Forensic Anthropology Casework At The Cook County Illinois Medical Examiner's Office, Chicago, Il, 2012–2022, Erin B. Waxenbaum, Anne L. Grauer

Anthropology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Forensic anthropology has grown in recent years with increased methodological standardization, technical advancements, and increasing numbers of academic institutions offering coursework and programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels. However, few practicing forensic anthropologists publish the composition of their casework, resulting in limited understanding of the true mechanics of the field by academics and forensic professionals. This study reports on forensic anthropology casework at the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office between March 2012 and February 2022. A total of 132 cases were evaluated. Results indicate that peak months of discovery were June (n = 19) and September (n = 17), …

Can Statins Lessen The Burden Of Virus Mediated Cancers?, Eva H Clark, Sarah T Ahmed, Elaine Chang, Elizabeth Y Chiao, Donna L White

Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy Staff Publications

Background: Oncogenic viruses, including hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), human papillomavirus (HPV), Epstein Barr virus (EBV), and Kaposi Sarcoma Herpes virus (KSHV) contribute to a significant proportion of the world's cancers. Given the sizeable burden of virus mediated cancers, development of strategies to prevent and/or treat these cancers is critical. While large population studies suggest that treatment with hydroxymethylglutaryl-CoA reductase inhibitors, commonly known as statins, may reduce the risk of many cancer types including HBV/HCV related hepatocellular carcinoma, few studies have specifically evaluated the impact of statin use in populations at risk for other types of virus …

Storytelling And Leadership In The Deaf Community, Luane Davis Haggerty Sep 2022

Storytelling And Leadership In The Deaf Community, Luane Davis Haggerty

JADARA

This article addresses a gap in scholarship on leadership styles in the Deaf community. There is an invisible style of leadership differing from the mainstream culture that has not been previously addressed in the literature at any depth. This article was intended to begin a discussion addressing this gap. My analysis of literature in the leadership fields, Deaf Studies and Performance Studies indicates a unique style of leadership by Deaf people within a Deaf community that is collaborative in nature yet values the individual. Further studies into Deaf leadership are warranted and may help to uncover this "collective individualist" approach …

A History Of The Rehabilitation Services Administration (Rsa) Support Of Interpreter Education, Linda K. Stauffer

JADARA

In 1978, Congress passed the Rehabilitation, Comprehensive Services, and Developmental Disabilities Amendments (RL. 95-602). These amendments to the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 authorized federal grants to states to fund interpreter training programs. Based on that legislation, in1980, the Rehabilitation Services Administration (RSA) began funding regional and national interpreter training projects and has done so continuously to the present. The history of the inclusion of interpreter training language in the 1978 Amendments can be traced to influential leaders in the field of rehabilitation of persons who are deaf or hard of hearing. Their collaboration, relationship with supportive Congressional legislators and staff, …

Intermarket Analysis: Oil, Gold, Us Dollar And Stock Market, Khalife Danielle, Elia Richard, El Chaarani Hani, Bou Nader Elsa

Arab Economic and Business Journal

The interdependence among the prices of oil, gold, the US dollar and stock market prices is of fundamental importance for any investment decision. This paper studies the bilateral relationships between these asset classes in order to identify direct and indirect relationships, positive and negative interactions by using regression analysis, and then tries to demonstrate if a simultaneous relationship exists between the four asset classes via the empirical methodology: the simultaneous equation approach. The international data used to do a regression analysis to identify the bilateral relationships between assets is from November, 2011 to October, 2021 on a monthly basis. The …

Researcher And Academic Library Roles And User Beliefs In The Pandemic: Designing The Open-Access And Library Usage Scale (Oalu), Elizabeth Dezouche, Angelique Blackburn

Killam Library Faculty Publications

We investigated whether individuals believe they have a right to information during a crisis, and whether attitudes about crisis-related information sharing differ by age and one’s role in providing or consuming information. We measured attitudes about aspects of data sharing related to COVID-19: researchers’ obligation to share data, publishers’ obligation to share information, and libraries’ responsibility to provide them. We predicted younger individuals, especially students as consumers of information, would report stronger preference for open access to pandemic-related information. A principal components analysis was performed, and two predicted factors emerged: information-sharing obligations and libraries’ responsibility to provide resources. Age was …

