Pre-Med Mentorship Program Proposal, William T. Wallick

IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects

This service-learning project surveyed undergraduate students as well as Boise State alumni about a prospective Pre-Med mentorship program being implemented at Boise State University. Aspiring medical school students at Boise State University lack the connections and relationships with upperclassmen and alumni to help prepare them to be competitive applicants. My project proposes a Pre-Med mentorship program to be implemented at Boise State University in the fall semester of the 2024 school year.

Do Travel Costs Matter For Persons With Lower Incomes? Using Psychological And Social Equity Perspectives To Evaluate The Effects Of A Low-Income Transit Fare Program On Low-Income Riders, Katharine Mcmahon, Morgan Taylor, Liu-Qin Yang, Liming Wang, Aaron Golub, Greg Townley Apr 2023

Do Travel Costs Matter For Persons With Lower Incomes? Using Psychological And Social Equity Perspectives To Evaluate The Effects Of A Low-Income Transit Fare Program On Low-Income Riders, Katharine Mcmahon, Morgan Taylor, Liu-Qin Yang, Liming Wang, Aaron Golub, Greg Townley

TREC Final Reports

Objective: Access to transit can deliver a host of benefits to the riders and to the region. Previous research aiming to study these benefits has primarily relied on data collected from the opening of new routes or transit systems and focused on the general population. Little is known how low-income riders (LIR) react and benefit in response to when the cost barrier to access to transit is removed. With an intention to increase ridership while addressing the needs of transit-dependent riders in the region, TriMet (Portland, OR) expanded the Honored Citizens Program (HCP) in July 2018 to include low-income …

The Relationship Between Childhood Maltreatment And A Woman’S Desire To Have Children, Tayah Simpson Apr 2023

The Relationship Between Childhood Maltreatment And A Woman’S Desire To Have Children, Tayah Simpson

Psychology | Student Research Posters

One life task for many adults, especially women, is the task of parenting. Many factors can be associated with becoming a parent, but one of the most foundational is the desire to have children.

Rholes et al (1997) concluded that regardless of attachment style, a lower desire for children was associated with more negative perceptions of parenting abilities.

Harel and Finzi-Dottan (2018) found that a history of childhood maltreatment was associated with viewing parenting as potentially threatening.

Bailey et al (2012) found that;

  • emotional abuse, neglect, and witnessing family violence were associated with hostility towards future children
  • a mother’s experience …

Luck Egalitarianism And Non-Overlapping Generations, Elizabeth Finneron-Burns Apr 2023

Luck Egalitarianism And Non-Overlapping Generations, Elizabeth Finneron-Burns

Political Science Publications

This paper argues that there are good reasons to limit the scope of luck egalitarianism to co-existing people. First, I outline reasons to be sceptical about how “luck” works intergenerationally and therefore the very grounding of luck egalitarianism between non-overlapping generations. Second, I argue that what Kasper Lippert-Rasmussen calls the “core luck egalitarian claim” allows significant intergenerational inequality which is a problem for those who object to such inequality. Third, luck egalitarianism cannot accommodate the intuition that it might be required to leave future generations better off than we are, even if it would come at no cost to ourselves. …

Financial Advisory Firm: Mark's Financial Solutions, Mark Y. Foruria Apr 2023

Financial Advisory Firm: Mark's Financial Solutions, Mark Y. Foruria

IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects

This business plan project provides research on financial advisor firms, financial education and literacy and money management in American society. There are numerous tools and resources available to become financially independent and literate. The problem is that all this information does not reach the communities that need them the most (low-income), especially the youth because it is not taught in school. To address the financial illiteracy issue among the American population I created a business plan, offering the financial services the people need most. At the same time, I created this capstone project doing some research on people's financial health …

The Self And Individualism: An Analysis On The Current Regulations Of Academic Writing, Bonnibel S. H. Walker Apr 2023

The Self And Individualism: An Analysis On The Current Regulations Of Academic Writing, Bonnibel S. H. Walker

WRIT: Journal of First-Year Writing

Individualism, the focus or emphasis on the self, is a highly discussed and debated topic in writing. This is mostly regarding how the self should be addressed and utilized in writing. Although it there is also debate about what the self truly is, and how one can represent it in their work, veering into more abstract thought and theorizing.

