An Analysis Of Communication-Related Information And Services Offered To Parents Of Deaf Children In Puerto Rico, Brenda Belcher
An Analysis Of Communication-Related Information And Services Offered To Parents Of Deaf Children In Puerto Rico, Brenda Belcher
Capstone Collection
The period from birth to five years is a critical stage for human language acquisition, and inadequate access to language during this period can cause far-reaching negative effects. Young deaf and hard-of-hearing children face barriers to acquiring language through speaking and listening techniques, and their parents must make consequential decisions about what communicative strategies to pursue for their child. In Puerto Rico, information and support around communication approaches flow to parents from a variety of sources, including the Island’s local Early Hearing Detection & Intervention (EHDI) system, three dedicated schools for the deaf, and a variety of community-based organizations. This …

Journal of Human Performance in Extreme Environments
With a renewed impetus and appetite for human space exploration, both government-funded agencies and private companies are focusing on longer and farther crewed missions into the solar system. Such space missions rely on highly interdependent teams living and working together in isolated, confined, and extreme (ICE) environments. Understanding the behavioral patterns of teams in ICE environments is, thus, paramount for the future success of such missions. Due to the complexity of studying ICE teams, several researchers have called for methodological innovations to advance knowledge in this area. In the current research, a proof-of-concept methodological approach is introduced that provides a …

Beyond “Glittering Hope”: Introducing Max Stirner’S Unique Possibilities To Social Work, Erica Fonseca
School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations
Max Stirner (1806-1856) is an iconoclastic 19th-century philosopher who, despite a period of obscurity, has remained somewhat influential – particularly within segments of the anarchist milieu. This conceptual article maintains Stirner’s writing has something to offer social work thinking and practice. Using Stirner’s most influential work, The Ego and Its Own, I will present three of Stirner’s terms: Specters, The Creative Nothing, and Ownness. I conclude with a presentation of three “unique” prospects for social work that draws from Stirner’s anti-teleological and anti-foundationalist approach to liberation.

Living Apart After Adoption Or Guardianship: Perspectives Of Adoptive Parents And Guardians, Nancy Rolock, Amy E. Korsch-Williams, Chelsea Flanigan
Faculty Scholarship
Background: For children who are not reunified with their biological family members, the child welfare system promotes legal permanence through adoption or guardianship. The intent of adoption and guardianship is a safe home where children develop familial relationships that last a lifetime. However, issues may arise that result in children or youth living apart (LA) from their families after adoption or guardianship. In this study, LA is defined as a youth living outside the home after adoption or guardianship for two weeks or longer because the youth was receiving treatment in a residential or hospital setting, in a juvenile justice …

Nefarious And Disconcerting Motivations For Choosing A Correctional Officer Position: A Deviant Case Analysis, Alexander L. Burton, Cheryl Lero Jonson, Damon M. Petrich, William T. Miller
Criminal Justice & Criminology: Faculty Publications & Other Works
Most research finds that individuals are drawn to the correctional officer occupation for the pay and benefits or because it provides a new and exciting opportunity. However, these are not the only interests for choosing a correctional officer position. The current study draws on a sample of pre-service correctional officers surveyed prior to beginning their jobs (N = 673). In the spirit of the deviant case method, we focus on a subset of our sample who provided problematic motivations for becoming officers (n = 38). Using a thematic analytic approach, we identified five broad themes within this nefariously/disconcertingly …

Developing Novel Hypotheses Based On Unexpected Research Results -- A Review Of Data Analysis In Qualitative Research: Theorizing With Abductive Analysis, Mohammed Worku
The Qualitative Report
I found Stefan Timmermans and Iddo Tavory’s 2022 book, entitled Data Analysis in Qualitative Research: Theorizing with Abductive Analysis, to be an illustrative, to-the-point guide for qualitative researchers to analyze their studies promptly. In each section, the book brought illustrative examples to make the readers grasp the very idea of the book easily. Moreover, the book’s compilation of abductive arguments of data analysis other than the familiar ways of argument (i.e., deductive and inductive) made it interesting.

