Objectified And Dehumanized: Does Objectification Impact Perceptions Of Women Political Candidates?, Claire M. Gothreau, Amanda Milena Alvarez, Amanda Friesen
Political Science Publications
Objectification and dehumanization are topics often discussed within the social psychology and feminist theory literature. Research on objectification has largely focused on the sexual objectification of women’s bodies, whereas the dehumanization literature has focused on dehumanization in the context of racial and ethnic groups. Extant political science research has only recently begun to engage with these concepts. In this manuscript, we build upon these literatures and apply these insights to questions relevant to politics. In particular, we argue that objectifying and dehumanizing portrayals of women impact how voters evaluate women politicians and how much they support gender parity in politics. …
How The Power Of Film Inspires Christianity, Stephanie Mullins Sellers
How The Power Of Film Inspires Christianity, Stephanie Mullins Sellers
Masters Theses
Ruthie’s Game is a screenplay designed to repeat supernatural episodic events, which, according to research, may act as foundations for faith systems because watching films is a prayerful act, and the more it is repeated the longer the brain stores the memory. The thesis explores how Christian messages are received through film with a brief on the science behind the brain’s activities and how it reflexes film’s episodic events for later use. Testimonies, interviews, and personal comments show an audience seeking secular films with intellectual storyline and with no preaching to the choir. Ruthie’s Game shares Christian messages in an …

From Bridgerton To Love Is Blind: Romantic Relationship Expectations Based On Consumption Of Original Streaming Television, Elena Bartolomey
Honors Program Theses and Projects
This study examines how relationship expectations differ when a user consumes traditional television in comparison to original streaming TV. The findings of this study are consistent with previous studies that found that those with lower perceptions of trust and commitment in relationships tend to watch more romantic television. In addition, those who watch more original streaming television of all kinds, tend to have a more romanticized view of relationships. In addition to replicating previous studies, this study found that while young people may be reticent to define their relationships, those who do have higher levels of trust and commitment than …

Tag Your Friends For A Chance To Read This Paper: Self-Monitoring And Renumeration Posts On Social Media, Andrea Weng
Honors Program Theses and Projects
Brands frequently offer consumers the opportunity to win prizes or be entered into a sweepstakes by asking for likes, shares, tags and even content creation. However, many consumers are not interested in interacting with their social media audience for the sole purpose of remuneration. This study explores the willingness of Gen Z to participate in remuneration posts and the likelihood of liking, sharing, tagging and more. Findings reveal that most Gen Z consumers are willing to like a post in order to be entered to win something, but further engagement is less likely. When using more popular platforms like Instagram, …

Causal Comparative Study Of The Compassion Satisfaction Of School Counselors Working With Students Engaging In Self-Harm, Raymond Edward Storms
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
School counselors have several responsibilities above ensuring students are in their correct classes. One of those responsibilities is assisting in a school crisis. The purpose of this causal-comparative study was to examine the compassion satisfaction of school counselors when working with students engaging in acts of self-harm. To identify the school counselors’ compassion satisfaction, the study researched the following two questions. RQ1: Is there a difference between the compassion satisfaction scores of high-experience counselors and low-experience counselors working with students engaging in self-harm? RQ2: Is there a difference between the compassion satisfaction scores of elementary-middle school counselors and high school …

Leadership Qualities Needed For A School-Based Police Chief, Tridung Tran
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Although it has evolved over the years, school-based law enforcement remains vital in a school setting for safety and security. The dynamic of school-based law enforcement has been heavily researched through the popular crime prevention program called School Resource Officer. The introduction of police officers in schools’ thrusts law enforcement’s reputation, abilities, and authority into the spotlight. Limited studies have shown the unique leadership qualities needed to lead a school-based law enforcement agency. Police chief qualification is dependent on the law enforcement agency’s requirements and expectations and often requires years of experience and education. Further, there are excellent police chief …

Effects Of Strategic Communications Of Middle-Level Managers On Strategic Thinking And Organizational Performance: A Quantitative Study, Anthony Uwem Wilson
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This study explored the relationship between Middle-Level Managers' (MLM) strategic communications, strategic thinking, and organizational performance. Pieces of evidence about strategic communications processes and strategic thinking supporting increased organizational performance are critical to an organization. According to researchers, when strategic communications and strategic thinking are not in the manager’s thought processes, any plans based upon such methods might fail to achieve the desired outcomes concerning organizational performance. While strategic communications and strategic thinking are essential to corporate performance, researchers have not fully substantiated their impact on the performance outcomes of an organization. Identifying to the highest Degree how a relationship …

