The Effect Of Mood On Task Completion Time, Maia M. Busi
The Effect Of Mood On Task Completion Time, Maia M. Busi
Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal
Studies on mood and task completion tend to focus on task outcomes and task performance. It is typically found that positive mood states result in better test scores and better task outcomes (Martinez & Bartosek, 2015). This study examines the effect mood states have on task completion time through an anonymous online survey involving a mood manipulation and a timed visual search task. I hypothesized that that participants who were exposed to a positive stimulus will complete a visual search task quicker on average than participants who were exposed to a neutral stimulus. A total of 34 participants completed the …
Chinese Consumers’ Attitudes Toward Animal Welfare: Behaviors, Beliefs, And Responses To Messaging, Jo Anderson
Chinese Consumers’ Attitudes Toward Animal Welfare: Behaviors, Beliefs, And Responses To Messaging, Jo Anderson
General - Animal Protection
Despite being comparatively neglected until recently, the suffering of animals in Asia is starting to command more attention from global animal advocacy activists. In particular, as the largest country in the world by both human and farmed animal population, and among the largest when measured by economy and land mass, China plays a central role here. However, the key question of how best to improve outcomes for farmed animals in China remains difficult to answer, due to the recency of the movement and a comparative lack of research on the topic.
Although China’s per capita meat consumption is lower than …
Festivals And The Covid-19 Pandemic: Creative Responses, Threats And Opportunities, Bernadette Quinn Dr.
Festivals And The Covid-19 Pandemic: Creative Responses, Threats And Opportunities, Bernadette Quinn Dr.
Case Studies
The COVID 19 pandemic severely disrupted the workings of the festival and event sector in Ireland during 2020 and into 2021 as government regulations prohibited gatherings of people, and public health advice advocated social distancing. Many festivals and events were forced to cancel or postpone their plans, but others were able to devise a variety of creative responses to sustain their activities throughout the pandemic. This case study examines how festivals adapted by embracing digital technologies. It goes on to discuss the challenges faced by the sector in doing so, as well as the opportunities that were generated.

War And Money In Ngram Viewer, Robert H. Mcfadden, William Zywiak, Ronald P. Bobroff, Gao Niu
Finance Department Faculty Journal Articles
The second and fourth authors have been inviting Intro to Applied Analytics and Statistics 1 students to use the Ngram Database to explore historical topics of their choosing. This is the first article derived from this exercise. The first author examined the historical relationship between war and money from 1775 to 2005 in the American English corpus. This is followed by an examination of the 3-gram “cost of war” in the American English and British English corpora. Specific to the analyses presented here several military and economic events are discussed. More specifically, both economies and wars are somewhat unpredictable, with …

The Effect Of Social Axioms On The Relationship Between Needs And Well-Being, Cătălin Mosoia, Margareta Dincă
The Effect Of Social Axioms On The Relationship Between Needs And Well-Being, Cătălin Mosoia, Margareta Dincă
Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences
The paper investigates the effect of social axioms on the relationship between basic psychological needs and subjective well-being in two groups of adults residing in two different cultural contexts, Romania and the UK. Participants aged 18 to 60 completed an online survey between 22 May 2019 and 1 March 2021. A sample of 425 Romanian participants (M = 40.34, SD = 11.235) answered a questionnaire written in the Romanian language, and 137 English-speaking participants (M = 28.24, SD = 10.741) responded to the same questionnaire but written in the English language. In this study, we used the Basic …

Publishing Without Publishing: The Case For Utrgv Library Poster Displays, Shannon Pensa, Raquel Estrada, William Flores
University Library Publications and Presentations
During the pandemic, our library, like many others, made the switch to promote library resources for an online centric world. Book displays were reimagined in the form of LibGuides, online flyers and social media posts became more commonplace to reach our patrons. Yet throughout all this online marketing, we had overlooked our institutional repository (IR) to disseminate our creative works. That changed in 2021, when we decided to start uploading poster presentations created to promote library resources and realized that in effect, we became content creators. While the posters are not the traditional form of research and publication, we are …
Linguistic Competence And Bicultural Identity: Mutually (Re)Enforcing Or Compensatory Mechanisms For Acculturation?, Łukasz Kmiotek
Linguistic Competence And Bicultural Identity: Mutually (Re)Enforcing Or Compensatory Mechanisms For Acculturation?, Łukasz Kmiotek
Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences
The article describes a cross-cultural study comparing bicultural identity and bilingualism of first-generation Poles and high school students in the Rhône Alpes Region (France), high school students in Brussels (Belgium) as well as Polish university students of French language and culture in Poland. The study results portray the contrast between Polish students and three other groups acculturating abroad so that French identity appears stronger than Polish among the university students, and Polish identity stronger than French among the migrants. Secondly, acculturative context (home vs host country) is a moderator between Polish-French bilingualism and bicultural identity. Results are discussed in the …

