Leadership Coaching And The Myth Of The Rational Client, Raymond L. Forbes
Leadership Coaching And The Myth Of The Rational Client, Raymond L. Forbes
All Faculty and Staff Scholarship
This paper will address the issue of whether or not the clients of leadership coaches think and act in completely rational ways. It explores the question using a lens derived from the fields of Behavioral Economics and the Brain Sciences. Beginning with a look at the origins of the idea of rationality, this work proceeds to consider what’s really at issue, why it matters, and the possible trap posed by assuming strong client rationality. The paper concludes by posing options for resolution of the rationality myth by exploring the concepts of heuristics, bias, anchoring and priming. The paper concludes with …
Effects Of Procrastination And Intrinsic Motivation On Academic Performance And Life Satisfaction In Upper Division Courses, Koby Hines
2023 Symposium
Traditional procrastination has been defined as an intentional delay in starting an act, which often leads to a negative outcome. Procrastination has been shown to be related to poor academic performance. However, some have argued that one type of procrastination – active procrastination (AP) – can sometimes provide benefits, as individuals intentionally use time pressure to increase motivation. Active procrastination predict better academic performance, whereas passive procrastination (PP) – avoiding the task and trying to act as if there were no task looming – predict poorer academic performance.
The hypothesis for the current study were that higher AP would be …

Journal of International Women's Studies
During the War on Terror, when high rates of violence were occurring and schools were being forcefully torn down in Swat Valley of Pakistan, Malala Yousafzai fought for girls’ education rights. At just 17 years old, Malala Yousafzai has inspired people around the world with her passion and determination to make sure girls everywhere can get an education. When the Taliban tried to silence her, Malala answered their brutality with strength and resolve. Soon in the international media, she was acclaimed as a brave hero and later honored with a Nobel Prize. She received a mixed response for her efforts …
Eloquentia Perfecta: Performing Public Speaking To Enhance Scientific Presentation Skills Of Pharmacy Students, Marta J. Brooks, Trudi Wright
Eloquentia Perfecta: Performing Public Speaking To Enhance Scientific Presentation Skills Of Pharmacy Students, Marta J. Brooks, Trudi Wright
Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal
The Jesuits know the importance of words and their delivery, both on the page and orally, which is why they place heavy emphasis on “perfect eloquence,” or eloquentia perfecta. It was in the spirit of the adjustment of words with a “sensitivity to patients’ needs” that inspired a performance class of public speaking within the graduate pharmacy curriculum at Regis University. The courses described herein are part of the core curriculum within the School of Pharmacy. They place emphasis on not only understanding the science of what the students are communicating, but how they communicate this information. Students are …
Ignatian Leadership As A Mechanism For Human Liberation: “What’S Love Got To Do With It?”, Jennifer Tilghman-Havens
Ignatian Leadership As A Mechanism For Human Liberation: “What’S Love Got To Do With It?”, Jennifer Tilghman-Havens
Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal
Leadership that draws upon Ignatian wisdom has the potential to heal the divides which plague our local, national and global communities. This chapter weaves together elements of Ignatian Spirituality, critical leadership studies, feminist theory, and critical race concepts to propose a conception of Ignatian leadership that is liberatory for both leader and those being led. Drawing upon Ignatian sources as well as contemporary social science theorists, it illustrates the relevance of the Ignatian worldview for today’s context, as leaders engage critical consideration of race, gender and class in shaping a more just, humane, and sustainable world. It invites the reader …
At The Foot Of The Black Cross In America, Christopher Pramuk
At The Foot Of The Black Cross In America, Christopher Pramuk
Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal
The colloquy with Christ on the cross during the First Week of the Spiritual Exercises frames a consideration of the possibilities of, and obstacles to, white metanoia and solidarity across the color line in the face of egregious racial injustice. The author highlights the role of the imagination and desire in the birthing of empathy and in the merging of Christ crucified with the suffering of peoples of color in US society, even while insisting that the beauty and richness of “Black Lives” cannot be reduced to suffering. Drawing from Thomas Merton and Pope Francis, the author underscores the importance …

What Does The Ignatian Leader Do?, Michelle Wheatley D.Min.
Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal
Plenty of resources exist regarding the history of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), Ignatian spirituality, and Jesuit education. Yet many colleagues still wonder how best to apply Ignatian principles in their everyday work and leadership, especially in the context of adaptive challenges and heated disagreement. Therefore, this article seeks to build bridges between Jesuit wisdom and concrete personal, interpersonal, and organizational strategies, particularly by bringing foundational Jesuit resources into conversation with contemporary leadership theories and practices. With four focus areas born from study, relationships, prayer, and a desire to be of help, these reflections explore practical ways of answering the …
Pressures To Comply Or Defy: How Social Values Influence Perceptions Of Healthcare Workers As Villains, James K. Beggan, Scott T. Allison
Pressures To Comply Or Defy: How Social Values Influence Perceptions Of Healthcare Workers As Villains, James K. Beggan, Scott T. Allison
Heroism Science
During the Covid-19 pandemic, politicians, the media, and the public labeled frontline workers as heroes. The goal of this article is to examine how certain aspects of the Covid-19 pandemic—such as the nature of the Covid-19 virus, coupled with insufficient governmental and institutional responses—created a situation where it became possible for people to characterize healthcare workers as villains. This approach to medical professionals is rather novel in heroism studies and social sciences. A qualitative review of available data sources provided evidence that frontline healthcare workers were perceived negatively. Experiencing a lack of cooperation from patients and their families, healthcare personnel …

