Completion Predictors For Students Who Transfer-In To A Community College, Erin Kristina Reeder
Completion Predictors For Students Who Transfer-In To A Community College, Erin Kristina Reeder
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The problem that was addressed through this study is that the credential completion rate for transfer-in students (TIS) is lower than for first-time, full-time students (FTFT) at Peninsula Community College (PCC, a pseudonym). The purpose of this quantitative study was to determine if the completion input (gender, race/ethnicity, age) and environment (number of transfer credits accepted) variables predict credential completion for credential-seeking TIS at PCC. Astin’s input-environment-outcome model served as the framework, in which a student’s success is a function of the student’s background before enrolling and the experiences while attending college. Deidentified archival data for TIS enrolled in fall …

Association Of The Use Of Combination Therapy Self-Management Of Prediabetes And Type-2 Diabetes Mellitus In Adults, Celestina Reed
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Diabetes is a long-lasting chronic health condition that encompasses three types: Type 1, Type 2, and gestational diabetes. The disease affects how the body breaks down food into energy. It is an insulin-deficient disease and causes heart disease, vision loss, and kidney disease. Investigators of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Diabetes Association evaluated patient treatment preferences to determine the upsurge in patient health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and optimum health. The literature revealed that patients' preferences consisted of therapies and achievable goal setting using the health belief model (HBM) framework. This quantitative research aimed to …
Mothers’ Lived Experiences Of Parenting Classes And Maintaining Sobriety During Recovery, Christina Wolfe Rumford
Mothers’ Lived Experiences Of Parenting Classes And Maintaining Sobriety During Recovery, Christina Wolfe Rumford
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractA mother in recovery must have a solid grasp on coping skills, mental health, and the relationship with her children to maintain her sobriety. But it is not known how parenting classes for mothers in addiction treatment feature in these mothers’ recovery. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to understand the lived experiences of mothers in parenting classes during addiction treatment to prevent relapse. The theory for this study was Bandura’s social cognitive theory of substance abuse. The study examined the lived experiences of mothers with young children who have attended parenting classes as part of their recovery …

Risk Management In Wastewater Treatment Policy Creation And Revision, Emily Silver
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The focus of this professional administrative study was risk management in the field of wastewater treatment. The emphasis was on the creation and revision of policies to help reduce overall agency risk factors. The guiding question for the study focused on what revisions to the client organization’s safety policy and personnel policies and procedures would decrease the agency risk. A combination of both safety and policy change theories provided the basis for the study’s conceptual framework. This blended approach allowed for a more thorough and comprehensive interpretation of the collected data. In this qualitative case study, data pertinent to risk …

The Perception And The Perceived Readiness Of Individuals While Working Remotely During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Argyro Tsampis-Tripodis
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractAt the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, some individuals were sent home to work remotely to honor social distancing measures. Individuals were challenged to create a workspace, obtain the technology needed, and create a balance between work and private life. Emotional distress may have been caused by overlapping work into personal life or psychological problems due to social distancing for some individuals. The current research aimed to understand the lived experiences of the individuals sent home to work remotely during the Covid-19 pandemic. A transcendental phenomenon methodology captured the insights, adaptations, and perspectives of individuals working remotely during the Covid-19 …
Impacts Of Immigration Detention On Sub-Saharan Africa Asylum Seekers In The United States, Felix Vescovi Ogunsuyi
Impacts Of Immigration Detention On Sub-Saharan Africa Asylum Seekers In The United States, Felix Vescovi Ogunsuyi
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Detaining asylum seekers has become an established practice in many countries. There is a large body of research suggesting that immigration detention causes asylum seekers harm. However, the focus of these studies has been on diagnosable disorders and mental health, with no descriptive understanding of how detention and resettlement are experienced and conceptualized by asylum seekers. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to examine how formerly detained asylum seekers from sub-Saharan African countries perceive the impact of detention on their resettlement experience in the United States. Ager and Strang’s conceptual framework of refugee integration was used as the study’s …

Academic Self-Efficacy And Satisfaction Among College Students With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Cannda Wilbanks
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Over decades, researchers have identified an increase in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) diagnosis resulting in a growing population of students with ASD attending higher education environments. Several researchers have found that individuals with ASD experience challenges in on-campus college settings. Examining other postsecondary learning environments may have provided insight into settings that may reduce the challenges students with ASD experience. The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine differences in self-efficacy and satisfaction among college students with ASD enrolled in on-campus-only, blended, and online learning environments. The theoretical foundations were Oliver’s social model of disability and Bandura’s self-efficacy theory. …