The amount of individualism, or the “self” that one is able to, or should imprint onto one’s writing varies widely across numerous genres of academic writing, or even writing in general. For example, in much of scientific writing there’s a broad …

Examining The Effectiveness Of Marketing Practices Of A Nonprofit Institution Of Higher Education: Internal Service Provider, Doreen E. Sams, Mary Kay Rickard, Kendra K. Evans

Atlantic Marketing Journal

Abstract - Quality education is the sum of Institutions of Higher Education’s (IHE) parts, including classroom instruction and internal services, that are key to a student’s success during and after college. The purpose of this study is to address an understudied sector in the nonprofit marketing literature (i.e., Institutions of Higher Education internal service providers). The current study extends Dakouan et al. (2019) work by examining the marketing efforts of an IHE’s career services center’s effectiveness in creating awareness and increasing attendance at career events. The study focuses on outbound marketing strategies addressing the research question “to what extent are …

Comparison Of Channel Catfish Populations In Two Northeast Kansas Impoundments, Ethan Thompson Apr 2023

Comparison Of Channel Catfish Populations In Two Northeast Kansas Impoundments, Ethan Thompson

2023 Midwest Ecology & Evolution Conference

In the summer of 2022, we sampled Channel Catfish populations at Brown State Fishing Lake and Sabetha City Lake, both located in Northeast Kansas. These impoundments are similar only in latitude and size with several differences in their fish populations, specifically with Channel Catfish. One is stocked annually with 200 mm intermediate Channel Catfish and the other is not. Surprisingly, the impoundment that is not stocked has a higher density of fish than the impoundment that is. This poster will present age, growth, length, and weight information and make inferences on the impacts of population density on those metrics.

Does The Genome Of A Putatively Specialist Moth (Schinia Gracilenta) Contain A Signal Of The Indigenous Cultivation Of Its Host Plant (Iva Annua), Wren Renquist Apr 2023

Does The Genome Of A Putatively Specialist Moth (Schinia Gracilenta) Contain A Signal Of The Indigenous Cultivation Of Its Host Plant (Iva Annua), Wren Renquist

2023 Midwest Ecology & Evolution Conference

When one species depends on one another for survival, they may have shared demographic histories. Further, when symbionts have shorter life spans, their rate of evolution may be quicker than that of their hosts. For this reason, detecting a recent demographic signal in a symbiont’s genome may often be easier than directly studying the host.

Here I study the slender flower moth (Schinia gracilenta) and its host plant, sumpweed (Iva annua). Sumpweed is thought to have been cultivated in North American ca. 5000 BC - AD 1700 and its range may have been expanded during this time. I collected S. …

Anthropogenic Influences Of Play In The Green Monkeys Of Barbados, Rose Amrhein Apr 2023

Anthropogenic Influences Of Play In The Green Monkeys Of Barbados, Rose Amrhein

2023 Midwest Ecology & Evolution Conference

There are multiple theories behind the evolutionary origins and functions of play behavior in the animal kingdom, all with varying levels of support. Some argue play originated as a byproduct of individuals having excess energy in a resource-rich environment while others argue it arose as a way for young individuals to enhance the physical and mental skills needed to survive into adulthood. Many believe that both these theories are coexisting and applicable to some degree. However, previous play studies usually focused on one group of organisms, failing to consider how animals’ environment directly impacts the structure of their play and …

Assessing The Health And Behavioral Effects Of Turtle Racing On Eastern Box Turtles (Terrapene Carolina), Michelle K. Weaver Apr 2023

