that is released and falls to earth as measurable preCipitation in a given time period. Pe is a single parameter describing the efficiency of atmospheric mechanisms in releasing moisture. Temporal and spatial variations in Pe are controlled primarily by synoptic atmospheric systems. The relationship between atmospheric systems and seasonal! annual variations in Pe is investigated for the United States east of the Rocky Mountains. Regional variations in seasonal and annual averages of Pe suggest the relative effectiveness of dynamic and thermodynamic preCipitation mechanisms. Basically, the …

Crucible Of Excellence: The Honor Society, O. Orland Maxfield
The Geographical Bulletin
It has been some time since I have heard the rather piquant phrase, "to defend one's honor." Indeed, I do not often hear the word "honor" or read of it in the current mass media. It is as though we take "honor" for granted or it has been relegated to the zone of discard along with integrity and virtue. Perhaps we have become jaundiced by the everyday, commonplace, dishonorable actions of political and business figures, and sometimes even of our closer acquaintances. Think for a moment of the aphorisms relative to honor that you have heard all of your lives. …

Once upon a time in the land of academia, there existed an esteemed Department of Geography. It was steeped in tradition and was recognized by its peers as being among the foremost academic departments in the world. Yet this recognition was inadequate to spare it from an abrupt termination. This Department of Geography whose allegiance was once claimed by such notable geographers as Carl Sauer, Preston James, George Kish and others was sentenced to extinction by the Board of Regents on June 19, 1981. It is small consolation that the doors of the Department will officially close during mid-1982. I …

The Role Of Social Support On Pandemic Challenges For Parents And Young Adult Children, David Grandel, Mackenzie Schram, Jennifer Feenstra, Seowon Song
Celebration of Research
The COVID-19 brought abrupt changes in the everyday lives of families with children worldwide. While existing research has highlighted the significant role of social support in promoting psychological well-being of both children and parents separately during the pandemic, less is known about how parents’ perceived support and life stressors may spill over to affect their children’s psychological well-being.
Participants (N = 546 families) were drawn from the Future of Families and Child Well-being Study (Reichman et al., 2001). Parents reported their perceived tangible social support (i.e., financial/ material aid; Cohen et al., 1983), family life stressors and financial threat …

The Enneagram & The Barnum Effect, Julia Anderson, Brooke Bartscher, Jay Medenwaldt
Celebration of Research
The Enneagram is a 9-type personality system that has gained widespread acceptance as a tool for self-understanding and personal growth. Despite its popularity, empirical support for it is mixed and it has not been tested critically to see if it works due to psychological biases. We hypothesized that the Enneagram seems accurate because of the Barnum effect, which explains the tendency for people perceive vague and general personality descriptions as tailored to them. Specifically, we hypothesized that:
- The highest three Enneagram types will not be rated differently from each other on accuracy.
- The highest three Enneagram types will be rated …
Long-Term Effects Of Pre-Pandemic Coparenting Support On Young Adults’ Well-Being During Covid-19, Mackenzie Schram, David Grandel, Seowon Song
Long-Term Effects Of Pre-Pandemic Coparenting Support On Young Adults’ Well-Being During Covid-19, Mackenzie Schram, David Grandel, Seowon Song
Celebration of Research
The onset of COVID-19 brought an immediate necessity for families and children to adjust to dramatic changes in everyday lives. While research has shown the important role of coparenting support on children’s well-being during pandemic, less is known about the long-term effects of pre-pandemic coparenting support on young adult children’s life stressors and psychological well-being after its onset. Such understanding is crucial for informing interventions that promote a strong family foundation before stressful events like COVID-19 and better adjustments for young adult children and their families in future crises.
Participants (N = 546 families) were drawn from the Future …
Pareidolia And Creative Potential: Exploring Individual Differences In Attention To Pareidolia, Anna Prinz
Pareidolia And Creative Potential: Exploring Individual Differences In Attention To Pareidolia, Anna Prinz
James Madison Undergraduate Research Journal (JMURJ)
Faces are important stimuli in our environments and elicit a greater attentional response than non-faces. This is also true for pareidolic faces, which are objects in which individuals see features of faces such as eyes and mouths. Creative potential can affect pareidolic processing. Recent studies have found that perceptions of pareidolia occur more often and quickly in individuals with higher creative potential (HCP) compared to individuals with lower creative potential (LCP), which might contribute to greater distractibility for HCP individuals. In the present study, I expected that individuals with HCP would be more distracted by less pareidolic stimuli compared to …

Investigating The Effects Of Intranasal Esketamine On Suicidal Ideation In Patients With Treatment-Resistant Depression, Ciara White, Izma N. Khaliq, Nicholas Mischel, Kirsten Brinkmeier
Medical Student Research Symposium
Treatment-resistant depression (TRD) remains a significant challenge, with many patients failing conventional treatments. While intranasal esketamine has demonstrated efficacy for depression, its specific effects on suicidal ideation (SI)—a critical symptom of depression—are underexplored. Unlike most studies that adhere to the 84mg dosing paradigm administered twice weekly, this study explores the novel use of varying esketamine doses, including 54mg, 84mg, and 112mg. This study aims to evaluate the impact of varying esketamine doses (54mg, 84mg, and 112mg) on SI in a real-world outpatient population (n=24). This study analyzed data from patients in Southwest Michigan with major depressive disorder (MDD) and psychiatric …

Evaluating The Current State Of Quality Measure Reporting In The Merit-Based Incentive Payment System, Kinan Sawar, Geoffrey Potts Md
Medical Student Research Symposium
The Merit-Based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) requires physicians to report quality measures along with other metrics that are used to determine an annual percentage adjustment to physician Medicare Part B payments. Unfortunately, physicians have been forced to choose from an ineffective, limited set of quality measures. This has led to an overreliance on process measures, which fail to stratify physician performance effectively; it has also led to differences in the number of reporting options across specialties, resulting in unequal opportunity for physicians to succeed in MIPS. Using Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) public use file data from 2021-2024, …

Assessing Middle Eastern American Attitudes Towards Substance Use Disorders
Introduction:
Substance use disorders (SUD) among Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) populations remain largely understudied, despite evidence of high prevalence rates and lower rates of treatment engagement. Unique cultural conceptualizations and beliefs surrounding substance use disorders may perpetuate stigma, further contributing to disparities in access to and utilization of treatment services. This study aims to explore the attitudes and perspectives of individuals from MENA communities regarding substance use disorders, with the goal of identifying and addressing barriers to treatment.
Methods:
An anonymous bilingual Qualtrics survey was administered, gathering responses from …
