Solutions To The Water Crisis By Cache Valley Residents, Marinda Lamb, Brooke Piippo

Student Research Symposium

Cache Valley is full of water, yet has been plagued by the water crisis like much of the Western United States. We employed a few different methods to interview residents of Cache Valley, separating them into groups of community members, water managers, and farmers. In our research we attempted to determine how each of these groups thought the water crisis should be solved.

Grounded In Reality: An Exploration Of Acceptance In Relational Conflict, Audrey Johansen Apr 2023

Grounded In Reality: An Exploration Of Acceptance In Relational Conflict, Audrey Johansen

Student Research Symposium

Acceptance work encompasses “the processes that allow us to be fully grounded in reality” (Canfield, 2023). It allows individuals to embrace what truly is, both the good and the bad. It enables them to be at peace with what they can’t control, so that they can put their energy into changing what is within their power. This project explores how acceptance work connects with other aspects of conflict process, including grieving, emotional regulation, and other concepts. Research was conducted by studying materials on communication and conflict processes, and by applying the materials to the author’s life. Throughout the course of …

Cultural Models Of Water In Northern Utah, Dorie Pardone, Jacob Martin, Brelle Christensen, Kayla Warren

Student Research Symposium

Water heritage studies serve as a nexus for research and applied sciences to understand myriad roles that water functions in everyday life. The Water Heritage Anthropological Project evaluates dimensions of water, its infrastructure, and management practices through an interdisciplinary lens. We report on ethnographic work from northern Utah where we conducted semi-structured interviews with three different categories of water users: farmers, water managers, and community members. Our work identifies cultural dimensions of water identity that study participants use to describe their relationship with water. We discuss the social, economic, and environmental implications for communities in the Mountain West.

Heart2heart Online: A Discrimination-Based Stress Reduction Intervention For People Of Color, Shari Linares Apr 2023

Heart2heart Online: A Discrimination-Based Stress Reduction Intervention For People Of Color, Shari Linares

Student Research Symposium

The purpose of this project was to extend prior work on developing an intervention to reduce discrimination-based stress, moving from Latinx college students to a broader audience of people of color. In addition, moving the intervention online from a face-to-face modality allowed the researchers to have a broader reach, thus broader impact and larger reach. The original intervention, Heart 2 Heart was developed for in-person delivery prior to the COVID-19 pandemic (Domenech Rodríguez Linares, 2020a). A single-subject design evaluation showed some evidence of promise in reducing discrimination-based stress, however, the project was cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic. Since then, …

Social Media And Marketing For Social Workers, Megan Bolan, Jaylee Cox Apr 2023

Social Media And Marketing For Social Workers, Megan Bolan, Jaylee Cox

Student Research Symposium

Marketing for non-profits is an extremely important task for an organization to function well, and social media, in the last decade, has become an important tool for marketing. Through work with the Clinical & Social Work Association (CSWA), it was realized that there is very little information on how to effectively market non-profit organizations such as CSWA to social workers and social work students. There is also little information on how to increase engagement with social workers through social media. We conducted our research using a logic branching mixed methods Qualtrics survey, targeting social workers (licensed or unlicensed) and social …

Analyzing State Reactions To Panserbjørne Coup: A Case Study In Realism, Athena Dupont, Lyra Belacqua Silvertongue

Student Research Symposium

In a global climate of instability and increasingly volatile political shifts in both election-based and non-election-based governments, it is critical to understand how states react to sudden changes in leadership in other nations. While there are numerous theories that try to account for the decision-making processes on an international scale, few of them withstand application to historical case studies. One such study, the 1990s overthrow of Svalbard's King Iofur Raknison by the disgraced former king Iorek Byrnison, offers unique insight into the reactions of other nations. While the Panserbjørne nation is not generally considered a world power, its regional hegemony …

Eating Disorders, Depression, And Anxiety: A Multivariate Survey Of College Students, Adam Bretton Apr 2023

Eating Disorders, Depression, And Anxiety: A Multivariate Survey Of College Students, Adam Bretton

Undergraduate Research Competition

Mental illness is America's leading cause of disability (Rehm & Shield, 2019). Of particular concern is the finding that more than 60% of college students meet the criteria for one or more mental illnesses, an increase of nearly 50% from 2013 (Lipson et al., 2022). Young adults, particularly young women, are vulnerable to anxiety, depression, and eating disorders [ED(s)] (De Young, 2017). Given the high incidence of depression, anxiety, EDs, their comorbidities, and their profound effect, their correlation must be thoroughly investigated, especially in a highly susceptible college-aged population (Sander et al., 2021). This study examines the relationship between anxiety, …

The Impact Of Prc Language Policies On Minority Languages Of China, Margaret Shoop Apr 2023

The Impact Of Prc Language Policies On Minority Languages Of China, Margaret Shoop

Undergraduate Research Competition

While language is often used as a tool to bring people together and celebrate differences, language can also be weaponized and used to suppress minority groups of people. There are over three hundred unique languages and dialects spoken in Mainland China, with Mandarin Chinese being the most widely spoken of the languages. Mandarin is the official state language of the People’s Republic of China (PRC), and it is also the primary language taught in schools across the country. Despite official Chinese policy of teaching Mandarin Chinese alongside local dialects, Mandarin is favored over minority languages. The unequal emphasis on Mandarin …