Assessing The Health And Behavioral Effects Of Turtle Racing On Eastern Box Turtles (Terrapene Carolina), Michelle K. Weaver

2023 Midwest Ecology & Evolution Conference

Turtle racing involves the public capturing largely wild-caught box turtles (Terrapene spp.) and racing them at standalone events or at races incorporated into larger family events (e.g., festivals). These turtle races are legal in most states because of a lack of regulations and/or funding to enforce regulations that may exist. Moreover, we lack information on the potential effects (e.g., disease transmission, survival, movements, and general health) of races on the turtles that could help support the implementation of regulations. Our objective was to understand the short-term and long-term health and behavioral effects of turtle races on eastern box turtles (Terrapene …

Field Research Safety And Community Engagement, Reyna Tlamasico, Tristan Ferguson Apr 2023

Field Research Safety And Community Engagement, Reyna Tlamasico, Tristan Ferguson

2023 Midwest Ecology & Evolution Conference

Community engagement and safety are an important aspect of GPS tree logging fieldwork. As part of the Green Heart Louisville Project, we conducted field work to GPS log trees and conducted concurrent community engagement and implemented a health and safety plan (HASP). To make ourselves visible to the community, we made it a requirement to always wear visible Green Heart branding, such as t-shirts, hats, and backpacks. We fielded many inquiries about our presence, so we would politely inform them about why we were there, what we were doing, and explain to them about the nature of the Green Heart …

Effects Of Paternal Heat Exposure And Parental Care On The Development Of Offspring In Gasterosteus Aculeatus, Emma Borgert Apr 2023

Effects Of Paternal Heat Exposure And Parental Care On The Development Of Offspring In Gasterosteus Aculeatus, Emma Borgert

2023 Midwest Ecology & Evolution Conference

Humans are profoundly altering the abundance and distribution of organisms via climate change. In particular, warming temperatures are affecting marine and freshwater ecosystems by increasing physiological stress, limiting growth, and decreasing dissolved oxygen. With all this change occurring, an understanding of how organisms are going to cope is crucial. Transgenerational plasticity – when parental experiences alter offspring traits - can allow organisms to rapidly adapt to environmental change. Previous literature has focused on the role of maternal experiences on offspring traits, but paternal experiences are just as important. Fathers can influence their offspring in multiple ways, including changes via both …

The Influence Of Urban Landscape Characteristics And Regional Climate On Bee Diversity, Bridget T. Harter Apr 2023

The Influence Of Urban Landscape Characteristics And Regional Climate On Bee Diversity, Bridget T. Harter

2023 Midwest Ecology & Evolution Conference

When compared to the lack of resources within homogeneous agricultural lands, cities can serve as a refuge for insect pollinators by providing a variety of floral and nesting resources. Areas of intense urbanization, with a high percentage of impervious surface, reduce the size and quality of pollinator habitat and negatively impact pollinators. The spatial complexity within and between urban landscapes may explain this contradictory view of cities as detrimental and beneficial for insect pollinators. This study examines the influence of (1) the spatial configuration of nearby, herbaceous vegetation and (2) regional climate on bee diversity across cities. Bee abundance and …

Colorimetric Redox Reactions To Determine Base Composition In Unknown Monomeric Dna Samples, James T. Dials, Mara J. Stout, Elizabeth M. Thomas

2023 Celebration of Student Scholarship - Poster Presentations

Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) codes for proteins using a unique order of four major nitrogenous bases adenine, thymine, cytosine, and guanine. In several biological applications, such as the determination of DNA stability, production of biologic based drugs, and even taxonomic reorganization of species, it becomes necessary to understand the relative amounts of each nucleotide in a DNA sample, regardless of their sequence. However, most assays used to determine base composition use expensive equipment, harsh chemicals, and advanced computer software. In addition, the determination of base composition is an important educational tool in undergraduate laboratories, but these limitations are infeasible for many …
