Innovation Districts: Contributing Factors For Cities’ Prosperity, Equity Implications, And Planning Policy Solutions In Response To Placelessness, Ladan Mozaffarian
Innovation Districts: Contributing Factors For Cities’ Prosperity, Equity Implications, And Planning Policy Solutions In Response To Placelessness, Ladan Mozaffarian
Public Affairs Dissertations - Archive
Innovation is one of the most critical determinants of future success for cities. Urban policymakers and planners have developed a great interest in “innovation districts” as an impactful factor in enhancing cities' economic competitiveness and productivity. This planning policy has become very attractive to urban planners, urban economy specialists, and policymakers to the point that every city in the United States is trying to develop its version of an innovation district. Simultaneously, urban scholars have developed great attention to the most critical factors shaping innovation districts and affecting their prosperity. The literature identifies factors such as spatial clustering, mixed land …
Fail To Plan, Plan To Fail: The Effects Of Forecasting Valence On Creativity, Rylee Marie Linhardt
Fail To Plan, Plan To Fail: The Effects Of Forecasting Valence On Creativity, Rylee Marie Linhardt
Psychology Theses - Archive
Forecasting is a central component of evaluating creative ideas for their success. Little is known, however, about variables that influence the effectiveness of predicting outcomes while evaluating creative ideas. Previous literature has shown that forecasting prior to implementation improves the creativity of final solutions and vision statements (e.g., Byrne, Shipman, & Mumford, 2010; Dailey & Mumford, 2006; Lonergan, Scott, & Mumford, 2004). The present effort empirically addresses how individuals forecast and why it leads to better creative performance. A total of 146 participants were asked to forecast positive or negative outcomes and subsequently develop an implementation plan for a creative …
Addressing The Information Crisis: Understanding The Relationships Between Information Choices And Health And Academic Outcomes, Amber L. Morgan
Addressing The Information Crisis: Understanding The Relationships Between Information Choices And Health And Academic Outcomes, Amber L. Morgan
Psychology Theses - Archive
In today’s society, the prevalence of the “share first, question later” mentality has become a norm. However, this approach to information can have severe consequences when it comes to information seeking behaviors, and health and academic outcomes. Previous research has already illustrated that people are not very good at evaluating information, they prefer to surround themselves with confirming viewpoints, and accepting health misinformation can adversely affect one’s health. Building upon this knowledge, the current study aimed to investigate whether people have preferences in the information they use and their potential implications for health and academic outcomes. Specifically, it was examined …

Diet By Genomic Interactions In Determining Metabolic Traits And Profiles On Glucose Metabolism Among Mexican Americans In Starr County, Texas, Shinhye Chung
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Worsening glycemia, prediabetes and diabetes, is one of the essential diseases in public health, considering their high prevalence, the enormous impact on multiple organs, and the economic burden on the community. Various factors can affect the pathogenesis of worsening glycemia, and this study focused on macronutrient intake, genes, and their interactions with metabolome data. 616 self-reported Mexican American participants in Starr County were recruited with informed consent. 308 identified and 2,471 unidentified metabolites were used for the analysis, and all the metabolites were inverse normalized with less than half of the missing rate. Each of the five glycemic and lipid …
Economic And Policy Determinants Of National Abortion Rates: A Cross-National Study, Olufunke Akiyode
Economic And Policy Determinants Of National Abortion Rates: A Cross-National Study, Olufunke Akiyode
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Abortion is as old as humanity and exists in all cultures. The number and rate of abortions differ among countries and regions of the world. Some determinants of abortion may include economic indicators and policy restrictiveness. This study analyzes the economic and policy determinants of abortion by evaluating the association of income and policy on abortion rates. It uses a panel data regression to examine the association between income, Gini Coefficient and abortion rates. Gini Coefficient measures income inequality, and GNI represents a country’s income. Publicly available longitudinal data obtained from the World Bank, United Nations, United Nations Population Development …

