2023-4 Macro’S Missing Link: The Unbridged Gap Between Monetarism And The Wicksell Connection, David Laidler Jan 2023

2023-4 Macro’S Missing Link: The Unbridged Gap Between Monetarism And The Wicksell Connection, David Laidler

Department of Economics Research Reports

Modern mainstream macroeconomics treats the economy “as if” always in equilibrium. Two older traditions, Monetarism and the Wicksell Connections have always dissented, arguing that how agents gather information and apply it to the coordination of their activities are prior problems requiring attention before equilibrium can, or cannot, be assumed. They have developed the implications of this claim along different lines, however, with the former dealing with questions raised by the existence of monetary exchange in general and the latter concentrating in particular on inter-temporal issues. This gap has persisted since Wicksell opened it up, and has never been satisfactorily bridged: …

2023-5 History Of Economic Thought's Place In Macroeconomics Revisited, David Laidler Jan 2023

2023-5 History Of Economic Thought's Place In Macroeconomics Revisited, David Laidler

Department of Economics Research Reports

The History of Economics Society was founded at a time when the History of Economic Thought was being expelled from the Economics post-graduate curriculum in many universities, and was one of the key institutions around which the sub-discipline successfully re-organised itself and continued to develop. Laidler (2003) argued that Economics itself, especially Macroeconomics, was suffering serious damage from this expulsion. It has continued to do so since.

Polygenic Scores Ignore Development And Epigenetics, Dramatically Reducing Their Value, David S. Moore Jan 2023

Polygenic Scores Ignore Development And Epigenetics, Dramatically Reducing Their Value, David S. Moore

Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research

Polygenic scores cannot elucidate the mechanisms that produce behavioral phenotypes (including “intelligence”). Therefore, they are unlikely to yield helpful interventions. Moreover, they are poor predictors of individuals’ developmental outcomes. Burt’s critique is well-supported by the details of molecular biology. Specifically, experiences affect epigenetic factors that influence phenotypes via how the genome functions, a fact that lends support to Burt’s conclusions.

Molecular And Systemic Epigenetic Inheritance: Integrating Development, Genetics, And Evolution, Robert Lickliter, David S. Moore Jan 2023

Molecular And Systemic Epigenetic Inheritance: Integrating Development, Genetics, And Evolution, Robert Lickliter, David S. Moore

Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research

Currently, a central problem for theoretical biology is the integration of development with genetics and evolutionary theory. Through the late 20th century, biologists held that animals resemble their ancestors strictly because of the transgenerational transmission of DNA. This view effectively wrote development out of evolutionary biology. However, many molecular and developmental biologists now understand that phenotypes—anatomical, physiological, and behavioral traits—are not determined by genes (i.e., DNA segments) alone; instead, they emerge epigenetically from developmental processes involving co-acting genetic factors, environmental factors, molecular epigenetic factors, and other non-genetic factors within organisms’ bodies. This insight forces a rethinking of biological inheritance. …

Ideal Body Weight And Body Fat Percentage Predict Relative Energy Deficiency In Sport (Red-S) Scores In Collegiate Athletes, Emily Norman Jan 2023

Ideal Body Weight And Body Fat Percentage Predict Relative Energy Deficiency In Sport (Red-S) Scores In Collegiate Athletes, Emily Norman

Theses and Dissertations--Nutrition and Food Systems

Background: Low energy availability (LEA) is the underlying cause of Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S) which negatively affects athletes' physiological function, health, and performance. RED-S results from inadequate dietary intake to support energy expenditure for daily living, growth, and optimal performance. It occurs in both male and female athletes, with or without disordered eating. However, screening and diagnosis in athletes can be difficult. Objective: This study aims to identify strong predictors of RED-S and assess its prevalence in collegiate male and female athletes. Methods: A total of 270 NCAA athlete test points from mixed sports were evaluated for RED-S …

A Fractured Electorate?: French Presidental Election Forecasting For 2022, Ross E. Burkhart Jan 2023

A Fractured Electorate?: French Presidental Election Forecasting For 2022, Ross E. Burkhart

Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper forecasts the first round of the French presidential election five months in advance. It uses a key industry-standard structural variable in its forecasting model, approval of the French president. Its parsimony allows for an early forecast, but its potential for error is higher. In the end, the forecast was somewhat off the mark, though it accurately showed the strength of a somewhat attenuated left. However, the structure of French political parties has changed dramatically over the past several years, leaving some doubt as to the reliability of this forecasting technique.

