Everyday Engagement With Mobile Phones In An Urban Slum In Delhi, Simranjeet Kaur, Sunita Singh

Journal of Media Literacy Education

This ethnographic case study presents findings of an 18-month research study focusing on the ways in which families residing in an urban slum were using mobile phones and how this use supported literacy practices. Data collection included participant observations and interviews with 42 participants including parents, children and community members. Results of the data analysis indicated that in this urban slum, most participants owned a mobile phone which provided multiple entry points to learning. On the 400th anniversary of American enslavement the New York Times (NYT) 1619 project launched an interactive digital experience including a popular podcast centering the contributions and narratives of Black Americans. This study sought to understand how HBCU students responded to learning Black music history through what we term a “pop culture podcast.” This study explored the ways in which this particular podcast could support the development of Critical Race Media Literacy (CRML) based on a media discourse at a Historically Black College/University (HBCU). Public libraries serve as repositories for a movement described as cultivation of the Library of Things. In the wake of COVID-19, the West Lafayette Public Library enhanced its existing Library of Things collection through the creation of science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics (STEAM) kits. Since 2017, the West Lafayette Public Library has held regular free STEAM programs for the community; those programs were put on hold during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, which concurred with a library renovation. In this brief, Carsey Senior Demographer Kenneth Johnson reports that population gains were widespread in New England last year, according to new Census Bureau estimates. All six states gained population for the first time since before the pandemic. New Hampshire and Maine continued to gain population, just as they have in each of the last four years. In contrast, Massachusetts and Rhode Island gained population last year after several years of population decline. Vermont and Connecticut also continued to add population.

Research reveals that high stress levels in undergraduate students may negatively impact their emotional and physical well-being. Short-term approaches to introducing stress management on college campuses have been explored. The purpose of this preliminary study was to determine whether a first-year stress management seminar course helped students reduce their stress a year after completing the course, identify which stress management skills students preferred, and assess the effectiveness of specific teaching techniques on student learning. Talking about race can improve children’s ethnic identities, prepare them for encounters with racism, and reduce their racial biases. Yet adults hold intuitive beliefs (e.g., children do not notice race) that limit their conversations about race with children. Children can also initiate conversations about race, but children have been found to avoid talking about race by 10 years. It has been suggested that children avoid talking about race because of colorblind norms, but children’s reasoning about color blindness as a norm is not well understood. In this paper I discuss a novel construction in English, restricted to existentials and possessive have sentences, exemplified by sentences such as There’s all sand in my hair. I argue that the syntax and the semantics of this construction, which I have labeled the completive all construction, can be explained only if all is understood to be modifying a silent element (in the sense of Kayne 2004). This report is an update to a techno-economic feasibility study undertaken in 2018 to examine the efficacy of building and operating a microgrid in Downtown Cleveland, Ohio. Many factors have changed since 2018, including the 2022 passage of the Inflation Reduction Act, pursuant to which significant tax credits will make microgrids and grid edge technology adoption more attractive. Such a microgrid could offer enhanced resiliency and uptime to customers at prices that are competitive with existing rates for commercial power within the local investor owned utility’s service area.
