The Distinctive Pathologies Of Free Speech Jurisprudence At The U.S. Supreme Court And European Court Of Human Rights, Thomas Keck Sep 2022

The Distinctive Pathologies Of Free Speech Jurisprudence At The U.S. Supreme Court And European Court Of Human Rights, Thomas Keck

Political Science - All Scholarship

This paper explores the distinctive pathologies of free expression jurisprudence at the U.S. Supreme Court and European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR). On the U.S. side, modern First Amendment law has effectively guarded against state censorship, particularly content-based censorship, and has cleared space for a diverse array of private speech platforms to operate in the marketplace of ideas. But First Amendment law’s single-minded focus on state suppression leads it to over-police certain state actions whose threats to free expression values seem minimal and to under-police certain private actions whose threats to free expression values seem substantial. On the European side, …

Advanced Methods For Railroad Station Operation Decisions: Data Analytics, Optimization, Automation, Yuan Wang

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The continued and substantial growth in railroad transportation in many countries inspires railroad operators to leverage advanced methods into better railroad operation decisions. Among all facilities, significant returns on investment can always be achieved by optimizing the operations of network nodes - junctions and stations, because stations usually form the capacity bottlenecks in the system.

There are thousands of decision-making problems in relation to the station operations and can be classified into different levels to achieve different goals. From top to bottom, high-level business strategies aim to make decisions to achieve long-term strategical benefits, such as optimizing local station functionalities …

Modeling Multivariate Age-Related Imaging Variables With Dependencies, Hwiyoung Lee, Chixiang Chen, Peter Kochunov, Liyi Elliot Hong, Shuo Chen

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Neuroimaging techniques have been increasingly used to understand the neural biology of aging brains. The neuroimaging variables from distinct brain locations and modalities can exhibit age-related patterns that reflect localized neural decline. However, it is a challenge to identify the impacts of risk factors (eg, mental disorders) on multivariate imaging variables while simultaneously accounting for the dependence structure and nonlinear age trajectories using existing tools. We propose a mixed-effects model to address this challenge by building random effects based on the latent brain aging status. We develop computationally efficient algorithms to estimate the parameters of new random effects. The simulations …

Journal of Indonesian Health Policy and Administration

The emergence of COVID-19 pandemic has made it difficult for people to access health services. According to JKN statistics, FKTP visits was decreased from 337.69 million (2019) to 193.03 (2021). Teleconsultation, a type of telemedicine, could be the right solution so that people can still access the health services they need and protect themselves from the spread of COVID-19. There was an increase in the use of several teleconsultation applications in Indonesia during pandemic, from 4 million to more than 15 million people. However, this rate is only 7.63% of the internet users and 5.6% of the total population of …

Memory And Attention While Scuba Diving At Shallow And Deep Depths: An Open Water Study, Leanne Boucher, Joshua Feingold, Kelly Concannon, Stephanie Talavera, Jaime Tartar, W. Matthew Collins

Journal for Sports Neuroscience

SCUBA diving requires a high level of cognitive functioning, however, many divers anecdotally report poor memory and attentional skills while underwater. Few studies have documented cognitive deficits resulting from an open-water dive. Here, 23 divers completed both shallow (8 m) and deep (28 m) dives over two days in the open-water. The order of the dives was counterbalanced across participants. While at depth, they completed the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory to assess anxiety levels, learned and were tested on a list of 36 words, and completed the trail making task (TMT) to assess executive functioning. They also gave saliva samples to …

Long Term Outcomes After Norse: Treatment With Vagus Nerve Stimulation, Poul H. Espino, Jorge G. Burneo, Gaby Moscol, Teneille Gofton, Keith Macdougall, Ana Suller-Marti

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

New-onset refractory status epilepticus (NORSE) is associated with high mortality, therapy resistant epilepsy (TRE) and poor cognitive and functional outcomes. Some patients develop multifocal TRE, for whom surgery with a curative intention, is not an option. In these patients, Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS) is performed as a palliative treatment. We report the long-term outcomes regarding seizure frequency, functional and cognitive outcome, and effectiveness of VNS in two patients with TRE as a consequence of NORSE. In the first patient with cryptogenic NORSE, VNS implantation occurred during the acute stage, probably contributing to the cessation of her status epilepticus. However, in …

A Closer Look Into Treatment Integrity: Examining The Effects Of Student Intervention Adherence On Intervention Outcomes, Alec Ryan Goldstein Sep 2022

A Closer Look Into Treatment Integrity: Examining The Effects Of Student Intervention Adherence On Intervention Outcomes, Alec Ryan Goldstein

Theses - ALL

It is widely accepted that treatment integrity is an important component in evaluating the validity of an intervention (Collier-Meek et al., 2013), and empirical research has demonstrated a positive relationship between high treatment integrity and intervention outcomes (Hengeller et al., 1997; Huey et al., 2000; Noell et al., 2002; Scott et al., 2019; Wilder et al., 2006). Participant adherence, a foundational dimension of treatment integrity (Sanetti et al., 2021), should also be examined in order to make valid conclusions regarding intervention effectiveness. The current study sought to descriptively explore students’ adherence to a performance feedback, goal setting, and self-graphing intervention …

