The Influence Of High And Low Pressure Systems On Hurricane Movement As Seen Over North America, Lawrence R. Handley
The Influence Of High And Low Pressure Systems On Hurricane Movement As Seen Over North America, Lawrence R. Handley
The Geographical Bulletin
illustrate one of the many atmospheric controls that influence the trajectories, speed, and intensity of hurricanes. The article developed as an exercise aimed at viewing the impact of welldeveloped high pressure cells on well-developed low pressure systems. The hurricane is used as the model of the well-developed low pressure system, because it is compact, mobile, and well-defined. Thus, the relationships between low pressure and high pressure systems can best be documented, isolated, and studied using hurricanes as the model. It is important that the reader understand that past research has identified many controls affecting the movements and velocities of hurricanes, …

Goodness, what a great number of hats this honored guest has worn and continues to wear. To name only a few: Doctor, Professor, Head of a Department, University President, Human Individual, Field Trip Director, Innovator, Counselor and others. Counselor. All may not agree on what is his greatest role in life, but perhaps it is that of counselor. What would be the profession of many of us tonight if there had been no R. G. Buzzard. What might I be in and where might I be if he "A. G." had not befriended me before and after graduating in June …

When I was a student at The University of Chicago, (I am S.B., 1916; S.M., 1917), and again after service in World War I, Geography and GEOLOGY were housed in Rosenwald Hall, and students of those fields rubbed elbows with each other. Students in GEOLOGY were enjoying the fellowship of a national professional fraternity in "their field". Geography students had no similar association, nor was there the least bit of concern on the part of students or faculty in Geography because of lack of this privilege. In 1924-25 I was a senior fellow in the Graduate School of Geography at …

1928-1978 Fifty Years Of Service To Geography, James Snaden
The Geographical Bulletin
Dr. Robert G. Buzzard conceived the idea of a professional fraternity in the field of geography while he was a student at the University of Chicago just prior to World War I. He dropped the matter when he was unable to find a group of students who could be interested in forming such an organization. During 1924-25, when Dr. Buzzard was a graduate student at Clark University, a local organization which came to be known as the Clark Geographical Society, made up of persons with a graduate degree from Clark, sparked the interest of many geographers. He found only lukewarm …

Climatic Preference, Jeffrey T. Lutz
Climatic Preference, Jeffrey T. Lutz
The Geographical Bulletin
Researchers within the discipline of geography seek to achieve an enhanced comprehension of man's perception of the world. Therefore, environmental perception is a subject of great consequence to geographers. Understanding of the sources of environmental variance perception in is essential to an understanding of variation in man's environmental behaviors. 1 The mental image is one of the major determinants of spatial behavior; and spatial images area an individual's cognitive representation of the spatial environment, and are a summary of what he considers meaningful about the environment.' Climate is a strategic factor affecting man's responses to the complex environment, and climate …
The Diffusion Of Transportation Effects In An Urban Network, David Burik
The Diffusion Of Transportation Effects In An Urban Network, David Burik
The Geographical Bulletin
Large urban centers are served by transport networks which consist of a great number of links and nodes. Predicting what the effects of the construction of a proposed link, the abandonment of superfluous elements, or the improvement of existing links will be on the traffic flows over the entire system is currently a timeconsuming and expensive undertaking. It is nevertheless, a necessary step investment appraisal. It is for proper often the case that the amount of available capital will only allow for the completion of a relatively small scale projects. The cost of a full traffic study to assess the …

The Geographical Bulletin
Valparaiso, with a population of 20,900 as of 1970, is a city which serves the inhabitants of Porter County in northwest Indiana. The exact variety and combination of its services are not duplicated anywhere else in the world. In addition to the expected municipal functions for a city of its size (e.g. street repair, police and fire protection, mail and newspaper deliveries, shopping, and recreation facilities), Valparaiso also performs functions that other towns in the immediate vicinity do not provide. Examples of such functions include serving as the county seat of Porter County; housing the only Lutheran university in the …
A Geographic Analysis Of Crime Rate In Southwestern Michigan: 1967·1973, James F. Lee
A Geographic Analysis Of Crime Rate In Southwestern Michigan: 1967·1973, James F. Lee
The Geographical Bulletin
In the last five years the study of the spatial dynamics of crime has become an important subfield of the geographic discipline. Numerous, well known studies have appeared, written by geographers and non-geographers alike, dealing with the geography of crime in general or with specific areal units.' While this abundance of research has been fruitful, it has, nonetheless, been haphazard. An attempt to remedy this situation was recently put forward by Phillips, who has identified several well defined research frontiers open to geographers of crime.2 Suggested by Phillips are four areas in which geographers should concentrate their crime research efforts: …