A Practicum In Behavioral Economics, Arthur J. Caplan Sep 2022

A Practicum In Behavioral Economics, Arthur J. Caplan

Applied Economics Faculty Publications

A Practicum in Behavioral Economics is a practice-based textbook covering the broad field of behavioral economics. Because behavioral economics is foremost a "test-and-learn" field of scientific inquiry that evolves according to experimental outcomes, so too should students test-and-learn. As such, the book's primary goal is to help students experience behavioral economics through participation in the same experiments and games that serve as the foundations for, and shape the contours of, the field. With the help of this book students learn behavioral economics firsthand, and in the process create their own experiences. They learn about themselves - about how they make …

Information Aggregation With Heterogeneous Traders, Cary Deck, Tae In Jun, Laura Razzolini, Tavoy Reid Sep 2022

Information Aggregation With Heterogeneous Traders, Cary Deck, Tae In Jun, Laura Razzolini, Tavoy Reid

ESI Working Papers

The efficient market hypothesis predicts that asset prices reflect all available information. A seminal experiment reported that contingent claim markets could yield market outcomes consistent with information aggregation when traders hold heterogeneous state-contingent values. However, a recent experiment found the rational expectation model outperformed the prior information and maxi-min models in contingent claim markets when traders hold homogeneous values despite the no trade equilibrium in that setting. But that same study failed to replicate the original result calling into question when, if ever, prices reliably reflect the aggregate information of traders with heterogeneous values. In this paper, we show contingent …

Auditory Stream Segregation Of Amplitude-Modulated Narrowband Noise In Cochlear Implant Users And Individuals With Normal Hearing, Alexandria F. Matz, Yingjiu Nie, Harley J. Wheeler Sep 2022

Auditory Stream Segregation Of Amplitude-Modulated Narrowband Noise In Cochlear Implant Users And Individuals With Normal Hearing, Alexandria F. Matz, Yingjiu Nie, Harley J. Wheeler

Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders - Faculty Scholarship

Voluntary stream segregation was investigated in cochlear implant (CI) users and normal-hearing (NH) listeners using a segregation-promoting objective approach which evaluated the role of spectral and amplitude-modulation (AM) rate separations on stream segregation and its build-up. Sequences of 9 or 3 pairs of A and B narrowband noise (NBN) bursts were presented which differed in either center frequency of the noise band, the AM-rate, or both. In some sequences (delayed sequences), the last B burst was delayed by 35 ms from their otherwise-steady temporal position. In the other sequences (no-delay sequences), the last B bursts were temporally advanced from 0 …

Children and adolescents diagnosed with cancer can now expect an average 85% 5-year overall survival, with significant improvements in longer-term morbidity and mortality reported over the past several decades. However, the long-term impact of therapeutic agents and modalities introduced in recent years remains unclear and will require dedicated follow-up in the years ahead. The Children's Oncology Group (COG), a part of the NCI's National Clinical Trials Network, with over 200 sites across North America and beyond, enrolls more than 10,000 patients onto research protocols annually, inclusive of first-line clinical trials and nontherapeutic studies. COG provides a platform to conduct survivorship …

BACKGROUND: Incidence rates of gastric cancer are increasing in young adults (age <50 >years), particularly among Hispanic persons. We estimated incidence rates of early-onset gastric cancer (EOGC) among Hispanic and non-Hispanic White persons by census tract poverty level and county-level metro/nonmetro residence.

METHODS: We used population-based data from the California and Texas Cancer Registries from 1995 to 2016 to estimate age-adjusted incidence rates of EOGC among Hispanic and non-Hispanic White persons by year, sex, tumor stage, census tract poverty level, metro versus nonmetro county, and state. We used logistic regression models to identify factors associated with distant stage diagnosis.

