Sickening Responsibility- Thoughts On Care Work From A Chronically Ill Scholar Activist, Samuel Z. Shelton May 2023

Sickening Responsibility- Thoughts On Care Work From A Chronically Ill Scholar Activist, Samuel Z. Shelton

International Journal on Responsibility

What does it mean to focus practices of responsibility around sick/unwellness during pandemic times? Using a disability justice framework and drawing from my experiences as a chronically ill / sick person, in this article, I argue that responsibility takes on different meanings when examined through a critical framework that recognizes sickness as an ordinary aspect of life under interlocking systems of power, such as capitalism, White supremacy, ableism/sanism, and cisheteropatriarchy. In particular, I contend that beginning conversations about responsibility from the assumption of sickness - that everyone either sick or has the potential to become sick and that sick people …

The Application Of Transactional Fairness To The Gambling Sector, Seamus Mcgowan, Adam Rivers May 2023

The Application Of Transactional Fairness To The Gambling Sector, Seamus Mcgowan, Adam Rivers

International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking

The idea of ‘fairness’ in consumer protection has been discussed for a long time. However, more recently there has been a renewed focus on the use of unfair pricing practices and terms in consumer markets and regulators and lawmakers are responding. Practices which can be considered unfair often emerge as companies develop new and innovative ways to engage with consumers including offering different prices and / or terms to different sets of customers.

Being ‘fair and open’ is an important principle for gambling regulation. In that context, this paper focusses on fairness in gambling markets and seeks to develop a …

Safer Gambling Strategic Frameworks To Drive Collaborative And Coordinated Evidence-Based Action, Elizabeth Lusk, Jess Voll, Lindsay Kalbfleisch May 2023

Safer Gambling Strategic Frameworks To Drive Collaborative And Coordinated Evidence-Based Action, Elizabeth Lusk, Jess Voll, Lindsay Kalbfleisch

International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking

Reducing gambling-related harms at community, regional, national, and global levels requires evidence-informed, collaborative, and coordinated actions. Safer gambling strategic frameworks can identify and align stakeholders’ efforts to inspire and guide action. This is particularly salient with gambling being increasingly borderless with the proliferation of online gambling products and platforms. In the absence of safer gambling strategic frameworks, stakeholders’ efforts can be inconsistent or misguided, preventative opportunities are missed, social and economic costs are under accounted, and a competitive environment emerges when supportive and reifying efforts are more optimal. Safer gambling strategic frameworks create a rubric to continuously integrate emerging evidence, …

Drawing from key concepts of the social practices theory, this study aims to explore how do mobile F2P games fit into the players’ everyday activities and occupations. Specifically, in what ways can time, mobile technologies and games shape the integration of gaming practices into the …

Unpacking the determinants of table player win / loss and the elasticity of table house advantage

Overview

There is significant disagreement about the role of house advantage (HA) in player value. For instance, the operations team often seek to introduce games with high HA, under the assumption that marginal improvements in HA translates into higher house win. By contrast, many casino marketing professionals argue that higher HA only reduces playtime and that a player’s budget is generally fixed. Leveraging over 300m individual player decisions from a major online Asian operator, we explore the role of HA …

How Does The Responsible Gambling Discourse Shape The Mind Of Young Adult Gamblers?, Annie-Claude Savard, Jean-Philippe Laforge, Mélina Bouffard, Sylvia Kairouz

International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking

The responsible gambling approach is the subject of significant debate in the scientific community due to its tendency to individualize responsibility, focusing most heavily on gambler’s responsibility for gambling-related harm. In the meantime, studies have showed that young adult gamble at a higher rate than the general adult population. They are now more than ever susceptible to being drawn in to gambling due to the availability of online gambling. Stake Size And Wagering In A Professional Betting Environment – When Data Affects Decision Making, Anthony Bedford, Tristan Barnett May 2023

Stake Size And Wagering In A Professional Betting Environment – When Data Affects Decision Making, Anthony Bedford, Tristan Barnett

International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking

In this work, we discuss the structure of a number of professional wagering organisations, and how they attempt to deal with the “Ender’s Game” effect – when knowledge of the true nature of the ‘war being wagered’ may have affected the process and choice of betting. We analyse the responses from professional wagering and betting organisations, whom operate predominately in Horseracing and sportsbetting, and they identify the importance of separation of decisions around choices to make and the stakes and size of wagers that are linked to the decisions. The proposed model, practically carried out by one company, is an …