Services For Homeless Veterans: A Study Of Access To Benefits, Sheryl Maddox Williams
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractHomelessness among veterans in the United States is a multifaceted social and health concern that has continued to increase despite immense efforts to minimize and eliminate this issue. Numerous organizations have dedicated resources; however, many veterans do not use benefits and resources that are available to them, and homelessness remains a health and social concern. The purpose of this study was to explore and describe how individual and interpersonal barriers, community factors, organizational structure, and existing policies for assistance are perceived by support staff that work with veterans with mental disorders who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. …

Effects Of Tommy John Surgery, Draft Order, And Monetary Factors On The Value Of Pitchers In Major League Baseball, Jonathan P. Wong
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this thesis is to determine what effects draft order, monetary earnings, and Tommy John Surgery (TJS) have on the perceived value of a pitcher in Major League Baseball (MLB). For the context of this thesis, value will be defined as a player's ability to contribute to their team's wins in a positive manner. TJS has become synonymous with MLB and baseball as a sport, and many are either skeptical of its effects or over-assuming of its benefits. The three aforementioned areas of concerns were used to structure the thesis, as each dependent outcome is analyzed in a …
Stigma Toward People With Opioid Use Disorder In Southwest Michigan, Kathy A. Carruthers
Stigma Toward People With Opioid Use Disorder In Southwest Michigan, Kathy A. Carruthers
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The opioid epidemic is one of the largest health problems in America. In one Southwest Michigan county, opioid overdose deaths increased from 36 deaths in 2008 to 104 deaths in 2017. In the same county, stigma was identified as the highest-ranked reason people do not seek opioid use disorder (OUD) treatment. The purpose of this study was to examine knowledge that social work practitioners have regarding stigma toward people who inject drugs with OUD in Southwest Michigan. The purpose aligned with social work values as people with OUD are marginalized and cannot advocate for themselves. The theoretical framework that guided …

Voip Technology In Grassroots Politics: Transforming Political Culture And Practice?, Rosemary Hancock
IES Papers and Journal Articles
This article investigates how the adoption and use of digital technologies shape political culture and practice in grassroots political groups, particularly focusing on how VOIP technologies enable and/or constrain groups to work across physical space and form political relationships among participants. While this article is grounded in a case study of one broad-based coalition in Sydney, Australia, the findings expand our understanding of how digital technology shapes political culture and practice in grassroots spaces by (a) analysing an organisation both before and after the adoption of VOIP technology and (b) focusing on a case study where the organisation attempted to …
Wild Animal Welfare, Clare Palmer, Peter Sandøe
Wild Animal Welfare, Clare Palmer, Peter Sandøe
Animal Sentience
Rowan et al’s article provides an overview of developments in the science of animal sentience and its links to animal welfare policy, especially regarding farm animals. But changing ideas of animal sentience and welfare are also important for managing wild and other free-living animals. We ask how the welfare of these animals differs from that of farmed animals, especially how the ability to make autonomous choices may matter. We suggest that more research into wild animal welfare is needed to make informed policy decisions, for example, about using animals in rewilding projects and choosing between policies of culling and fertility …

Impact Of The Covid-19 Outbreak On Adolescent Schoolgirls’ Education In Rural Sierra Leone, Mohamed Hassimiu Barrie
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Since 1990, Sierra Leone has experienced several major emergencies that required global attention: a decade-long rebel war, Ebola and COVID-19 outbreaks. Each disproportionately affected schoolgirls’ educations. In 2021, the government of Sierra Leone introduced the Radical Inclusion Policy to support the education of girls and lift a policy that banned pregnant girls from attending mainstream schools to allow thousands of schoolgirls who were impregnated during the Ebola and COVID-19 outbreaks to return to schools. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak on the education of adolescent schoolgirls in rural Sierra Leone, …

