The Influence Of Parasocial Relationships On Celebrity Credibility And Consumer Behavior Before And After A Tv Show Finale, Renzo Josh M. Bugarin, Quijana Jynnyll A. Samilo, Articus Filipe E. Tolentino

DLSU Senior High School Research Congress

Parasocial relationships (PSR) are characterized by the feeling of intimacy or personal connection by media consumers to media characters through one-sided interactions. In recent years, studies revealed that people have become increasingly dependent on online personas or celebrities to seek comfort and fulfill self-indulgent interactions during the pandemic. However, previous literature on PSR fails to monitor the development of investigated factors over impactful changes in the media such as the airing of a finale. This study is therefore conducted to fulfill two main objectives: a) to determine the relationship of PSR with celebrity credibility and consumer behavior and b) to …

Motivational Factors And Participation Of Senior High School Students In Attending Online Masses, Yuval C. Adera, Herlyn Angel P. Barilla

DLSU Senior High School Research Congress

The COVID-19 Pandemic has prompted the suspension of masses. Thus, this started online masses and has been used by schools to allow students to attend virtually the sacraments. The study investigates how motivated and participative students are in online masses. The researchers investigated the degree of motivation and level of participation of students, the differences when grouped according to the demographics, and if there exists a significant relationship between the two. A study from Dioso (2014) has specified four motivational factors for students to attend masses: requirement, meaningfulness, liturgical celebration, and parental influence, and served as the main theoretical framework …

YouTube has even been a popular video streaming site while students are in distance learning. Distance learning is a new way of delivering quality and safe education in the Philippine context. However, many students still struggle in this kind of learning setup. SHS students can use YouTube as an alternative medium to gain educational videos without limitations innovatively. Despite this, studies conducted in DepEd Rizal regarding the importance of YouTube in distance learning are scant. This current study aims to qualitatively discover the significance of YouTube among SHS students in times of pandemic. Fifty senior high school students from different …

DLSU Senior High School Research Congress

The pandemic has forced every student enrolled in schools in the Philippines to study under the Flexible Model of Learning. Though a typical senior high school student seemed content with the teaching method, they appeared troubled by the constraints arising from their residence’s environment. The learning setups and space appeared inadequate and uncomfortable for their schooling and needs. The paper aimed to propose a home learning setup which considered all the possible factors affecting it, was DIY (do-it-yourself) ready, utilized cost-effective materials, and adhered to a positive level of acceptance from the target audience. Surveys were distributed to Senior High …

Identifying And Localizing Multiple Objects Using Artificial Ventral And Dorsal Visual Cortical Pathways, Zhixian Han, Anne Sereno

MODVIS Workshop

We concluded in our previous study that model cortical visual pathways actively retained information differently according to the different goals of the training tasks. One limitation of our study was that there was only one object in each input image whereas in reality there may be multiple objects in a scene. In our current study, we try to find a brain-like algorithm that can recognize and localize multiple objects.

Beta-Alanine Supplementation And Anaerobic Performance In Highly Trained Judo Athletes, Mateusz Halz, Magdalena Kaszuba, Jonatan Helbin, Sara Krzysztofik, Aleksandra Suchanecka, Adam Zając

Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity

Introduction. Previous studies have shown that several weeks of beta-alanine (BA) supplementation increases anaerobic work capacity and decreases muscular fatigue, but limited research was conducted on elite martial arts athletes. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of chronic BA supplementation on high-intensity intermittent upper and lower-body performance in highly-trained judo athletes. Material and Methods: Sixteen elite judo athletes (21.8 ± 2.5 years old) were randomly assigned to receive either BA (4 g/d over the first 2 weeks and 6 g/d in the last 2 weeks) or placebo for 4 weeks. Before and after BA supplementation, …

The Threat Of Returning To “Normal”: Resisting Ableism In The Post-Covid Classroom, Sarah M. Parsloe, Elizabeth M. Smith May 2022

The Threat Of Returning To “Normal”: Resisting Ableism In The Post-Covid Classroom, Sarah M. Parsloe, Elizabeth M. Smith

Feminist Pedagogy

The abrupt switch to online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted pervasive ableism; accommodations that had been “impossible” were suddenly available. This critical commentary draws from interviews with 16 students and our own ethnographic accounts as student/professor to understand how COVID shaped disabled experiences in the classroom. As a student with a disability, Elizabeth was hyperaware of her vulnerability to illness, but also experienced herself as less impaired online. She could control her learning environment to minimize sensory and mobility challenges. Additionally, professors’ flexible policies helped her to manage energy, time, and symptoms. However, Elizabeth and her peers feared an …

Witnessing Engaged Voices: A Feminist Pedagogy Of Inclusion, Alana M. Nicastro, Patricia Geist-Martin May 2022

Witnessing Engaged Voices: A Feminist Pedagogy Of Inclusion, Alana M. Nicastro, Patricia Geist-Martin

