Despite expert consensus and evidence-based preventative strategies against drowning, limited formal study exists on translating recommendations into practical and effective interventions. This paper describes the design of an education-based drowning prevention intervention and reports results from a pilot evaluation of the program’s effect on self-reported water-safe behaviors, attitudes, self-efficacy, and knowledge. Parents and caregivers attending children’s swim lessons in July and August 2018 participated in a brief water-safety education program. A pre-post-test design evaluated "Theory of Planned Behavior" indicators to assess for changes. We found significant increases in scores related to water safety knowledge, attitudes on maintaining arms reach distance …

Graduate School of Social Work: Faculty Scholarship
Transgender and nonbinary (TNB) individuals face disparities in nearly every aspect of health. One factor associated with poor health outcomes in other marginalized populations is health literacy, yet no identified studies examine health literacy in TNB samples. Moreover, most health literacy frameworks focus primarily on the capacities of individual patients to understand and use healthcare information, with little attention given to provider literacy and environmental factors. In partnership with a statewide LGBTQ advocacy organization, we recruited 46 transgender and nonbinary individuals to participate in seven focus groups conducted in urban, suburban, and rural locations throughout Colorado. TNB participants consistently engaged …
Drivers And Distribution Of Solar Pv In New York State, Jessica Stretton
Drivers And Distribution Of Solar Pv In New York State, Jessica Stretton
Theses and Dissertations
This paper investigates the drivers and distribution of solar photovoltaic (PV) installations in New York State using statistical analysis and GIS. Rooftop residential solar projects were found across the state but were most heavily concentrated around the cities of New York, Schenectady and Ithaca. Larger scale, ground-mounted projects were located upstate and the less densely populated areas of the Lower Hudson Valley. Although there were more projects and kW generation downstate, individual solar PV installations were more likely to be larger in size upstate.

Social Needs Resource Connections: A Systematic Review Of Barriers, Facilitators, And Evaluation, Katherine Dubose Broadwell, Dawn Michele Richardson, Christina M. Nicolaidis
School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations
Healthcare organizations increasingly are screening patients for social needs (e.g., food, housing) and referring them to community resources. This systematic mixed studies review assesses how studies evaluate social needs resource connections and identifies patient- and caregiver-reported factors that may inhibit or facilitate resource connections.
Predictors Of Positive Parenting: Mexican And Puerto Rican Mothers Vulnerable To Child Welfare Involvement, Jessica Rodriguez-Jenkins, Mathew C. Uretsky
Predictors Of Positive Parenting: Mexican And Puerto Rican Mothers Vulnerable To Child Welfare Involvement, Jessica Rodriguez-Jenkins, Mathew C. Uretsky
School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations
For young children, positive parenting is predictive of their prosocial development and positive emotional well-being. Understanding the factors that promote or undermine positive parenting is of particular importance for families at risk of child welfare involvement. For Latinx families, conceptualizations of risk are better viewed through a cultural lens. This paper explores predictors of positive parenting among Latinx families (Mexican and Puerto Rican) who are vulnerable to child welfare involvement. Weighted data were drawn from Wave 1 of the National Survey on Child and Adolescent Well-being II—Restricted Release (NSCAW-II), a national sample that approximated a probability sample of child welfare …

The burden of chronic noncommunicable diseases in rural South Africa is exacerbated by delayed health-seeking. This study explored awareness, beliefs and health-seeking behaviour relating to diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular diseases in Ingwavuma, a poor rural community in the uMkhanyakude district of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Eight gender and age-stratified Focus Group Discussions (FGD) were conducted in isiZulu using a pre-tested FGD guide with seventy-six participants. Thematic analysis was done to discern views on access to care for noncommunicable diseases. Findings revealed limited awareness of hypertension, diabetes, and cardiovascular-related disease burden. The community practices medical plurality, and consultation with traditional healers …

The Early Sport And Play Experiences Of Elite New Zealand Hockey Players From Rural And Regional Communities: A Qualitative Descriptive Study, Robert J. Newport, Simon R. Walters, Sarah-Kate Millar, Geoff Dickson, Andrew Lenton
The Qualitative Report
The foundation of an athlete’s development is formed through their early developmental experiences. Thus, in this study we explored the early sport and play experiences of elite New Zealand hockey players from rural and regional communities. In our examination of how smaller communities contribute to the development of New Zealand’s top athletes, this research has a particular focus on the athletes’ early sport and play experiences and the influence of people around them during their growth and development. In this qualitative descriptive study, we employed semi-structured interviews to gather data from eight current and former elite New Zealand hockey players. …

Developmental Functioning Of Infants And Toddlers With Neurodevelopmental Disorders, Megan Callahan
Developmental Functioning Of Infants And Toddlers With Neurodevelopmental Disorders, Megan Callahan
LSU Master's Theses
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD), epilepsy, and cerebral palsy (CP) are some of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders among children with prevalence rates of 1.85% (Maenner et al., 2020), 1.2% (Zack & Kobau, 2017), and between 0.21 and 0.31% (Christensen et al., 2013), respectively. These neurodevelopmental disorders are highly comorbid with each other and with other disorders, such as intellectual disability (ID). While previous research has investigated developmental functioning in these neurodevelopmental disorders, it has primarily focused on only two at a time and in older children or adults. The current study aimed to investigate developmental functioning in these neurodevelopmental disorders …

