Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine Faculty Papers
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Racial disparities have been documented in care of many respiratory diseases but little is known about the impact of race on the treatment of interstitial lung diseases. The purpose of this study was to determine how race and ethnicity influence treatment of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.
METHODS: Adults with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (>18 years) were identified using TriNetX database and paired-wised comparisons were performed for antifibrotic treatment among White, Black, Hispanic and Asian patients. Mortality of treated and untreated IPF patients was compared after propensity score matching for age, sex, nicotine dependence, oxygen dependence and predicted FVC. …
Islamophobia: The Effect Of Personal Interaction And The Media On Arab Prejudice In Spain, Isabelle Stoddard
Islamophobia: The Effect Of Personal Interaction And The Media On Arab Prejudice In Spain, Isabelle Stoddard
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Throughout the western world, prejudice toward Arabs continues to be a significant issue. As the migration of Arabs into Spain continues, it is important to understand the various influences on Arab prejudice. The purpose of this thesis is to examine and analyze the influence of personal interactions and media consumption on Arab prejudice in Spain. To do so, I address several questions: does personal contact significantly change attitudes and language sentiments toward Arabs in Spain? Does the type of media consumption significantly change attitudes and language sentiments toward Arabs? To what extent do personal contact and media consumption jointly affect …

Vanguards Of Change In The "Georgia Of The North": Youth Activism In The New Jersey Civil Rights Movement, 1935-1955, A Digital History Project, Emily Peterson
Undergraduate Honors Theses
By highlighting how youth activism in New Jersey advanced efforts for racial justice in the state and facilitated regional and national collaboration, this project helps us understand the mid-twentieth century's civil rights movement as a national, not just a Southern struggle, led by youth.
In recent years, there has been growing interest in the civil rights movement, with scholars looking beyond the most prominent male leaders of the national movement in the 1960s. This project builds on the work of scholars like Martha Biondi and Tomas Sugrue who have established the significance of the Black freedom struggle in the North. …

Special Issue 2024: Transforming Experience In Non-Hospital Settings, Patient Experience Journal
Patient Experience Journal
Patient Experience Journal(PXJ) is excited to announce the call for submissions for its July/August 2024 special issue focused on exploring how healthcare organizations are transforming experience in non-hospital settings. So much of the experience conversation has been focused on and driven by the hospital setting – from acute care, to pediatrics, safety net hospitals and more. While this focus remains essential to some of the most critical care delivered in the healthcare ecosystem, it is important to recognize the volume of care being provided in new and existing settings. This special issue seeks to uncover and elevate the practices …
Doctor Behaviors That Impact Patient Satisfaction, Bryan Lilly, Michael J. Tippins, Katharine Tippins, Julia Lilly
Doctor Behaviors That Impact Patient Satisfaction, Bryan Lilly, Michael J. Tippins, Katharine Tippins, Julia Lilly
Patient Experience Journal
Patient satisfaction with their doctor is an essential component of healthcare that impacts both patient health outcomes and fiscal success of healthcare organizations. This study identifies doctor behaviors that act as drivers of patient satisfaction when doctor expertise is set aside and determines the importance of these behaviors between different age groups. Survey data were gathered from two samples, one comprising younger adults at a mid-size Midwestern university (n=100) and one comprising older adults from a national market research survey panel provider (n=187). Subjects were asked to rate their satisfaction with their doctors from 0‑100 and rate the importance of …
Identifying Sources Of Patient Dissatisfaction When Seeking Care For A Chronic And Complex Disease, Katharine J. Head, Anna K. Forster, Amanda Harsin, Rebecca J. Bartlett Ellis
Identifying Sources Of Patient Dissatisfaction When Seeking Care For A Chronic And Complex Disease, Katharine J. Head, Anna K. Forster, Amanda Harsin, Rebecca J. Bartlett Ellis
Patient Experience Journal
Patients’ evaluations of healthcare often rely on patient satisfaction and encounter-specific approaches. Instead, valuable information can be gained by focusing on patient dissatisfaction with healthcare over time. This study examined patients’ sources of care dissatisfaction when seeking healthcare for a long-term chronic and complex disease (CCD). Participants with a CCD called polycystic kidney disease (N=387) completed an online questionnaire with an open-ended question about dissatisfying experiences. Content analysis was used to analyze responses. The coded data resulted in conceptual codes related to dissatisfaction with information, support, and care management. Analysis revealed the type of healthcare provider is often …