Pareto Effects In The Ecasino: Differences Across Online Products And Links With Self-Exclusion, Xiaolei Deng, Luke Clark Dr

International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking

Consumption of many goods adheres to the Pareto rule (or 80:20 law) that the 20% most engaged consumers generate 80% of revenue. Using a dataset from the eCasino section of the provincial online gambling platform in British Columbia, Canada, we recently observed that Pareto values exceeded the conventional 80:20 ratio, with the top 20% generating ~92% of bets and ~90% of revenue (Deng, Lesch & Clark, 2021 Addictive Behaviors 120: 106968). In this presentation, we will examine how these effects vary across different gambling product types within the eCasino: online slot machine games, table games, video poker, and other probability …

The Emancipatory Praxis Of Peace And Conflict Studies: The Field Of Genocide Studies, Daniel Rothbart, Douglas Irvin-Erickson May 2023

The Emancipatory Praxis Of Peace And Conflict Studies: The Field Of Genocide Studies, Daniel Rothbart, Douglas Irvin-Erickson

Peace and Conflict Studies

The field of Peace and Conflict Studies (PCS) was launched in the mid-twentieth century with revolutionary aspirations for explaining, describing and understanding protracted violent conflicts. The field’s architects called for inquiry into the “whole person” of conflict actors that required inquiry into the social, psychological and political spheres of their lives. But the proposed research perspectives for carrying out such inquiry were devoid of revolutionary prescription. Regarding such perspectives, they set the stage that continues to this day for disciplinary conservatism by invoking research traditions from the positivist social sciences and from the interpretative social sciences. A third research tradition …

War And Peace In Ukraine: Training For History Teachers On Dynamics Of Peace And Conflict, Karina Korostelina May 2023

War And Peace In Ukraine: Training For History Teachers On Dynamics Of Peace And Conflict, Karina Korostelina

The training project, supported by the Civil Peace Service and financed by the German government through Deutsche Gesellschaft für …

Determinants Of Conflicts In Local Water Governance And Implications For Peacebuilding In Water Development, Resty Naiga Dr. May 2023

Determinants Of Conflicts In Local Water Governance And Implications For Peacebuilding In Water Development, Resty Naiga Dr.

Peace and Conflict Studies

Recent years have witnessed an increasing focus on water as a source of explicit and implicit conflicts. Water-related conflicts are partly attributed to water mismanagement that escalates water stress and conflicts. Despite this development, our current knowledge on local water conflicts within the context of water policy reforms in developing countries is limited. Given the implications of water-related conflicts on human and water security, it is essential to consider the factors influencing local water conflicts as a means to improve conflict prevention and peacebuilding in water development. Using a transdisciplinary mixed methodological approach, this article analyses variables influencing local water …

Reframing The Ontology Of Peace Studies, Anders Reagan May 2023

Reframing The Ontology Of Peace Studies, Anders Reagan

Peace and Conflict Studies

The academic field of peace studies suffers from a lack of ontological clarity, with peace researchers widely disagreeing on how to define “peace.” This internal incoherence has far-reaching implications for peace study’s scope, theories, and methodologies, and by extension, for peace practice in general. This article explores the possibility that at least part of this incoherence may be due to a fundamental misreading of peace study’s central object of study. Despite significant disagreement between peace researchers on a standardized definition of peace, there seems to be overwhelming consensus that "peace" – in all its varied academic conceptualizations – always relates …

How’S It Going With The Cptpp?, Christine Mcdaniel May 2023

How’S It Going With The Cptpp?, Christine Mcdaniel

Yeutter Institute International Trade Policy Review

There is no doubt that the United States is losing out on market access. But one of the original goals of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) was for a rules-based trading regime in the Pacific, namely rules not written by China. Thanks to Australia and Japan that seems to be happening even with the U.S. no longer at the helm.