Exploring Student Loan Borrower’S Financial Decisions After Florida Enacted Statute 1009.45, Vijantie Michelle Boodoo
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Florida implemented Statute 1009.45 as of July 1, 2017, to require colleges and universities to provide annual student loan debt notifications to students to inform them about their student loan obligations. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to examine how college students in the State of Florida make financial decisions about their education, focusing on the influence of the notifications and what additional supports would help them improve their decision-making. There was a gap in the literature in identifying what information students were using from the notification. Rational choice and human capital theories were used for the conceptual …
Georgia Public Fire Investigators’ Behavioral Approach To Fire Scene Investigation, Kyle R. Bradshaw
Georgia Public Fire Investigators’ Behavioral Approach To Fire Scene Investigation, Kyle R. Bradshaw
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Wrongful prosecutions for the crime of arson are occurring. An identified cause of this problem is the investigation processes used by public fire investigators. The purpose of this general qualitative study was to identify the targeted behaviors that influence public fire investigators when conducting fire scene investigation. Street-level bureaucracy theory indicates public fire investigators are street-level bureaucrats (SLBs). The intent of this study was to identify behavioral interventions that can be implemented to aid public fire investigators in their approach to fire scene investigation. Semistructured interviews were conducted with a purposeful sample of 10 public fire investigators in a metropolitan …
A Qualitative Analysis Of Lived Experiences Of Community Garden Participants In Local Food Deserts, Abigail Gwendolyn Brock
A Qualitative Analysis Of Lived Experiences Of Community Garden Participants In Local Food Deserts, Abigail Gwendolyn Brock
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Community gardens were designed to bring communities together while providing an area of comfort and solace, social interactions, and a physical place for those living in apartments or areas in which they are not able to garden. Often, community gardens are started by nonprofit organizations looking to solve problems that plague urban areas. An abundance of literature described and analyzed the role of community gardens in addressing food insecurities, but little has been done in understanding the experiences of participants in the garden. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to gather and identify the perceptions and thoughts of community …

Human Service Professionals’ Perceived Ability To Support Title I Schools During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Michael Dewayne Brown
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Human service professional practitioners (HSPPs) who work in Title I schools help students overcome challenges including absenteeism and behavioral problems and serve as liaisons between the school, family, and student. The pivot to online education during the COVID-19 school shutdowns meant that HSPP services also pivoted. The purpose of this generic qualitative study was to understand how HSPPs perceived their ability to serve Title I students during the pandemic through the lens of Bandura’s self-efficacy theory. Semistructured interviews were conducted with 15 HSPPs who delivered services to Title I students before and during the pandemic. Participants reported their service delivery …
Human Services Caseworkers’ Experiences Working Remotely During Covid-19, Sandra Lachelle Brown
Human Services Caseworkers’ Experiences Working Remotely During Covid-19, Sandra Lachelle Brown
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Human services caseworkers have shifted from traditional means of providing services to their clients since the onset of COVID-19. Providing services and/or resources to clients from the home environment leads to work responsibilities and family demands that may affect work-life balance. Researchers have studied working remotely, but they have not explored human services caseworkers and their experiences of providing remote services during a pandemic. The purpose of this qualitative generic study was to explore human services caseworkers’ experiences with work-life balance while providing remote services versus face-to-face services to clients during a pandemic. Semistructured interviews were conducted with 12 human …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This study explored the experiences of nonviolent women offenders over the age of 50 of all ethnicities who were formerly incarcerated and their involvement with restorative justice and recidivism from a public policy perspective. Although there was prior research on reentry of ex-offenders, the problem was that few studies focused on the barriers and success factors of reentry services for older female ex-offenders 50 years or older. The purpose of the study was to explore restorative justice and recidivism in formerly incarcerated women who were nonviolent offenders in an East Coast state with a focus on the barriers and success …
Strategies For Improving The Effectiveness Of Internal Control Processes In Nonprofit Organizations, Annie Selorm Dumoga
Strategies For Improving The Effectiveness Of Internal Control Processes In Nonprofit Organizations, Annie Selorm Dumoga
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Some leaders of nonprofit organizations (NPOs) lack financial strategies to develop and implement effective internal controls for their financial health and the continuation of their organizations’ provision of humanitarian services. The failure of leaders in NPOs to implement adequate internal controls results in insolvency, the inability to pay off debts, and threatens the ability to provide needed social services. Grounded in the Committee of Sponsoring Organization's internal control integrated framework, the purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to explore strategies NPO leaders used to develop and implement effective internal controls for their organization's financial health and ability to …

Many car seats are installed incorrectly, and many children under the age of 6 are seriously injured or killed in a motor vehicle crash. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between age of child, age of parent/caregiver, attitudes, and behaviors of child passenger safety among parents and caregivers in South Carolina. The influence of age and attitude on consistent car seat use was also examined. The study was based on the theory of planned behavior. A survey design featuring questions …
Employee Perceived Justice As Mediator Between Ethical Leadership And Employee Turnover Intention, Moaiad Almousa
Employee Perceived Justice As Mediator Between Ethical Leadership And Employee Turnover Intention, Moaiad Almousa
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The means by which business leaders implement human resources management strategies to improve employee retention during crisis is currently not well understood. This indicates that theoretical understanding of the relationship between ethical leadership behaviors, perceptions of justice, and employee turnover in the context of crises is deficient. The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating effect, if any, of perceived overall justice on the relationship between ethical leadership behaviors and employee turnover intention during a moment of crisis, the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. Social learning theory and the categorical framework of context provided a theoretical foundation …

