The Impact Of Acculturative Stress On Internalizing Problems Among Racially And Ethnically Minoritized Adolescents And Young Adults In The U.S. : A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Petty Tineo
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Due to demographic changes of the U.S. population in the past few decades, more attention has been placed on understanding the sociocultural factors that have an impact on racially and ethnically minoritized (REM) groups and mental health outcomes. One of the factors that has been gaining increased attention in the past few years is acculturative stress. Acculturative stress is associated with various mental health outcomes, such as depression, anxiety, psychological distress, and suicide ideation (SI). However, the magnitude of this association remains unclear. A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted to provide a comprehensive review of the impact of acculturative …
An Examination Of Faith And Faith-Based Practices On Help-Seeking Behaviors Among Afro-Caribbean Immigrants In The United States, Shanta K. Pamphile
An Examination Of Faith And Faith-Based Practices On Help-Seeking Behaviors Among Afro-Caribbean Immigrants In The United States, Shanta K. Pamphile
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
This dissertation presents the findings of a qualitative study exploring the negotiation of faith among Afro-Caribbean immigrants regarding their decision to seek support with the stress of adjusting to the United States. The analysis revealed that Afro-Caribbean immigrants experience high-stress levels as they pursue economic, professional and social advancement in the United States. The persistence of these stressors, with long-lasting residual effects, warrants psychological support. Migrants, although relying heavily on their faith for support with this stress, are willing to seek support. However, they must work through worries of caution and trust and need to discern whether seeking support may …
A Qualitative Study Exploring The Lived Experiences Of At-Risk College Students Who Become Honors Students, Billie June Bailey
A Qualitative Study Exploring The Lived Experiences Of At-Risk College Students Who Become Honors Students, Billie June Bailey
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
This qualitative study explores the lived experiences of at-risk college students who become honors students. There is much quantitative research on the factors that influence or predict the path of at-risk students becoming honors students. What is less well established in literature is what personal transformation occurs in the lives of students placed at-risk who go on to become honors students. While many pre-freshman programs have the strategies to provide individual opportunity and increase economic prosperity by producing college graduates, it is less obvious what individual students do in their journey moving from underprepared to becoming an honors student. In …
Evolution Of Women’S Consciousness: Toward Integral Consciousness, Katherine T. Ziemke
Evolution Of Women’S Consciousness: Toward Integral Consciousness, Katherine T. Ziemke
Journal of Conscious Evolution
This article presents research materials which demonstrate historical consciousness for women of ancient European descent, the cultural heritage of the author. Awareness is examined from various historical angles in a transdisciplinary approach to the work. I explore the possibility that women’s historical and continued oppression may be a sign of the disintegration of the mental and a re-emergence of the integral structure of consciousness. A broad examination of women’s historical roles and corresponding thought shows how ancient consciousness may be used to accelerate a path toward integral consciousness today. Finally, this essay proposes that women’s historical consciousness and primordial memories …
A Postmortem Analysis Of Covid-19 Ensemble Forecasts: Forward Or Sticky Information?, Jinman Pang
A Postmortem Analysis Of Covid-19 Ensemble Forecasts: Forward Or Sticky Information?, Jinman Pang
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This study conducts a postmortem analysis to evaluate the overall forecasting performance of a large number of pandemic transmission models for COVID-19 mortality. For a comprehensive accuracy analysis, we selected thirty-nine prolific forecasting models, which reported continuously national-level weekly incident death forecasts at least fifty times at four weekly horizons between June 8, 2020, and May 28, 2022. We found that the forecasting performance of individual models varies over target weeks and horizons, even after adjusting for time-varying forecast difficulty. Most individual models predicted the turning points with a lag, and very few models excelled at predicting the troughs and …
How The Concept Of Race And Ethnicity Played An Integral Role In The Sri Lanka Civil War From A Sociological Perspective, Pasan Vinura Joseph De Silva
How The Concept Of Race And Ethnicity Played An Integral Role In The Sri Lanka Civil War From A Sociological Perspective, Pasan Vinura Joseph De Silva
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The social constructs of race and ethnicity played a pivotal role in the Sri Lankan Civil War as the intercommunal violence between the Sinhalese and Tamil groups was attributed to discriminatory policies. However, there is a lack of literature from published academic sources and archival/governmental data pertaining to the variables of race and ethnicity from a sociological perspective. The concept of race and ethnicity are an integral component of social conflict that identifies positions through self-consciousness as a cultural, religious, and linguistic community. This thesis utilizes historical research through qualitative secondary data sources to analyze how racial and ethnic inequities …
The Role Of Community-Based Organizations In The Mental Health Or Wellbeing And The Media Use In Receiving Social Support Among Asian International Students, Yunmi Lee
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
One of the prominent barriers which hinder international students’ integration into their new communities is acculturative stress. Social support is one of the resources which people can utilize to cope with stress. Community-based organizations (CBOs) can be used as sources of social support for international students who do not have strong social ties near them. In this study, how CBOs can play a role as sources of social support and as a resource to cope with stress among Asian international students was investigated. In addition, media use in receiving social support was explored. The present study used mixed methods with …
A Broader And Deeper Foundation: The Alternative Vision Of James Wilson's Political Philosophy, David Ferkaluk
A Broader And Deeper Foundation: The Alternative Vision Of James Wilson's Political Philosophy, David Ferkaluk
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This dissertation rediscovers the forgotten political philosophy of founding father James Wilson, revealing its alternative vision for American politics. Wilson interpreted popular sovereignty as both a political and moral principle. Borrowing heavily from Scottish philosopher Thomas Reid, Wilson adapted Reidian epistemology, philosophical psychology, and moral science to explain how “the people” acted simultaneously as political actors and moral agents. The people acted with the goal of achieving their happiness, which Wilson defined as moral excellence. With his moral definition of happiness, Wilson intentionally linked the Declaration of Independence with the US Constitution, understanding the latter as building on the foundation …

