Stereotype Threat Within The Lgbtq+ Community, Chloe Laporte
Stereotype Threat Within The Lgbtq+ Community, Chloe Laporte
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
This study examined stereotype threat for students from the LGBTQ+ community. Stereotype threat can cause negative effects regarding performance and can influence the expression of social behaviors. This project observed differences between LGBTQ+ and non-LGBTQ+ identifying groups who believe the study tests performance stereotypes for LGBTQ+ students (or not), on a quantitative test, as well as for responses about social behaviors. I postulated that LGBTQ+ individuals under threat will perform more poorly on the test, and exhibit more problematic social behaviors. In the current study, some participants were assigned to a control condition and were given a diagnostic test, while …

The least was Somalia, one (01) document. Overall, the University of Cape Town in South Africa had the highest publications (269) as …
Revisiting The Geography Of Globalisation In The Covid-19 Pandemic Using Risk Theory, Kunphatu Sakwit
Revisiting The Geography Of Globalisation In The Covid-19 Pandemic Using Risk Theory, Kunphatu Sakwit
Journal of Social Sciences
My review paper is part of Covid-IAS Project, funded by National Research Council of Thailand. The paper focuses on the geography of globalisation in the Covid -19 pandemic. I employ Ulrich Beck’s concept of risk society to critically examine geography. Although Beck is not a geography theorist, his theory can be used extensively and alternatively to study the geography of globalisation. By drawing upon Beck, I argue that the geography of globalisation in the context of Covid -19 displays forms of dependency upon the politics of knowledge about Covid -19 vaccines. With the production of knowledge, the vaccines have caused …

Marginalized Community College Students' Perspectives Of Their First Time In Honors And Experiences With Tracking, Trina Sotirakopulos
Marginalized Community College Students' Perspectives Of Their First Time In Honors And Experiences With Tracking, Trina Sotirakopulos
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Many of the variables that determine college admission are beyond a student’s control, including the academic track they were assigned as early as primary school—often referred to as “ability-grouping” or skills-homogeneous classes. Even in higher education, students feel the effects of unequal sorting and sifting from tracking. The purpose of this study was to learn from marginalized community college students who were in low and middle track courses in high school. The study located how socially marginalized students taking honors courses for the first time perceived their past experiences with tracking, current opportunities in community college honors, and ways tracking …
Effects Of Indonesian Cuisine On The Dutch Kitchen And Culture Post World War Ii, Anton Syril Van Schaik
Effects Of Indonesian Cuisine On The Dutch Kitchen And Culture Post World War Ii, Anton Syril Van Schaik
Pitzer Senior Theses
As a colony of the Netherlands, the Dutch East Indies (upon independence named Indonesia) was a prodigious source of economic revenue -- first due to the spice trade and then coffee -- for the Netherlands from around 1610 to 1949. But, despite the long history of Dutch colonization in Southeast Asia, Indonesian cuisine failed to make a large impact on Dutch culture and cuisine until the 1940s. Before World War II, despite the Netherlands primarily deriving its revenue from global trade, both economically, and especially culturally, all areas, except for the economically engaged, Western cities, were extremely insulated. However, due …
Decolonial Foodurisms: From Plantations To Agricultural Spaces Of Intersectional Healing, Dominic Arzadon
Decolonial Foodurisms: From Plantations To Agricultural Spaces Of Intersectional Healing, Dominic Arzadon
Pitzer Senior Theses
Considering the complex colonial histories and relationalities associated with agricultural food production, a reimagined future beyond the violent legacy of plantations is presented. Exploring land as the site for intersectional healing to take place, the symbiotic relationship between humans and food production is increasingly becoming a reality—a theoretical framework I propose called decolonial foodurisms (pronounced food-yoor-isms). Combining “food” and “futurism” to emphasize that our collective futures are predicated on food security and food justice for all and especially for marginalized and racialized communities with ancestral ties to agricultural violence, decolonial foodurisms aims to capture how intersectional healing can come into …
Machines With Heart: Utilizing An Sts Framework To Analyze Implementation And Design Of Social Eldercare Robots In Germany And Japan, Lucy Conover
Pitzer Senior Theses
Robots are everywhere from car factories to cafes, but many people may not realize robots are quite popular in assisted living residencies for older adults. Social eldercare robots (SER) provide care to older adults without relying on human labor, offering a lucrative promise of technological efficiency during global labor crises. However, their adaptation into care settings is not this simple. Human trust in robots is rooted in nuanced social, cultural, and historical factors, making SER a highly interpretively flexible technology. This thesis analyzes social eldercare robot implementation in two countries, Germany and Japan, using a "Science, Technology and Society" (STS) …

“They Hurt Me Pauley:” Applying Queer Performance Theory Within L.B. Hamilton’S Play A Midnight Clear To Understand Gendered Violence And Prejudice Against Feminine Msm, Skyllar M. Schoening
Schultz-Werth Award Papers
This essay uses the theoretical lens of queer performance theory to analyze L.B. Hamilton’s play, A Midnight Clear, to increase awareness of gendered violence and prejudice against feminine men-seeking-men (MSM). I first contextualize existing literature about sexual assault and the limited research about feminine men regarding sexual violence and assault. Then, I examine the components of queer performance theory, positing a metaphorical equation of combining both queer theory and performance theory to further understand the roots of queer performance theory. In this section, I also suggest the importance of representation and identity within a dramaturgical and theatrical-based lens from both …

