As a sociologist, I study the social and environmental effects of the rapid growth of bottled-water consumption in the U.S. and beyond, and how it is linked to distrust of public tap water. In my new book, “Unbottled,” one chapter examines how these dynamics played out in Flint. As its example shows, communities can end up relying on bottled water – often at great expense – for years after a crisis.

The link between socioemotional functioning and academic achievement is well established, as is the evidence showing that children with disabilities often develop socioemotional functioning differently than peers without disabilities. However, few studies have considered how early skills are associated with growth of socioemotional functioning for children, and how that may differ for children with disabilities. eSports is a newly rising field with rapidly increasing cultural validity. Despite the wide array of similarities between eSports and traditional sports, behavioral skill acquisition interventions have yet to be applied to video game skills. Feedback-based behavioral interventions in particular have been commonly used and implemented for effective skill acquisition for traditional sports. Although video feedback has been established as effective in conjunction with video modeling for traditional sports, further research is needed to validate its efficacy as a standalone intervention. Diesel engine performance and costs represent crucial factors for agricultural producers while pollutants from the exhaust are largely a social concern but also important to producers. Beginning in 1970, Congress authorized the Environmental Protection Agency to regulate emissions with amendments in subsequent years (U.S. EPA, 2023). In 1996 the EPA issued strict Exhaust Emission Standards for Nonroad Compression-Ignition Engines, causing a major paradigm shift in acceptable emission levels. A primary concern coming from many manufacturers was the difficulty of designing an engine to meet these standards without compromising the engines’ power output and efficient fuel consumption (Lloyd and Cackette 2001; …

Quantifying The Effectiveness Of Night Vision Detection: A Comparative Study Of Visible Light, Night Vision, And Thermal Images, Feng Yeh

This research presents a comprehensive assessment of night vision goggles and thermal imagers, with a particular emphasis on their performance under a wide range of environmental and temporal conditions. Field testing of these devices was carried out across diverse settings, including daytime, nighttime, and different environmental temperatures. Key evaluation metrics, such as contrast, recognition distance, and image clarity, were employed to assess device performance.The findings reveal that while night vision goggles maintain consistent performance across various conditions, their image clarity and contrast are influenced by the recognition distance. Last year during Open Access Week, Georgia State University Library asked its students, "What should professors know about expensive textbooks?" and "What have you done when a textbook was too expensive?" Applying open pedagogical approaches, these questions were displayed on white boards at library service desks on each campus. Students were encouraged to respond to the first question in their own words, and they were asked to respond to the second question by selecting one of five responses. Responses were analyzed and anonymized, and they were then used in faculty professional development to demonstrate the local impact of expensive textbooks. …

The United States criminal justice system’s (CJS) primary purpose is for the rehabilitation of the individuals within it, which calls for a comprehensive evaluation and critique of its effectiveness. Though there are many variables of the CJS that can be evaluated, for those who are battling a substance or opioid use disorder, accessing treatment is particularly difficult. The World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes childhood sexual abuse (CSA) as a global health issue. CSA is a human violation that affects both female and male children and has a stronger detrimental impact on mental health than other traumatic childhood experiences. Despite a growing awareness of male survivors of CSA, male survivors are a marginalized group as most CSA research focuses on females. In addition, masculine norms can keep male adults from disclosing further, which can delay support and increase mental health issues. Both of these treatment approaches were developed out of strategies that African Americans have used as means of being resilient in the face of oppressive circumstances. These treatment approaches can be used conjointly to help enhance the well-being of African American clients. Both approaches help clients develop more positive, healthier outlooks and perspectives. Black students with darker complexions experience a disproportionate application of exclusionary practices within educational settings (Crutchfield et al., 2022). This review seeks to highlight colorism’s impact on the Black community in the education system through examining the historical context of colorism, the connection between colorism and racism, and how colorism is manifested and perpetuated in contemporary society in the United States. “Antiblackness” is an enduring trait of the United States that has rooted and fixed itself to its school structures (Coles & Powell, 2019). In this session, learn how librarians at Concordia University, St. Paul helped lead an initiative to implement OERs throughout the university’s General Education (GE) curriculum. During the summer term, librarians — along with instructional designers and the LMS team — updated thirteen courses, reworking the curriculum, reenvisioning assignments, and replacing traditional course materials with open or library-licensed content. This initiative resulted in more than $110,000 in savings per semester for full-time students.