Not long ago most citizens of the United States had easy access to rural areas. Wooded lands, forests and pastoral settings were available to the greater portion of the populous. During the past one hundred years however, the nation's population has changed from being primarily rural to overwhelmingly urban. Therefore, the average resident of a large metropolitan area must travel considerable distance to gain access to rural recreation sites. For people In the lower Income ranges, the cost of traveling to distant recreation sites Is often prohibitive. Furthermore, demand for outdoor recreation has Increased In recent years.
Precipitation Efficiency Under Varying Atmosph Eric Con Oitions, Jeffrey T. Lutz
Precipitation Efficiency Under Varying Atmosph Eric Con Oitions, Jeffrey T. Lutz
The Geographical Bulletin
A strategic step in the assessment of water availability for a given location is the prediction of the amounts and temporal variability of precipitation. Considering the present state of the art, long-term meteorological forecasts of precipitation are not adequately accurate or reliable for predictive use. Since most predictions are based upon simple statistical analyses of past rainfall records, they are inherently unsatisfactory In that preci pitation production processes are ignored. Determination of the causes of spatial and temporal variations in the amount of precipitation produced by particular atmospheric systems in specific locations is important in assessing water availability. A valuable …

"County Seats In The Middle Western Urban System, Thomas J. Baerwald
The Geographical Bulletin
The county seat played an important role in the development of the Middle Western urban system. Studies of the county seat's most visible expression noted the importance of the courthouse in the establishment of Middle Western urban places. Price asserted, "The courthouse was [the town's] reason for being, its first central function, the seat of its creator. Even had no town been laid off, a community of businesses and residents would have gathered around it." The frequent use of "county seats" to designate middle level places of the Middle Western urban hierarchy, places smaller than gateway cities but larger than …

Do Undergraduates Get Enough Sleep? Trends From 2000 To 2024 According To The National College Health Assessment, Bianca Welch, Khanh Bui
Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium
The National Sleep Foundation (2020) recommends that adults aim to get 9 hours of sleep nightly. Research (Solan, 2023) shows that inadequate sleep can place individuals at a higher risk for mental health conditions.
Since the Spring of 2000, the American College Health Association has collected data on the well-being of college students through its National College Health Assessment (NCHA), which includes questions broadly related to health and is administered during the Fall and Spring semesters.
Our study examined sleep trends among undergraduates from Spring 2000 to Spring 2024.
More specifically, we examined undergraduates’ responses to the question “How many …

According to Interpersonal Acceptance-Rejection Theory (IPARTheory), feeling loved and accepted in childhood is crucial (Rohner, 2021). Cross-cultural studies show that unmet parental acceptance can lead to negative outcomes. This study examined how perceived parental rejection in childhood affects emerging adults’ romantic relationships, friendships, social interactions, and coping behaviors.
A total of 174 participants (67% women, 32% men, 1 non-binary; M age = 19.86, SD = 1.55) completed an online survey with established scales measuring perceived parental rejection, relationship dynamics, coping strategies, and social behaviors (Cronbach’s α = .76–.95).
Perceived maternal rejection was linked to more withdrawal in romantic relationships (r …

Fitspiration And The Prevalence Of Orthorexia Symptomatology In A Male Population, Avery N. Encalade, Jennifer A. Harriger, Janet P. Trammell
Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium
Orthorexia nervosa (ON) is a condition characterized by an unhealthy obsession with eating healthy food, often leading to psychological impairment (Oberle & Lipschuetz, 2018). Fitspiration is a social media trend that has gained popularity in recent years, showcasing idealized physiques and promoting rigid dietary practices along with intense exercise in pursuit of health. Using Thompson et al.'s (1999) Tripartite Influence Model of the Sociocultural Theory as a framework, the researchers hypothesized that increased viewership of fitspiration content would be associated with higher orthorexia symptomatology and would be moderated by the internalization of sociocultural ideals and physical appearance comparisons. Participants included …

