With this goal, the University of Rhode Island’s Office for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning has partnered with instruction librarians since 2018 in developing and facilitating a High Impact Teaching Seminar for faculty. Participants will learn about the seminar’s theoretical framework, impact and structure, engage in …
Agricultural Productivity And Deforestation: Evidence From Brazil, Dmitri Szerman, Juliano Assunção, Molly Lipscomb, Ahmed Mushfiq Mobarak
Agricultural Productivity And Deforestation: Evidence From Brazil, Dmitri Szerman, Juliano Assunção, Molly Lipscomb, Ahmed Mushfiq Mobarak
Discussion Papers
When agricultural productivity improves, farmers may react by expanding farming and further encroach on forest lands, or they may choose to intensify and produce more output with less land. We specify the conditions under which agricultural productivity can have such ambiguous effects on deforestation. We then examine the predictions of that model using county-level data from five waves of the Brazilian Census of Agriculture and satellite-based measures of land use. We identify productivity shocks using exogenous variation in rural electrification in Brazil during 1960-2000. We show that locations suitable for hydropower generation experienced improvements in crop yields, and that credit-constrained …

The article "Middle Powers and the U.S.-Iran Conflict" by Erika Simpson examines the geopolitical ramifications of the Trump administration's targeted killing of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani. It explores Iran's military retaliation and the broader implications for Middle Eastern stability, including potential threats to NATO allies. The piece highlights the precarious position of middle powers like Canada, emphasizing their limited strategic options but potential role in advocating restraint and negotiation. The article also delves into the impact of the conflict on NATO unity, the potential for a power vacuum in Iraq, and the broader international legal and diplomatic challenges. It concludes …
Tech And Authoritarianism: How The People’S Republic Of China Is Using Data To Control Hong Kong And Why The U.S. Is Vulnerable, Bryce Neary
Seattle Journal of Technology, Environmental, & Innovation Law
The aim of this article is to analyze and compare current events in the People's Republic of China and the United States to discuss the moral dilemmas that arise when establishing the boundary between national security interests and individual privacy rights. As we continue to intertwine our lives with technology, it has become increasingly important to establish clear privacy rights. The question then becomes: at what point should individuals sacrifice their rights for what the government considers the "greater good" of the country?
Further, this article analyzes the development of U.S. privacy law and its relationship to national security, technology, …

Impact Of Emotional Intelligence On Interprofessional Teamwork, Interprofessional Communication, And Interprofessional Leadership, Kathleen M. Cox
Impact Of Emotional Intelligence On Interprofessional Teamwork, Interprofessional Communication, And Interprofessional Leadership, Kathleen M. Cox
Nursing Theses and Dissertations
Objective: The purpose of this body of work was to explore relationships among emotional intelligence (EI) and interprofessional (IP) competency domains to enhance IP team dynamics and communication.
Background: Decentralization of healthcare delivery may hinder effective handoffs creating opportunity for miscommunication of vital information and subsequent medical errors. Fostering effective communication is paramount for IP teams; however, differing communication styles can promote misunderstanding and conflict. Behavioral aspects of team dynamics and communication that comprise EI may be a solution but are rarely addressed in educational and safety programs.
Methods: Included in this portfolio are three manuscripts that help elucidate …

Weather Impacts The Agricultural Production Efficiency Of Wheat: The Importance Of Precipitation Shocks, Bowen Chen, Elliott James Dennis, Allen M. Featherstone
Cornhusker Economics
Weather affects the production environment that farmers face and, in some cases, can affect their ability to efficiently convert production inputs into outputs. Despite that the effect of weather shocks on agricultural production has been well documented (Donaldson, 1968; Ito and Kurosaki, 2009; Schlenker and Roberts, 2009; Tack, Barkley, and Nalley, 2015), few studies have accounted for the weather as a source of production inefficiency or lower agricultural productivity. In a recently published paper, we showed the effects that weather has on the production efficiency of winter wheat farms and discussed some of the implications that climate change could …

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications
The niche-diversity hypothesis proposes that personality structure arises from the affordances of unique trait combinations within a society. It predicts that personality traits will be both more variable and differentiated in populations with more distinct social and ecological niches. Prior tests of this hypothesis in 55 nations suffered from potential confounds associated with differences in the measurement properties of personality scales across groups. Using psychometric methods for the approximation of cross-national measurement invariance, we tested the niche-diversity hypothesis in a sample of 115 nations (N = 685,089). We found that an index of niche diversity was robustly associated with …