Volunteer Fire Departments Confront A Challenge: Socializing For Trust While Diversifying For Survival, Alison Hart Romain
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This qualitative study that analyzed data from interviews, observations, texts, and artifacts sought to answer the following questions: What qualities and characteristics are most valued in HROs such as fire departments? How are bonding, trust, and cohesion observably accomplished in high reliability organizations (HROs) such as fire departments? How do informal communicative practices unique to fire departments participate in this accomplishment at interpersonal and organizational levels? How do these informal communicative practices contribute to fostering diversity or perpetuating exclusion? The results of the study were that fitting in socially was a key determinant of successful assimilation. Additionally, as HROs, fire …
Constructing, Integrating, And Testing The Choice Set For Models Of Offender Decision-Making, Matthew Kijowski
Constructing, Integrating, And Testing The Choice Set For Models Of Offender Decision-Making, Matthew Kijowski
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Models of offender decision-making are premised on a rational actor weighing the perceived options within their choice set. One will choose to engage in a behavioral option that provides them with the greatest benefits and fewest costs as compared to the other perceived options. Even though the choice set is the foundation from which offender decision-making is built, criminologists, and offender decision-making scholars specifically, have assumed the choice set without directly measuring it. Without appraising the choice set, a multi-step process of decision-making is collapsed into a single step. This precludes an understanding of the composition of the choice set, …
The Hidden Curriculum In Social Work Graduate Programs: Implications For Professional Socialization And Practice, Mette Christiansen
The Hidden Curriculum In Social Work Graduate Programs: Implications For Professional Socialization And Practice, Mette Christiansen
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The professional socialization of master level social work students is an area of evolving research, and studies have found inconsistent results. Lack of empirical knowledge leaves the social work profession vulnerable to assumptions about the preparation of its practitioners and to unintentional socialization that might contradict the mission of social work. Using the framework of the hidden curriculum, i.e., unstated norms and values transmitted to students, sheds light on how faculty, staff, peers, and the implicit practices in MSW education influence students’ socialization. Twenty-second year MSW students from three different MSW programs participated in focus groups during their second year …
Barking Up The Wrong Need: How Basic Psychological Need Satisfaction At And Outside Of Work Interact To Influence Work Recovery, Matthew Hanson
Barking Up The Wrong Need: How Basic Psychological Need Satisfaction At And Outside Of Work Interact To Influence Work Recovery, Matthew Hanson
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Considering the myriad harmful consequences that arise when people are unable to sufficiently recover from work, further research into ways in which recovery can be promoted is valuable for individuals and organizations alike. Sufficient recovery from work not only depends on how much time people spend away from work. Indeed, how they spend that time is also important. Drawing upon Self-Determination Theory, the Conservation of Resources Theory, and Effort-Recovery Theory, I hypothesized that satisfying basic psychological needs outside of work that correspond with basic psychological needs that are less satisfied at work will make work recovery more efficient. I tested …
Right Frame, Right Time: A Study Of Anti-American Military Base Protests In East Asia, Charmaine N. Willis
Right Frame, Right Time: A Study Of Anti-American Military Base Protests In East Asia, Charmaine N. Willis
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Why do anti-US-military protests occur in some host communities but not others? Using six cases in Japan, South Korea, and the Philippines, this project argues that a key explanatory factor in anti-US-military movement variability is the extent to which activists’ frames, or interpretations of an issue, resonate with the host community or nation. The concept of frame resonance reflects the interplay between framing by social movement leaders and the political opportunity structure (including framing by the US and host nation governments), which influences frames’ effectiveness at mobilizing potential protesters. Drawing on interviews, participant observation, protest data and data, and various …

