Translanguaging Or Code-Switching?: A Case Study Of Multilingual Activities In College-Level Mandarin And Japanese Classrooms, Huayu Liu , '23
Translanguaging Or Code-Switching?: A Case Study Of Multilingual Activities In College-Level Mandarin And Japanese Classrooms, Huayu Liu , '23
Senior Theses, Projects, and Awards
Classroom translanguaging has recently gained popularity in ESL and foreign language classrooms, where students come from diverse linguistic backgrounds. In a nutshell, translanguaging researchers highlight an individual’s linguistic repertoire, which goes beyond the boundaries of named languages and focuses on all language elements that an individual knows. As a pedagogy, translanguaging advocates linguistic equity because it encourages students to access their linguistic repertoire, which is not limited to the target language in the classroom. Yet, the viability of this approach in the classroom is unclear, and its distinction from code-switching can also be ambiguous. Therefore, this thesis studies this issue …

Navigating Creative Careers On Social Media: Self-Employment And Neoliberalism, Katherine Carlson , '23
Senior Theses, Projects, and Awards
This thesis describes and analyzes the working conditions of illustrators who work on social media platforms such as YouTube, Instagram, and Patreon. Ultimately, it argues that the perceived perks of self-employment that artists publicly discuss on social media are paradoxical because they are limited by the social media platforms on which the artists post. Additionally, the cons of self-employment artists experience, such as burnout, are systemic issues, even though they are framed as personal problems on social media. The various solutions that artists used throughout the course of this project to combat these issues are individual, rather than collective. Finally, …

Quaker Interpretation: The Role Of Communication And Identity In The Production Of Quaker Values, Katalina I. Kastrong , '23
Quaker Interpretation: The Role Of Communication And Identity In The Production Of Quaker Values, Katalina I. Kastrong , '23
Senior Theses, Projects, and Awards
In this thesis, I examine the shift in Quaker language use over time, focusing on the formation of group identity, the accessibility of Quaker language, and legacy and silence in a history of racial discrimination. These aspects of Quaker practice are crucial in addressing concerns about inclusivity and justice work, providing the potential for greater metalinguistic intentionality. My research analyzes language's role in shaping such attitudes, beliefs, and action. I examine seventeenth century Quakers’ use of Quaker Plain Speech (QPS), observing that the progression towards modern Quaker language is uneven among these three areas of focus. I claim that these …
Cov And Underspecified Nouns: A Syntactic And Semantic Analysis Of Hmong Classifiers, William L. Ball , '23
Cov And Underspecified Nouns: A Syntactic And Semantic Analysis Of Hmong Classifiers, William L. Ball , '23
Senior Theses, Projects, and Awards
Hmong nominal classifiers are quite complex. One clear rule however is that double classifiers are not allowed. Surprisingly, then, there is a double classifier construction involving the classifier cov and underspecified nouns that appears to break these rules. The goal of this thesis is to resolve this problem, syntactically and semantically modeling Hmong classifiers along the way. After giving background on the literature on Hmong classifiers, I develop a syntactic model for Hmong classifiers based on the Minimalist Program and Distributed Morphology, and use Link’s semantic model of plurality to make sure the syntactic model works out semantically. Then I …
Student Satisfaction With Learning Experience And Its Impact On Likelihood Recommending University: Net Promoter Score Approach, Musa Pinar, Coleen Wilder, Matthew Luth, Tulay Girard
Student Satisfaction With Learning Experience And Its Impact On Likelihood Recommending University: Net Promoter Score Approach, Musa Pinar, Coleen Wilder, Matthew Luth, Tulay Girard
AMTP Proceedings 2023
Universities, just like any business, realized the importance and relevance of student satisfaction as well as getting recommended by their students for their long-term success, survival, and growth. This study intends to examine university students’ satisfaction with various aspects of their college learning experience, recommending a university as measured by Net Promoter Score (NPS), and the influence of factors related to student satisfaction on the likelihood of recommending the university. The results of the survey based on 220 responses from current students identify students’ satisfaction with the factors included in the study, where students had the highest satisfaction with feeling …
Female Perpetrators Of Ritually Motivated Pedicide And Mutilation Of Children, Chima Agazue