Predatory Helpfulness: A Replication (And Expansion) Study Examining Grooming And Recruitment Tactics In Sex Trafficking, Tatum E. Kenney
Predatory Helpfulness: A Replication (And Expansion) Study Examining Grooming And Recruitment Tactics In Sex Trafficking, Tatum E. Kenney
Student Theses
Sex trafficking, as defined by the Victims of Trafficking and Violence Protection Act (2000), occurs when a trafficker uses force, fraud or coercion to trap their target into exploitative commercial sex work. However, the fraudulent and coercive tactics traffickers use during the initial stages further obscure the exploitative nature of these relationships leading to trafficked women being victimized as criminals or simply overlooked. Basra et al. (2022) proposed a new framework—Predatory Helpfulness—to provide more cohesive terminology with which to organize, assess, and understand how traffickers form relationships with their intended victims. In this study, I used a mixed-methods …

Portfolio For Soci 346: Environmental Sociology, Gwendwr Meredith
UNL Faculty Course Portfolios
Environmental sociology, SOCI 346, is the study of how social systems interact with ecosystems. As such, it is a very broad course that is tasked with understanding complex and often controversial questions about the social causes, consequences, and responses to environmental disruption. In this teaching portfolio, I enumerate how I use a backward design for crafting assessments that cater to my specific teaching goals and learning objectives for the course. In the first stage of this process, I reflected on what learning outcomes I wished to achieve and determined that structuring the course in modules aligned with the learning objectives …

A Policy Proposal For Agricultural Data Governance, Ana Sofía Castellanos Santamaría
Dissertations and Theses
As the digital economy continues to grow and data becomes increasingly important, effective data governance is essential. A data governance framework enables the efficient management, sharing, and integration of data, resulting in better decision-making, increased productivity, and enhanced innovation across industries, including agriculture. However, the agricultural sector in the United States is lagging behind other industries in the adoption of effective data governance practices. Agricultural data governance presents a unique set of challenges due to the wide range of stakeholders involved and the ever-increasing volume of data generated by digital technologies in farming. One key challenge to achieving the benefits …

After COVID-19 hit, a new working method has appeared, the remote workers have an opportunity sitting at home attending zoom meetings and getting job done. While companies initially turned to remote work out of necessity, they soon realized that employees could remain productive while working from home. As the world began to reopen, many companies chose to continue with hybrid or fully remote working situations.
However, hybrid work has created challenges for maintaining a sense of collaboration and connection. Can this discomfort caused by telecommunication be solved by new tech involved? Designers are currently exploring various products and devices to …

Using Zines In The Classroom And How To Make A Single Page Booklet Zine, Anne Hays Adkison
Open Educational Resources
This OER includes an introductory essay, "Some Thoughts on Teaching with Zines in the College Classroom," which discusses three ways one could use zines. 1. teach about zines, 2, create a zine to share information with your students, 3. ask your students to make a zine. At the end of the essay, there are screenshots of the pages of a mini-zine that teach the reader (that's you!) how to make a zine out of a single sheet of paper. Finally, the last page is a printable zine, which you can fold up and cut with your newfound skills, and hand …

Effects Of Controllability And Language On Stigma Toward Mental Illness, Claire E. Shaver, Kevin M. Summers, Gina A. Paganini, E. Paige Lloyd
Undergraduate Theses, Capstones, and Recitals
Although past work consistently demonstrates perceivers stigmatize mental illness; which dimensions of stigma are relevant for specific conditions remains debated (Brohan et al., 2010). In the current work, we manipulated (between subjects) the controllability of fictitious mental illnesses and examined participants stigmatization across six dimensions (Fear, Help, Forcing Treatment, and Negative Emotions; Brown, 2008). We also examined whether effects of controllability were moderated by language (within subjects; person-first vs identity-first). We consistently found effects of controllability such that participants in the low (compared to high) condition responded with more fear, empathy, negative emotion, and intention to force treatment, but also …

Knowledge Management Practice And Use Of Information And Communication Technology: A Case Study Of Northwest University, Kano, Karimatu Isa Maisango Dr, Farida Sani Stores Dr
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Knowledge management has become a key factor for the success of all organizations. Information and communication technology (ICT) remains the only technology that facilitates information and knowledge sharing in any organization. Therefore, its use is prominent in any form of knowledge management initiative. The value of knowledge management is more when made available to the right people at the right time. Thus, knowledge sharing is facilitated through information and communication technology including computers, telephones, e-mail, databases, data mining systems, search engines, video conference and many more. The chapter investigates the practice of knowledge capture, sharing, storage and utilization among the …