Maternal Identity Of Modern-Day Mothers With High Identity Centrality, Kimberly Dianne Anderson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore conceptualization of maternal identity among mothers with high identity centrality in suburban Virginia. The role of motherhood is culturally recognized as central to female identity, which historically has been described, defined, and maintained through various forms of media. This study involved using the social identity and self-categorization theories as explanatory frameworks to address development and maintenance of maternal identity. A qualitative approach was used to explore identity centrality and conceptualization of maternal identity with a purposefully sampled group of 10 mothers. Data were collected via demographic surveys followed by one-on-one semi-structured …
Staff Education To Improve Knowledge About Suicide Screening, Cidia Alysia Awyie
Staff Education To Improve Knowledge About Suicide Screening, Cidia Alysia Awyie
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractHealthcare workers play an essential role in healthcare facilities to help patients with mental health challenges and those at risk of committing suicide. The practice gap that the healthcare facility was experiencing was a knowledge deficit among healthcare staff on the importance of suicide screening. The importance of equipping staff with suicide screening knowledge is to help decrease suicide attempts, suicide thoughts, and completed suicide in patients. The practice-focused question for this staff education project asked if staff education for nursing staff and psychiatrists would increase their knowledge about suicide prevention methods and suicide screening techniques. The purpose of the …
Investigation Of Realism In Facial Characteristics And Anthropomorphic Language In The Design Of Multimedia Instruction, Ecem Olcum
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Emotional design elements have recently been added to the research in cognitive load and multimedia learning (Um et al., 2012). One aspect of eliciting positive emotions is to use anthropomorphic design, which has been found to increase learning performance (Um et al., 2012; Plass et al., 2014; Park et al., 2015; Schneider et al., 2018). The current research aimed to investigate three design factors in three studies: anthropomorphism in verbal and visual design, single-frame or multi-frame illustrations, and realism of the anthropomorphic visual design. The first study confirmed that the anthropomorphic verbal and visual materials were perceived as anthropomorphic by …

The Ceramic Sequence For Vista Alegre, Quintana Roo, Mexico., Carrie Tucker
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
This thesis creates a ceramic chronology for the site of Vista Alegre, a Middle Preclassic-Postclassic Maya port site on the northern coast of Quintana Roo, Mexico. As a member of the Proyecto Costa Escondida (PCE), I analyzed a sample of ceramic material (14,326 sherds) from three off-structure test units and their extensions (Pozos 8, 8A, 10, 12, 12A, and 12B). I completed "type: variety-mode" identification for 13,114 identifiable sherds with the help of the PCE and the Yucatán INAH ceramoteca facility, and I found a total of 101 established ceramic types and varieties, and twenty-five "specials" for which only the …
Can Feeling Like An Imposter Be Favorable? A Qualitative Study On The Role Of Appraisal In Harnessing The Imposter Phenomenon For Growth, Emily Hill
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
The imposter phenomenon is a psychological experience characterized by feelings of self-doubt and personal incompetence that persist despite evidence of achievement and success. Employees with these imposter-like thoughts feel as if they ended up in notable roles and positions not because of merit, but from oversight or luck. Research and popular press articles have portrayed the imposter phenomenon as a negative experience, bringing costs to the individual's well-being and work life. Yet, recent research has revealed that perhaps a favorable trajectory to the imposter experience might exist. To address this question, participants were identified and interviewed using a two-phase, sequential …
An Examination Of Gender-Based Differences In Perceptions Of Supervisor Support, Ann Schlotzhauer
An Examination Of Gender-Based Differences In Perceptions Of Supervisor Support, Ann Schlotzhauer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Perceived supervisor support and particularly emotional support possess conceptual overlap with stereotypes of femininity. The present study extends understanding of perceived supervisor support by applying the agency and communality framework of gender stereotypes and role congruity theory. This study employed a vignette research design to examine differential ratings of male and female supervisors who were depicted engaging in (a) no support, (b) instrumental support, (c) emotional support, or (d) instrumental and emotional support. Results suggest that supportive supervision is indeed viewed as feminine in nature. Further, findings suggest that female supervisors engaging in emotional support behaviors are preferred over equivalently …