Denim Quality Innovation And Theory, Simeon Smith
Denim Quality Innovation And Theory, Simeon Smith
Apparel Merchandising and Product Development Undergraduate Honors Theses
Quality and its place with consumers, primarily university students, is often ignored when shopping for clothing. The aim of this creative project and accompanied research is to help answer why that is. This is needed as the denim industry weighs heavily on being one of the textile and clothing industries’ worst polluters. The rise of scaled fashion now produces an excess of garments. The purpose of this study is to create a high-quality garment and supplement it with a survey, polling students about their knowledge of quality. The survey participants, who were university students in the apparel major, had experience …
Converging And Diverging Outcomes Of Posttraumatic Growth (Ptg) And Posttraumatic Depreciation (Ptd) In Combat Veterans: A Case Study, Dayton Williams
Converging And Diverging Outcomes Of Posttraumatic Growth (Ptg) And Posttraumatic Depreciation (Ptd) In Combat Veterans: A Case Study, Dayton Williams
Social Work Theses - Archive
Upon examining combat veterans’ psychological responses to combat-related trauma, two emerged for consideration: posttraumatic growth (PTG) through making meaning out of a traumatic experience and a positive outcome or change, and posttraumatic depreciation (PTD) an inability to make meaning of a traumatic experience and a negative outcome or change. Understanding how PTG and PTD converge, diverge, and impact an individual is crucial in supporting a veteran’s journey to health and well-being. A comparative study of the cases of two Marine combat veterans who served during OEF/OIF offers numerous similarities: both are in the millennial cohort; both are part of a …

This study investigates the use of small unoccupied aerial systems (sUAS) as a new remote sensing tool to identify and track the spatial distribution of wrack on coastal tidal marsh systems. We used sUAS to map the wrack movement in a Spartina alterniflora-dominated salt marsh monthly for one year including before and after Hurricane Isaias that brought strong winds, rain, and storm surge to the area of interest in August 2020. Flight parameters for each data collection mission were held constant including collection only during low tide. Wrack was visually identified and digitized in a GIS using every mission orthomosaic …

Is Civilization A Good Thing?, David Wilkinson
Is Civilization A Good Thing?, David Wilkinson
Comparative Civilizations Review
How do we feel about “Civilization”? What emotions does the idea of “civilization” evoke from us? Why are these emotions attached to that idea? In more technical terms, what are the “connotations” of “civilization”? Laudatory or derogatory? And why do we feel the way we feel about it? What makes us welcome civilization, fear it, praise it or shun it?
The Possibility Of A Global Civilization, Robert Elliott Allinson
The Possibility Of A Global Civilization, Robert Elliott Allinson
Comparative Civilizations Review
This article inquires into the question of what is civilization. It considers that a sine qua non of a civilization is a non-violent culture. It investigates the concept of violence and extends the concept to cover examples of citizens who live in conditions of poverty, ill health, lack of food, lack of education, lack of adequate housing, and inadequate living conditions. The argument in the article is that a civilization that allows such conditions to exist perpetrates violence upon its citizens and therefore does not deserve the appellation, ‘civilization.’ Those citizens who do not protest against such violence are not …
The Theoretical Status Of The Concept Of Civilization, Roger W. Wescott
The Theoretical Status Of The Concept Of Civilization, Roger W. Wescott
Comparative Civilizations Review
This paper may be regarded as an effort to answer some questions concerning the conceptualization of civilization.
1. Whether or not concepts are essentially verbal, is the concept of civilization primarily denotative (referential) or connotative (emotive) in meaning?
2. If the concept of civilization is primarily emotive, is its emotive force predominantly laudatory or derogatory in effect?
3. When the concept of civilization is derogatory, is it decadence or outdatedness that is primarily derogated?
4. If the concept of civilization is primarily denotative, is its denotation primarily abstract (referring to culture and associated mentifacts) or primarily concrete (referring to people …
Monitoring Wise Civilization By Creating An Index, Andrew Targowski
Monitoring Wise Civilization By Creating An Index, Andrew Targowski
Comparative Civilizations Review
The Wise Civilization Index will assess how wise we are in developing and living in a sustainable civilization.