Chemical Weapons And Their Unforeseen Impact On Health And The Environment, Alexandra Chen
Seattle Journal of Technology, Environmental, & Innovation Law
The May 2020 police murder of George Floyd catalyzed a racial reckoning in the United States that saw millions of people take to the streets to protest police brutality against people of color. In following months, law enforcement used massive amounts of "less-lethal" chemical weapons against protesters in cities across the country. Despite widespread use of chemical weapons by police agencies and mounting evidence of related environmental and health harms, the federal government does not regulate the use nor the manufacture of chemical weapons. Chemical weapons contain toxic ingredients such as hexavalent chromium, lead salts, and methylene chloride, which are …
The Long-Term Problem With Electric Vehicle Batteries: A Policy Recommendation To Encourage Advancement For Scalable Recycling Practices, Lauren Fricke
Seattle Journal of Technology, Environmental, & Innovation Law
With the growing popularity of electric vehicles, the demand for lithium ion (Li-ion) batteries, which are the dominant energy source for electric vehicles, are skyrocketing. By default, this means a growing demand for the raw materials needed to manufacture these complex batteries such as lithium, cobalt, and nickel. Economic, environmental, and political supply chain factors bring into question the sustainability of these batteries as a solution to the issues surrounding gasoline powered transportation, creating a need for large scale Li-ion battery recycling. By 2030, 140 million EVs are predicted to be on the road worldwide. In that time, eleven million …

Current treatments for substance use disorders (SUDs) are far from ideal, with no U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved pharmacotherapies to treat stimulant and other use disorders. New approaches are urgently needed to combat the increasing prevalence of SUDs and overdose deaths. It is widely accepted that addiction is a chronic disease of the brain involving changes in neural circuitry associated with cognitive and reward functioning. Brain stimulation techniques are novel methods that can modulate these circuits directly and thus hold considerable promise for treating SUDs.

Covid-19 Medication Scams, Cognitive Decline, & The Elderly, Mark S. Johnson, Mkay Bonner
Covid-19 Medication Scams, Cognitive Decline, & The Elderly, Mark S. Johnson, Mkay Bonner
Contemporary Southern Psychology
Around the world, the elderly population continues to increase in numbers and financial access. With this growth, the potential for this aging population to be victimized has increased as well. The COVID-19 pandemic has provided scammers and thieves with an unprecedented opportunity to take advantage of the weak and defenseless. Older individuals have more pre-existing health conditions which increases their vulnerability to COVID-19. Age-related conditions such as cognitive decline affect scam awareness, decision-making, fear, and insecurities. These vulnerabilities have placed the elderly population at a higher risk of being victimized through scams and deception. These criminal acts of deceit can …

Modern Law Enforcement Training Based On Four Classic Psychological Experiments, Mkay Bonner, Mark S. Johnson
Contemporary Southern Psychology
Psychology as a discipline is alive and well. Psychology is so much more than just therapy or research with rats. Psychological science is applied to real life in a myriad of ways every day. One excellent example is the use of four classic psychological experiments as a foundation for the Active Bystandership for Law Enforcement (ABLE) training curriculum. This contemporary police training program seeks to reduce harm and improve the national law enforcement culture. The four classic psychological science experiments that are used in this evidence-informed curriculum include Diffusion of Responsibility from Darley and Latane’, the Seminary Experiment from Darley …
Encounters Between The Elderly And Law Enforcement
Encounters Between The Elderly And Law Enforcement
Contemporary Southern Psychology
The elderly population is growing dramatically throughout the world. Out of this growth comes an increase in the number of encounters between the aged and law enforcement. These encounters occur because of a variety of factors including mental illnesses and addictions. Furthermore, older adults may be victims as evidenced in different forms of abuse such as physical, emotional, or financial abuse. Sadly, some documentation exists that older adults are committing more crimes. Multiple reasons have been postulated for these crimes including poverty, jealousy, and boredom. All of these different situations with the aged have created an increase in the number …

