Data From: Statistical Inference For Multimodal Travel Time Reliability, Avinash Unnikrishnan, Miguel Figliozzi, Subhash C. Kochar
TREC Datasets and Databases
Travel time reliability is a key metric of interest to practitioners and researchers because it affects travel choice and the economic competitiveness of urban areas. This research focuses on three travel time reliability metrics – buffer index, modified buffer index, and the relative width of travel time distributions. The key novel contributions of this research include using the multivariate delta method to prove that the sampling distributions of the three travel time reliability metrics are asymptotically normal. The asymptotic standard error for the three reliability metrics is derived. The asymptotic normality and the standard error result are used to arrive …
Re-Imagining Design For Affordable Housing In Mexico, Kenza Fernandez Dominguez
Re-Imagining Design For Affordable Housing In Mexico, Kenza Fernandez Dominguez
Scripps Senior Theses
Since the presidency of Enrique Peña Nieto, affordable housing developments in Mexico have been produced in a massive, unsustainable scale. The speed at which these developments are produced equates to the carelessness that goes into their planning. At large, the developments’ monotonous design is aesthetically dehumanizing and fails to promote a sense of community. These developments lack basic infrastructure, and their residents have abandoned them, which has incentivized increased criminal activity.
In this paper, I will be looking at successful models of affordable housing globally, exploring the histories of communal living, and function of architectural collages. Based on my findings, …

High-Tech Harvests: How Broadband Internet Access Affects Agricultural Firms, Kendall Lowery
Scripps Senior Theses
This thesis analyzes the causal impact of increased broadband accessibility on agricultural firm performance. I use 2017 Federal Communications Commission data on broadband access levels and 2019 Business Dynamics Statistics data on agricultural firm performance in order to analyze the impact of county-level broadband Internet access on three economic performance measures: establishment entry rate, establishment exit rate, and net job creation rate. I construct several ordinary least squares regressions that incorporate relevant population control variables, and find statistically significant evidence that broadband is associated with increased establishment entry rates and net job creation in the agricultural sector. Results related to …
Segregating Cities, Separating Environments: A Look At The Relationship Between Redlining And Polluting Facilities In Philadelphia, Natalie Chartove
Segregating Cities, Separating Environments: A Look At The Relationship Between Redlining And Polluting Facilities In Philadelphia, Natalie Chartove
Scripps Senior Theses
This thesis explores the relationship between federal redlining policy and the siting of air polluting facilities, using a dual approach of geospatial analysis and historiography on Philadelphia as a case study. Geographic Information System (GIS) tools are applied to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) data on air polluting facilities and the Home Owners’ Loan Corporation (HOLC) Residential Security Maps. This analysis is used to determine the number of facilities within redlined neighborhoods and their patterns of density. Findings suggest that higher concentrations of polluting facilities are present in those neighborhoods ranked lowest by the HOLC, while neighborhoods ranked highest show remarkably …

Blue Shifter: A Reverse Quit Model For Law Enforcement Leaders, Samuel Ponce
Doctor of Strategic Leadership (DSL) Capstone Abstracts
Many organizations are currently experiencing the impact of employees quitting their jobs, this reality has left organizations, including police departments, wondering how to slow down the effects of turnover. Employee turnover is witnessed when employees decide to leave their position at the organization and end their work relationship. Turnover can have a detrimental impact on an organization’s finances, employee performance, worker productivity, and customer service. Additionally, turnover is critical to communities since decreased police forces are related to increases in crime. Furthermore, police resignations are higher than ever and are predicted to continue increasing, however, it is not pernicious to …

Transforming Toxic Cultures From The Inside Out: Strategies To Identify & Eliminate Toxic Leadership Tendencies, Jessie Ferreira
Doctor of Strategic Leadership (DSL) Capstone Abstracts
The for-profit and non-profit sectors are becoming increasingly interested in the issues of toxic leadership and problematic organizational cultures. Leaders are more conscious of how toxic habits and tendencies decrease organizations' profitability and overall success. Toxic workplaces and toxic leadership compromise morale, and psychological anguish result from these destructive actions, resulting in billions of dollars spent yearly. A possible solution to these issues lies in increasing our emotional intelligence, specifically, self-awareness.
How can self-awareness be improved? It’s up to each of us to examine ourselves and formulate an effective response to other people and the environment. Daniel Goleman’s Emotional Intelligence …

Evolution And Diffusion Of Icts In The Indian Railways: A Historical Analysis, Ramesh Subramanian
Journal of International Technology and Information Management
The Indian Railway system is one of the largest socio-technical systems in the world. It has existed for over 160 years, starting from the British Colonial times. It continues to play a critical role in present-day India. It’s continued functioning is dependent not only on the personnel who are employed in the railways, but also the technologies that go into the system. A critical technology in the functioning of the railway system is information and communications technologies (ICTs). ICTs are deployed in almost every facet of the railway system. But these ICTs did not manifest themselves recently. They have been …

Humanitarian Workers' Perspectives On Mental Health And Resilience Of Refugee Youth: Implications For School Psychology, Diana Maria Diaków
Humanitarian Workers' Perspectives On Mental Health And Resilience Of Refugee Youth: Implications For School Psychology, Diana Maria Diaków
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Almost half of the 79.5 million forcibly displaced persons worldwide are youth under the age of 18, including refugees. Refugee youth face deliberate threats across all migration stages including violence, abuse, exploitation, poor living conditions, limited or no access to healthcare and education, interrupted family structure, and discrimination. Noteworthy, school psychologists who practice in host countries face new challenges as these diverse youth enroll in public schools. During the migration stage, humanitarian workers are a primary source of psychosocial and educational support for refugee youth and their families. Therefore, the aim of this research study was to inform school psychology …

