After The Catastrophe: Rwanda's Transformation, Zhijun He
After The Catastrophe: Rwanda's Transformation, Zhijun He
International Studies Honors Projects
Standard development theory holds that recovery requires institutions first: courts, fiscal systems, the rule of law. Rwanda in 1994 had none—and rebuilt a state. The state must extract to build capacity, deliver to build legitimacy; when both collapse simultaneously, no entry point remains. Somalia's three-decade failure confirms the trap. Rwanda broke it.
This thesis argues that Rwanda's trajectory is not an exception to the good governance consensus but a refutation of it. Through analytical synthesis of the existing scholarship on four post-genocide institutional mechanisms— gacaca community courts, umuganda collective labor, imihigo performance contracts, and ingando political education camps—the thesis develops …

Território Brincapé: The First Adventure Playground Experience In Portugal, Rita Frade, Ana Rita Fonseca, Frederico Lopes, Sandra Nascimento
International Journal of Playwork Practice
Território Brincapé (TB) - Community Space for Free Play was a seminal project in Lisbon designed to deliver weekly play sessions to 112 children between 6 and 10 years old, for 1.5 hours during school time, at a private sandpit just outside a school. TB was developed under the ethos of playwork practice and was conceptualised as an adventure playground. This is a report of how we navigated this endeavour, focusing mainly on the perspective of the playwork practitioners. Specifically, it documents the questions that we dwelled upon through reflection and which aspects of this process we focused on. We …
The Impact Of Mindfulness-Based Journaling On Psychological Well-Being, Jonah Guthrie
The Impact Of Mindfulness-Based Journaling On Psychological Well-Being, Jonah Guthrie
Honors Projects
This study investigated the effects of mindfulness-based journaling compared to free-form journaling on perceived stress, emotion regulation, and mindfulness in undergraduate students. Participants (N = 43) were randomly assigned to either a mindfulness-based journaling group or a free-form journaling group. Both groups journaled daily for two weeks and completed pre- and post-intervention assessments using the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS), and Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ).
A series of 2 × 2 mixed-design repeated measures ANOVAs revealed a significant main effect of time for perceived stress, F(1, 7) = 28.38, p = .003, …
Parent–Child Interaction Therapy Adapted For Older Children, Luke W. Badley
Parent–Child Interaction Therapy Adapted For Older Children, Luke W. Badley
Dissertations, 2020-current
Externalizing behavior problems in children refer to negative outward actions directed toward others and the environment (Liu, 2004; Maughan et al., 2005). Between 2013–2019, the CDC reported a prevalence of 8.9%, with the highest rates in children aged 6–11 (Bitsko et al., 2022). If untreated, these behaviors may worsen and impact broader psychological functioning (Masten & Cicchetti, 2010). A review of the literature regarding the treatment of child behavior problems using Behavioral Parent Training (BPT) interventions highlights the critical role that parents play in the development and treatment of childhood behavior problems. BPT interventions enable parents and other important adults …

Do Gun-Purchase Waiting Periods Save Lives?, Grace E. Arnold, Mitchell Blaine Priestley
Do Gun-Purchase Waiting Periods Save Lives?, Grace E. Arnold, Mitchell Blaine Priestley
Economics Faculty Publications and Presentations
We study the impact of gun-purchase waiting periods on suicide rates using county-level mortality data from 1991-2019. We find that waiting periods are associated with a reduction in both firearm and overall suicide rates of approximately 5% and 2%, respectively. Novelly, we find that counties that are within 50 miles from a state without a waiting period experience no statistically significant reduction in suicides. Our findings reveal that the decrease in suicides under a waiting period is driven by counties that are more than 50 miles from a non-restricted neighboring state.

Perception Of Climate In North Carolina, Jeffrey T. Lutz
Perception Of Climate In North Carolina, Jeffrey T. Lutz
The Geographical Bulletin
Geographers strive for a better understanding of how man perceives the world in which he lives. Environmental perception is a strategic concern within geography; and climate is an integral factor influencing man's responses to the complex environment. This study focuses on climatic perception, which constitutes an integral aspect of environmental awareness. Much work has been done in the field of environmental perception. Studies have dealt with the environmental in general, the perception of weather terminology and forecasting effectiveness, and specific climatic extremes or hazards such as flood and drought. However, research concerning the perception of general climatic conditions is lacking. …