Art For All: Art Exhibition Programming For Visitors With Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities, Micaela Shackleford
Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium
As the art world strives to invite more of the general population into a more reachable experience of art, it is imperative to include the disabled population in that invitation. Given the numerous benefits of participation in art-centered activities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDDs), it is necessary for centers for the arts to create programming that makes their services more accessible and engaging for disabled individuals. While organizations have made efforts to elevate the work of disabled artists, there has been a less consistent movement toward more accessible art museum programs. A key aspect of encouraging engagement …

White Evangelical Republican Attitudes Toward Political Enemies, Compromise, And Democratic Norms, Rochelle Williams
Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium
Using data from ANES and the Pew Research Center, I examine white evangelicals’ attitudes toward perceived out groups and political compromise. I compare their attitudes to the national average to see if evangelicals are consistently unique. I also compare white evangelical Republicans’ attitudes to those of non-evangelical Republicans to see if evangelicals stand out among Republicans as well. White evangelical Republicans feel more negatively toward outgroups and are less supportive of compromise than non-evangelical Republicans and the national average.
Does A Sexual Education Intervention Affect Students' Critique Of Hookup Culture?, Isabella Mullin, Steve Rouse, Janet Trammell
Does A Sexual Education Intervention Affect Students' Critique Of Hookup Culture?, Isabella Mullin, Steve Rouse, Janet Trammell
Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium
Hookup Culture has created a pervasive sexual script on college campuses. This dominant culture urges students to hookup frequently and routinely based on several myths, such as the belief that hookups benefit all participants equally or that they give a person an opportunity to express sexual freedom. Studies have emphasized the need for comprehensive sexual education for young adults exposed to or participating in hookup culture. However, to the best of our knowledge, no curriculum has been developed to raise awareness of the detrimental realities of hookup culture. College students at Pepperdine University were randomly assigned to a hookup culture …

Self-Efficacy As A Moderator Of The Effectiveness Of A Sleep Hygiene Intervention, Sabrina Krebs, Nataria Joseph, Janet Trammell
Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium
Interventions that address sleep hygiene knowledge and behaviors have yielded inconclusive results. The aim of the current study was to assess the effectiveness of an online sleep hygiene intervention on modifying sleep hygiene behavior and sleep quality, hypothesizing that the use of a sleep hygiene intervention will be more effective at increasing sleep hygiene behaviors and sleep quality compared to the control. In addition, we hypothesized that self-efficacy may moderate this effect, with the intervention being more effective among those with high levels of self-efficacy compared to those with low levels. Participants included 66 college students (78.3% female). Participants were …

ONU Student Research Colloquium
Fear-related disorders are often treated with exposure therapy, a technique based on the concept of extinction. However, this type of therapy is ineffective for many individuals, so finding a pharmacological adjunct that augments the extinction of fear could lead to better treatment outcomes. In recent preclinical work, investigators have shown that psychedelics can accelerate the extinction of fear, potentially through their impact on neurotrophic signaling. We previously found that psilocybin exerted sex-dependent effects on the extinction of conditioned fear to an isolated cue (i.e., a tone). Specifically, psilocybin enhanced the extinction of cue fear in male rats but impaired it …

Hb 1557 Impact On Family Functions, Andi Brabham
Hb 1557 Impact On Family Functions, Andi Brabham
Undergraduate Research Conference
Families are often noted as the foundation of this country, so it is important to consider all families when implementing new policies. In 2022, the Parental Rights in Education bill (HB 1557) was approved in Florida. It was put into place with the intention of benefitting children and families, however, not every family was considered. Main points from HB 1557 include giving parents the right to know any information obtained on their children, the right of parents to have more control over decision making for their children, and the prohibition of discussions or teachings on sexuality and gender identity within …
