Breaking The Barriers: A Phenomenological Study Of Women’S Non-Governmental Organisations’ Adoption Of Social Media, Muhammad Kabir Abubakar, Patricia Neo Mooko

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Organizations now frequently use social media as a tool for communication and information sharing. Although many studies have examined the various context-specific barriers to technology adoption in organizations, few of them have a direct bearing on the particular barriers to social media adoption. Organizations can use social media for their activities with the help of understanding the adoption barriers. Investigating the most important impediments to social media adoption in women’s non-governmental organisations (WNGOs) in North-West Nigeria is the goal of this study. The study used a phenomenological approach-based qualitative research design. Semi-structured interviews were used to gather data from ten …

Perceived School Fairness And Willingness To Report Bias-Based Bullying Among Youth During Covid-19 Pandemic, Isak Kim, Deanna L. Burgess, Seriashia J. Chatters

Counseling Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND

As COVID-19 has let many students into remote learning environments and exacerbated inequality among marginalized individuals, there is a growing concern about Bias-Based Bullying (BBB) in online spaces among school-aged youths. Learning modality and perceived school fairness may affect youth's likelihood of reporting BBB.

METHODS

Data were collected as part of “No Place For Hate” (NPFH) project, which was conducted by an equity office of a school district. A sample of middle and high school students (N = 1117) in the school district was used as an analytic sample. We conducted a series of independent samples t tests and …

Cognitive Training Enhances Growth Mindset In Children Through Plasticity Of Cortico-Striatal Circuits, Lang Chen, Hyesang Chang, Jeremy Rudoler, Eydis Arnardottir, Yuan Zhang, Carlo De Los Angeles, Vinod Menon Nov 2022

Cognitive Training Enhances Growth Mindset In Children Through Plasticity Of Cortico-Striatal Circuits, Lang Chen, Hyesang Chang, Jeremy Rudoler, Eydis Arnardottir, Yuan Zhang, Carlo De Los Angeles, Vinod Menon

Psychology

Growth mindset, the belief that one’s abilities can improve through cognitive effort, is an important psychological construct with broad implications for enabling children to reach their highest potential. However, surprisingly little is known about malleability of growth mindset in response to cognitive interventions in children and its neurobiological underpinnings. Here we address critical gaps in our knowledge by investigating behavioral and brain changes in growth mindset associated with a four-week training program designed to enhance foundational, academically relevant, cognitive skills in 7–10-year-old children. Cognitive training significantly enhanced children’s growth mindset. Cross-lagged panel analysis of longitudinal pre- and post-training data revealed …

Heterotopias Of Nationalist Youth Organisations In Poland: Communitarisation And Entry/Exit System, Helena Ostrowicka, Klaudia Wolniewicz-Slomka Nov 2022

Heterotopias Of Nationalist Youth Organisations In Poland: Communitarisation And Entry/Exit System, Helena Ostrowicka, Klaudia Wolniewicz-Slomka

The Qualitative Report

The article presents the results of an analysis of the discourse of nationalist youth organisations in Poland. The authors have attempted to reconstruct the common “us” of two youth organisations based on the materials made available by them as well as articles in the press published in 2018 in selected journals and weeklies. This was the year when Poland celebrated its 100th anniversary of regaining independence, which made this an exceptional time in the context of discourse about the community. The article focuses on two youth organisations – the All-Polish Youth (APY) and the National Radical Camp (NRC). The …

Detectives And The Legal System: A Paradigm To Support Scholarly Inquiry And Mixed Methods Research In The Social Sciences, James A. Bernauer, Frank Hartle Nov 2022

Detectives And The Legal System: A Paradigm To Support Scholarly Inquiry And Mixed Methods Research In The Social Sciences, James A. Bernauer, Frank Hartle

The Qualitative Report

It is argued in this article that the legal system, from initial investigation by detectives to final resolution in court by lawyers, judges, and juries, offers a basis for investigating phenomena in the social sciences using mixed methods. We think that this new paradigm combines the components of both the qualitative and quantitative paradigms and provides a practical model for conceptualizing and conducting mixed methods research. The implication of this new paradigm is that it may help us better understand underlying phenomena in scholarly inquiry and thus offers a potential contribution for using a mixed-methods approach in both education and …

Examining The Role Of Experiential Avoidance And Valued Action In The Negative Effects Of Weight Self-Stigma, Marissa L. Donahue, Michael E. Levin, Kayloni Olson, Emily Panza, Jason Lillis

