Free Trade Is Not Free: A Case For Fair Trade, Wardah Javaid Cheema Jan 2023

Free Trade Is Not Free: A Case For Fair Trade, Wardah Javaid Cheema

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

To this day, mainstream economists favor free trade policies as the best way to generate economic development. They do so at the expense of their unjustified romanticization of reductionist classical trade theories. This thesis seeks to comprehend the constraints of traditional trade theories and their inability to be applied to practical contemporary problems. Further, contrary to the fundamental assumption of free trade theory, there is ample evidence of government intervention in free trade agreements. These interventions solely encourage and protect large corporations and investors rather than the actual development and sustainability factors, namely labor and the environment. It all adds …

Queer Is Here, Hopefully To Stay: The Incorporation And Reception Of Lgbtq+ History At The History Colorado Center, Madeline Ohaus Jan 2023

Queer Is Here, Hopefully To Stay: The Incorporation And Reception Of Lgbtq+ History At The History Colorado Center, Madeline Ohaus

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Historically, the documentation of LGBTQ+ histories, struggles, and accomplishments has been absent from museum collections and exhibitions. Scholars argue that given the authoritative nature of museums and their influence on the public, exclusions of LGBTQ+ history can mount to institutional erasure of queer identities. However, in the past decade, there has been an increase in attempts to document and curate exhibitions highlighting and encouraging the public to engage with LGBTQ+ history. While this history is imperative to preserve and display, it can be met with controversy, leading some LGBTQ+ history exhibitions to be relocated or even removed. During the summer …

Part 5: Virginia's Hotel Industry Grows, But Change Is Coming, Dragas Center For Economic Analysis And Policy, Old Dominion University

State of the Commonwealth Reports

This chapter assesses the performance of the hotel industry in the Commonwealth and discusses the challenges facing the hotel industry in 2024 and beyond. To understand the prospects for growth, we examine the recovery from the shock of 2020 and how different areas of the commonwealth fared with regard to hotel revenue and occupancy. We take stock of the competitive environment and how labor shortages continue to challenge hoteliers. We ask: what does the future hold for the hotel industry in Virginia?

A Study Of The Cultural And Geological Environment Of The Magic Mountain Site In Golden, Colorado, Brianna K. Dalessandro Jan 2023

A Study Of The Cultural And Geological Environment Of The Magic Mountain Site In Golden, Colorado, Brianna K. Dalessandro

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Magic Mountain site, located in Golden, Colorado, has been the subject of intensive academic studies since the 1950s because of its extensive artifact assemblage and long habitation periods. The aim of this thesis was to use ground-penetrating radar, magnetometry, GIS models, and lithic analysis to further study when and how the Magic Mountain site was used during prehistoric times and contextualize a variety of hypotheses about site habitation and migratory patterns of prehistoric people in Colorado.

The results of these analyses indicate the habitation and migratory pattern of the Magic Mountain site was a periodic, but consistent, proximal visitation …

The Varieties Of Afterlife Experience: Epistemological And Cultural Implications, Everton De Oliveira Maraldi Jan 2023

The Varieties Of Afterlife Experience: Epistemological And Cultural Implications, Everton De Oliveira Maraldi

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

When parapsychologists talk about survival, they are usually implying personal survival, that is, a process in which memories, motivations, and personality characteristics of a given person somehow persist after bodily death. Are there other conceptions of survival (and of personal identity) that deserve further scientific examination? My purpose with this brief commentary is to expand on Rock et al’s approach by urging survivalists to discuss and investigate further the many different conceptions of (and explanations for) survival. I propose we critically reflect on our theoretical assumptions and their epistemological and cultural consequences.