Naming And Blaming Automated Decision-Making Systems: Analysis Of Contesting Algorithmic Injustice, Esra Gules-Guctas
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This dissertation is centrally concerned with understanding how algorithmic harms evolve into legal claims in the context of automated public benefits determinations. Data collection consists of multiple source of data including semi-structured in-depth interviews, court opinions, expert witness reports, deposition transcripts, and investigative news reports. Analysis was conducted in parallel with data collection through iterative process of open coding. Results indicate that algorithmic errors are not merely technical glitches, they lead to cascading harms. In-depth analysis of algorithmic errors identified in legal cases reveals the type of errors that top-down formal audit mechanisms fail to capture. As statistical tools automated systems …

Understanding Factors Influencing Electric Vehicle Adoption: Evidence From Panel Data Analysis, Ryker Brian
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
This paper investigates the factors influencing the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) using panel data from California. The analysis employs a panel data model with within effects to examine the relationship between EV adoption rates and various socio-economic factors. The continued analysis gives out-of-sample forecasted results for the 4 counties with the highest share of electric vehicles registered in 2021. Additionally, the paper explores the influence of supply-side issues and complementary infrastructure on EV adoption. An introduction to Hidden Markov Methods is then given as the next step in the research.

Detecting changes in land cover is a critical task in remote sensing image interpretation, with particular significance placed on accurately determining the boundaries of lakes. Lake boundaries are closely tied to land resources, and any alterations can have substantial implications for the surrounding environment and ecosystem. This paper introduces an innovative end-to-end model that combines U-Net and spatial transformation network (STN) to predict changes in lake boundaries and investigate the evolution of the Lake Urmia boundary. The proposed approach involves pre-processing annual panoramic remote sensing images of Lake Urmia, obtained from 1996 to 2014 through Google Earth Pro Version 7.3 …

The purpose of this study is to employ a remote sensing reconnaissance survey based on optimal segmentation parameters and an object-oriented random forest approach to the identification of possible terrestrial impact craters from the global 30-m resolution SRTM DEM. A dataset consisting of 94 confirmed and well-preserved terrestrial impact craters, 104 volcanic calderas, and 124 valleys were extracted from real-world surface features. For craters with different sizes, eight optimal scale parameters from 80 to 3000 have been identified using multi-resolution segmentation, where the scale parameters have a positive correlation (R2 = 0.78) with the diameters of craters. The object-oriented random …

