Psychology Or Religion? Bridge-Building In The Translation History Of The Tibetan Book Of The Dead, Erin Prophet
Psychology Or Religion? Bridge-Building In The Translation History Of The Tibetan Book Of The Dead, Erin Prophet
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies Advance Publication Archive
The Tibetan Book of the Dead is one of the most popular Eastern scriptures in the West, in part because it has been framed outside of religion, as a kind of psychology. And yet its translators have also used it to stake claims in the debate about the relationship between psychology and religion, generally Buddhism, but also Theosophy, a religious and philosophical system founded in 1875, which tried to unify all religions. The first major English translation of the Book of the Dead was published in 1927, by W. Y. Evans-Wentz, who was a Theosophist, with the assistance of Kazi …
Zen And The Art Of Doughnut Economics: When Limits Are Strangely Liberating, Peter Doran
Zen And The Art Of Doughnut Economics: When Limits Are Strangely Liberating, Peter Doran
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies Advance Publication Archive
Kate Raworth's celebrated book, Doughnut Economics: Seven ways to think like a 21st century economist, calls for a reconciliation of our design principles for society and the economy with the rhythms and tolerances of ecological systems. It will demand something akin to a new axial revolution that will have to be experienced as much in the body and in the intimacies of a renewed care and appreciation for our relational and ecological selves as in the collective re-design of our societies, democratic decision-making and collective provisioning. Buddhist scholarship offers a distinctive contribution to this conversation invoked in a book that …
Continuities Of Consciousness, Life-Worlds, And Numinous Experience: Cognitive-Phenomenological Foundations For An Empirical Neo-Shamanism, Harry T. Hunt
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies Advance Publication Archive
Numinous experience—as the felt sense of the sacred—evokes feelings of allone unity, communality, humility, and healing. Its schematization in the absolutes of traditional religion can also be seen as all-encompassing symbolic unifications of an otherwise fragmented human life-world—as more analytically depicted in the life-world phenomenologies of Husserl and Heidegger. In both feeling and concept the numinous would be the semantic amplification of the more concrete organism-surround nonduality of non symbolic organisms—as reflected in a primary consciousness shared across Uexkuell’s sentient animal umwelten and Gibson’s “envelopes of flow.” H usserl’s phenomenology of passive synthesis and James on pure experience can be …
Wild Otherness Within: A Jungian And Zen Approach To The Untamed Self In The Ten Oxherding Pictures, Sara Granovetter
Wild Otherness Within: A Jungian And Zen Approach To The Untamed Self In The Ten Oxherding Pictures, Sara Granovetter
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies Advance Publication Archive
The Ten Oxherding Pictures are an ancient allegory for the process of enlightenment. This article analyzes the series of ten paintings through the lenses of Jungian psychology and alterity studies to suggest an unorthodox interpretation of the images. This interpretation highlights the relationship between the oxherd and the ox, suggesting that the ox is a wild other that seeks intersubjective understanding. In questioning the meaning of domestication in these images, this investigation deconstructs the traditional allegory of enlightenment as a process of domestication, suggesting that these images instead point towards the importance of releasing the appropriative attitude. Ultimately, the oxherd …
Simulating Jobs Created By The New York Universal Child Care Act, Brandon Istenes
Simulating Jobs Created By The New York Universal Child Care Act, Brandon Istenes
Theses - Graduate Programs in Economic Theory and Policy
The Universal Child Care Act recently proposed in the New York State Senate would begin the creation of a universal child care system in New York State. This would involve a large scale-up of child care service supply, precipitating a large increase in employment in the child care sector, while increasing wages for jobs in that sector. Who will benefit from these new jobs and wages? We use the Levy Institute Micro Model (LIMM) to simulate the distribution of these new jobs and wages to the population of New York State. Two econometric contributions are made to the LIMM which …
A Narrowing Of The Effects Of The Expanded Child Tax Credit, Julia Ricciarelli
A Narrowing Of The Effects Of The Expanded Child Tax Credit, Julia Ricciarelli
Theses - Graduate Programs in Economic Theory and Policy
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, President Biden under the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 expanded the child tax credit. The temporary expansion increased the amount families would receive for each child, made the credit accessible to lower-income families, and paid out the credit in monthly installments. Throughout this paper, a review of the child tax credit’s history, former eligibility and impacts will be compared to that of the extended policy in 2021. Most importantly, the paper will delve into various groups that received the child tax credit in 2021. Specifically, the effects will be reviewed in terms of …