Psi-Entific Approach To Post-Mortem Survival: Employing The Multiple Sources Of Psi (Msop) And Discarnate Psi Hypotheses In The Calculation Of A Drake-S Equation, Serge Merlin Jan 2023

Psi-Entific Approach To Post-Mortem Survival: Employing The Multiple Sources Of Psi (Msop) And Discarnate Psi Hypotheses In The Calculation Of A Drake-S Equation, Serge Merlin

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

The continued investigations of the paranormal facilitated the development of novel theories and methodologies. Psi functioning of the living and the deceased in survival phenomena suggested the living agent psi (LAP) and discarnate psi hypotheses, but neither has demonstrated sufficient explanatory power to claim superiority in explaining survival data. Mediumship studies cannot determine whether paranormal information is sourced by means of discarnate psi or LAP, presenting the source-of-psi problem. Anomalous information can be obtained from joint sources (LAP, survival, or some other source), which supports the multiple sources of psi (MSoP) hypothesis. The maximized explanatory potential of the MSoP hypothesis …

Buddhism And Transpersonal Psychology, Elías Capriles Jan 2023

Buddhism And Transpersonal Psychology, Elías Capriles

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

In the debate between Freud and Romain Rolland the latter asserted the infants’ oceanic feeling to be saner than the adults’ limited sense of self, and that mystics recover the oceanic feeling without losing the learning achieved during socialization. Freud retorted that the oceanic feeling involved a sense of shelterlessness, and whoever went through derealization was psychotic and needed to be cured. However, the feeling of shelterlessness comes from the fledging sense of separation, and although derealization is a dangerous process, when it develops unhindered the result is greater sanity. So, Buddhism and TP agree in valuing transpersonal and holotropic …

Mindfulness Traps And The Entanglement Of Self: An Inquiry Into The Regime Of Mind, Richard Dixey, Ronald E. Purser Jan 2023

Mindfulness Traps And The Entanglement Of Self: An Inquiry Into The Regime Of Mind, Richard Dixey, Ronald E. Purser

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

Mindfulness meditation can provide salutary therapeutic benefits, as well as lead advanced practitioners to states of calm and equanimity. In this paper, we argue that such forms of meditation may subtly entrap practitioners in circular, self-reflexive feedback loops. Because these meditation traps fail to clearly discern the operations of mind, they offer a temporary oasis of peace within an unaltered dualistic realm of mind that leaves the root delusion of self-identity intact. Drawing upon Tarthang Tulku’s seminal book Revelations of Mind, we present what he refers to as the “regime of mind,” the processes of cognition, identification and re-cognition in …

Legacy Industry And Redlining In American Cities, Mark D. Bjelland, Jacob Foll Jan 2023

Legacy Industry And Redlining In American Cities, Mark D. Bjelland, Jacob Foll

Summer Research

Throughout the 1930s, the HOLC created residential security maps which graded residential areas from best to hazardous. This study investigated the connection between the proximity of industry to HOLC-graded zones on residential security maps in the top 50 most populous metropolitan regions in the United States in 1930, utilizing both geospatial and textual analysis. In ArcGIS Pro, ModelBuilder was used to automate the process of identifying and separating HOLC graded zones, creating buffers around industrial land use polygons, clipping the buffers to the HOLC graded zones, and calculating the area of the HOLC graded zones in proximity to industrial area. …

What About Tornadoes Makes Cars Fly?, Fred Haan, Minji Lee Jan 2023

What About Tornadoes Makes Cars Fly?, Fred Haan, Minji Lee

Summer Research

Tornadoes move and evolve throughout their lifetime, causing several types of forces against objects. Although vehicles are observed to fly in real tornadoes, simulating this experimentally and numerically has been very difficult – the vehicles do not seem to want to fly. We studied the effect of pressure gradient forces. These have typically been ignored in past simulations, so we estimated them to see if they add the missing force to get things to fly. Some researchers have made mathematical models of tornado wind fields, so we used those models to estimate pressure gradient forces. We also used some full-scale …

SOCI 258: Gender Race and Poverty

From my podcast episode, I was hoping to gain a better understanding of how the local Lewisburg community and its residents view Bucknell students and how they may positively and negatively impact the local area. I want my audience to walk away with a better understanding of how the local community may view us as well as different ways we can improve as a campus community. I had a great experience working with different students and learning about their experiences while also gaining a new perspective myself. I took into consideration my classmates' feedback and adjusted my audio technique to …

Gender And Appropriation Of Public Space In Harare’S Contested Central City Area, Bipasha Baruah Jan 2023