Feminist Pedagogy

When student perspectives, needs, and wants are left out of academic discourse, the discursive structures necessary to encourage, organize, and evaluate their voice are absent. Students then become ambivalent instead of exercising their voice and decisively assessing the value of their contributions. This original teaching activity targets the problematics that constrain voices in the classroom and invites readers and listeners to consider their positionality and action as a commitment to a Feminist Pedagogy of Inclusion (FPoI). In this way, students and professors can deliberately hold a space where the act of witnessing is more than simply observing voice. The intended …

Probing For Holes In The 100-Year-Old Baseball Exemption: A New Post-Alston Challenge, Sam C. Ehrlich

University of Cincinnati Law Review

As professional baseball’s unique exemption to antitrust law celebrates its one-hundredth year of existence, it faces a new attack in Nostalgia Partners v. Office of the Commissioner of Baseball, a claim by a group of minor league owners shut out of MLB’s recent restructuring of its minor league affiliate system. While the baseball exemption has weathered dozens of similar challenges over the past century, the Nostalgia Partners plaintiffs claim that circumstances on the Supreme Court have changed enough that the justices would be willing to overturn or narrow the exemption in their favor. This claim rests with the Court’s …

The Effect Of Vmat2 Inhibitors On Tardive Dyskinesia Symptoms In Patients With Schizophrenia, Ada Kelly May 2022

The Effect Of Vmat2 Inhibitors On Tardive Dyskinesia Symptoms In Patients With Schizophrenia, Ada Kelly

Doctoral Projects

Prior to the FDA approval of VMAT2 inhibitors for the treatment of tardive dyskinesia (TD), few concrete treatment options were available for TD. The most common management strategy would include switching a patient from an FGA to an SGA while discontinuing any anticholinergic medications the patient was currently taking. Other options included changing, decreasing, or discontinuing the antipsychotic. Augmenting stable antipsychotic regimens, however, may not be feasible in the management of schizophrenia as antipsychotics are foundational in the treatment of schizophrenia. A retrospective chart review was performed on 70 records that were chosen through a convenience sample of patients being …

Fantasized Masculinity Performed In American War Narratives, Shea O'Scannlain May 2022

Fantasized Masculinity Performed In American War Narratives, Shea O'Scannlain

English Honors Theses

In this thesis I wanted to explore the ways that masculinity has been written in history through the genre of fiction. The first chapter discusses traumatized white masculinity in Kurt Vonnegut's novel SlaughterHouse Five and Oliver Stone's film Born On The Fourth of July. The second chapter deals with the female Black experience in response to the white patriarchy in Toni Morrison's novel Home and HBO's television series LoveCraft Country. And finally chapter 3 deals with mythologized masculinity redeemed through violence in Martin Scorsese's film Taxi Driver and Frank Miller's comic book series The Dark Knight Returns. …

Addressing Systemic Inequities: A Psychoeducational Group For Advocating For African Americans, Jaree' Barnwell May 2022

Addressing Systemic Inequities: A Psychoeducational Group For Advocating For African Americans, Jaree' Barnwell

Educational Specialist, 2020-current

This paper will discuss and describe the development of an open psychoeducational group that will empower people of the community through education to advocate for African American/Black people within institutions that may perpetuate barriers. Acknowledging that one in four people struggle with mental health issues, it is imperative to consider an appropriate treatment modality that destigmatizes mental health and equips participants with information. This group is especially relevant as one in three African Americans, who struggle with mental health concerns, will never receive the appropriate care comparatively afforded to white populations. This thesis will concisely discuss the education system, the …

Beyond Broaching: Existential Meaning Making Of Blackness Within Therapeutic Work, Monica M. Cooper May 2022

Beyond Broaching: Existential Meaning Making Of Blackness Within Therapeutic Work, Monica M. Cooper

Educational Specialist, 2020-current

This integrated literature review explores the mental health field’s contribution towards the subjugation of Black people through the means of researching human existence that affirmed white supremacy and bolstered the dehumanization of Blackness. This paper also explores how this negligent behavior on the part of the mental health field trivialized the deep pain and suffering experienced by Black people and provided the means to further dehumanize Blackness. The author provides frameworks to better understand the existential trauma experienced by the Black collective due to racism being embedded in societal narratives and history with the help of the mental health field. …

Informed Consent In Counseling Processes With The Transgender Community, Sindhura Elagandhala May 2022

Informed Consent In Counseling Processes With The Transgender Community, Sindhura Elagandhala

Educational Specialist, 2020-current

Cultural competence from mental healthcare professionals is vital to effectively serving the transgender population. Unfortunately, specifics for working with this community often remain unaddressed in most counselor education programs. Working with gender diverse individuals requires a nuanced understanding and application of contemporary theories surrounding gender, sex, intersectional theories, and potential medical consultation. Counselors may be asked to play unique roles for transgender clients that require knowledge of basic concepts and definitions regarding transgender identity and the ways in which these topics become relevant in the clinical, counseling environment. It is also necessary to question roles that mental health counselors may …