A Job Guarantee Proposal For Chile, Julius Duran Norasco Ms
Theses - Graduate Programs in Economic Theory and Policy
The Chilean development model have not been able to generate employment for the most impoverished groups. Moreover, Chile is vulnerable to climate change. Therefore, this thesis examines through a heterodox economic lens a Job Guarantee Program for Chile can serve as alternative to promote social inclusion and sustainable development. Using input-output model, the Job Guarantee Program has higher employment creation potential. It can generate 196 jobs per billion pesos, of which 185 are direct jobs and 11 are indirect jobs. There is no economic sector (e.g., construction, services, mining, etc.) with that potential for job creation. Large work programs are …

A Mediation Model Linking Attachment To God, Hope, And Mental Health, Shira Wein M.S.
A Mediation Model Linking Attachment To God, Hope, And Mental Health, Shira Wein M.S.
Selected Full Text Dissertations, 2011-
Insecure attachment style to primary caregivers has consistently been linked with greater vulnerability to adverse mental health outcomes (Mikulincer & Shaver, 2007). Insecure attachment style to God is also associated with deleterious mental health outcomes (Bishop, 2008; Knabb & Pelletier, 2014; Rowatt & Kirkpatrick, 2002; Freeze & DiTommaso, 2014; Wei et al., 2012), but little is known about the mechanism that underlies this relationship. This study examines hope as a psychological strength that mediates the associations between attachment to God and depression, anxiety, and life satisfaction. The study was conducted through an anonymous online survey, surveying individuals above the age …
Accounting Reporting Complexity, Audit Engagement Partner Mandatory Rotation, And Audit Quality, Clement Chen, Zhenfeng Liu, Wenye Tang, Ling Tuo
Accounting Reporting Complexity, Audit Engagement Partner Mandatory Rotation, And Audit Quality, Clement Chen, Zhenfeng Liu, Wenye Tang, Ling Tuo
Accounting Faculty Publications
This paper investigates the influence of a firm's accounting reporting complexity (ARC) on financial statement audit quality. We predict and find that there is a non‐linear relationship between a firm's ARC and audit quality. Specifically, a more complex accounting environment—measured by ARC—leads to higher quality audits, but this effect diminishes when ARC continues to increase. Further analyses reveal that the effect is more salient among client firms that do not purchase non‐audit services (NAS). We also examine whether ARC affects audit quality in the circumstance of mandatory audit partner rotation. Empirical results show a moderating effect of ARC on the …

Will Networks In Military Life Influence Veteran’S Entrepreneurial Intention? Institutional Impacts On Transitional Entrepreneurship, Jamil Kreugel, Timiry R. Tian, Nicklous Salzman, Jing Zhang
College of Business (Strome) Posters
This research studies how military and civilian networks influence military veteran’s perceived resource acquisition and consequently their entrepreneurial intention (EI). Building on social network theory and institutional theory, we argue that the effects of a network consisting of military ties may be more limited than its civilian counterpart in increasing veteran’s EI. The institutional gap between military and civilian life increases the difficulty of making the transition and therefore disconnects the link between one’s military network and their EI via resource acquisition. Using questionnaire survey data collected from 261 veteran students in a public university in the US, we found …

