Truckers in the United States (U.S.) and Canada are at high risk for noncommunicable disease. Although trucking built environments have been highlighted for intervention, no systematic review has assessed aspects of trucking environments that may influence food, physical activity (PA), and smoking patterns/practices. The purpose of this systematic review was to characterize the state of the science on trucking food, PA, and tobacco environments and to examine truckers’ food, PA, and tobacco patterns/practices. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines were used. Five databases were selected for searching in April 2020 and 2021 using key terms constructed …

Jurnal Geografi Lingkungan Tropik (Journal of Geography of Tropical Environments)
Fire incident has a great impact on the loss of lives and financial loss due to property damage. Areas with high population density, densely physical building conditions, and irregular building patterns commonly form congested residential slum areas are vulnerable to fire hazards. The capital city of Jakarta is the most populous city in Indonesia and the most densely populated city, with an average of 15,900 people per sq km. In 2019, there was 2,109 fire incident recorded, and nearly 20% of them occurred within the West Jakarta Municipality area. This study investigates the relationship of population density and building density, …
What Are The Conditions For Generating Positive Impacts On The Livelihood Of Pes Participants In Implementing The Pes Scheme? A Comparison Between Pes For Watersheds In Indonesia And Tanzania, Fathia Hashilah, Septian Agung Waluyo
What Are The Conditions For Generating Positive Impacts On The Livelihood Of Pes Participants In Implementing The Pes Scheme? A Comparison Between Pes For Watersheds In Indonesia And Tanzania, Fathia Hashilah, Septian Agung Waluyo
Jurnal Geografi Lingkungan Tropik (Journal of Geography of Tropical Environments)
Many scholars perceive that Payment for Environmental Services (PES) will automatically benefit environmental conditions and the livelihood of the environmental services (ES) providers. Some contextual conditions might create a positive impact on the livelihood of ES providers. This paper aims to obtain the contextual needs of PES implementation that positively affect the livelihood of ES providers. Comparing two studies of the PES scheme in Indonesia and Tanzania, there are four general conditions for achieving benefits for ES providers from implementing PES. First, the PES scheme should be well-designed. Second, potential PES participants need to have a solid institutional condition. Third, …

Doing More With Less: Racial Diversity In Nonprofit Leadership And Organizational Resilience, Steven W. Mumford
Doing More With Less: Racial Diversity In Nonprofit Leadership And Organizational Resilience, Steven W. Mumford
Political Science Faculty Publications
Racial diversity in nonprofit leadership presents a variety of benefits crucial for responding to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, leadership remains predominately white. Practitioner-oriented studies decry racial disparities in nonprofit funding, but academic literature offers mixed conclusions on how diversity influences resource acquisition. This article examines associations between racial composition of nonprofit leadership and organizational resilience to the pandemic, based on a survey of New Orleans-based nonprofits in winter 2021. Logistic regressions assess whether leadership diversity increases the likelihood of organizational resilience in both service delivery and financial health, finding that greater board diversity is associated with targeted programming and advocacy …

Getting Gideon Right: Eligibility For Appointed Counsel In Texas Misdemeanor Cases, Andrew L.B. Davies, Blane Skiles, Pamela R. Metzger, Janelle Gursoy, Alex Romo
Deason Center Reports
In Gideon v. Wainwright, the U.S. Supreme Court held that the government must provide a criminal defense lawyer for any accused person who cannot afford one. But for too many people, Gideon's promise remains unfulfilled. In Texas, there are no statewide guidelines about who is entitled to a court-appointed lawyer. Instead, counties create their own rules that create serious gaps in constitutional protection. Getting Gideon Right investigates the financial standards that determine an accused person's eligibility for appointed counsel in Texas county courts. The report reveals a patchwork of county court policies that are both complex and severe.

Modernizing The Birds And The Bees: New Standards For Sexual Education, Ashley Whetten, Katie Whitehead
Modernizing The Birds And The Bees: New Standards For Sexual Education, Ashley Whetten, Katie Whitehead
Brigham Young University Prelaw Review
Conversations surrounding sexual education usually revolve around comprehensive sexual education curricula and abstinence-only until marriage curricula. These conversations and the federal funding budgets that developed from these programs prevent innovation and modernization of sexual education programs. Furthermore, research has demonstrated major flaws in both curricula. This paper does not argue for one approach to sexual education over another; instead, the proposals in this paper aim to bridge long-standing disputes on sexual education by creating a new standard of sexual education that also addresses the major downfalls of both current curricula. In order to qualify for funding the program would require …
How Social Media’S Rhetoric Shapes The Social Identity Of Online Groups: Forming, Confirming And Reinforcing And The Algorithmic Role, Crystal Rose
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
The world has become integrated with technology at a rapid rate. The rhetoric of online platforms, due to technology integration, allows people to connect, converse, and meet others who have common character traits. Eyman (2015) defines rhetoric as an action that intends to persuade and form meaning. These platforms are referred to as "social media," which are online networks made by people who use rhetoric to form, confirm, and reinforce the connections of platform users with common character traits: Hobbies, thoughts, race, gender, or religion. These common character traits make up one's social identity. This study details the findings of …