The War-Zone Mentality — Mental Health Effects Of Gun Violence In U.S. Children And Adolescents, James Garbarino Sep 2022

The War-Zone Mentality — Mental Health Effects Of Gun Violence In U.S. Children And Adolescents, James Garbarino

Psychology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Does gun violence affect the mental health of U.S. children? That question has the same answer as most inquiries about child and adolescent development: it depends. Rarely does a simple cause–effect relationship apply to the same degree to all children, and the same exposures may even have opposite effects on different children. Such variability is an essential truth of the “ecological perspective” on child and adolescent development. But from this perspective, consideration of gun violence’s effects on the mental health of young people highlights two issues among the many facing U.S. society: traumatic responses in children directly exposed to gun …

The Influence Of Personality And Trauma On The Outcomes Of Sex Offender Treatment In An Outpatient Setting, Nicholas R. Rogers Sep 2022

The Influence Of Personality And Trauma On The Outcomes Of Sex Offender Treatment In An Outpatient Setting, Nicholas R. Rogers

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Sex offenders in the United States invoke a negative reaction in a majority of people. Often, there is a stigma about the character and personality of an individual who would commit such acts. These perceptions have largely kept the development of treatment modalities limited when compared to other psychological problems. One area that continues to need research is in the factors that contribute to the outcomes of treatment for sex offenders. The present study investigated the relationships between perceived historical trauma, personality, and treatment completion in an outpatient group of sexual offenders. We hypothesized that (1) sexual offenders who completed …

The Effects Of Leader Support For Creativity And Leader Gender On Subordinate Creative Problem-Solving Performance, Nadine T. Maliakkal, Roni Reiter-Palmon Sep 2022

The Effects Of Leader Support For Creativity And Leader Gender On Subordinate Creative Problem-Solving Performance, Nadine T. Maliakkal, Roni Reiter-Palmon

Psychology Faculty Publications

Ample correlational research shows that leader support for creativity is related to subordinate creativity, yet research examining the causality of this relationship experimentally is scant. Furthermore, most studies that demonstrate support for this relationship have used relatively subjective creativity measures that do not tap as effectively into the creative problem-solving process. Thus, we experimentally examined whether leader support for creativity affects subordinate creative problem-solving performance. We also examined whether this relationship depends on leader gender. We used experimental vignette methodology and a sample of 247 working adults to test these relationships. We found that high (vs. low) leader support for …

Public Interest Or Policy Diffusion: Analyzing The Effects Of Massage Therapist Municipal Licensing, Darwyyn Deyo, Kofi Ampaabeng, Conor Norris, Edward Timmons

Economics Faculty Working Papers Series

Massage therapy is widely licensed by the states. However, municipalities also often passed massage therapist licensing, motivated by preventing prostitution. Using a novel dataset on municipal licensing and crime data from the FBI, we test if local massage therapist licensing reduced prostitution. We also test a policy diffusion hypothesis, in which cities pass responsive massage therapist licensing. We find that municipal massage therapist licensing does not lead to a reduction in prostitution, but we find support for the policy diffusion hypothesis, with municipalities up to 65% more likely to pass responsive licensing within three years of their neighbor doing so.

CPAR Presents: A Data and Research Series for Community Impact

Societal “progress” is often marked by the construction of new infrastructure that fuels change and innovation. Just as railroads and interstate highways were the defining infrastructure projects of the 1800 and 1900s, the development of data infrastructure is a critical innovation of our century. Railroads and highways were drivers of development and prosperity for some investors and sites. Yet other individuals and communities were harmed, displaced, bypassed, ignored, and forgotten by those efforts. As railroads and highways both developed and decimated communities, so too can data infrastructure. At this moment in our history, we can co-create data infrastructure to promote …

Work-Family Conflict, Sarah Stepanek, Megan Paul Sep 2022

Work-Family Conflict, Sarah Stepanek, Megan Paul

Umbrella Summaries

What is work-family conflict?

Work-family conflict is defined as “a form of interrole conflict in which the role pressures from the work and family domains are mutually incompatible in some respect” (Greenhaus & Beutell, 1985, p. 77). Work-family conflict is often contrasted with work-family enrichment, which represents the positive spillover that can occur between the work and family domains. The idea of work-family conflict is grounded in resource drain theory, which suggests that individuals have limited physical, psychological, and social resources to draw on while performing in different roles. When individuals devote large quantities of their resources to one domain …

Work-Family Enrichment, Sarah Stepanek, Megan Paul Sep 2022

Work-Family Enrichment, Sarah Stepanek, Megan Paul

Umbrella Summaries

What is work-family enrichment?

Work-family enrichment is used to describe the positive benefits derived from spillover between work and family. Specifically, work-family enrichment is formally defined as “the extent to which experiences in one role improve the quality of life in the other role” (Greenhaus & Powell, 2006, p. 73). This is often contrasted with the concept of work-family conflict, which represents the negative spillover between the work and family domains. Work-family enrichment is often distinguished by the direction of its effect; benefits from work that are applied to the family domain are termed work-to-family enrichment (WFE), and benefits from …