2021 Excavations Of The Dearfield General Store And 1930s Dance Pavilion At The Dearfield Townsite And National Register Of Historic Places District, Robert H. Brunswig

Dearfield Archaeological Reports

Historical archaeology, except in cases where physical evidence is missing or destroyed, can often make significant contributions for reconstructing earlier lifestyles, economies, and social, political, and faith histories. The scientific recovery and interpretation of archaeological evidence in the form of artifacts, architecture, and human-organized spatial patterns is essential in understanding and contextualizing documentary, photographic, and memoric (e.g., oral history) evidence. In the case of the early 20th Century Dearfield townsite and its associated African American farming colony, retrieving their surviving archaeological records is both rewarding and challenging. Dearfield the townsite represents the founding seed from which the larger colony community …

Identifying Hazardous Patterns In Msha Data Using Random Forests, Olivia Milam Jan 2023

Identifying Hazardous Patterns In Msha Data Using Random Forests, Olivia Milam

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Mining safety and health in the US can be better understood through the application of machine learning techniques to data collected by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). By identifying hazardous conditions that could lead to accidents before they occur, valuable insights can be gained by MSHA, mining operators, and miners. In this study, we propose using a Random Forest machine learning model to predict whether a given mining violation will lead to an accident, and if so, whether it will be fatal or non-fatal. To achieve this, the model is trained on MSHA violation data and the sum …

Limit(Ation)S, Sustainability, And The Future Of Climate Migration, Jemima Nomunume Baada, Bipasha Baruah, Isaac Luginaah Jan 2023

Limit(Ation)S, Sustainability, And The Future Of Climate Migration, Jemima Nomunume Baada, Bipasha Baruah, Isaac Luginaah

Data and Test Instruments

Climate change and human migration are two of the world’s most pressing issues, as many populations rely on migration as an adaptation strategy to climatic stressors. Human experiences of, and responses to, climate stress are uneven and mediated by resource privilege. In many communities in the Global South, climate vulnerabilities are exacerbated by fragile ecological conditions due to geographical positioning, and many already marginalised groups shoulder a disproportionate burden of climate change effects, despite contributing the least to this problem. In parts of sub-Saharan Africa, rapidly deteriorating climatic conditions imply that climate vulnerabilities may be reproduced in migration destination areas …

Gender Equality And Empowerment In The Social And Solidarity Economy, Bipasha Baruah Jan 2023

Gender Equality And Empowerment In The Social And Solidarity Economy, Bipasha Baruah

Data and Test Instruments

The social and solidarity economy (SSE) has been successful in providing millions of women with good incomes and dignified working conditions, social services and protections, and sources of affiliation and solidarity that have positive effects upon their health and wellbeing. In the future, the SSE must engage with other persistent challenges to gender inequality, including women’s underrepresentation in leadership roles, their inability to access land and property rights and to participate in politics at par with men, and the fact that women all over the world continue to shoulder a disproportionate burden of household maintenance and caregiving activities. The SSE …

Predictive Language Comprehension In Parkinson's Disease, Katharine Aveni, Juweiriya Ahmed, Arielle Borovsky, Ken Mcrae, Mary E Jenkins, Katherine Sprengel, J Alexander Fraser, Joseph B Orange, Thea Knowles, Angela C Roberts

Psychology Publications

Verb and action knowledge deficits are reported in persons with Parkinson's disease (PD), even in the absence of dementia or mild cognitive impairment. However, the impact of these deficits on combinatorial semantic processing is less well understood. Following on previous verb and action knowledge findings, we tested the hypothesis that PD impairs the ability to integrate event-based thematic fit information during online sentence processing. Specifically, we anticipated persons with PD with age-typical cognitive abilities would perform more poorly than healthy controls during a visual world paradigm task requiring participants to predict a target object constrained by the thematic fit of …

The Chips And Science Act: The United States’ Race For Semiconductor Sovereignty, Jenna Kawar Jan 2023

The Chips And Science Act: The United States’ Race For Semiconductor Sovereignty, Jenna Kawar

MA Major Research Papers

This paper explores the CHIPS and Science Act in the United States. The microchip is extremely crucial to the function of technology as a whole, and its global supply chain is monopolized by countries such as the US, China, Taiwan, the Netherlands, South Korea, and Japan. The industry is fierce in competition, and holds many implications within political science, and international relations. The CHIPS Act is an Act that allocates funding toward the re-shoring efforts to manufacture and research the microchip on US territory. This paper explores the history leading up to the CHIPS Act, as well as the reasoning …

The Ambiguity In International Law And Its Effect On Drone Warfare And Cyber Security, Amina Khan Jan 2023

The Ambiguity In International Law And Its Effect On Drone Warfare And Cyber Security, Amina Khan

MA Major Research Papers

Drone warfare and artificial intelligence have considerably shaped cybersecurity and international law over the years. The rapid growth of technology has slowly forced entry into the international and domestic affairs of states. How countries conduct surveillance and practice defence does not look the way it did many years ago. One must observe how the rule of law is affected by technological advancement at the international level where many complexities are seen to rise to the surface. Balancing domestic and international law comes into question when drones and artificial intelligence become key components in state affairs that transcend geographical borders. This …

Forging A Liaison Team For The Future Through Renewed Onboarding Practices, Bettina Peacemaker, Emily Hurst Jan 2023

Forging A Liaison Team For The Future Through Renewed Onboarding Practices, Bettina Peacemaker, Emily Hurst

VCU Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations

Welcoming new employees is one of the most important jobs of a manager, but it is not an easy one. Guidance from the literature specific to academic liaison librarian onboarding is minimal and fails to address current workforce and workplace realities. This poster will explore how a team of liaison librarian managers used reflective and informed feedback to build a strong onboarding process to successfully welcome eight liaisons in two years and detail how the managers recently renewed their onboarding process to account for new, hybrid work environments and prepare new liaisons for the future of work in academia.