Female Perpetrators Of Ritually Motivated Pedicide And Mutilation Of Children, Chima Agazue
Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence
Ritually motivated pedicide is among contemporary Africa’s most severe crimes against children. Most of these crimes involve brutal acts of violence or mutilation of the victim. While men are most often the perpetrators of violent crimes, ritually motivated pedicide and mutilation equally attract women. The role of women in these crimes is not restricted to the less violent aspects of the crimes; instead, they also extend to the most brutal elements, often involving mutilation, decapitation or outright murder of the victim. This article explored the involvement of women in these crimes that target children for mutilation and pedicide. The article …

On The Same Team: Technical Services And Student Success Tackle Textbook Affordability, Mallory Jallas, Julie A. Murphy, Rachel Park, Rachel E. Scott, Anne Shelley
Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library
During the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, student textbook access and affordability have emerged as areas of focus for academic libraries to support student success. Librarians across departments at a public four-year institution developed a program to leverage campus information about textbook selection to inform library e-book purchases. The resulting eTextbook collection became an invaluable resource for students during the pandemic and created a direct connection between the work of Technical Services and Student Success. This presentation provides an overview of the project, discusses assessment elements, and highlights the vital aspects of collaboration within an academic library for student success.

Pillage As The Political Economy Of The Kurdish Anfal Genocide, Kaziwa Salih
Pillage As The Political Economy Of The Kurdish Anfal Genocide, Kaziwa Salih
Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal
Scholars are critical of how economists overlook “the questions of genocide,” and of how legislatures have not paid adequate attention to the subject of looting, except in the case of the Armenian genocide. This article, informed by interdisciplinary perspectives, uses government documents, data, and semi-structured interviews to discuss the overlooked triangle of looting, economics, and the Anfal genocide of the Kurds in Iraq. The study refuses to limit itself only to the eight stages of the Anfal genocide that started in 1988, and instead offers data on its preliminary phases which occurred earlier in the 1980s. It then discusses the …
Disrupting The School-To-Prison Pipeline: The Development Of Strong, Stable Relationships, Mackiah Hoff
Disrupting The School-To-Prison Pipeline: The Development Of Strong, Stable Relationships, Mackiah Hoff
Senior Capstone Papers
The “school-to-prison pipeline” is a disturbing national trend where school policies and practices unjustly funnel children—namely children who are Black and Brown and/or have disabilities—into the Juvenile Justice system. Students of color are far more likely to be suspended, expelled, or arrested for the same kind of behavior as their white peers, and youth with disabilities are acutely affected by schools who ignore due process protections. Such students would benefit from extra supports and resources but instead face zero-tolerance policies, exclusionary discipline, and unreasonable difficulties with re-entry into school. The following research presents a review of current literature as it …
Reclaiming Our Streets: A Framework For Mobility Justice, Calah Gipson
Reclaiming Our Streets: A Framework For Mobility Justice, Calah Gipson
Senior Capstone Papers
In contemporary society, cars are regularly considered a way of life; to many, it is customary–or even necessary– to own one. A lack of public transportation options or non-auto focused infrastructure has created a society that highly values cars, resulting in a largely car-dependent nation. Despite this, there are still many who do not drive– whether by necessity or by choice. In order to move away from an over-prevalence of cars towards a more holistic balance in U.S. communities, a people-first outlook on streets must be purposefully demonstrated. But before a shift is made from car dependency to walkable and …
When The Victim Is Male: An Organizational Approach To Combat Gender Bias Within The Criminal Justice System, Shelby Hobbs
When The Victim Is Male: An Organizational Approach To Combat Gender Bias Within The Criminal Justice System, Shelby Hobbs
Senior Capstone Papers