Recently, people have started to worry about the state of the climate. This has been reflected in the finding that the climate temperature should be kept to a growth of below two degrees Celsius by 2100 to save our species from a slow death (The Paris Agreement of 2015). After all, raising the human body temperature by two degrees threatens illness and even death by four degrees. The same (relatively) can be done with Earth. However, apart from the climate, the problem …
Book Review: Erich S. Gruen. Cultural Identity In The Ancient Mediterranean, John Berteaux
Book Review: Erich S. Gruen. Cultural Identity In The Ancient Mediterranean, John Berteaux
Comparative Civilizations Review
Erich S. Gruen’s edited collection Cultural Identity in the Ancient Mediterranean first appeared in 2011. I feel the significance of this collection is that it teases out and asks us to assess unreflective assumptions that inform not only our vision of the past, but also our grasp of present-day collective identities. Early on Gruen reports that while moderns tend to focus on difference, dissimilarity, or contrast when distinguishing cultures, in the eight sections of this text scholars identify and investigate complex connections that resulted in the cultural identities we associate with the ancient Mediterranean world. The essence of Gruen’s argument …

Book Review: Michael Farmer. An Atlas Of The Tibetan Plateau. Volume 50 In Brill’S Tibetan Studies Library Series, Constance Wilkinson
Comparative Civilizations Review
An Atlas of the Tibetan Plateau is a masterful melding of science and art created by British architect and cartographer Michael Farmer. Based on extensive contemporary data painstakingly woven from satellite imagery, the intrepid and apparently indefatigable Mr. Farmer has, over decades, produced a unique and indispensable reference work
The Mything Link: Why Sacred Storytelling Is A Key Human Survival Strategy, Ken Baskin
The Mything Link: Why Sacred Storytelling Is A Key Human Survival Strategy, Ken Baskin
Comparative Civilizations Review
For several decades, societies across the globe have faced a real existential threat with challenges such as global warming. Yet no one in the elite has been able to do anything to improve conditions. We seem to be trapped in the kind of situation that Einstein described when he discussed problems that can’t be solved with the logic that created them.
Buber The Radical Egalitarian And Buber And Psychology, Kenneth Feigenbaum
Buber The Radical Egalitarian And Buber And Psychology, Kenneth Feigenbaum
Comparative Civilizations Review
My first iteration for this paper was to present Martin Buber in the context of radical politics in Germany and to focus upon his relationship to the anarchist Gustav Landauer. After a brief search, I found too few sources that were easily accessible from here in the United States, so as part of this presentation I situate Buber in the radical politics extant mostly during his time in Germany and in Berlin. I focus here on Buber’s psychology but include several intellectual side trips visiting aspects of Buber’s philosophy and his politics. I cannot separate them in discussing Buber and …
The Cost Of Public Mistrust: The Indirect Impact Of Mass Shootings On Home Values, Austin Dey
The Cost Of Public Mistrust: The Indirect Impact Of Mass Shootings On Home Values, Austin Dey
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines how mass shootings indirectly impact residential home values across the United States. I hand-collected data on internet search interests around 15 mass shooting events from 2012 to 2019 to measure public concern over mass shootings. Using an event study, I estimate the causal effects of shootings on home values in outlying areas over three years. The results indicate a significant negative relationship between mass shootings and home values two years after an event. This thesis demonstrates that the consequences of mass shootings are not confined to affected areas but have lasting nationwide impacts that reduce economic outcomes …
Perspectives On Data For Good: The Emergence Of Embodied Data Discourses, Kimberly M. Gardner
Perspectives On Data For Good: The Emergence Of Embodied Data Discourses, Kimberly M. Gardner
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
In policy sciences, data have traditionally been a tool used by scientists and technocrats to guide state policy. Boundaries around what counts as data generally fall along traditional understandings that data are neutral, objective, and abstracted from individual bodies and experiences. Unfortunately, this understanding of data has a history of perpetuating harmful social hierarchies and, especially in the era of “big data”, mirroring our racial and gendered prejudices (Kitchin, 2014). More recently, however, data have been claimed as a tool by a different kind of actor operating in a unique environment. These new actors, such as some police officers and …