Material Consumption Of An 18th-Century Middling Urban Craftsman In Boston, Massachusetts, Lauryn E. Sharp
Graduate Masters Theses
This thesis studies how Caleb Parker, a blacksmith and craftsman who lived in the early- to mid-18th century, viewed and utilized refinement and genteel behaviors using the glass and ceramic artifacts recovered from a privy at his home at 23 Unity Street in Boston’s North End. Background research explores the concept of “partible refinement,” which speaks to the notion that the “middling sorts'' at this time, including craftspeople like Caleb Parker, had the agency to selectively use different components of refined gentility according to their personal consumer choice and tastes. This resulted in middling sorts incorporating both traditional and modern …

During the nineteenth century, the northern slope of Boston’s Beacon Hill neighborhood was home to a free African American community. Central to the Beacon Hill neighborhood was the African Meeting House, which operated as a Baptist church, home, school, and meeting space for Black community members. Archaeological investigations have revealed the story of not just the African Meeting House, but the surrounding vicinity and larger community. The African Meeting House collection provides a case study to understand the ways racism, sexism, and classism impacted the quotidian lives of Black women in freedom. Using Black feminism as a theoretical framework, this …

This research investigates enslaved peoples’ economic engagement in the Shenandoah Valley during the first half of the 19th century. In 2017, archaeologists excavated two features at the Belle Grove enslaved quarters in Middletown, Virginia— a root cellar and subfloor pit that were filled in when a log cabin burned down. The preservation of the macrobotanicals has allowed for an in-depth analysis of the plants with which enslaved individuals engaged and the relationship between plant acquisition and enslaved people’s regional formal economic involvement at a 19th-century plantation in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. These data sets have also allowed for an …

“Oh, That’S For Girls”: Barriers To Men’S Enrollment In College Sex Education Courses, Savannah Burke
“Oh, That’S For Girls”: Barriers To Men’S Enrollment In College Sex Education Courses, Savannah Burke
All Theses
American teens have diverse experiences with sex education that may leave some inadequately prepared for navigating their sexuality as emerging adults. For those who seek higher education, college-level sex education classes could fill this void. Yet, there is a notable gender gap in enrollment in college-level sex education classes across the US, with men being reluctant to taking these courses. Thus, it is important to understand what barriers prevent men from taking these classes. This study explores the roles that masculine ideology plays in dissuading men from enrolling in college-level sex education courses. Interviews with 17 masculine-identified college students who …

The overwhelming majority of existing literature on the effects of age on judicial sentence decision-making focuses on juveniles (ages 18 and below) and older adults. This paper focuses on offenders between the ages of 18-29, who fall legally outside the definition of juvenile, yet do not have the full brain development or clinical maturity of an adult to provide knowledge of sentencing outcomes for different populations and a well-rounded review and critique of judicial sentence decision-making (Johnson, Blum, & Giedd, 2009). Using a series of logistic regression analyses on the Pennsylvania Commission Sentencing (PCS) data from 2001 to 2018, I …

Companies face the challenge of determining the return on investment of premium paper packaging features, such as substrate thickness and finishing options. If companies can better understand how consumers perceive “premium,” they could channel their focus on specific design elements and maximize their returns (Dwivedi & Nayeem, 2018). Touch is a critical factor in driving consumer behavior and purchase decisions and influencing trust between brands and consumers (Krishna et al. 2017). While previous studies have explored the impact of design elements like size, shape, color, and font on consumer behavior, this research investigates the influence of touch, substrate, print finishes …

The importance of social bonds in supporting those in substance use recovery is illustrious through applications of social bonding theory. However, the effect of COVID-19 restrictions on these essential relationships has not been widely studied. The initial survey instrument studying social support, religious support, and substance use patterns before, during, and after COVID-19 was met with methodological difficulty in reaching the target population through email. This instrument was adapted into a semi-structured interview guide and methodology evolved to include participation either in-person or over Zoom. Through 14 in-depth interviews with people in substance use recovery programs, themes of isolation, peer …