Leadership Strategies And Behaviors That Support Career Advancement For Teleworkers, Glory Ann Sanders
Leadership Strategies And Behaviors That Support Career Advancement For Teleworkers, Glory Ann Sanders
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Research in telework has primarily focused on the study of teleworkers or on the comparison between teleworkers and non-teleworkers. For this reason, leader behaviors in the telework context has been a relatively neglected area of study. This study emphasizes the lack of career advancement within the telework arena that has contributed to higher turnover intentions and a reluctancy to participate in telework programs. This research specifically explores leader behaviors and strategies that support career advancement for teleworkers within Denver, Colorado. The findings indicate that leaders are more intentional about communication with teleworkers than with non-teleworkers. Physical distance creates many challenges …

Facing The Matter: An Eye-Tracking Assessment Of Social Media Beauty Filter's Impact On Cosmetic Surgery Normative Beliefs, Camilla Marie Owens
Theses and Dissertations
Communication research has begun to assess the unique relationship between social comparison, social media, and body image (Lewallen & Behm-Morawitz, 2016), yet little research has been done to assess the unique connection between body dissatisfaction, social media filters, and cosmetic surgery (Beos et al., 2021). Studies have found that viewing edited body images on Instagram positively correlates with decreased body satisfaction and behaviors of body objectification (Tiggemann, & Barbato, 2018). This study used a series of scales to measure individuals' media exposure (MTUAS: Rosen et al., 2013) body area satisfaction (BASS; Brown et al., 1990), facial region satisfaction (FRSS; Guthrie …

Hybrid Incompatibility Between Ldrosophila Virilis And D. Lummei Is Stronger In The Presence Of Transposable Elements, Dean M. Castillo, Leonie C. Moyle
Nebraska Cooperative Extension: Faculty and Staff Publications
Mismatches between parental genomes in selfish elements are frequently hypothesized to underlie hybrid dysfunction and drive speciation. However, because the genetic basis of most hybrid incompatibilities is unknown, testing the contribution of selfish elements to reproductive isolation is difficult. Here, we evaluated the role of transposable elements (TEs) in hybrid incompatibilities between Drosophila virilis and D. lummei by experimentally comparing hybrid incompatibility in a cross where active TEs are present in D. virilis (TE+) and absent in D. lummei, to a cross where these TEs are absent from both D. virilis (TE−) and D. lummei genotypes. Using genomic data, …

Genetics Of Hippocampal Subregions Across Development, Jacob Pine
Genetics Of Hippocampal Subregions Across Development, Jacob Pine
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Behavioral genetic analyses have not demonstrated robust, unique, genetic correlates of hippocampal subregion volume. The following study is the first population-based investigation of a) hippocampal longitudinal axis genetic factors b) hippocampal transverse axis genetic factors using both T1 and T2 MRI images and c) differences in the genetic components of hippocampal volume between post-adolescent adults and pre-adolescent children. Twin-based biometric analyses demonstrated that longitudinal axis subregions are associated with significant, unique, genetic variance, and that longitudinal axis subregions that are closer to one another are more genetically related than those further to one another. Although our analyses find that certain …
A Personalized Intervention To Increase Regulatory Capacity For Anti-Racist Action, Jennifer Frances Beatty
A Personalized Intervention To Increase Regulatory Capacity For Anti-Racist Action, Jennifer Frances Beatty
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Many White Americans are motivated to be anti-racist but fall short. Often, they become defensive when confronted with their involvement in perpetuating racism. To address this, we designed an experiment to test a personalized, social modeling intervention that targets obstacles to responding constructively to being confronted about racism. In our multi-faceted intervention, participants learned from videos of role models who effectively managed a confrontation after doing something racist. After each video, participants wrote personalized reflections applying what they learned. In a registered sample of 391 White Americans, the intervention increased the personal acknowledgment of racial bias, changed relevant bias-related beliefs …
Archaic Sites, Ecological Zones, And Wetlands Resources In The Eastern Great Basin, Lindsey R. Lyle
Archaic Sites, Ecological Zones, And Wetlands Resources In The Eastern Great Basin, Lindsey R. Lyle
Theses and Dissertations
Archaeological data has increased significantly with Cultural Resource Management agencies finding and recording archaeological sites all across Utah. With the site data from the Utah State Historical Preservation Office, I examine the expansion of Archaic sites in the Eastern Great Basin from the Early Archaic through the Late Archaic, through the lens of elevation and ecological zones and proximity to wetland resources. I argue that the aridness of the Middle Holocene caused the people to expand into the mountains of Utah, and that the expansion continued into the Late Archaic period, even though the environment became more moist again. I …
Effectiveness Of Group Interventions For Weight Loss For Youth: A Meta-Analytic Review, Monica Carolina Martinez
Effectiveness Of Group Interventions For Weight Loss For Youth: A Meta-Analytic Review, Monica Carolina Martinez
Theses and Dissertations
Introduction: Nearly 19.3% of children in the United States have obesity. There are several behavioral weight loss (BWL) programs available for children and adolescents that have proven effective in managing weight. Many of these treatments are delivered to groups of children rather than to individual youth. However, previous reviews of the literature have not explored the unique effects of group treatment modalities. Research has shown that social ties, particularly with peers, have an impact on adolescents' physical activity engagement and dietary habits. Therefore, it is important to explore how the interaction component of group delivered BWL treatments contributes to their …