The National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey estimates that over 226.1 million people have been victims of domestic violence (DV) throughout their lifetimes. This violence can present itself in physical abuse or emotional turmoil, all with the ultimate goal of a perpetrator maintaining power over their victim(s). Rates of victimization across men and women are similar—44.2% and 47.3% respectively; however, this is not reflected in the current research and service provisions for victims. For example, male-identifying victims within the criminal justice system have reported their innocence must be proved before their claims of abuse are taken seriously, and that …
Racial Bias And Death Penalty Cases: A Soar Analysis Of Post-Conviction, Ashley Mcilvaine
Racial Bias And Death Penalty Cases: A Soar Analysis Of Post-Conviction, Ashley Mcilvaine
Senior Capstone Papers
Racial discrimination is a far-reaching issue that adversely impacts individuals, groups, and communities across multiple domains. It is defined by the Equality and Human Rights Commission as being treated differently because of one’s race. For decades, discriminatory policies have been codified into institutional processes which disadvantage people of color. This is particularly evident in the criminal justice system. Examples of practices that disproportionately impact intentionally marginalized populations include issues of excess force and police brutality, sentencing disparities for minor offenses or drug charges, and state sanctioned capital punishment. While these forms of discrimination are often labeled as explicit and overt …
Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome's Interaction With Foster Care: Exploring Challenges And Improving Outcomes, Kennedy E. Bradshaw
Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome's Interaction With Foster Care: Exploring Challenges And Improving Outcomes, Kennedy E. Bradshaw
Senior Capstone Papers
Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) diagnoses in the United States, especially in rural areas have skyrocketed in recent years in conjunction with the increase in opioid use disorders. Neonates born with this condition possess a plethora of needs. The literature indicates the effects of NAS on substance-exposed infants are shown to have negative physical, cognitive, behavioral, and educational effects throughout the life course. Children with a NAS diagnosis are more likely to be involved in the foster care system due to stigma and legal implications facing the biological mothers of this population. The proposed intervention setting is AGAPE, which employs social …
Effects Of Adverse Childhood Experiences In Relation To Domestic Violence Services, Mary Hill
Effects Of Adverse Childhood Experiences In Relation To Domestic Violence Services, Mary Hill
Senior Capstone Papers
Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), described as traumatic experiences happening within childhood in a study conducted by Kaiser Permanente and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, are delved into in relation to the effects of trauma on well-being and individual health. A literature review is conducted around ACEs within an environment where domestic violence or interpersonal violence is present exploring the dynamics between the two, societal and generational influences, and present preventative approaches utilizing knowledge around both domestic violence and ACEs. Based on information found through a review of literature, an intervention is proposed in the form of an Awareness …
Autism Spectrum Disorder: The Gap Between Specialized And General School Systems, Alexis Ketterman
Autism Spectrum Disorder: The Gap Between Specialized And General School Systems, Alexis Ketterman
Senior Capstone Papers
Functionality, communication, socialization, and the ability to have some degree of independence are common attributes that many may not take the time to consider. However, for individuals who are autistic, these attributes are critical to forming secure relationships and successfully adapting across the lifespan. The two primary care systems paramount in supporting and nurturing social competence for children include general and specialized school systems. General school systems may not always have a well-developed understanding or awareness around a particular diagnosis or developmental disability; however, they may have a holistic special education program. Specialized schools often have access to trained professionals …
A Flood Of Information: Assessing The Effectiveness Of An Enhanced Flash Flood Warning Social Media Graphic, Christopher John Long
A Flood Of Information: Assessing The Effectiveness Of An Enhanced Flash Flood Warning Social Media Graphic, Christopher John Long
Theses and Dissertations
Flash flooding is the most frequent and damaging type of severe weather globally. In the United States, heat is the only weather-related cause of death more frequent than flooding. However, while the number of deaths associated with other types of severe weather has decreased since the 1950s, the number of flash flood-related deaths has remained steady. Therefore, there exists a need to improve flash flood warning communication.