Information Institution Services In Indonesia During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Dyah Puspitasari Srirahayu, Esti Putri Anugrah, Muhammad Rifky Nurpratama
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The COVID-19 pandemic affects all community activities from offices to institutions, including libraries in Indonesia. The Indonesian government eventually implemented 'work from home' and 'study from home' policies so as to make institutions such as libraries undergo adjustments, where librarians work at home and visitors are prohibited from leaving the house. Students are also mandated to study at home, causing them unable to visit the library. Because of this policy and pandemic conditions, libraries in Indonesia have begun to adjust their services and make the latest service policies to facilitate their users. Therefore, this research aims to examine what new …
Not So Different As Cats And Dogs: Companionship During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Shelly Volsche, Elizabeth Johnson
Not So Different As Cats And Dogs: Companionship During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Shelly Volsche, Elizabeth Johnson
People and Animals: The International Journal of Research and Practice
COVID- 19 lockdown provided a unique, in situ opportunity to probe caretaker experiences of living with companion animals during a stressful event. We launched an online survey in the United States that included standard demographic questions, questions related to household structures, and 25 Likert scale questions that probed perceptions of whether and how respondents’ relationships changed during social isolation. This paper uses a subset of that data specific to dog and cat guardians. A principal components analysis and Mann-Whitney U test returned no significant differences between cat and dog guardians on three scales (Scale 1: Psychological Well-being, Scale 2: …

The Impact Of New Light Rail Service On Employment Growth In Portland, Oregon, Lahar Santra
The Impact Of New Light Rail Service On Employment Growth In Portland, Oregon, Lahar Santra
Dissertations and Theses
This study quantitatively examines the impact of the new Light Rail Transit (LRT) service on employment growth in retail, knowledge, and service sectors before and after opening the LRT. At the corridor level, this study conducts a case study of Greenline in Southeast Portland, Oregon. The results of the corridor level study suggest that the new LRT service increased employment along the Greenline corridor among all the three sectors of interest- retail, knowledge, service in the long-term (ten years) while having slightly different results for the short-term (five years), likely due to the slow growth of LRT benefits. This study …

Negotiating With Terrorists: An Interdisciplinary Analysis Of Khasavyurt Agreement And Good Friday Agreement, Nataliya Shull
Theses and Dissertations
This study examines the nature of negotiations of two different conflicts: the First Chechen War, and The Northern Ireland Conflict. I identify a set of decisive variables and their role in the conflict and post-conflict environments that affected the sustainability of the peace agreements. I also argue there is a relation between these decisive variables and identified themes of the agreements. A thematic analysis of the agreements' texts adds another dimension to the meaning within the original text and to the determinants of a comprehensive agreement. The findings suggest that while some of these variables proved to be decisive, the …
Consciousness Explained Or Described?, Aaron Schurger, Michael S. A. Graziano
Consciousness Explained Or Described?, Aaron Schurger, Michael S. A. Graziano
Psychology Faculty Articles and Research
Consciousness is an unusual phenomenon to study scientifically. It is defined as a subjective, first-person phenomenon, and science is an objective, third-person endeavor. This misalignment between the means—science—and the end—explaining consciousness—gave rise to what has become a productive workaround: the search for ‘neural correlates of consciousness’ (NCCs). Science can sidestep trying to explain consciousness and instead focus on characterizing the kind(s) of neural activity that are reliably correlated with consciousness. However, while we have learned a lot about consciousness in the bargain, the NCC approach was not originally intended as the foundation for a true explanation of consciousness. Indeed, it …

Dissecting Public Expenditure : Part – Ii, Ishrat Husain Dr.
Faculty Research - Newspaper and Magazine Articles
Debt dynamics requires continued primary budget surpluses to be generated for gradually lowering the burden of interest payments and reducing public debt-GDP ratio. Revenue mobilisation of an additional 1.5 percent of GDP annually from those outside the tax net (divided evenly between the provinces and the federal government) insulating the lower-middle and poor classes appears a plausible means to achieve these surpluses. The pension bill is growing much faster than any other expenditure head and a switch has to be made from the present defined benefits to the defined contribution system. The results from tax and pension reform would appear …
Psu Student Research From The Trb 2022 Annual Meeting: Drone Facility Location Considering Coverage Reliability: Application To Emergency Medical Scenarios, Darshan Chauhan
PSU Transportation Seminars
Public service agencies like hospitals, fire, rescue, and police departments are required to maintain a high level of service. These service standards often come as reliability constraints. For example, fire-related incidents require a 90% response rate in 4 minutes. We consider a case study of tackling out-of-hospital cardiac events using AED-enabled drones in Portland, OR. Environmental factors, majorly wind speed and direction, significantly impact drone performance. We formulate the drone location problem as a robust multi-period maximum coverage facility location problem. We model the coverage reliability constraint as a chance constraint on failure probabilities. For our context, multiple periods translate …
Psu Student Research From The Trb 2022 Annual Meeting: Effect Of Covid-19 On Property Value Premium Of Light Rail Transit, Sangwan Lee
PSU Transportation Seminars
The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted health and transformed many aspects of our lives, such as travel behavior and residential location preference. For instance, since the outbreak, there was a sharp decline in the ridership of public transportation. Moreover, since the pandemic, a shifting preference toward suburban and exurban areas from denser urban areas like Central Business Districts has been reported. Accordingly, a question arises whether the plummeted transit ridership, alongside the anecdotal and empirical evidence that some households prefer to disperse away from the cities, could combine to transform the long-standing housing price mechanism related to transit proximity. Thus, we …

Kentucky newspapers are a major asset for historical research and genealogical work. They hold the treasures not found in any other resource and are a great educational tool for all ages. We will share with the audience how the Kentucky Digital Newspaper Program (KDNP) came to exist in its present form, who uses it, and why it is free to all who have internet service. Added to that, will be the overview of why so much local African American history can be found in the newspapers, and how the newspapers have been a vital resource in the development of the …