Psychology Faculty Publications

Harmful effects of weight self-stigma on quality of life and health behaviors have been well-established. However, the processes that lead to these negative outcomes are less understood. Psychological inflexibility is defined as a pattern of rigid psychological reactions dominating over values and meaningful actions. A lack in valued action is characterized by the absence of activities that are connected to what is personally meaningful. In this secondary analysis, we aim to extend research by examining two subprocesses of psychological inflexibility, experiential avoidance and lack of valued action, as statistical mediators of the relations between weight self-stigma and quality of life/health …

Cowboy Cooper Goes West: Mystery Babylon And The Western Hero Archetype, Matthew Bancroft-Smithe Nov 2022

Cowboy Cooper Goes West: Mystery Babylon And The Western Hero Archetype, Matthew Bancroft-Smithe

Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) at UNI

William Milton Cooper was a radio show host, author, and conspiracy theorist. Among other things, Cooper claimed insider knowledge of a plot, guided by an ancient Luciferian religious order, to consolidate nations into a socialist New World Order. Although currently unexamined in academia, Cooper’s conspiratorial influence can be found everywhere from the Oklahoma City Bombing to contemporary false flag accusations to QAnon mythology. While this influence includes shared content, Cooper’s approach to evidence, persona, and narrative framing demand attention in a world of increasingly visible conspiracy discourse. Through application of Hocker-Rushing’s western hero archetype, my research indicates that Cooper’s Mystery …

F15 Mapping For Cultural Resurgence: Repatriating Geographical Knowledge Of Kamchatka’S Indigenous Peoples Through Restorative Re-Mapping Of Materials From Early Scientific Expeditions, Semyon Drozdetckii

Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) at UNI

The Kamchatka Peninsula in the Russian Far East was one of the last territories to become part of Russia during its colonization of Siberia. Here Russians came into contact with its Indigenous peoples - nomadic Koryaks and settled Itelmens. Just like other Indigenous peoples of Russia and the rest of the world, they faced the terrible consequences of colonization. They were forcibly baptized, Russified and expelled from their ancestral territories. Nowadays, Indigenous knowledge here is largely forgotten. This study will attempt to help the Indigenous peoples of Kamchatka repatriate this knowledge by focusing on geographic knowledge, mainly among the Itelmens. …

Promoting Open Access Journals And Open Data To Your Scholarly Community For Maximum Impact, Barbara M. Pope Nov 2022

Promoting Open Access Journals And Open Data To Your Scholarly Community For Maximum Impact, Barbara M. Pope

Faculty Submissions

Open access journals and open data provide researchers with information that would otherwise be behind a paywall. Both are growing exponentially and are widely used and cited by scholars. However, not all open access journals are respected, peer reviewed publications and should be evaluated prior to submitting research. Open data repositories allow researchers to deposit their data to promote it and make it available for others to access and use. Getting the word out about scholarly research is fundamental to other researchers to access it, and augments the possibility of citations and altmetrics scores. Come to this presentation to hear …

The Relationship Between Implicit Attitudes And Displayed Behaviors, Azalia White, Talaia Goodman, Lilly Rogers, Serenity Ogedegbe

Science University Research Symposium (SURS)

Abstract

As society has progressed, there has been increased discussion surrounding prejudice, discrimination, and bias, and, therefore, also further recognition of the universality of internalized bias (Mitchell, 2013). The Implicit Association Test (IAT) is a test that was developed to measure then strength of the unconscious relationship individuals hold between various groups of people and the stereotypes associated with said group (About the IAT, n.d.). In a demonstration of the IAT by the creators, Anthony Greenwald and Mahzarin Banaji, it was found that within the group of participants that were administered the test, 90 to 95 percent of the individuals …

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Participatory approaches to science and decision making, including stakeholder engagement, are increasingly common for managing complex socio-ecological challenges in working landscapes. However, critical questions about stakeholder engagement in this space remain. These include normative, political, and ethical questions concerning who participates, who benefits and loses, what good can be accomplished, and for what, whom, and by who. First, opportunities for addressing justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion interests through engagement, while implied in key conceptual frameworks, remain underexplored in scholarly work and collaborative practice alike. A second line of inquiry relates to research–practice gaps. While both the practice of doing engagement …

"The Village That Learns": A Learning Journey Across Intraventions And Domains Over Two Decades In A Rural Thai Community, Deborah A. Fields, Luis Morales-Navarro, Paulo Blikstein

Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications

What does it mean to become a village that learns? In this paper we document the transformative learning journey of a small Thai village over 24 years, becoming a community that identified, tackled, and iterated on problems, altering their everyday practices and lives. In that process the village shifted from a subsistence agricultural community staggeringly in debt to one known for its sustainable environmental, agricultural, and financial initiatives. To understand the village’s learning journey, we consider the village itself as the primary unit of analysis, applying an iterative case study approach, with chronological sequencing, thematic, and biographical narrative analysis …