In this project, it is hypothesized that improving the National Weather Service’s flash flood warning social media graphic by including areas that commonly flood may increase individuals’ perceived storm risk, their intended compliance …

The Role Of Aesthetics In Redesigning Accessible Information Literacy Modules, Rachel E. Trnka
Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
The outbreak of COVID-19 added an increased sense of urgency to creating accessible online materials for higher education professionals, including academic librarians, as they explored new ways to engage with users online. Librarians who relied on in-person sessions to provide information literacy instruction to students shifted to synchronous and asynchronous instruction methods. This paper shares the experiences of an instruction librarian tasked with evaluating and redesigning a set of asynchronous information literacy modules for first-year undergraduate students in the summer of 2020. The evaluation and redesign were informed by contemporary debates about the design of online instructional materials from a …
Simple Darwin Core For Non-Biologists Primer, Megan N. O'Donnell, Leslie M. Delserone
Simple Darwin Core For Non-Biologists Primer, Megan N. O'Donnell, Leslie M. Delserone
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications
This primer focuses on Simple DwC (http://rs.tdwg.org/dwc/terms/simple/), a “mechanism used to share biodiversity information using the simplest methods and structure” (Darwin Core Task Group, 2014). With Simple DwC, the DwC schema is applied to a single flat file (i.e., table or spreadsheet). Because it is a self-contained data set that can be opened, edited, and analyzed using a wide variety of software, Simple DwC is easier to implement than other forms of DwC that use XML, RDF, or relational databases. The primer’s goal is to assist a curator presented with a data set structured in Simple DwC, or …

“Research Is Not Innocent”: A Review Of Thalia Mulvihill And Raji Swaminathan’S Collaborative Qualitative Research, Daniel P. Wulff
The Qualitative Report
Mulvihill and Swaminathan have written a wide-ranging book that takes a close look at how qualitative research can be collaborative and what implications come from how collaborative practices are taken up. While taking an appreciative stance toward collaborative research practices, they do not shy away from the challenges and unrealized potentials that are involved. This book serves as both an introduction to the basics of collaborative qualitative research and an in-depth look at the issues for the more experienced collaborative researcher.
Maximising Effectiveness Of Talent Pools Through Mindfulness: An Empirical Investigation In A Multinational Corporation, Tarmo Raudsepp
Maximising Effectiveness Of Talent Pools Through Mindfulness: An Empirical Investigation In A Multinational Corporation, Tarmo Raudsepp
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
Traditional human resource management is looking to identify and develop talent for maximising human capital in a competitive environment with limited resources and negative demographic trends. Attracting, deploying, motivating, developing and retaining talented employees is a corporate norm for meeting organisational goals. Proper human resource processes through rigorous mapping of employees according to the performance-potential matrix allow the grading of employees against peer groups to establish talent pools for development and internal succession planning.
Mindfulness originates from 2,500-year-old Buddhist spiritual practices and has a rare combination of spirituality and science. Eastern perspective originates from Asian traditions focusing on the self-regulation …
The Impact Of Subordinates’ Proactive Personality On Empowering Leadership, Xin Zhan
The Impact Of Subordinates’ Proactive Personality On Empowering Leadership, Xin Zhan
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
Research has documented numerous benefits of proactive personality for employees’ job outcomes. However, the success of proactive employees largely depends on their leaders’ empowerment. Extant research has focused on the bright side of proactive personality for inducing empowerment, without considering its risks. We thus have an incomplete understanding of the effects of employees’ proactive personality on empowering leadership. I take a balanced perspective on proactive personality and propose that proactive personality has an inverted U-shaped relationship with empowering leadership, such that empowering leadership is highest when proactive personality is at a moderate level. I argue that leader-member exchange (LMX) mediates …