Three Essays In Applied Microeconomics, Ding Liu
Three Essays In Applied Microeconomics, Ding Liu
Economics Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation is consist of three empirical studies in microeconomics. The first part explores how monopsony power affects the impact of robot adoption on US labor markets. Theoretically, I show that robots have stronger effects (either positive or negative) on employment and wages in a perfectly competitive labor market than a perfectly monopsonistic labor market. Moreover, the sign of the effects depends on whether robots and labor are substitutes or complements. The empirical results are consistent with the theory. The employment and wage effects diminish as labor market monopsony power grows and they become statistically insignificant in near-monopsonistic labor markets. …
The Curvilinear Relationship Between Political Terror And Internal Armed Conflict, Lilian A. Morrell
The Curvilinear Relationship Between Political Terror And Internal Armed Conflict, Lilian A. Morrell
Student Publications
I examine the relationship between political terror and the annual incidence of internal armed conflict. Studies have found that other factors associated with violence have a curvilinear relationship to internal conflict, including regime type, GDP, and ethnic fractionalization. I seek to find if political terror has a significant impact on instances of conflict and, more particularly, whether a curvilinear relationship exists between these two variables. I hypothesize that the relationship will be significant and in the shape of an inverse U. If a country uses no political terror, or extensive political terror, then the number of internal armed conflicts will …
Social Security Benefits Continue To Fall Short Of Covering Cost Of Basic Needs For Older Americans, 2021, Jan Mutchler, Nidya Velasco Roldán
Social Security Benefits Continue To Fall Short Of Covering Cost Of Basic Needs For Older Americans, 2021, Jan Mutchler, Nidya Velasco Roldán
Center for Social and Demographic Research on Aging Publications
Social Security benefits fall short of what is required to cover the basic cost of living across the United States, according to new estimates based on the Elder Index, a county-by-county measure of the income older adults need to secure an independent lifestyle. Nationally, the average Social Security benefit covers just 68% of basic living expenses of housing, food, transportation, and health care for a single renter in 2021, and 81% for an older couple. The gap between Social Security benefits and what it takes to get by is especially problematic for older adults who rely largely or entirely on …
Strategic Concealment: Locating Armed Private Contractors In State Foreign Policy, Jared A. Michaels
Strategic Concealment: Locating Armed Private Contractors In State Foreign Policy, Jared A. Michaels
Student Publications
The global expansion of armed private contractors has led to a revived interest in researching armed private contracting firms, especially investigating how their personnel have functioned as an extension of state foreign policy. However, the literature on the industry contains a confusing diversity of terms when reviewing such firms, whether private military company, private security company, private military security company, or even just mercenary. Using the Singer (2010) ‘tip of the spear’ typology, I analyze the distinctions across armed private contracting firms and discuss the differences between armed private contractors and conventional militaries, armed private contractors and mercenaries, and highlight …

Indigenous Pennsylvania: Past, Present, And Future, Sarah E. Gilsoul
Student Publications
Gettysburg College recently adopted an official Land Acknowledgment Statement. However, there is little publicly accessible media that helps students, or the greater Gettysburg community, understand Indigenous presence in our region. This project, Indigenous Pennsylvania: Past, Present, and Future seeks to address the primary question, “How can we represent Indigenous presence within our region to be informative and inclusive of Indigenous worldviews and perspectives?” The study tackles two sub-questions: a) what are the best digital tools to generate a virtual and informative interactive map that can represent Indigenous senses of space, time, and land relations? and b) what aspects of Indigenous …
Policy Strategies To Solve The U.S. Recycling Crisis, Flavia M. Scotto D'Antuono
Policy Strategies To Solve The U.S. Recycling Crisis, Flavia M. Scotto D'Antuono
Student Publications
Following China’s Operation National Sword in 2018, the politics and economics of recycling have increasingly come under scrutiny as many examine whether it remains a worthwhile endeavor. Differences across municipalities, changing prices of goods, contamination, mislabeling, and involvement by the plastics industry has further confused the issue. This paper examines to what extent a national recycling policy would be effective and what form it may take using several case studies - whether it be mandatory recycled content minimums, extended producer responsibility, or allowing the industry to phase out completely,
The Impact Of Women And Intersectionality On Bill Success In State Legislatures, Maggie Lowrey
The Impact Of Women And Intersectionality On Bill Success In State Legislatures, Maggie Lowrey
Political Science Theses and Capstones
Thousands of bills are introduced in state legislatures every year and there are a multitude of reasons as to why some of those bills become law and some do not. Female sponsorship and the intersectionality of female sponsors are the focus of my research. Previous research has found variable impact of these characteristics; however, little work has been done on the combined effects of race, gender, and partisanship on bill passage rate. I tested these ideas on bills that were introduced to state legislatures of forty states in 2015 from the Harvard Dataverse1. By applying differing factors of …

Non-Profits And Living Wages, Jack Buckley
Non-Profits And Living Wages, Jack Buckley
School of Professional and Continuing Studies Nonprofit Studies Capstone Projects
Non-Profit organizations must find ways to divide their budgets between staff wages and program services, as well as paying their staff a living wage. Unlike for-profits who can increase prices for consumers when they need to increase staff wages, non-profits do not have this luxury. The goal of this project was to collect data on how non-profits manage their budgets and if they provide staff with living wages. A survey was sent out with a total of eight responses, giving a breakdown of various non-profit’s budgets and if they pay a living wage. Overall, seven out of eight non-profits pay …