Factors Affecting Distribution Of Cattle In India, E. Dayal
Factors Affecting Distribution Of Cattle In India, E. Dayal
The Geographical Bulletin
The problem of surplus cattle population in India has been widely discussed. The low yield of milk and the roaming cattle everywhere, even in the cities, give an idea of surplus cattle population, and have led to the general izations made about the irrational wastefulness of the large cattle numbers. However, the usefulness of cattle in India should not be judged only in terms of milk yield, because cattle contribute to the prosperity of the farmer in more important ways than by providing milk. The basic question of why the large cattle population is felt to be necessary must be …

This issue's "Comments" should probably be entitled "Odds and Ends". Many things come to mind, and a few are recorded here. In a recent issue we invited your attention to the Congress review of some NSF Teacher Education and curriculum development activities. Congress won. No money has been budgeted for Teacher Centered Programs. After having worked in these types of activities most every year since 1960, I view the decisions with mixed emotions. It was the conclusion of our staff that we did some good in these progr~ms. I visited many exparticipants in their schools, talked with their colleagues and …

Role Of Academic Libraries Complicated Function In Supporting The Integration Of Information Literacy: Critical Thinking Skills In The Digital Era, Jignashaben Dilipbhai Vasava, Rajeshkumar Motilal Gamit Dr
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
As libraries give people free access to books, research materials, and cultural events, libraries have long been an essential component of society. However, as a result of the rise of the internet and other forms of digital technology, the purpose of libraries has become far more complex. Despite this, libraries continue to serve as an essential centre for a large number of people and locations. They offer digital resources like as databases, e-books, and streaming media, in addition to tangible goods such as books, magazines, and newspapers, which are not available anywhere else. In addition to serving as a calm …

We Are What We Maintain—Including Ourselves: Infrastructure And Interdependence Of Library Work In The Midst Of Disruption, Mary J. Snyder Broussard, Joel M. Burkholder, Jeremy Mcginniss, Donna Witek
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Library workers need a language and a framework for advocacy that effectively names and makes visible the key elements and interconnected nature of our work. This article proposes Burkholder’s and McGinniss’s (2020) maintenance schema, which consists of resources, platform, energy, and vision, as a viable language and framework for this kind of advocacy. It does this by analyzing several major issues facing academic libraries that were exacerbated by the disruption of the COVID-19 pandemic: declining budgets, inequalities in academic libraries, and wide-spread exhaustion among library workers. The application of the maintenance schema to these specific issues demonstrates how the schema …
Mind The Gap: Understanding Why Gen Z’S Sustainability Values Do Not Align With Fashion Purchasing Behavior. Exploring The Factors That Contribute To Values-Behavior Gap, Aileen Charron
Honors Projects in Mathematics and Economics
This thesis investigates the values-behavior gap that exists among Gen Z consumers, specifically investigating why sustainability values often do not translate into sustainable fashion purchasing. Through a multidisciplinary literature review highlighting key economic, marketing, psychological, and anthropological theories of consumer demand, this study identifies the complex motivations behind Gen Z’s fashion choices. A survey distributed to Gen Z respondents (n = 42) measured sustainability values, fashion purchasing habits, and influences across the four different theoretical domains of demand. Respondents were categorized into four subcategories of purchaser based on their sustainability values and consumption behaviors. Analyses had a particular focus on …
Sports Economics And Regional Prosperity: Exploring The Economic Impacts Of Success Of “Big Four” Teams, Gavin Todtenkopf
Sports Economics And Regional Prosperity: Exploring The Economic Impacts Of Success Of “Big Four” Teams, Gavin Todtenkopf
Honors Projects in Mathematics and Economics
Recent years have seen massive increases in government spending on sports stadiums and overall sports investments. The justification for this trend is that sports create positive externalities that can boost the overall economy of a region that the team resides in. However, economists cannot come to a unified conclusion about whether a single team can positively impact economic growth. Therefore, this study looks at the effects of a region's largest sports teams, collectively known as the “Big 4.” This includes teams in the MLB, NBA, NFL, and NHL. An econometric economic model is used to estimate the relationship between economic …
Skepticism Beyond Knowledge: External World Moral Skepticism And The Crisis Of Political Rhetoric, Aanya Ghosh
Skepticism Beyond Knowledge: External World Moral Skepticism And The Crisis Of Political Rhetoric, Aanya Ghosh
Bates College Journal of Political Studies
This paper examines the application of external world moral skepticism to contemporary political discourse and decision-making processes. Drawing from epistemological traditions that question our ability to access moral truths about the external world, I argue that a pervasive form of moral skepticism has infiltrated modern political rhetoric, creating a crisis of justification for political action. Through discursive analysis of political communication across partisan divides, I demonstrate how skeptical attitudes toward external moral facts have transformed from philosophical positions to rhetorical strategies that undermine democratic deliberation. This transformation has significant implications for how political actors justify policies, how citizens evaluate political …

