Perspective Chapter: Reflections On The Future Of Higher Education In The United Kingdom, Jonathan Blackledge
Perspective Chapter: Reflections On The Future Of Higher Education In The United Kingdom, Jonathan Blackledge
Books/Book chapters
The problems being faced in the UK university sector are considered, how these problems have arisen, what needs to be done about them, and, how the future of the UK’s knowledge economy will be influenced by the strategies currently being implemented by the UK government. This is done by revisiting some examples of problems from the past, and how they were solved. This is undertaken using a framework that is characterised by the following fundamental issues: (i) educational philosophies; (ii) ethics in educational provision; (iii) knowledge economies, and; (iv) the goals of education. In this context, the chapter discusses the …
Unstable Housing In Rural Communities, Amber Theis, Ruth Chalstrom, Kara Richard
Unstable Housing In Rural Communities, Amber Theis, Ruth Chalstrom, Kara Richard
Student Projects
Housing is a crucial part of survival and one’s ability to engage in life, but the increasing difficulty in obtaining affordable, quality, safe housing is of great concern. To better understand the housing crisis and be equipped to advocate on behalf of the unhoused, research was conducted on many factors including correlation with the ACES study, the housing crisis in America, the redefinition of housing terms, psychological impact on both adult and children, and the physical impacts of housing insecurity. It becomes evident that housing is a complex, multi-faceted issue. Nonetheless, it is one that requires significant consideration. There are …

We Are Having This Conversation Now: The Times Of Aids Cultural Production (Introduction And Timeline 1), Alexandra Juhasz, Theodore Kerr
Publications and Research
This is a book about the history, present, and future of the cultural production of AIDS. It takes the form of thirteen short conversations between two AIDS activists, Alex and Ted, whom you will get to know more as you go along. The book focuses on what we call the Times of AIDS. All this talk is inspired by our longtime AIDS activism and is initiated by looking at related cultural production: objects like AIDS activist videos; events like protests; spaces like AIDS memorials; ideas we have learned from within and outside our community; and through our own memories and …
Scaling Up Video Digitization At The University Of Maryland Libraries: A Case Study, Elizabeth M. Caringola, Pamela A. Mcclanahan, Robin C. Pike
Scaling Up Video Digitization At The University Of Maryland Libraries: A Case Study, Elizabeth M. Caringola, Pamela A. Mcclanahan, Robin C. Pike
Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists
In 2015, a team at the University of Maryland Libraries collaborated on a pilot project to digitize 100 VHS tapes from the Liz Lerman Dance Exchange collection and, in doing so, established organizational workflows for video digitization and access. After completing the pilot phase of the project, staff who worked on the project published a case study in this journal that articulated a question echoed throughout that process: “Is this enough?” Enough descriptive metadata? Enough technical metadata? Enough storage space? This article will reflect on the pilot project, detail how the digitization specifications and workflows established during the pilot project …

The Pandemic At Home: Learning From Community-Engaged Covid-19 Documentation Efforts In The Southeastern Us, Colin Post, Kassidy Hof-Mahoney
Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists
Cultural heritage institutions of all kinds around the world responded to the Covid-19 pandemic by launching community-engaged collecting efforts that solicited the submission of documents capturing the daily experience of an historically significant phenomenon. While the pandemic is global in scale, these collecting efforts document the impact of Covid-19 at local or regional levels. This article reports on research to better understand how cultural heritage institutions in the Southeastern United States have developed community-engaged collecting projects. Analyzing data collected from the public websites of 30 institutions, as well as semi-structured interviews with 10 cultural heritage professionals active in the Covid-19 …
Ecological Predictors Of Sexual Well-Being In Women, Rachel Goutman
Ecological Predictors Of Sexual Well-Being In Women, Rachel Goutman
Wayne State University Dissertations