Gender And Appropriation Of Public Space In Harare’S Contested Central City Area, Bipasha Baruah

Data and Test Instruments

Street trading is a highly gendered form of economic activity practiced by the urban poor in most global south cities. Drawing from focus group discussions and in-depth interviews, this paper examines the everyday struggles facing female street traders with children as they negotiate access to contested urban spaces to make a living in Harare’s Central Business District (CBD). The paper argues that public spaces in Harare’s CBD act as both ‘livelihood spaces’ and places of intense vulnerability for women who have caregiving roles. Female street traders struggle to balance between selling their goods as well as watching for municipal surveillance. …

Liaison Librarian Programs As Described On U.S. College And University Library Websites, Julie Arendt, Bettina Peacemaker

VCU Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications

Case studies and surveys describing roles of liaison librarians and structure of liaison librarian programs have generally focused on libraries at large, research-oriented universities. This study was conducted to better understand the role of liaison librarians and the structure of liaison programs across more types of college and university libraries. Listings of liaison librarians on library websites at institutions with a wide range of enrollments were examined. Document analysis was used to observe how common it was for libraries to have such listings, how many liaison librarians were listed, what title was used for the position, what services were described, …

Considering The Shrinking Physical, Social, And Psychological Spaces Of Rohingya Refugees In Southeast Asia, Kendra L. Duran, Robin Al-Haddad, Saleh Ahmed

Global Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

Refugees experience shrinking social, economic, political, and physical spaces at astonishing rates. However, these shrinking spaces are challenging to trace simultaneously and are rarely considered in policymaking or analysis. Using the Rohingya case study, this paper implores policy analysis to include these spaces, conceptually categorizing them into physical, social, and psychological spaces. Here we chronologize the plight of Rohingya refugees and identify how their spaces have changed over time. Our findings reveal four primary causal relationships linked to Rohingya refugees' fluctuating spaces, including: (I) Bangladesh's policy framework has kept the Rohingya largely isolated, yet their public-private partnerships have expanded their …

Prospects For Nuclear Microreactors: A Review Of The Technology, Economics, And Regulatory Considerations, G. Black, D. Shropshire, K. Araújo, A. Van Heek

Economics Faculty Publications and Presentations

The nuclear energy sector is actively developing a new class of very small advanced reactors, called microreactors. This technology has disruptive potential as an alternative to carbon-intensive energy technologies based on its mobility and transportability, resilience, and independence from the grid, as well as its capacity for long refueling intervals and low-carbon emissions. Microreactors may extend nuclear energy to a new set of international customers, many of which are located where energy is at a price premium and/or limited to fossil sources. Developers are creating designs geared toward factory production where quality and costs may be optimized. This paper reviews …

Working With Students From Low Socioeconomic Families: What Can School Counselors Do?, Rachel S. Bluhm Jan 2023

Working With Students From Low Socioeconomic Families: What Can School Counselors Do?, Rachel S. Bluhm

Counselor Education Capstones

Poverty and low socioeconomic status (SES) in America negatively affect students in elementary, middle, and high school as they are still developing. It is crucial that school counselors and other helping professionals are aware of how to best support these students so they can achieve their highest as social support has been shown to be a protective factor for low SES in school. It is essential that school counselors and other staff in schools have effective training surrounding poverty and that they recognize how their social class affects their views and beliefs surrounding poverty and analyze those beliefs and practices. …

Democracy's Other Boundary Problem: The Law Of Disqualification, Tom Ginsburg, Aziz Z. Huq, David Landau Jan 2023

Democracy's Other Boundary Problem: The Law Of Disqualification, Tom Ginsburg, Aziz Z. Huq, David Landau

Scholarly Publications

Almost all national constitutions contain one or more ways to disqualify specific individuals from political office. Indeed, the U.S. Constitution incorporates at least four overlapping pathways toward disqualification. This power of disqualifying specific individuals or groups stands at the heart of the complex project of maintaining democratic rule. In practice, disqualification can work both as an instrument for preserving democratic rule and also as a knife against it. This Article is the first to systematically analyze the complex positive and normative questions raised by disqualification. We offer both a positive account of the function that disqualification plays in constitutional ordering …