Throughout the process, librarians encountered many challenges, including resistance from faculty, replacing entrenched ancillary materials from major publishers (quizzes, labs, etc.), and managing expectations. And while the initiative …

In 2019 Collier Library hosted an exhibit, Ghosts Over the Boiler, as part of the University of North Alabama’s common read program. This exhibit, developed by English professor Dr. Katie Owens-Murphy and curated by librarian Jennifer Pate, led to the development of both a physical Alabama Death Row Archive and a digital archive housed in the library’s institutional repository, the Repository of Open Access Research (RoOAR). This archive aims to preserve and amplify the work of Project Hope to Abolish the Death Penalty (PHADP), the nation’s only 501(c)(3) organization founded and run by people on death row. Nonresponse to online surveys has been a notable concern of survey methodologists, who continue to implement strategies and incentives to boost returns. Don Dillman’s methods emphasize tailored designs to maximize response rates, and this paper assesses how mailed notification designs and requested deadlines for completion influence online survey response rates. Using a target population of rural Kansans, this paper assesses how minor changes in printed notifications are connected to participation in an online survey. Postcards were mailed to private water well owners inviting recipients to complete a 40-item online questionnaire about their water usage; notifications varied in their personalization of …

Population density is among the most insightful demographical metrics for urban planners, land developers and researchers in the geography sector. In this article, a Geographical Information System (GIS) framework is designed to study the spatial and temporal population density trends and investigate whether any notable patterns may be attributed to the socioeconomic factors prevalent in each period. The methodology involves collecting spatial population data over time and using GIS to overlay the population density changes against various socioeconomic parameters in Kuwait. The Granite Island Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) location became a new ground-based remote sensing aerosol site in 2018, and is the first site to collect aerosol data in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula using a Cimel sun photometer. The purpose of this study was to analyze the first complete year (2019) of AERONET data collected at Granite Island, Michigan, and to seek explanations for sudden increases in aerosol optical depth (AOD) values. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) satellite imagery, solar irradiance data, and meteorological data were used in conjunction with AERONET data for further validation. This study intended to provide insight into geospatial practitioners’ and educators’ viewpoints toward the National Geospatial Technology Center of Excellence (GeoTech Center) Geospatial Competency Matrix. These viewpoints are significant since educators and business professionals use workplace competencies for curriculum development, professional certification, and defining workforce requirements. The research question sought to determine the viewpoints toward the geospatial competencies and provides the field an understanding of how practitioners perceive these competency statements. Seventy participants sorted 72 cards (with Geospatial Competency Matrix Statements) on a scale of -6 to 6 and completed two short surveys with demographic and open-ended questions. The data …

During his time in service, Beatty kept a journal and meticulously recorded dates and key events, though Beatty was not unique in doing so, as diaries, journals, and letters were essential correspondence during the Civil War (Maness and Combs 2010). However, Beatty, who moved to Gibbon, Nebraska following the war in 1872, later shared his original journal entries which were reprinted in the Buffalo County Beacon (Gibbon, Nebraska’s newspaper). This study aims to show the effects of contractual liability for breach of negotiation via electronic means of communication in Jordanian legislation. Where it became clear that preliminary electronic negotiations are a previous basic stage in the electronic contracting process, in terms of organizing the conduct of negotiations by putting forward ideas and offers between the negotiating parties, and discussing among them to reach mutual agreement until the negotiated contract is concluded.