Crisis Deescalation: A Brief Review And Variations On A Model, Mkay Bonner, Mark S. Johnson
Contemporary Southern Psychology
The demand for changes in police responses to crises are loud and compelling. One such recommended change is from a Warrior mindset to a Guardian mindset. The emphasis in the Guardian philosophy is on law enforcement officers (LEOs) as protectors instead of fighters. This mindset emphasizes deescalation instead of the use of force whenever possible. Several deescalation courses existed but more have been created recently. This recent increase has been due, in part, to profiteers wanting to benefit from the change in philosophy and training. A brief history starting with the legend in deescalation, Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) Training, is …
Virtual Location Changes In Recall, Rick Stevens
Virtual Location Changes In Recall, Rick Stevens
Contemporary Southern Psychology
Wordlist recall was investigated comparing participants with rapidly changing local contextual cues to those with relatively stable cues. The word lists were presented on a standard computer screen. The level of cue change was manipulated using a multi-user virtual environment in which one group of participants moved through the series of stimuli while participants in the second condition remained in one location. Participants viewing words with changing contextual cues recalled more words than those whose words were presented with an unchanging background (Stationary (M = 7.57, SD = 3.18), Changing (M = 10.42, SD = 2.82), F(1,26)=6.33, p = .02). …

Nanotechnology offers new opportunities for the development of novel materials and strategies that improve technology and industry. This applies especially to agriculture, and our previous field studies have indicated that zinc oxide nanoparticles provide promising nano-fertilizer dispersion in sustainable agriculture. However, little is known about the precise ZnO-NP effects on legumes. Herein, 1 mg·L−1 ZnO-NP spray was dispersed on lentil plants to establish the direct NP effects on lentil production, seed nutritional quality, and stress response under field conditions. Although ZnO-NP exposure positively affected yield, thousand-seed weight and the number of pods per plant, there was no statistically significant …

Latinos Report Higher Rates Of Cognitive Impairment Than U.S.-Born Whites, But Rates Vary Between Latino Subgroups, Claire Pendergrast, Marc A. Garcia, Catherine Garcia
Population Health Research Brief Series
Cognitive impairment is a major public health issue that affects older adults’ quality of life and independence. Among older adults, U.S. Latinos have higher rates of cognitive impairment than U.S.-born Whites. This brief describes differences in the prevalence and age patterns of self-reported cognitive impairment between Latinos aged 60 and older living in the U.S. and U.S.-born non-Latino Whites, and within Latino subgroups (U.S.-born Mexicans, foreign-born Mexicans, island-born Puerto Ricans, and foreign-born Cubans). Findings show higher rates of cognitive impairment among U.S. Latinos than among non-Latino Whites, with especially high rates among island-born Puerto Ricans and both U.S.- and foreign-born …

Racial Discrimination In Life Insurance, William G. Gale, Kyle D. Logue, Nora Cahill, Rachel Gu, Swati Joshi
Law & Economics Working Papers
We examine the historical and statistical relationship between race and life insurance. Life insurance can play a central role in households’ financial security. Race has played an important and changing role in the provision of life insurance in the U.S. from slave insurance before the Civil War, to “Scientific Racism” continuing into the 20th century, to policies that do not explicitly mention race in recent decades. In empirical work using new data, we confirm earlier work showing that Black individuals have higher life insurance coverage rates than white individuals, controlling for observable characteristics. We find no difference in the likelihood …

Postsecondary Education Achievement And Employment Outcomes In Adults With Self-Reported Autism Diagnosis, So Yeon Park
Theses and Dissertations
More autistic adults are entering into the work force and enrolling in postsecondary schools. However, overall, autistic adults experience a more difficult time than neurotypical peers completing postsecondary education, obtaining employment, and maintaining employment. Less is known about outcomes for subgroups of autistic adults who have typical or elevated intellectual and verbal abilities. The present study looks at the significance of self-reported autistic traits, camouflaging, and mental health (anxiety, depression, intolerance of uncertainty) factors for predicting educational and employment outcomes in a sample of 148 adults with an autism diagnosis and no co-occurring intellectual disability. Of the total sample, 118 …

School Resource Centers (SRCs) are also known as School libraries serve as a catalyst that encourages students to read by providing high-quality information resources, both printed and non-printed. However, previous studies found that SRCs need to align their roles with 21st century learning, to cope with digital era and to help students to develop lifelong learning. Therefore, this paper aims to investigate the relationship between the roles of SRCs and student civilization in the education setting. This research applied the quantitative approach with online survey distributed using Google Form to collect data from respondents. The overall mean shows that …