The Comprehensive and Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership or the awkwardly nicknamed CPTPP is a Pacific trading bloc that consists of 11 countries, spanning the Pacific Rim, and includes Malaysia and Chile. The member countries represent 13% of world GDP. Once the UK …

Emotional Responses To Covid-19 Stressors Increase Information Avoidance About An Important Unrelated Health Threat, Christopher Gustafson, Kate Brooks, Syed Imran Ali Meerza, Amalia Yiannaka May 2023

Emotional Responses To Covid-19 Stressors Increase Information Avoidance About An Important Unrelated Health Threat, Christopher Gustafson, Kate Brooks, Syed Imran Ali Meerza, Amalia Yiannaka

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

The COVID-19 pandemic, like other crises, has had direct and indirect impacts on individuals, many of which have been negative. While a large body of research has examined the impacts of COVID-19 on people’s lives, there is little evidence about how COVID-19 affects decision-making broadly. Emotional responses to COVID-19-related stressors, such as illness and income loss, provide a pathway for these stressors to affect decision-making. In this study, we examine linkages between exposure to COVID-19-related stressors—focusing on temporally specific local case counts and loss of income due to the pandemic—and decisions to access information about antimicrobial resistance (AMR), another critically …

Exploring The Sociocultural Importance Of Dance Movement Therapy And African American Mental Health, Karla Victum May 2023

Exploring The Sociocultural Importance Of Dance Movement Therapy And African American Mental Health, Karla Victum

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

The following literature review investigates the role of sociocultural factors of dance/movement therapy (DMT) and the mental health of people of African descent, specifically African Americans. Sociocultural aspects of DMT are critically examined, and mental health conditions prevalent amongst African Americans are explored through a culture-specific lens. The combination of therapeutic approaches and theoretical frameworks like critical race theory and relational-cultural therapy are valuable and necessary to consider as they can more precisely underscore the importance of generational trauma and racialized oppression within the psychological distress of African Americans. This literature review presents a brief history and evolution of dance/movement …

Open The Gate! Ensuring Easy Authentication While Mitigating Cybersecurity Risks, John Felts, Matthew Ragucci, David Green

Library Faculty Presentations

The pandemic has changed almost all aspects of our professional lives. Before shuttering their doors, libraries quickly mobilized to meet the anticipated demand of content usage happening from outside the building. The ability to work remotely has been a blessing in some ways, however, library users still face challenges. Many content providers, in response to these challenges, unlocked swathes of content to prevent barriers for remote users. Upscaling remote authentication has always been a challenge. To compound matters, cybercrime risks loom large threatening campus security, specifically targeting users who are accessing resources remotely. This has uncovered skills gaps for both …

Permanent Supportive Housing As A Solution To Homelessness, Antonio Serna May 2023

Permanent Supportive Housing As A Solution To Homelessness, Antonio Serna

Carsey Publications

Homelessness in the United States has grown into a crisis, and those with disabling conditions, such as a physical disability, substance use disorders, or behavioral/mental health disorders, are disproportionately at risk. Prior research in Boston found that in three-quarters of shelter stays in the city between 2014 and 2018, the person was recorded as having a disability. The susceptibility of this group to homelessness and chronic homelessness is partly because disabilities correlate with lower incomes and job insecurity, which pose a challenge to maintaining long-term housing. It is for this reason that permanent supportive housing (PSH)—housing that is paired with …

'I Don’T Fit That Stereotype': Participant Photography And The Visual (Re)Positioning Of Black Men, Quaylan Allen

Education Faculty Articles and Research

This paper examines how Black men use a participant photography project as a tool for meaning making during the current political and social context of anti-Black racism, Black activism, and intersectional politics. Using a critical visual methodology in the analysis of the images, this paper will examine how Black men make meaning of current social issues through the types of images they produced, how they make meaning of the types of audiences they are speaking to through the project, and how these meanings are reflected through their repositioning practices in the visual project. Specific attention is paid to how they …

Intersectional Monopoly, Brianna Turgeon, Sarah Donley May 2023

Intersectional Monopoly, Brianna Turgeon, Sarah Donley

Research, Publications & Creative Work

Monopoly simulations are widely used in sociology classrooms to illustrate social inequality. These simulations have been critiqued as being one-dimensional and focusing too much on social class. Alternatively, scholars have developed Monopoly simulations that illustrate racial inequality, gender inequality, deviance, and intersectional experiences. Despite these improvements, Monopoly simulations conceptualize gender as a binary, focus solely on race, class, and gender, and do not include other intersectional identities. This simulation, Intersectional Monopoly, conceptualizes gender beyond the binary and includes more intersectional statuses such as disability, sexuality, immigration status, age, and religion. The purpose of the Intersectional Monopoly simulation is to …