Smer, Anti-Western Populism, And Political Violence In Post-Communist Slovakia, Augustus Giller
Smer, Anti-Western Populism, And Political Violence In Post-Communist Slovakia, Augustus Giller
Bates College Journal of Political Studies
Europe today is characterized by an abundance of new, right-wing populist parties which have established themselves as signifi cant and formidable players in European parliaments. A fl ashpoint of this rise has been in the former Eastern Bloc, where right-wing populist parties can both push conservative social policies and use rhetoric surrounding the ongoing war in Ukraine to command attention. This approach can be seen in the Smer-Social Democracy party, which has risen to be a mainstay in Slovakia. Like many other former Eastern Bloc states, Slovakia underwent a substantial post-communist transition process that had lasting impacts on the nation, …
Things Fall Apart: Analyzing 14 Years Of Conservative Rule In Britain, Winston Singh
Things Fall Apart: Analyzing 14 Years Of Conservative Rule In Britain, Winston Singh
Bates College Journal of Political Studies
The 2024 UK elections have concluded, and the Labour Party won a landslide victory with 410 seats. This election ended the Conservatives' 14-year reign, which can be described as some of Britain’s most chaotic since the end of World War II. These years were marked by five different prime ministers, numerous scandals, and historic votes that have significantly altered the UK’s path and continue to have lasting consequences today. This piece will analyze the Conservative government's rule from 2010 to 2024, providing an in-depth examination of its actions and their impact on the party's declining popularity. The second part will …
Transforming Ivan The Terrible: History, Memory Politics, And Monuments In Putin’S Russia, Lena Lapierre
Transforming Ivan The Terrible: History, Memory Politics, And Monuments In Putin’S Russia, Lena Lapierre
Bates College Journal of Political Studies
Like Joseph Stalin before him, Vladimir Putin has brought Ivan the Terrible back from oblivion and has made the memorialization of one of the country’s most infamous and brutal rulers a centerpiece of the Kremlin's contemporary propaganda toolkit. Analyzing a wide spectrum of Russian language sources such as the political speeches, historical lectures, protest posters, and Russian social media posts, this paper explores the various factors motivating the Putin regime’s revitalization of Ivan the Terrible and outlines how ordinary Russians have responded to the politicized whitewashing of their history. In 2016, with much fanfare, the provincial city of Orel erected …

One Step Back, Two Steps Forward: How Ballistic Missile Defenses Put Us On The Path To War, Karan Kuppa-Apte
Bates College Journal of Political Studies
This article argues that the use of credible homeland ballistic missile defense (BMD) systems counterintuitively encourages offense dominance by undermining the deterrence by punishment behind mutually assured destruction (MAD). It contends that while BMD is a defensive technology, under conditions of MAD that defensive capability, if credible, is perceived by adversaries to signal an intention to circumvent deterrence. Fearing an attack with impunity, adversaries increase their supply of offensive weapons, pressuring defenders to improve their BMD capabilities, and an arms race thus emerges. Using detailed case studies of Israel’s missile defense against the Axis of Resistance and Chinese reactions to …

Realokasi Subsidi Bbm Untuk Investasi Energi Terbarukan Di Indonesia: Analisa Social Accounting Matrix, Sidik Nur Toha, Widyono Soetjipto
Jurnal Kebijakan Ekonomi
The challenge of energy transition is the high subsidy on fossil fuels and financing needs. Using social accounting matrix, this study examines the impact of energy transition plan and subsidy reform on economy, society and environment through three scenarios: business-as-usual scenario (Sim1), energy transition (Sim2) and phasing-out (Sim3). Sim2 and Sim3 are conducted without subsidy transfer (Sim2 & Sim3) and subsidy transfer for financing renewable power plants (Sim2.1 & Sim 3.1). The result is Sim3 has better economic, social and environmental impacts than Sim1. When reallocation is conducted, reallocation simulation shows positive impacts on economy and society with significant differences …

Cross Section Curve Data Autoregression, Peter C.B. Phillips, Liang Jiang
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
This paper develops and applies new asymptotic theory for estimation and inference in parametric autoregression with function valued cross section curve time series. The study provides a new approach to dynamic panel regression with high dimensional dependent cross section data. Here we deal with the stationary case and provide a full set of results extending those of standard Euclidean space autoregression, showing how function space curve cross section data raises efficiency and reduces bias in estimation and shortens confidence intervals in inference. Methods are developed for high-dimensional covariance kernel estimation that are useful for inference. The findings reveal that function …