Differences In Relationship And Sexual Satisfaction And Social Support Between Only Lesbian, Mostly Lesbian, And Bisexual Women, Meredith I. Turner, Cassidy M. Sandoval, Charlotte A. Dawson, Kristin E. Heron
College of Sciences Posters
Research suggests relationship and sexual satisfaction and social support are correlated with components of well-being such as anxiety, depression, and physical health. Differences in relationship and sexual satisfaction and social support have been identified between sexual minority women (SMW; i.e., lesbian and bisexual) and heterosexual women. However, classifying SMW into a single group may mask important differences. Further research is needed to better understand the differences in relationship and sexual satisfaction and social support between subgroups of SMW. Thus, the purpose of the present study was to examine differences in these constructs between women who identify as only lesbian, mostly …
Why School Choice Is Necessary For Religious Liberty And Freedom Of Belief, Richard F. Duncan
Why School Choice Is Necessary For Religious Liberty And Freedom Of Belief, Richard F. Duncan
Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications
The government school monopoly for funding K–12 education creates a coercive system that commandeers a captive audience of impressionable children for inculcation in secular ideas, beliefs, and values concerning matters of truth, moral character, culture, and the good life. The brutal bargain imposed on parents by this monopoly requires them to choose between the single largest benefit most families receive from state and local governments and educating their children in a curriculum that is consistent with the preferred educative speech of the parents. To choose the latter is to sacrifice hundreds of thousands of dollars of tax-funded support for K–12 …

Experiencing Dyslexia Through The Prism Of Difference, Keith Murphy
Experiencing Dyslexia Through The Prism Of Difference, Keith Murphy
Articles
According to research by AHEAD (2021), students with specific learning difficulties (SLD) are accessing third level education in greater numbers than ever before. Within the body of research conducted few studies have focused on the overall experiences of students with dyslexia studying in third level education. The current study addresses this gap in knowledge as it provides an insight into how students with dyslexia, as an SLD, navigate third level education. Ethnography was used as the principal method of research in this project, and 17 participants, ranging in age from 20 years old to mid-40 years old, took part. The …

The Roles Of Media Multitasking And Technology Use In Selective Attention And Task Switching, Katina Chris
Honors Undergraduate Theses
A number of studies have explored the impact of multitasking on specific cognitive skills, primarily with regard to non-media multitasking activities. While briefly addressing technology, its use in the modern era regarding media multitasking and its associated cognitive declines has not been extensively examined. Forty-nine participants were required to complete a series of cognitive tasks including the Stroop Color and Word Test and the Trail Making Test. Data were also collected for how often participants media multitask, the amount of technology they use, as well as other demographic variables. The goal of this study was to empirically examine the role …

Selma: A Filmic Description Of History, Hunter L. Tierman
Honors Undergraduate Theses
This thesis will determine the validity of the claim made by Joseph Califano, an aide to President Lyndon Johnson, that the film Selma is not historically accurate, especially regarding the Johnson character. This topic was picked to critique historical accuracy in the film and provide a framework to determine if the film would be suitable for use in an educational setting. This thesis used multiple academic monographs, telephone conversations, interviews, and presidential archives to come to a conclusion. After thorough research, it has been determined that Selma can be used as an educational resource with appropriate cautions stated beforehand regarding …

Researching How Excess Social Media Use And Filters Affect Trust, Ula J. Mccarthy
Honors Undergraduate Theses
In the present day, excessive social media use has become synonymous with the younger generation. Prolonged social media interaction has resulted in new terminology describing the compulsive need for internet and social media use: internet addiction. This is a new term, and while it has not been defined as a clinical addiction used in acute care settings (Zahrai et al., 2022), it is important to understand its symptoms, like excessive social media use. Given the rapid speed of social media integration in modern society, it is important to investigate how excessive social media use (ESMU), as defined by Zahrai et …

Objective: Veterans can present at nongovernment (Department of Defense, Department of Veterans Affairs) mental health agencies with complex symptom constellations that frequently include posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, and generalized anxiety. To date, no veteran study has validated these measures on a treatment-seeking sample of veterans outside the DoD and VA. Methods: We used a treatment-seeking sample of veterans (N = 493) to validate measures that assess these constructs (PTSD Checklist 5, Patient Health Questionnaire-9, and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7). Results: The seven-factor posttraumatic stress disorder hybrid configuration was the best fit. The best fitting model of the depression …