Green Energy Usage In The United States, Chad Hyer
Green Energy Usage In The United States, Chad Hyer
Ballard Brief
Greenhouse gas emissions are the largest contributor to climate change. Green energy solutions prove a promising approach to remedying these emissions, but major economic reliance on fossil fuels, complacent and dismissive attitudes towards climate change, and political polarization and gridlock have encouraged inaction regarding the adoption of green energy in the United States. Such inaction has led to a host of consequences that are detrimental to the United States's environment, economy, and international image. Some efforts by NG0s and for-profit companies have helped remediate such inaction. This brief aims to address the context, contributing factors, and consequences of this inaction …
Sexual Abuse Of Children In The United States Foster Care System, Abigail Hessing
Sexual Abuse Of Children In The United States Foster Care System, Abigail Hessing
Ballard Brief
Foster care is a long-running and relatively commonplace system in the US: however, in 2019 there were an estimated 400,000 children in foster care, leaving the system overwhelmed and at its peak capacity. Of those children, it is estimated that up to 40% of them had experienced some type of abuse within the system. Looking at sexual abuse specifically, vulnerable children are often targeted by sexual predators, and when grouped together in a system underequipped to provide adequate protection, foster care children can become easily accessible targets for sexual abuse. Caretakers who are undersupported and households that are overfilled create …
Violence Against Refugee Women In The Mena Region, Genevieve Cole, Harriet Huang
Violence Against Refugee Women In The Mena Region, Genevieve Cole, Harriet Huang
Ballard Brief
Refugee women of the Middle East North Africa (MENA) Region are exposed to violence in a variety of ways along their refugee journey. Once within refugee camps, refugee women face high risk spaces for violence, inhibited privacy, as well as unequal gender based power relations between themselves and predominantly male staff. Outside of refugee camps, lack of and improper implementation of cross-border policies allow trafficking networks, authority figures, and other perpetrators of GBV to harm refugee women without fear of repercussions. Victims of GBV can experience a variety of short and long term physical and mental health concerns that can …
A Wolf In Sheep’S Clothing: Christian Nationalist Belief And Behavior In The United States, Tommy Nanto
A Wolf In Sheep’S Clothing: Christian Nationalist Belief And Behavior In The United States, Tommy Nanto
Sigma: Journal of Political and International Studies
Christian nationalism is a buzzword in American politics, but insufficiently researched in the intersection of politics, religion, and psychology. In a country where individual Christian practice is declining, why is this strand of nationalism seemingly on the rise? Through an original study, I establish an empirical link between Christian nationalism and racial resentment, finding that racial resentment is the single greatest predictor of Christian nationalist beliefs. I frame Christian nationalist beliefs separately from behavior. I find initial empirical evidence that racial resentment and Republican partisanship predict both belief and behavior, but religiosity does not predict Christian nationalist behavior.

This chapter shines the light on how helping students re-perceive their experiences with failure allows them to boost confidence, well-being, and belongingness. The authors share a practice for re-perceiving failure—mindfulness-metacognition-mindset shift—which is applicable in nearly every situation where failure or difficulty can be encountered. Guidance is provided for implementing this practice within and beyond research settings.

Part 2: Another Year In Recovery: Virginia's Metropolitan Areas, Dragas Center For Economic Analysis And Policy, Old Dominion University
State of the Commonwealth Reports
If Virginia is to continue its recovery from the pandemic economic shock of 2020, this growth will largely come from Virginia’s metropolitan areas. We ask whether Virginians have returned to the labor force in the aftermath of the pandemic and explore how unemployment rates may not reflect the availability of labor. Lastly, we examine how population change may influence the future of Virginia’s metro areas.

In a field experiment in Nepal, we varied the amount of financial incentives provided to health outreach workers by the ethnicity of the client they recruited for a free sugar level assessment. We find that our differential incentive in the ratio of 2.5∶1, geared toward encouraging a disadvantaged referral, raises the chances of such a referral by 11.6 percentage points (95% confidence interval, 1.1–22.1). This effect translates to an incentive elasticity of referral of 0.2. There is no evidence that the outreach workers refer less sick individuals to benefit from higher financial incentives; nor do they target fewer overall referrals.

The purpose of this study was to determine if social vs nonsocial cues (peer vs light/ tone) can serve as discriminative stimuli to reinstate cocaine seeking. In addition, to assess a potential mechanism, an oxytocin (OT) promoter-linked hM3Dq DREADD was infused into the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus to determine whether peer-induced cocaine seeking is decreased by activation of OT neurons. Male rats underwent twice-daily self-administration sessions, once with cocaine in the presence of one peer (S+) and once with saline in the presence of a different peer (S-). Another experiment used similar procedures, except the discriminative stimuli were nonsocial …
Ambiguous Appalachianness: A Linguistic And Perceptual Investigation Into Arc-Labeled Pennsylvania Counties, Crissandra J. George
Ambiguous Appalachianness: A Linguistic And Perceptual Investigation Into Arc-Labeled Pennsylvania Counties, Crissandra J. George
Theses and Dissertations--Linguistics
The Appalachian Regional Commission (2022) designates 52 of Pennsylvania’s 67 counties as Appalachia, excluding only the southeast portion of the state. Matthew Ferrence, in Appalachia North, states that his "home is sometimes called Appalachia, sometimes Rust Belt, other times Midwest, even though very few who live there would accept any of those labels as correct" (xi). This ambiguous and fluid identity is due to the shaping, forming, and changing of Pennsylvania’s role within society from a founding colony to a thriving state with industry, unselfishly spoiling others, to the grounds of converging identities (Ferrence xi). This ambiguous identity makes …
