Political Views, Race And Ethnicity, And Social Isolation: Evidence From The General Social Survey, Song Yang, Michael Nino

Using data from the General Social Survey, we investigate whether political views increase the risk of social isolation for Black and White Americans. Our findings reveal an increase in conservative political views differently shaping social isolation patterns for Black and White Americans. For instance, changes in political views from liberal to conservative are associated with reduced risk of social isolation for White Americans, whereas a rise in conservative political views is related to increases in social isolation for Black Americans. Results also demonstrate that these patterns remain after accounting for important covariates such as gender, age, education, occupation, marital status, …

School Choice Demonstration Project

Charter schools are public schools that operate free from some government regulations in return for a commitment to achieve a set of student outcomes specified in their charter. Nearly 8,000 public charter schools enrolled 3.7 million students in the U.S. in 2020-21. Our team has studied charter school funding across the United States since 2005, consistently finding that, in major cities, charter schools receive less funding per pupil compared to traditional public schools (TPS). We have also found that charter schools use their funding more efficiently, achieving better short- and long-term outcomes per dollar invested, relative to TPS.

For 20 years, Arkansas school districts have been required to provide access to advanced coursework through Advanced Placement (AP) and Concurrent Enrollment (CE) courses. Despite universal access, we find that enrollment in AP or CE courses still varies across students’ demographic groups. However, the findings also highlight improved postsecondary outcomes for several student groups.

Literature on Advanced Placement (AP) and dual or concurrent enrollment (CE) courses shows that entry to and completion of these rigorous courses can increase students’ cognitive and non-cognitive outcomes. Issues of equity remain as White students and students from more affluent backgrounds tend to enroll in these courses at much higher rates than minoritized students and low-income students. Arkansas implemented a universal policy mandating all school districts provide access to AP and CE courses. This judgement is a milestone in the Tanzanian jurisprudence as it subjects the Tanzanian legal system to scrutiny by an international court with regards to a provision in a domestic statute providing for non-bailable offenses. The legal system of Tanzania overlooked an opportunity in this case to examine the compatibility of national legislations with international human rights standards. This judgement highlights the critical role of human rights non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and their efforts to challenge domestic laws that may infringe upon fundamental rights through emphasizing the need for alignment and adherence to international human rights standards.

The Bracero Program was a bi-nationally sponsored by the U.S. and Mexico which meant to provide labor in the agricultural and industrial sectors of American society during World War II. The program ran from 1942 and 1964 where about 4.5 million Mexican men were contracted to provide labor in the U.S. for a period of time not exceeding six months. The Use Of Regularization To Detect Racial Inequities In Pay Equity Studies: An Empirical Study And Reflections On Regulation Methods, Christopher M. Peña

Since the late 1970s, multiple linear regression has been the preferred method for identifying discrimination in pay. An empirical study on this topic was conducted using quantitative critical methods. A literature review first examined conflicting views on using multiple linear regression in pay equity studies. The review found that multiple linear regression is used so prevalently in pay equity studies because the courts and practitioners have widely accepted it and because of its simplicity and ability to parse multiple sources of variance simultaneously. Rarely are the experiences of enslaved women prioritized in studying the history of enslavement in the United States. This is particularly true in relation to how black women experienced, survived, and carved out agency in the face of sexual violence. Rather than acknowledge the strength demonstrated by these women, contemporary historiography relegates them to the position of victims. This research intervenes in this practice and argues that enslaved women worked hard to create agency for themselves in the face of sexual violence from those that enslaved them. Purpose:

To date, there are no automated tools for the identification and fine-grained classification of paraphasias within discourse, the production of which is the hallmark characteristic of most people with aphasia (PWA). In this work, we fine-tune a large language model (LLM) to automatically predict paraphasia targets in Cinderella story retellings.

Method:

Data consisted of 332 Cinderella story retellings containing 2,489 paraphasias from PWA, for which research assistants identified their intended targets. We supplemented these training data with 256 sessions from control participants, to which we added 2,415 synthetic paraphasias. We conducted four experiments using different training data configurations to …

There is a grave need for additions to the school psychologist’s toolbox to support students with intellectual disability (ID) and sexual trauma. These children are especially vulnerable to adverse life experiences overall and are at a particularly high risk of experiencing sexual abuse and resulting trauma. Children with ID are less likely to have their trauma symptoms identified by those around them, as symptoms do not always present in the same way as their neurotypical peers and trauma symptoms are more likely to be grouped into the rest of their disability through diagnostic overshadowing.