A Grounded Theory Of Enterprising Mothers: Work-Life Balancing Of Women In Fiji, Candauda Arachchige Saliya
The Qualitative Report
Gender equality is recognized as crucial for firms’ growth. This paper attempts to investigate how and why do certain sociocultural and structural factors influence sustained gender inequality in Fiji? And then, using Grounded Theory (GT) method, it attempts to conceptualise how are Fijian working mothers striving to promote equality and diversity in the workplace, society, and family-life? By employing Grounded theory (GT) method, semi-structured interviews (32) were used to collect data from high-ranked officers in private and public sectors and, the interview transcripts were analysed using GT techniques: iterative and recursive processes of coding, categorising, theoretical sampling and constant comparison. …

The Qualitative Report
A political discussion has recently erupted over the return of migrant kayayei (head porters) from Northern Ghana. Return migrants were studied meagrely with regard to their reintegration process, skills acquired at their destinations, and chances for productive engagement. These chances allow the return migrants to pursue socially desirable goals. This study attempts to answer the questions pertaining to why migrants remain at home in terms of their experiences in the reintegration process and the reasons for re-migration. The purpose of this study was to explore how the socioeconomic environment of home communities aids the reintegration of return migrants from Ghana's …

Crossing Boundaries: Autoethnography Of Subjective Experiences During Meditation, Anna-Katharina Kothe, Stefanie Vochatzer, Christian Oesterle, Steffen Philipp Ruf
The Qualitative Report
In this autoethnographic quadrologue, the authors aim to show how meditation experiences defy verbalization in a qualitative research setting. This leads to the insight that an autoethnographic approach may be a much better fit for such an experience, where complex and inexpressible things can be found. This is especially the case since autoethnographic texts include and immerse the reader in the experience. Even though in the case of meditation this can hardly be achieved, this quadrologue aims at conveying some of the struggles and peculiarities of meditation practice. It focuses on the research process leading to the decision to employ …

A Gender Perspective Analysis Of Chinese Nationals’ Leisure Time Allocation: Family Life Cycle Versus Demographic Determinants, Jiaqi Luo, Songshan Huang, Ronghui Jiao, Zhiyong Li
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Family life cycle and gender have a great impact on people’s leisure time allocation. This study uses a nationwide survey to examine the influence of family life cycle and demographic characteristics on Chinese nationals’ leisure time allocation from a gender perspective. We found that Chinese nationals in the life stage of “family with infants” have the least leisure time among the study subjects. Men have more leisure time than women at any stage of the life cycle. Marriage has the greatest negative effect on women’s educational leisure (amateur learning, non-formal education, and reading) and men’s physical leisure (physical exercises and …

Background: The Million Veteran Program (MVP) participants represent 100 years of US history, including significant social and demographic changes over time. Our study assessed two aspects of the MVP: (i) longitudinal changes in population diversity and (ii) how these changes can be accounted for in genome-wide association studies (GWAS). To investigate these aspects, we divided MVP participants into five birth cohorts (N-range = 123,888 [born from 1943 to 1947] to 136,699 [born from 1948 to 1953]).
Results: Ancestry groups were defined by (i) HARE (harmonized ancestry and race/ethnicity) and (ii) a random-forest clustering approach using the 1000 Genomes Project and …

We assess performance and limitations of polygenic risk scores (PRSs) for multiple blood pressure (BP) phenotypes in diverse population groups. We compare "clumping-and-thresholding" (PRSice2) and LD-based (LDPred2) methods to construct PRSs from each of multiple GWAS, as well as multi-PRS approaches that sum PRSs with and without weights, including PRS-CSx. We use datasets from the MGB Biobank, TOPMed study, UK biobank, and from All of Us to train, assess, and validate PRSs in groups defined by self-reported race/ethnic background (Asian, Black, Hispanic/Latino, and White). For both SBP and DBP, the PRS-CSx based PRS, constructed as a weighted sum of PRSs …
Paperwork, Paradox, And Prn: Psychotropic Medication Deficiencies In Assisted Living, Sarah Dys, Paula Carder
Paperwork, Paradox, And Prn: Psychotropic Medication Deficiencies In Assisted Living, Sarah Dys, Paula Carder
Institute on Aging Publications
Individual state approaches to assisted living/residential care (AL/RC) licensing and oversight in the United States result in different practice standards and requirements, including psychotropic medication use. We examined 170 psychotropic medication deficiency citations issued to 152 Oregon AL/RC settings from 2015 to 2019. Applied thematic analysis resulted in the following themes: (1) documentation issues are primarily responsible for noncompliance, (2) unclear parameters place direct care workers in a role paradox, and (3) there is a persistent disconnect about when to seek qualified expertise before requesting psychotropic medications. AL/RC-specific mechanisms for medication prescription and administration are necessary to improve the structure …