This literature review focuses on the complexities and inequalities of informal caregiving in the UK and was inspired by the story of the following individual: EL is a 68-year-old Caucasian lady who attended Movement Disorder Clinic and was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease Dementia following many years of symptoms. The diagnosis came as a big relief to EL and her daughter (SL) who were eager to get treatment started as soon as possible. EL lives alone with SL and solely relies on her for care and support. SL does not have children and devotes her daily routine to looking after her …
The Frontier For Human Experience Is Closer Than We Think, Jason A. Wolf
The Frontier For Human Experience Is Closer Than We Think, Jason A. Wolf
Patient Experience Journal
When we think of frontiers, we think of boundaries between the known and unknown, the edge we see in the distance, something that is always just over the horizon. Yet when we step into what was once the frontier, the horizon moves on us, with new distances to cross, edges to reach. It is this dynamic of frontiers, wrapped in our individual and shared experiences of the last few years that shape this very special issue. It is also why now more than ever frontiers are an important part of our transformation. Frontiers that push us beyond where we can …

Justice House At Niagara University: An Emerging Approach To Teaching Vincentian Social Justice During And After The Covid-19 Pandemic, Kevin A. Hinkley
Journal of Vincentian Social Action
Some commentators have predicted that the disruptive effects of the COVID-19 pandemic will transform the landscape of higher education in the United States. For example, Scott Galloway, Professor of Marketing at NYU Stern School of Business, predicts that most U.S. colleges and universities will either “go out of business or become a shadow of themselves.” Professor Galloway argues that the few elite universities that survive will enter into corporate partnerships with Big Tech companies such as Google, Apple, and Meta. From this perspective, for the overwhelming majority of U.S. colleges and universities there won’t be a “post-pandemic recovery”— at least …
Accepting Educational Responsibility For Social Justice: Homeless Mothers’ And Children’S Need Of Education About Health And Nutrition, Smita Guha
Journal of Vincentian Social Action
The goal is to improve health and nutrition among new mothers and their children who were living in shelters. The mothers received workshops and booklets consisting of information, quick and healthy recipes, and learned how to prepare home-made meals with a low budget. The mothers realized nutritious foods are important for them and their children. They learned how to manage time to make nutritious food at the residence. Children regardless of their background, are our future and we need to pay attention to their needs now so that future problems could be prevented. The significance of this study is immense …

Exploring Sexual Health Education Disparities Among Latina Immigrants In Jackson Heights, N.Y., Maria Camila Lopez, Hira Shafeeq
Journal of Vincentian Social Action
The purpose of the current study is to explore the factors that influence sexual health decisions of female Latina immigrants with low socioeconomic status in an urban area. We aimed to evaluate the possible preventive steps to lower their risk of contracting STDs. The need for this study was highlighted by research findings that suggest that health disparities among Hispanic immigrants have had a significant impact on their poor quality of life due to lack of proper access to medical care and misdiagnosis due to differences in risk factors and manifestations of the disease. Sexual health is a constant issue …
Mental Health Stigma As A Sociocultural Complex Within Panamanian Culture, Arielle Sanders
Mental Health Stigma As A Sociocultural Complex Within Panamanian Culture, Arielle Sanders
Journal of Vincentian Social Action
The purpose of this study is to examine mental health stigma within the sociocultural context shared by members of the Panamanian population. Mental health stigma is complex because it manifests itself differently according to the cultural context in which it is experienced. Culture informs individual beliefs, behaviors, and attitudes regarding how a person should live within their immediate household and within society. This social conditioning is accomplished through a variety of means, including the passing down of social norms, traditions, and customs. Ultimately, these cultural characteristics encourage socially acceptable behaviors while simultaneously discouraging undesirable behaviors in order to maintain group …

Metacrisis, Not Civil War: Examining France’S Unrest In June/July 2023, Thomas G. Chevalier
Metacrisis, Not Civil War: Examining France’S Unrest In June/July 2023, Thomas G. Chevalier
Emancipations: A Journal of Critical Social Analysis
In this commentary, I examine the urban riots that took place in France at the end of June and early July 2023 to assess the levels of violence and the response of the French government. I argue that the unrest did not represent the brink of a civil war, as wrongly claimed by dark journalistic assessments and dominant right-wing political discourses, but pertained to a more profound condition of metacrisis (a state where a crisis enters a crisis of its own and a dangerous situation of social strife ensues). Tracing recent discourses and imaginaries of civil war in France and …
Is Costco Worth Incentivizing? An Analysis From The City’S Perspective., Mccord Lethco
Is Costco Worth Incentivizing? An Analysis From The City’S Perspective., Mccord Lethco
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Costco stores have significant economic implications for smaller cities, often becoming pivotal points in their development. These cities eagerly invite Costco to establish stores within their borders, offering substantial financial incentives to facilitate this growth. The effects of a new Costco store can be diverse, impacting local municipalities in both positive and negative ways. This study focuses on two key aspects: changes in sales tax revenue and property values, keeping in mind the agglomeration[1] effects that Costcos bring about.
I examine three Utah cities to estimate the impact on taxable sales and analyzes Costco's influence on residential property values …