The Influence Of Peyton Manning’S Christian Masculinity, Jacob Edwards
Schultz-Werth Award Papers
Have you ever had a role model or favorite athlete? I had a few, Peyton Manning was and still is my favorite. My favorite team has always been the Indianapolis Colts and that is the team Peyton Manning played for. Growing up I collected a variety of trading cards. I have a couple of Peyton Manning’s rookie cards and even one of his jersey cards. I remember getting those and being pretty fired up when I got them. I admired his attitude toward the sport as it always seemed like he was trying to make a positive impact, work hard, …

Mpacts Of Parental Incarceration On Child's Well-Being And Interventions To Support Them, Anna Stacey Roberge
Mpacts Of Parental Incarceration On Child's Well-Being And Interventions To Support Them, Anna Stacey Roberge
Honors Theses and Capstones
This study reviews the effectiveness and impact of current interventions for children who have incarcerated parents in New Hampshire. The negative impacts of parental incarceration have led to the need for these intervention strategies. Recently psychologists and behavioral experts have conducted their studies which show that children who have incarcerated parents are more likely to display delinquent behaviors. Additionally, studies have shown that parental incarceration can lead to the experiencing of several more psychological difficulties, such as depression, anxiety, and learning disorders (Kremer et al., 2020). Several communities have worked to implement interventions that will help these children avoid falling …

The Vernacular Ethics Of Stigmatized Care: Reinterpreting Acceptance And Confidentiality For Social Work In The West Bank, Palestine, David S. Byers, Anan Fareed, Khalid Hreish
Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research Faculty Research and Scholarship
Social workers in Palestine routinely navigate issues of stigma with their clients without formal ethical guidance. This constructivist grounded theory study examines how Palestinian social workers in the West Bank organize themselves ethically to provide stigmatized care—where social workers supporting people with socially rejected conditions and experiences can face community scorn by extension. We conducted focus groups and individual interviews with 99 social work supervisors in 12 cities over a 2-year period. Our analysis reveals localized reinterpretations of acceptance and confidentiality as ethically grounded principles for stigmatized care. These practice principles have emerged under strain in cases involving substance use, …

Social Identity As A Factor In Bystander Responses To Bias-Based Verbal Aggression Among College Students, Shveta Kumaria, David S. Byers, Katherine M. Mccarthy, Carmen Moedano
Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research Faculty Research and Scholarship
Bias-based bullying is a significant problem in the United States, including aggression targeting college students with minoritized social identities. Bystander responsiveness can help to buffer the effects, but social identity factors may influence how students respond to bias-based aggression among peers. We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of a subsample (N = 7,291) of the 2018–2019 Healthy Minds Study to test correlations between racial, sexual, and gender identities and self-reported and hypothetical peer interventions. Students who identify with minoritized sexual and gender identities, across racial identities, are most likely to report past or intended interventions while students who identify as …

The Role Of Validation Experiences And Sense Of Belonging In Academic Self-Concept And Intent To Persist Among Four-Year College Students, Sarah Slates
Bryn Mawr College Dissertations and Theses
Research indicates that historically underrepresented college students are more likely to report alienating campus climates which can contribute to decreased sense of belonging and wellbeing. In turn, a lack of a sense of belonging and poor mental health may lead to decreased academic engagement and increased likelihood of attrition. Theoretical and empirical literature on critical race theory (CRT), validation, and sense of belonging identifies key factors across individual and institutional levels that influence student wellbeing and academic outcomes without relying on a deficit-based framework. Using an interactional, ecological conceptual framework drawing together CRT, validation theory, and sense of belonging my …
Primary Care Physicians’ Experiences Treating Patients With Behavioral Health Needs, Lauren E. Dennelly
Primary Care Physicians’ Experiences Treating Patients With Behavioral Health Needs, Lauren E. Dennelly
Bryn Mawr College Dissertations and Theses
The delivery of behavioral health care in primary care shapes the patient-physician relationship, which is a core area of focus for examining patient outcomes. Though early research demonstrates the benefit of integrating physical and behavioral healthcare to the patient experience and health outcomes, little research examines the relational implications of this care from the perspective of the primary care physician, including the role of physician burnout. The following study utilized a mixed methods approach to first examine the experience of burnout among primary care physicians who work with patients with behavioral health needs and then, to explore the dynamics of …
Toward A Typology Of Internationalization Strategy: The Intersection Of External Environments With Universities’ Structures And Cultures, Eric D. Leise
Dissertations and Theses
This study explored the influence institutional cultures and structures have on a university’s internationalization strategy. It also accounted for the roles external forces, such as government policies and geopolitics, play in shaping internationalization strategies. The comparative case study between the United States, England, and Sweden were situated within the contextual framework of comprehensive internationalization developed by the American Council on Education (ACE) and German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). Applying neoinstitutionalist theory of isomorphism, the case study revealed three typologies of internationalization strategies: idealist, realist, and pragmatist. The study’s findings provide scholars and practitioners with new tools and insights to right-size …
A Phenomenological Study: Examining Resilience In Native American Women Who Witnessed Domestic Violence In Childhood And Experienced Domestic Violence In Adulthood, Arial T Swallow