Using Terrestrial Laser Scanning To Estimate Canopy Structure In Peatland Conifers Under A Climate Manipulation, Angela D. Seibert
Using Terrestrial Laser Scanning To Estimate Canopy Structure In Peatland Conifers Under A Climate Manipulation, Angela D. Seibert
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Northern peatlands are major terrestrial carbon sinks, storing 415 ± 150 Gt of carbon. The composition of peatland vegetation affects this carbon storage capacity, and thus quantifying the vegetation helps to constrain uncertainty in peatland carbon storage estimates. Ground layer vegetation, such as Sphagnum sp. moss contributes greatly to carbon storage capacity. In forested peatlands, the tree canopy structure directly influences peatland solar insolation, soil temperature, and water table levels. Each of these factors impacts the ground layer vegetation. Currently, there is uncertainty about how the peatland tree canopy structure is influenced by elevated levels of carbon dioxide (CO2 …
The Role Of Justice In Colombia’S Renewable Energy Transition: Wind Energy Development In Wayúu Territory, Adriana P. Fajardo Mazorra
The Role Of Justice In Colombia’S Renewable Energy Transition: Wind Energy Development In Wayúu Territory, Adriana P. Fajardo Mazorra
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
Amidst the defining issue of our time – climate change – the world faces an imperative to shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy, aligning with the 2015 Paris Agreement goals. This global focus on low-carbon energy infrastructure has brought forth local socio-environmental conflicts, and at the heart of this transition lies La Guajira, a peninsula in northern Colombia, home to the indigenous Wayúu people and abundant wind energy resources. This research delves into the critical role of energy justice as large-scale wind energy projects expand in La Guajira. By examining the struggles faced by the Wayúu people provoked by …

Working Against Racism Through Cross Institutional Communities Of Practice, Aaliyah Baker, Marisol Morales, Sharyn Lowenstein, John Reiff
Books and Book Chapters by University of Dayton Faculty
This chapter explores the evolution of three Campus Compact anti-racism communities of practice (COPs) to foster critical conversations about race and racism in our higher education community-engaged work. The COPs were created and cofacilitated by two BIPOC (African American and Afro-Puerto Rican) and two white (New York Jewish, German/English, Irish) people. Aaliyah, Marisol, Sharyn, and John served as facilitators of the first two COPs, with Nuala Boyle replacing Sharyn for the third. We invited faculty and staff in higher education institutions across the country to apply to participate. A large number of higher education professionals responded to the call, demonstrating …
A Mixed Methods Examination Of First Year College Students: The Impact Of Ethnic Studies On Post-Secondary Education Experiences, Sherry Bell
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Across the United States, fewer high school students are enrolling in university and completing university. Scholars have suggested that ethnic studies may positively influence student engagement and potentially increase university enrollment. This dissertation will discuss the literature related to ethnic studies and critical race theory in relation to frameworks that have been positively associated with student retention. The study described in this dissertation explored if ethnic studies taken prior to attending university is related to positive student experiences during university. The aims of the study were to (1) test the relationship between ethnic studies and positive student experiences (i.e., critical …
Transnational Actions, Domestic Outcomes: How Diasporas Effect Change In Their Countries Of Origin, Nadia Eldemerdash
Transnational Actions, Domestic Outcomes: How Diasporas Effect Change In Their Countries Of Origin, Nadia Eldemerdash
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Over the last 30 years, a growing body of research in political science has studied migration and transnationalism as complex political phenomena that have far-reaching consequences on the politics and societies of both sending and receiving countries. How migrants themselves experience migration and how those experiences are transferred to family and friends they leave in their country of origin has political consequences. Some scholars have argued that migration can induce or contribute to the democratization of sending countries through both financial and social processes, which can occur at the state and individual levels. Focusing on the effects of migration on …