Dismantling Methodological Silos And Normative Confinements In Qualitative Research: A Shared Meal Of Knowledge In A Postqualitative Langar Space, Kanwarjeet Singh Dr., Jane Southcott Professor, Damien Lyons Associate Professor
The Qualitative Report
Building on qualitative approaches, post-qualitative is a turn of “becomings,” never reached but always moving. Turning from and beyond established qualitative traditions, in the post-qualitative, we pursue the leads of St. Pierre and Lather to push qualitative boundaries and offer Langar – a Sikh cultural practice of collective cooking and consumption of a shared meal as an alternative site of knowledge creation. As part, we harness the philosophical virtues of Langar and utilise its resistive prowess to put forward a methodological footprint that turns from the qualitative yardstick of rigor-tested legitimisation of knowledge. We navigate the ontological turns to locate …

She Is An Expert In This Research Field: The Signal Of Recent Publications' Relevance, Gil Zeevi, Osnat Mokryn
Northeast Journal of Complex Systems (NEJCS)
Assessing the expertise of researchers has garnered increased interest recently. This heightened focus arises from the growing emphasis on interdisciplinary science and the subsequent need to form expert teams. When forming these teams, the coordinators need to assess expertise in fields that are often very different from theirs. The conventional reliance on signals of success, prestige, and academic impact can unintentionally perpetuate biases within the assessment process. This traditional approach favors senior researchers and those affiliated with prestigious institutions, potentially overlooking talented individuals from underrepresented backgrounds or institutions. This paper addresses the challenge of determining expertise by proposing a methodology …

Teaching Anti-Oppressive Lifespan Development Online Through A Cultural And Contextual Lens, Karen M. Roller, Kelly Coker
Journal of Technology in Counselor Education and Supervision
Lifespan Development is a required content area for both CACREP accreditation and licensure boards. Historically centered theories of development are born out of work and research conducted by Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, and Democratic (WEIRD) theorists, so therefore are presented to students through a very narrow and biased cultural lens, often with oppressive implications. Implementing innovative, interactive, culture- and context-promoting inclusive strategies in synchronous and asynchronous learning environments is both relevant and necessary for future counselors to consider how their integration of updated lifespan development theories informs their clinical practice. This article presents inclusive applications that leverage online relational strategies …

Lightning Talk: The Cruel Optimism In Becoming A Librarian, Nicole Murph
Lightning Talk: The Cruel Optimism In Becoming A Librarian, Nicole Murph
POC in LIS Summit
Librarianship tends to be presented from an optimistic view, and although some of that optimism is true, the reality of becoming a librarian can be a form of cruel optimism. Dylan Burns and Hailley Fargo (2019) used Lauren Berlant’s (2011) cruel optimism to explore the emotional experiences involved in the promise of becoming a librarian, yet it is “…out of reach for nearly a third of LIS graduates” (Burns & Fargo, 2019). Transitioning to librarianship is a big step especially for those experiencing a mid-career transition. The time, cost(s), and emotional energy involved include going back to school, gaining experience …

Lightning Talk: Resisting The Institutionalization Of Deia: Border Thinking And Academic Librarianship, Blanca Garcia-Barron
POC in LIS Summit
As BIPOC library workers, we often have a complicated relationship to DEIA work within our respective institutions. Some of us embrace it. Some of us reject it, and others remain cautious but continue to contribute to it. Whatever our relationship is to DEIA, all our perspectives and experiences are valid. Border Thinking as a concept, formed by Gloria Anzaldua and later adopted and developed further by decolonial scholars like Walter Mignolo, highlights the knowledge produced outside of colonial systems. Border Thinking not only legitimizes this knowledge, but lived experience, as well. This lightning talk explores the framework of Border Thinking …