Expatriate Adolescents’ Resilience: Risk And Protective Factors In The Third Culture Context, Jorunn Jo Holmberg, Lilly Augustine, Sahil Datta, Toshie Imada
Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences
Expatriate children and adolescents typically spend several of their formative years moving from country to country, frequently having to adapt to new cultures, making new friends, and fit into new school systems. It has been established in literature that such frequent changes may cause increased and prolonged risk of developing internalizing behavior problems such as depression and anxiety. However, little is still known regarding which protective factors serve as buffer towards the increased risk within the expatriate demographic. This study examined risk and protective factors among a group of expatriates, adolescents, and their parents, originating from 21 countries on five …

The Gifted Child In Adulthood: Opinions On Educational Experiences And Their Relation To The Current Self, Miranda Brannum
The Gifted Child In Adulthood: Opinions On Educational Experiences And Their Relation To The Current Self, Miranda Brannum
Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal
Giftedness is defined as excelling in a topic beyond the capability of other peers. Oftentimes gifted students are placed in gifted programs and/or assigned gifted Individualized Education Programs in order to provide acceleration and enrichment. My survey asks participants ages 18 years of age or older questions about how they feel gifted programs or gifted Individualized Education Programs may have influenced them, and if they have any comments or suggestions for improving these programs. I intended my study to be descriptive and exploratory to provide insight on any common themes and tendencies people in gifted programs may report. Descriptive and …
Interpretation Of Grammatical Gender Among English Monolingual Speakers, Diego De Gregorio
Interpretation Of Grammatical Gender Among English Monolingual Speakers, Diego De Gregorio
Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal
This research project aimed to discover how English monolingual speakers interpret the idea of grammatical gender, and if they have an innate bias toward associating common English nouns to the masculine gender. My hypothesis was that participants would assign a masculine grammatical gender to words at a greater than chance due to an existent internalized genderism/sexism within the participants. To gather data, a Qualtrics survey was designed to test participants. Said survey was limited to people who only speak English and contained 10 different common nouns. After the presentation of each noun, participants were given two options: masculine or feminine. …
The Links Between Young Children’S Use Of Pacifiers And Swaddling With Child Sleep Arousal, Kenzie Goldsmith, Melanie Dubois
The Links Between Young Children’S Use Of Pacifiers And Swaddling With Child Sleep Arousal, Kenzie Goldsmith, Melanie Dubois
Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal
Sleep arousal, or waking experiences during sleep, in young children was examined in relation to pacifier usage and the caregiver’s use of the swaddling technique. Primary caregivers of young children from 1 to 24 months old, fluent in English, and 18 years or older completed a Qualtrics survey detailing their child’s sleep routines. The survey questions considered the child’s use of self-soothing devices and the caregiver’s use of soothing techniques, namely pacifiers and swaddling. By utilizing the Brief Infant Sleep Questionnaire-Revised (BISQ-R; Sadeh et al., 2020), we examined the relationship between child sleep arousal and pacifier usage, along with sleep …

Toyota Motors South Africa (Pty) Ltd V Numsa Obo Njini And Others (D 692/19 [2022] Zalcd 12 (14 July 2022), Stephen Nkosi
SAIPAR Case Review
This was an application in terms of s 145 of the Labour Relations Act 66 of 1966. Toyota sought to have the decision of the CCMA, ordering the re-instatement of Mr Lungile Njini - then an employee of Toyota for 17 years – be set aside, and that his dismissal be declared fair. The case represents an interesting interplay between the quest for discipline and productivity in the workplace and the right to exercise one’s constitutional right to culture as provided for in s 30 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa Act. This note is divided into …

Adjustment Of Refugees In Greece As A Social Identity Process: A Longitudinal Study, Angelos Panagiotopoulos, Irene Giovanetti, Vassilis Pavlopoulos
Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences
Many refugees moving into Greece and other European countries often struggle to adjust to their new life. Over and above other factors, social isolation seems to be a major contributor in their poor adjustment outcomes, yet the underlying psychological mechanisms of their links are not well understood. Based on the Social Identity Model of Identity Change, we conceptualized refugees’ adjustment as a major life transition that depends on (i) the maintenance of existing pre-migratory group memberships (social identity continuity pathway), (ii) the development of new post-migratory social identities (social identity gain pathway), and (iii) the perceived compatibility between pre- and …

Pedestrian Wayfinding Under Consideration Of Visual Impairment, Blindness, And Deafblindness: A Mixed-Method Investigation Into Individual Experiences And Supporting Elements, Martin Swobodzinski, Amy T. Parker, Elizabeth Schaller, Denise Snow
TREC Final Reports
In this report we discuss to-date findings of a project that aimed at assessing individual and environmental affordances in the context of human pedestrian wayfinding of visually impaired, blind, and deafblind travelers in public spaces. Our project afforded collaboration, co-design, and co-creation of knowledge between the investigators, partners at the American Printing House of the Blind and GoodMaps, the Portland State University Digital City Testbed Center, and members of the disability community. The objective of the project was to better understand how different wayfinding aids, that is, wayfinding apps, tactile maps, and verbal route descriptions, are employed by visually impaired, …