Mentoring Technique: A Reflective Warnings On Dysfunctional Mentoring On Developing Leaders In Library And Information Science Profession, Samson Akinola
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The review of literature shows that one of the finest methods to groom the latent leadership quality in new librarians and other information science professionals is by mentoring. Mentors take significant share in the development and moulding of new entrants into any profession as tutors and role models. However good, the use of mentoring looks in the leadership development of new librarians and other information professionals, there exist combinations of putative crucial aspects in mentoring, which have adverse consequence on the neophyte. These antithetical aspects include mentors diminution of the mentees, usurping the duties of mentees, personality brawl, illicit relationship, …

Ace Survey Among Individuals With A History Of National Guard Service, Daniel Lee Burns
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The study is based on previous studies regarding Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) among veterans and military service members, with an emphasis on mental health outcomes in the National Guard community. Military service can induce levels of stress that can require a high level of resilience and strong coping skills. As American service members deploy for prolonged periods on a recurrent basis, their ability to cope with the stress of deployment may be more difficult. Long term deployments, combat exposure, and stressful working conditions can have lasting effects on both the body and mind. The impacts of these factors are magnified …

Understanding and mapping the emergence and boundaries of cultural areas is a challenge for social sciences. In this paper, we present a method for analyzing the cultural composition of regions via Twitter hashtags. Cultures can be described as distinct combination of traits which we capture via principal component analysis (PCA). We investigate the top 8 PCA components of an area including France, Spain, and Portugal, in terms of the geographic distribution of their hashtag composition. We also discuss relationships between components and the insights those relationships can provide into the structure of a cultural space. Finally, we compare the spatial …

Agenda Setting On The Supreme Court Of The United States In 1960, 1977, And 1992, Jessica L. Curtis
Dissertations
This dissertation adds to Supreme Court of the United States agenda-setting research by exploring the following overarching research question: How does the Supreme Court of the United States decide which cases it will review? In addition, this study addresses three gaps in the agenda-setting research by considering types of petitions for writ of certiorari that are often ignored by other studies, analyzing the Court’s case-selection process as a two-step process, and studying the Court’s agenda-setting trends over time. To explore these gaps in the research, an original dataset was created by collecting data on a random sample of petitions for …

The Future Of The Joint Warfighting Headquarters: An Alternative Approach To The Joint Task Force, Eric Bissonette, Thomas Bruscino, Kelvin Mote, Matthew Powell, Marc Sanborn, James Watts, Louis G. Yuengert
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
The US military must create standing, numbered, and regionally aligned Joint warfighting headquarters— American Expeditionary Forces (AEFs)—around a command council and a staff organized into Joint centers and cells. Calls for standing Joint force headquarters are not new, but the demonstrated military effectiveness of the Joint Task Force (JTF) model coupled with increasing service-specific resource requirements and tightening fiscal constraints have resulted in little evolution in joint force headquarters construction since the end of World War II.
Analysis of the historical record has shown that joint warfighting is best conducted with a Joint warfighting command subordinate to the geographic combatant …