Previous research has shown that female sexuality continues to be suppressed in American society and as a result, women are not achieving their highest levels of sexual well-being (i.e., sexual self-concept, sexual assertiveness, and sexual satisfaction). Because sexual well-being is imperative to overall well-being, it is important for counseling psychologists to be sensitive to the potential role that ecological variables have on women’s current sexual well-being. Utilizing an ecological framework, the aims of this study were to deepen our understanding of how early life microsystem experiences relate to later sexual well-being in women, to assess how current macrosystem experiences of …
Exploring The Effect Of Three-Dimensional Television Advertising On Brand Attitudes: The Roles Of Human Factors, Involvement, Presence, And Flow, Young Bae, Michelle Gordon, Chang-Dae Ham, Jong Woo Jun
Exploring The Effect Of Three-Dimensional Television Advertising On Brand Attitudes: The Roles Of Human Factors, Involvement, Presence, And Flow, Young Bae, Michelle Gordon, Chang-Dae Ham, Jong Woo Jun
Pennsylvania Economic Review
This research explores how consumers process three-dimensional television advertising. It examines the hierarchical relationships among human factors, involvement, presence, flow, and attitudes toward the advertised brand by employing a quasi-experimental design incorporating a real three-dimensional television commercial. This study finds that human factors, i.e., physical fatigue and the inconvenience of wearing three-dimensional glasses, are negatively associated with situational involvement. Situational involvement is in turn positively related to attitudes toward the brand in the three-dimensional television advertisement. Interestingly, feelings of presence significantly mediate the relationship between involvement and attitudes toward the brand, but the flow state does not. Additionally, the physical …
Investigation On How Access To Insurance And Different Mental Health Services Impact Stigmatized Beliefs On Mental Health, Ashley Rossi, Barbie Hubner, Jordan Sferrazza
Investigation On How Access To Insurance And Different Mental Health Services Impact Stigmatized Beliefs On Mental Health, Ashley Rossi, Barbie Hubner, Jordan Sferrazza
The Graduate Review
The current study aimed to investigate how access to insurance impacts mental health-related stigma and help-seeking attitudes, along with public and self-stigmatized views on seeking professional mental health services. Participants (N = 192) were recruited via Bridgewater State University Student Announcements and through convenience sampling. Individuals completed a survey consisting of five self-created questions and three different scales related to insurance coverage, mental health services, stigma, and help-seeking attitudes. We expected to find those with public insurance coverage would have higher self-stigmatized beliefs and lower help-seeking attitudes, but this hypothesis was not supported. We also expected that those with …
Childhood Sexual Abuse In Boys Under The Age Of 18: Nonverbal Disclosure Patterns Through Behavior, Matthew J. Luz
Childhood Sexual Abuse In Boys Under The Age Of 18: Nonverbal Disclosure Patterns Through Behavior, Matthew J. Luz
The Graduate Review
Adverse childhood experiences (ACE) include being exposed to or victimized by physical, emotional, or sexual abuse; if left untreated, traumas may disrupt normative biopsychosocial development. Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) is a phenomenon investigated by many researchers, however, the scientific community suspects CSA in boys is underreported. Since there are significant gender differences in CSA verbal disclosures, examining nonverbal disclosures in boys through overt, sexualized behaviors may help clinicians confirm suspected cases of CSA. Since most research investigates verbal disclosures of sexual abuse, this study will investigate nonverbal disclosure in boys between the ages of 6 through 10 using naturalistic observations …
Observing The Relationship Between Health Locus Of Control And Help-Seeking Attitudes: A Multicultural Perspective, Jaymmy Cruz Matias, Erica A. English, Alan J. Stamper
Observing The Relationship Between Health Locus Of Control And Help-Seeking Attitudes: A Multicultural Perspective, Jaymmy Cruz Matias, Erica A. English, Alan J. Stamper
The Graduate Review
Prior research has suggested that race/ethnicity and health locus of control (LOC) have an impact on mental health help-seeking attitudes. We investigated the relationship between these variables by administering a survey to 197 participants. We also explored the relationship between passive or active spiritual LOC and help-seeking attitudes. We found that White participants were more likely to seek out psychological help from primary care physicians, psychiatrists, and other mental health professionals compared to all other ethnic groups, which supported our second hypothesis. Also, all other ethnic groups were more likely to seek out spiritual help for psychological issues compared to …