Book Bans, Academic Freedom, And The Academic Law Library: Reflections On An Aall Discussion Den, Olivia Smith Schlinck
Library Staff Online Writings
Discussion Dens are consistently among my favorite programs at the AALL Annual Meeting, and Leslie Street’s Book Bans, Academic Freedom, and the Academic Law Library discussion was truly a highlight of AALL 2023. Street approached this difficult and ever-evolving issue with expertise, passion, and open-mindedness, guiding the group to consider: what can law librarians do to support our colleagues in states facing books bans on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) bases?

When a person indicates they are “liberal” or “conservative,” an important part of what they are communicating is their goals for how they would like society to be structured. However, past theories have described these goals in dramatically different fashions, suggesting that either conservativism or liberalism reflects a divisive or unifying goal. To help overcome this impasse, this research team systematically compared a broad, representative sample of all possible higher-order goals (drawn a previous lexical investigation of more than 1,000 goals) to the political ideology of American adults (total n = 1,588). The results of five studies suggested that proposals …

The Role Of Occupational Therapy Practitioners In The Care Of Pets And Animals: A Guide To Aging In Place With Pets And Animals, Blake Randell, Mary Jan Greer, Sherry Pidgeon
Summer 2023 Virtual OTD Capstone Symposium
This capstone project explored the role of occupational therapy practitioners in the care of pets and animals among older adults which has been referred to as the forgotten instrumental activity of daily living (or IADL) for this population. A needs assessment was conducted to determine how to provide facilitators and remove barriers or hindrances to occupational performance in the care of pets and animals among a group of older adults (with a variety of disability- and non-disability-related needs) in independent living communities. This needs assessment identified compounding health disparities of physical and/or cognitive impairments and lack of financial and necessary …

Summer 2023 Virtual OTD Capstone Symposium
The purpose of the program was to shed light on addressing health literacy barriers and provide occupation-based education for healthcare providers serving Hispanic Americans, specifically in rural areas. Additionally, the purpose of the program was to close the gap by providing healthcare practitioners with tools and resources to assist in combating the barriers faced to include the lack of occupational therapy services. The pre-and post-survey during the needs assessment helped determine the participant's baseline understanding of various aspects related to health literacy and guided the development of the educational modules and informative resources. Based on the outcomes of the survey, …

The Effects Of Covid-19 On Cognition In The Pediatric Population, Mia Ramirez, Hope Mccarroll, Lisa Griggs-Stapleton
Summer 2023 Virtual OTD Capstone Symposium
Coronavirus disease or COVID-19, is an infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. COVID-19 can affect adults and children by causing long-term symptoms such as difficulty concentrating, anxiety, depression, long-term breathing problems, and even heart complications. Children represent about 19% of all reported COVID-19 cases since the pandemic first began. Children also can have trouble concentrating, which can impact their ability to attend school and do their daily activities that require concentration, such as dressing, showering, and social participation. Cognitive deficits due to COVID-19 can impact the pediatric population as they may have decreased occupational performance in desired occupations, such …

Participant Acceptability Of Questionnaires Impacts Sexual Victimization Prevalence Rates, Raeann E. Anderson, Erica L. Goodman, Emily M. Carstens Namie
Psychology Faculty Publications
Obtaining accurate prevalence rates of sexual violence is made difficult by discrepancies in self-report questionnaires. Thus, the current study sought to explore participants’ perceptions of acceptability (i.e., perceived difficulty and preference) as a potential mechanism of discrepancy between different questionnaires. Participants were 673 college students who completed two frequently used sexual victimization questionnaires, the Sexual Experiences Survey-Short Form Victimization (SES-SFV) and the Post-Refusal Sexual Persistence Scales-Victimization (PRSPS-V). Participants then answered questions about each measure’s perceived difficulty and their preference between the two. Participants found the PRSPS-V easier to understand and preferred it 2.5 to 1 over the SES-SFV. Preference was …

Accomplishing oral interactive workplace tasks requires various language abilities, including pragmatics. While technology-mediated tasks are thought to offer many possibilities for teaching and assessing second language (L2) pragmatics, their effectiveness – especially those facilitated by an AI agent (artificial intelligence agent) – remains to be explored. This study investigated how 47 tertiary-level learners of English as a second language (ESL) performed on an oral interactive task that required them to make requests to their boss in two distinct modalities. Each participant completed the same task with a fully automated AI agent and with a human interlocutor in a face-to-face format. …