Ecofeminism: Gender And Word Associations, Caroline Murray Apr 2023

Ecofeminism: Gender And Word Associations, Caroline Murray

Undergraduate Research Competition

Ecofeminism is the environmental philosophy that finds an association between nature and the female gender in society. Using correlational design, in the current study the associations between gender and nature terms and gender and occupations were examined in 106 college aged students (Mage = 19 years, 4 months, 10% male, 89% female, 79% White). Using a word association test created for the use in the current study, participants reported their association between nature terms, human-made terms, and occupations using a 11-response scale ranging from 0= "Little to no association" (low masculinity, low femininity) to 10= "Masculine" or "Feminine." Findings indicated …

The Influence Of Alcohol-Related Advertisements On College Students Behaviors And Attitudes, Meghan Mcdonald Apr 2023

The Influence Of Alcohol-Related Advertisements On College Students Behaviors And Attitudes, Meghan Mcdonald

Honors Projects in Communication

College students have been exposed to alcohol-related advertisements for several decades now and research has proven that this exposure has an influence on today’s population’s knowledge, attitudes, and intentions to drink (Saffer, 2002). The college student population has been shown to participate in excessive drinking leading to other potential risks and harms, such as increased rates of depression (Furr et al., 2001; Hingson, 2009). Furthermore, students who experience depressive symptoms may experience elevated risks for alcohol-related problems (Joiner et al., 1992). The goal of this paper is to examine different persuasion techniques that alcohol companies currently expose to college students …

Exploring The Association Of Brownfield Remediation Status With Socioeconomic Conditions In Wayne County, Mi, Brendan F. O'Leary, Alex B. Hill, Colleen Linn, Mei Lu, Carol J. Miller, Andrew Newman, F. Gianluca Sperone, Qiong Zhang

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Research Publications

Urban neighborhoods with locations of environmental contamination, known as brownfields, impact entire neighborhoods, but corrective environmental remedial action on brownfields is often tracked on an individual property basis, neglecting the larger neighborhood-level impact. This study addresses this impact by examining spatial differences between brownfields with unmitigated environmental concerns (open site) and sites that are considered fully mitigated or closed in urban neighborhoods (closed site) on the US census tract scale in Wayne County, MI. Michigan’s Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy’s leaking underground storage tank (LUST) database provided brownfield information for Wayne County. Local indicators of spatial association (LISA) …

Connecting Beliefs, Mindsets, Anxiety, And Self-Efficacy In Computer Science Learning: An Instrument For Capturing Secondary School Students’ Self-Beliefs, Luis Morales-Navarro, Michael T. Giang, Deborah A. Fields, Yasmin B. Kafai

Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications

Background and Context

Few instruments exist to measure students’ CS engagement and learning especially in areas where coding happens with creative, project-based learning and in regard to students’ self-beliefs about computing.

Objective

We introduce the CS Interests and Beliefs Inventory (CSIBI), an instrument designed for novice secondary students to learn by designing projects (particularly with physical computing).. The inventory contains subscales on beliefs on problem solving competency, fascination in design, value of CS, creative expression, and beliefs about context-specific CS abilities alongside programming mindsets and outcomes. We explain the creation of the instrument and attend to the role of mindsets …

Financial Rewards Tied To Quality Measures Lead Home Health Agencies To Exaggerate Their Improvements, Jun Li, Meher Chahal Apr 2023

Financial Rewards Tied To Quality Measures Lead Home Health Agencies To Exaggerate Their Improvements, Jun Li, Meher Chahal

Population Health Research Brief Series

More than 4 million people in the United States use home health care each year, but the quality varies and is often poor. In 2016, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) began rewarding and penalizing home health agencies for their performance on a set of predetermined quality measures in an experiment called the Home Health Value-Based Purchasing (HHVBP) program. This brief summarizes the results of a recent study evaluating the program’s impact on quality measures within the HHVBP and whether there was a relationship between incentive size and apparent quality. Findings suggest that while financial rewards improved the …

The Politics Of Daca: Explaining Variation In Republican Support For Daca, Diana Gonzales Apr 2023

The Politics Of Daca: Explaining Variation In Republican Support For Daca, Diana Gonzales

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This study examines political divisions among Republicans regarding DACA. To begin with, I provide a historical account of the issue and its importance. Then a survey experiment is conducted, surveying 901 Republicans, and randomly assigning half to the Republican treatment and half to the Democratic treatment. Results indicate that exposure to the Republican treatment increased the likelihood of supporting policies for DACA recipients. Furthermore, knowing a DACA recipient positively impacted attitudes toward DACA policy regardless of treatment. These findings shed light on the complexities of political polarization and immigration policy.

Environment and Society Student Research

This paper outlines a proposal, based on Blackfoot worldview, for a collective method to stand alongside Western qualitative and quantitative methods and highlights the value of collective methods in collaborative social-ecological research. Neither qualitative nor quantitative methods are adequate to disclose a world where all things are alive, where “objects” are subjects—agentive beings in their own right. Most Indigenous cultures understand and experience the world as a network of living beings, a collective, with whom they are interrelated/connected and therefore, any efforts to collaborate with Indigenous peoples must acknowledge comprehensive relational animacy. Applying coproduction principles in concert with Blackfoot ways …

What Doesn’T Kill You Makes You Stronger: The Shifting Strategies Of Japan’S Yakuza In Response To Economic Globalization And Securitization, Benjamin P. Murkison

Honors College Theses

The Yakuza in Japan is a deeply traditional and infamous ethnic mafia, which has historically based their profits off of the protection of gambling rings and street vendors, but have developed into one of the most sophisticated and wealthy criminal institutions in the world. Reaching their peak in the 1960’s with around 200,000 members, the Yakuza has been in a slow decline ever since. However, the past decade has seen the most dramatic drop in Yakuza numbers in recorded history, as a result of increasing securitization by the Japanese state. As their power has declined within Japan, they have only …