Practical Femininity: The Student Development Of Legally Blonde’S Elle Woods, Elizabeth S. Rodericks
The Graduate Review
College experiences often involve challenges that can provide the impetus for personal and professional growth. Likewise, Elle Woods of the film Legally Blonde undergoes multiple significant changes in her sense of identity, morality, and ability to take charge of her own life after she is forced to radically change her perspective and priorities. This paper covers her development as a law student and individual according to the student development theories of Chickering’s Seven Vectors of Identity Development, Gilligan’s Theory of Women’s Moral Development, and Baxter Magolda’s Self-Authorship Theory. As a result of her growth, Elle Woods flourishes into a confident, …
Calling Attention To Campus Trends: Let’S Talk About Wellness, Mandy Magalhaes, Rachel Cullity
Calling Attention To Campus Trends: Let’S Talk About Wellness, Mandy Magalhaes, Rachel Cullity
The Graduate Review
Abstract
This article explores the emerging focus on self-care and wellness amongst college students. In this article, the authors highlight the cultural shift from the “grind culture,” the complete and exhaustive dedication towards one’s work, to a focus on individual and community well being and how educational institutions are responding to students’ needs (Absher, 2020). Bridgewater State University's current response to student wellness is discussed, with a focus on the School of Social Work’s research efforts, programs and services being implemented, from the voices of graduate students. Self-care and wellness is an emerging conversation occurring in many professions and educational …
Stigma And Criminalization Of Mental Health In An Inpatient Versus Jail Setting, Zachary C. B. Dumay, Jessica T. Harnais, Christina M. Cerminara
Stigma And Criminalization Of Mental Health In An Inpatient Versus Jail Setting, Zachary C. B. Dumay, Jessica T. Harnais, Christina M. Cerminara
The Graduate Review
Stigmatization is the perceived, negative stereotype assigned to a group of individuals. This stigmatization has contributed to the criminalization of mental health, meaning that individuals with mental health issues are more likely to be arrested for behaviors that are not criminal. This project examines mental health stigma toward an individual in a psychiatric setting and a correctional setting. We hypothesized that when reading a vignette about an individual experiencing a mental health crisis, participants will stigmatize them more if they are incarcerated than if they are in a psychiatric facility. Results showed that participants exhibited a higher level of discrimination …
Childhood Adversity And Alexithymia: Implications For Health Status In An Urban Police Sample, Christopher P. Urbanik
Childhood Adversity And Alexithymia: Implications For Health Status In An Urban Police Sample, Christopher P. Urbanik
Wayne State University Dissertations
American law enforcement is regarded as one of the most stressful occupations in the United States, involving repeated exposure to threatening or challenging encounters and the risk of severe injury and death. A voluminous literature has documented various psychophysiological implications of police stress, including morbidity and premature mortality. Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are potentially traumatic stressors during one’s formative years, such as abuse, neglect, and household violence and dysfunction. ACEs have been linked to increased mental and physical health risks, yet ACEs have not been studied in police officers. Given the increase in the level of stress experienced by today’s …
The Office Of Bereavement Support: An Intervention To Support Grieving Students, Gabriellia Hartz
The Office Of Bereavement Support: An Intervention To Support Grieving Students, Gabriellia Hartz
West Chester University Master’s Theses
In this thesis, I propose an intervention that emphasizes compassion and support that student affairs professionals must have as students process their grief. My intervention aims to create a safe and welcoming space for students dealing with bereavement. To address this concern, I utilize personal experiences along with Worden’s (2008) Four-Phase Task model, and Kübler- Ross’s (1969) five-stage framework of grief. The frameworks listed throughout this thesis have helped shape the intervention proposed. Individuals who are grieving and working toward their higher education degree need support from those around them, especially their university, faculty and staff members, and peers.

Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences
The purpose of this study was to determine how communicating authentic agricultural information using an infographic affects Millennial and Generation Z students’ perceptions of genetically modified organisms (GMO) and to determine the perceptions of college students regarding the infographic used to convey agricultural messages. This study used survey research methods with open- and closed-ended questions administered through Qualtrics. The questionnaire was designed with five sections including a pre-questionnaire, content presentation, post-questionnaire, infographic perception questionnaire, and demographics section. All questions in the pre- and post- questionnaire were focused on the content found in the researcher developed infographic. Overall, participants increased accuracy …
Preventative Weed Management Strategies In Arkansas Tomato Production, Gracie E. Morrison, Matthew Bertucci
Preventative Weed Management Strategies In Arkansas Tomato Production, Gracie E. Morrison, Matthew Bertucci
Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences
Cost-effective weed suppression is an important consideration for tomato growers. Growers often choose methods which minimize hand labor, as hand weeding can be prohibitively expensive. This project determined economic viability of high tunnel tomatoes treated with several methods of weed control, both organic and chemical. These methods included: 2-week hand weeding, 1-week hand weeding, preemergent herbicide application (plots sprayed with herbicide prior to weed emergence), straw mulch (plots bedded with straw), landscape fabric (plots covered in fabric), and untreated weedy control plots. These six treatments were applied to randomized blocks in a high tunnel. Weeding, planting, and harvesting were all …
Using Poultry To Enhance Food Security In Stann Creek, Belize, Emily Spatz, Lisa S. Wood
Using Poultry To Enhance Food Security In Stann Creek, Belize, Emily Spatz, Lisa S. Wood
Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences
Food insecurity is a growing issue in developing and developed countries alike, and in countries like Belize, the prevalence of hunger has soared in recent years. Not having access to diets with sufficient calories and nutrients leads to a host of developmental issues, including stunting and cognitive delays. The purpose of this work was to create an all-encompassing manual for small-scale poultry production in order to provide nourishment for the students and staff of a school in Belize. After determining that the best way to meet the school’s needs was through dual-purpose birds, background research was conducted to determine small-scale …

Pandemics And Animal Welfare: A Quantitative Inquiry Into How The Covid-19 Pandemic Has Affected The Companion Animal Industry In Northwest Arkansas, Kayla N. Desmet, Isabel M. Whitehead
Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences
Since the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic in late 2019, industries have been impacted globally. The companion animal care industry has not received much recognition in mainstream news, and as pandemic stressors increased individual facilities such as animal rescues, shelters, day care and boarding facilities felt the pressures associated with it. Little is known about the long-term effects of the pandemic on these facilities and how companion animal care may have changed. The purpose of this study was to explore the day-to-day impacts and long-term effects of COVID-19 on the companion animal industry in Northwest Arkansas from early 2020 to …
Psychological Resilience Of Entrepreneurs: A Review And Agenda For Future Research, Robert J. Pidduck
Psychological Resilience Of Entrepreneurs: A Review And Agenda For Future Research, Robert J. Pidduck
Management Faculty Publications
Given that entrepreneurs face substantial adversity in initiating and developing new ventures, a burgeoning stream of research has sought to understand the concept of entrepreneurs’ psychological resilience. To structure and synthesize what we know about entrepreneurs’ psychological resilience, we systematically review the empirical literature to provide insights on how it has been conceptualized and operationalized, along with its key antecedents and outcomes. Based on our review, we advance a promising agenda for future research, grounded in connecting the psychological resilience of entrepreneurs to other research areas connected to the new venture development process. Overall, we point to the urgent need …
Social Support, Self-Esteem, And Levels Of Stress, Depression, And Anxiety During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Candace Ying Tsai
Social Support, Self-Esteem, And Levels Of Stress, Depression, And Anxiety During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Candace Ying Tsai
Scripps Senior Theses
The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in unprecedented disruptions to daily routines and social connections, which negatively impacted the mental health and well-being of many. Unsurprisingly, the most utilized coping strategy during the pandemic involved social support. However, those low in self-esteem seem to question others’ positive regard and continued acceptance, and overall perceive others’ behavior more negatively than those with high self-esteem (Murray, Holmes, et al., 1998). The proposed correlational study will examine the effects of social support and self-esteem on stress, anxiety, and depression during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as investigate whether one’s self-esteem affects the influence that social …
Why Do Rich People Not Retire?, Xiya Li
Why Do Rich People Not Retire?, Xiya Li
Scripps Senior Theses