RESULTS: Of …

Toward Deeper Understanding And Wide-Scale Implementation Of Naturalistic Developmental Behavioral Interventions, Sophia D'Agostino, Ana D. Dueñas, Alice Bravo, Kelsie Tyson, Diondra Straiton, Giovanna L. Salvatore, Cressida Pacia, Melanie Pellecchia

Special Education and Rehabilitation Counseling Faculty Publications

Naturalistic Developmental Behavior Interventions (NDBIs) have a strong and growing evidence base. Yet, NDBIs are not implemented on a wide scale within early intervention programs for children on the autism spectrum. Potential reasons for the slow adoption of NDBIs likely stem from the differing theoretical orientations of behavioral and developmental sciences from which NDBI are derived, and a lack of training, knowledge, and support for implementing NDBIs within the behavior analytic community. In support of efforts to promote wide-scale implementation of NDBIs, we clarify their common features, discuss possible misconceptions, offer reasons why NDBIs should be widely implemented, and provide …

Disaster And Devolution, Ishrat Husain Dr. Sep 2022

Disaster And Devolution, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Newspaper and Magazine Articles

The recent devastating floods which have displaced or affected 30 million people, destroyed or damaged a million houses, buildings, structures, bridges, roads, rail connections, highways, commercial properties, disrupted movement of goods have brought unbearable grief to the whole nation. The losses to the economy are still being assessed but a rough and approximate estimate indicates that it may be around $10 billion. On top of the already fragile fiscal situation, this quantum of loss is unbearable unless once again the international community rises to the occasion on humanitarian grounds. It is also now well established that extreme weather events such …

Knowledge Sharing Practices And Behaviors In University Libraries: A Survey, Emmanuel Chidiadi Onwubiko

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

In the world we are today knowledge which is acquired through information has become one of the essential commodity for the survival of any organization including institutions like university libraries. As has been revealed in recent knowledge management (KM)-related researches, effective knowledge sharing (KS) is a significant component of KM success. The importance of knowledge sharing in knowledge management can be interpreted as a blood circulating in the body. This study therefore took a look at knowledge sharing practices and behaviors in university libraries using selected federal universities in Nigeria as case in point. The study applied a descriptive survey …

A Framework For Sexism Detection On Social Media Via Byt5 And Tabnet, Arjumand Younus, Muhammad Atif Qureshi

Articles

Hateful and offensive content on social media platforms particularly content directed towards a specific gender is a great impediment towards equality, diversity and inclusion. Social media platforms are facing increasing pressure to work towards regulation of such content; and this has directed researchers in text mining to work towards hate speech identification algorithms. One such attempt is sexism detection for which mostly transformer-based text methods have been proposed. We propose a combination of byte-level model ByT5 with tabular modeling via TabNet that has at its core an ability to take into account platform and language aspects of the challenging task …

The global personal development market was valued at $38.28 billion in 2019 and is expected to grow an additional 5% from 2020 to 2027. Many of these workshops promise to be transformational. This secondary analysis study examined transformative, transpersonal, and noetic aspects of personal development workshops. We found that 74% of post-survey records endorsed that participants experienced a moment of clarity or profound insight during their workshop. In addition, 66% endorsed that participants had experienced at least one noetic experience, and 84% endorsed at least one transpersonal experience. These analyses provide preliminary evidence for the transformational potential of personal development …

Objective: Law enforcement officers (LEOs) are exposed to high levels of occupational trauma and face added stress from heightened public scrutiny and COVID-19, which may result in suicide. It is crucial to understand differences between LEOs who seek treatment and those who do not. Method: We compared LEOs from the same greater metropolitan area who sought treatment with those who did not. Participants completed validated measures assessing posttraumatic stress disorder, generalized anxiety, depression, and suicidality. Results: The treatment-seeking sample scores were higher on all standardized assessments. Bivariate logistic regression results indicated that the non–treatment-seeking sample's odds of experiencing suicidality were …

Team Incentives And Lower Ability Workers: An Experimental Study On Real Effort Tasks, Richard B. Freeman, Xiaofei Pan, Xiaolan Yang, Maoliang Ye

Economics Faculty Working Papers

Team incentives are important in many compensation systems that pay workers according to the output of their team as well as to their own output, with team bonuses often depending on whether the team meets or exceeds specified thresholds. Yet little is known about how team members with different abilities respond to compensation rules and thresholds. We contrast the performance of lower ability participants and higher ability participants in an experiment with three distribution schemes – equal sharing, piece rate sharing, and tournament style winner-takesall – in settings with and without a team threshold. Workers randomly assigned to equal sharing …