Inspiring Asian American Awareness Through Archival Research: A Gonzaga Case Study, Shyam Sriram, Shayna Pekala, Stephanie Plowman
Foley Library Scholarship
The recent rise in anti-Asian violence in the United States necessitates urgent and immediate scholarly engagement and classroom interventions. The fact that Illinois and New Jersey are the only two states to make Asian Pacific American history a mandatory part of public school curricula—and only did so in 2022—should trouble anyone who believes in equitable representation and education.Drawing on the expertise of two librarians and one political science professor, we created an assignment in the spring 2022 semester—for the first “Asian American Politics” seminar ever offered at Gonzaga University—that combined physical and digital resources for a new kind of archival …

More Roads Or Public Transit? Insights From Measuring City-Center Accessibility, Lucas Conwell, Fabian Eckert, Ahmed Mushfiq Mobarak
More Roads Or Public Transit? Insights From Measuring City-Center Accessibility, Lucas Conwell, Fabian Eckert, Ahmed Mushfiq Mobarak
Discussion Papers
We propose a theory-inspired measure of the accessibility of a city’s center: the size of the surrounding area from which it can be reached within a specific time. Using publicly-available optimal routing software, we compute these ”accessibility zones” for the 109 largest American and European cities, separately for cars and public transit commutes. Compared to European cities, US cities are half as accessible via public transit and twice as accessible via cars. Car accessibility zones are always larger than public transit zones, making US cities more accessible overall. However, US cities’ car orientation comes at the cost of less green …
The Employment Effects Of Mobile Internet In Developing Countries, Gaurav Chiplunkar, Pinelopi K. Goldberg
The Employment Effects Of Mobile Internet In Developing Countries, Gaurav Chiplunkar, Pinelopi K. Goldberg
Discussion Papers
We examine the employment effects of 3G mobile internet expansion in developing countries. We find that 3G significantly increases the labor force participation rate of women and the employment rates of both men and women. Our results suggest that 3G affects the type of jobs and there is a distinct gender dimension to these effects. Men transition away from unpaid agricultural work into operating small agricultural enterprises, while women take more unpaid jobs, especially in agriculture, and operate more small businesses in all sectors. Both men and women are more likely to work in wage jobs in the service sector.

Knowledge Of The Temporal Structure Of Events In Relation To Autistic Traits And Social Ability, Kara E Hannah, Kevin S Brown, Mikayla Hall-Bruce, Ryan A Stevenson, Ken Mcrae
Psychology Publications
Event knowledge, a person's understanding of patterns of activities in the world, is crucial for everyday social interactions. Social communication differences are prominent in autism, which may be related to atypical event knowledge, such as atypical knowledge of the sequences of activities that comprise the temporal structure of events. Previous research has found that autistic individuals have atypical event knowledge, but research in this area is minimal, particularly regarding autistic individuals' knowledge of the temporal structure of events. Furthermore, no studies have investigated the link between event knowledge and autistic traits in a non-clinical sample. We investigated relationships between event …

Public libraries are trusted community hubs that foster connections with individuals of different socioeconomic statuses; ages; ethnic, linguistic, religious, and cultural backgrounds; and sexual and gender identities. Located in diverse settings, library branches offer resources and programs that meet the specific needs of their communities who are navigating the effects of our increasingly asocial society. Libraries have been shown to cater to individuals contending with higher levels of social isolation and loneliness, as well as increased rates of mental illnesses and antisocial behaviours. The shift to online environments during COVID-19 has exacerbated feelings of disconnection. During these times of change, …

Understanding how coupled adults arrange food-related labor in relation to their daily time allocation is of great importance because different arrangements may have implications for diet-related health and gender equity. Studies from the time-use perspective argue that daily activities such as work, caregiving, and non-food-related housework can potentially compete for time with foodwork. However, studies in this regard are mostly centered on individual-level analyses. They fail to consider cohabiting partners’ time spent on foodwork and non-food-related activities, a factor that could be helpful in explaining how coupled partners decide to allocate time to food activities. Using 108 daily time-use logs …

Representations Of Young People Aged 15-17 About Their Cultural Orientations And The Cultural Orientations Of Their Immediate Social Environment, Olga Alexandrovna Moskvitina
Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences
Psychological research into the influence of culture, intercultural interactions on different aspects of a person's life is still relevant. The presented research is devoted to identifying what values of what type of culture (traditional modern and dynamic according to J. Townsend) are shared by contemporary high school students aged 15-17 in Russia. Their own idea of values and how they represent the values of their immediate environment were studied. The measure of the coincidence of these ideas may indicate the state of cultural self-determination of high school students: they have their own values, different from the immediate environment, or, on …