Work and leisure are central to the human condition. Scholars from many fields have tried to understand why Americans work so much. Many people believe that when they have enough money, they will retire. However, many people are not willing to retire even if they have enough money to do so. Most people who do not have enough money to retire do not even get any amount of leisure from their jobs. If the view that enough money directly leads to retirement is wrong, then it is time to reconsider using this logic to think of the possibility of retiring. …
Analyzing College On-Campus Residency Agglomeration Benefits And Their Impact On Student Outcomes, Emily Pedace
Analyzing College On-Campus Residency Agglomeration Benefits And Their Impact On Student Outcomes, Emily Pedace
Scripps Senior Theses
Economies of agglomeration have been shown to increase productivity in part due to technological/ knowledge spillovers. I look at public colleges and universities in California and Texas to examine if students living on-campus can generate enough agglomeration to boost productivity in the students. I use a unique data set with information collected from Common Data Sets, self-reported by the schools. When using an OLS regression with the averages of these variables, higher averages of on-campus residence is correlated to higher average graduation and retention rates for Texas and California. When using a fixed effects panel regression, I find changes in …
County Walkability And Small Business Receipts, Talia Perluss
County Walkability And Small Business Receipts, Talia Perluss
Scripps Senior Theses
This thesis explores the correlation between county walkability and small business receipts, as well as other possible demographic variables that could explain the success of small businesses, by using a fixed-effect panel regression model. Using county-level data in the years 2012 and 2017, this paper finds that there is a significant correlation between an increase in walkability and an increase in receipts. When running the fixed-effect regressions, this paper found that there is a moderately high positive correlation between walkability and per capita income, suggesting that the effects of an increase in walkability may also capture the effects of an …
The Economic And Social Decline Of Women's Colleges Across The United States, Alexandra Isabelle Rivasplata
The Economic And Social Decline Of Women's Colleges Across The United States, Alexandra Isabelle Rivasplata
Scripps Senior Theses
Women have been attending college at a greater rate than men for several decades. However, women’s colleges have been shutting down or transitioning to coeducation at incredibly high rates. Literature demonstrates the importance of women’s colleges due to their benefits on students’ future career success and psychological wellbeing. However, there is less research concerning the decline of women's colleges, and none regarding the economic and quantitative factors influencing their closures. Using a newly constructed, completely original data set, I perform a logistic regression and analyze variables related to the survival of women’s colleges. I find a high statistical significance of …

Our Silence Will Not Protect Us . . . And Neither Will J. Edgar Hoover: Reclaiming Critical Race Theory Under The New Mccarthyism, Christina Hsu Accomando, Kristin J. Anderson
Humboldt Journal of Social Relations
The right-wing attack against critical race theory is the latest manufactured panic designed to whip up supporters of a party beholden to Donald Trump. Since late 2020, hundreds of measures have been introduced across the U.S. to ban antiracism education, critical race theory, the 1619 Project, and any understanding of racism as systemic and embedded in U.S. history and law. While an understandable reaction of educators is to declare that they are not teaching critical race theory, our position is to reclaim critical race theory for the powerful lens it offers in understanding the history of the U.S., the protracted …
Human Trafficking Of People With A Disability: An Analysis Of State And Federal Cases, Andrea Nichols, Erin Heil
Human Trafficking Of People With A Disability: An Analysis Of State And Federal Cases, Andrea Nichols, Erin Heil
Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence
The current academic discourse examining human trafficking is lacking in focus on survivors with a disability. The increased likelihood of abuse experienced by people with a disability is well documented in the research literature, and a small body of research indicates heightened sex trafficking victimization of minor girls with a disability. Yet, very little research specifically examines sex and/or labor trafficking of people with a disability, and no systematic research analyzes prosecuted cases of trafficking with disability as the focal point of analysis. Drawing from a content analysis of 18 federal and 17 state cases of human trafficking, the current …
Neo-Emancipatory Sex Education In Germany: Sexual Abuse And Gender Confusion, Bernd Ahrbeck, Karla Etschenberg, Marion Felder
Neo-Emancipatory Sex Education In Germany: Sexual Abuse And Gender Confusion, Bernd Ahrbeck, Karla Etschenberg, Marion Felder
Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence
This article focuses on two related areas of concern with regard to sex education and implications for children and youth in Germany. The first one is the history of the currently dominant neo-emancipatory sexual education and its implications for today. This direction of sex education is highly influenced by theories of Helmut Kentler who with the help of the German city of Berlin youth protection services department sent homeless and troubled boys to known pedophiles for care. This experiment went on for 30 years, ending in 2001. Only now has the extend of this horrific practice been fully discovered. The …
