Legends Of Sport: Mildred "Babe" Didrikson Zaharias, Murphy Francis Mcintyre

2020 Symposium Posters

This is a poster project I completed for my Sport and Culture class here at Eastern Washington University. Before starting this assignment, I had never heard the name Babe Didrikson. After finishing the project, I can tell you that Babe Didrikson is one of the greatest athletes of all time. This poster goes over most of her major accomplishments, a little bit about her early life, and it dives into the cultural significance of Babe's life work. She was one of the fiercest competitors to have ever lived. Babe was a pioneer for women's sports and her dominance still echoes …

Metaphors Matter: Top-Down Effects On Anthropomorphism, Hailey Austine Scherer May 2020

Metaphors Matter: Top-Down Effects On Anthropomorphism, Hailey Austine Scherer

Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses

Anthropomorphism, or the attribution of human mental states and characteristics to non-human entities, has been widely demonstrated to be cued automatically by certain bottom-up appearance and behavioral features in machines. In this thesis, I argue that the potential for top-down effects to influence anthropomorphism has so far been underexplored. I motivate and then report the results of a new empirical study suggesting that top-down linguistic cues, including anthropomorphic metaphors, personal pronouns, and other grammatical constructions, increase anthropomorphism of a robot. As robots and other machines become more integrated into human society and our daily lives, more thorough understanding of the …

Nebraska Monthly Economic Indicators: May 28, 2020, Eric Thompson

Leading Economic Indicator Reports

The LEI-N fell by 5.57% during April of 2020 as the COVID-19 Pandemic continued to impact Nebraska’s economy. The decline in April followed a large decline in March. Taken together, the two monthly drops suggest that the Nebraska economy will be smaller in the fall of 2020 than it was during January and February of this year. All components of the leading indicator worsened during April. There were few airline passenger enplanements during April. In addition, both building permits for single-family homes and manufacturing hours-worked declined while initial claims for unemployment insurance rose. There also was another increase in the …

Reviewing Family Communication Scholarship: Toward A Framework For Conceptualizing A Communicative Perspective On Family Identity, Kaitlin E. Phillips, Jordan Soliz

Languages, Philosophy, and Communication Studies Faculty Publications

In this manuscript we review multiple approaches to family communication research, and provide directions for future research as they relate to family culture. Specifically, we review family communication research that is either explicitly or implicitly tied to family culture. Given the importance of families and understanding the first social group that individuals often belong to, it is necessary to synthesize programs of research related to family culture. Thus, in order to further the progression of family research we provide an overview of where current research on family communication converges, present additional factors for family scholars to include in their work, …

The United States Congress and the President have approved multiple phases of COVID-19 assistance to date including the $2.3 trillion CARES (Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security) Act passed in March that provides financial support for agricultural producers as a small part of the overall relief.

While agricultural producers and agribusinesses are eligible for two programs administered through the Small Business Administration, including the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) and Economic Injury Disaster Loans (EIDLs), the primary support for agriculture is coming from USDA through the Coronavirus Food Assistance Program (CFAP). The CARES Act provided $9.5 billion directly to the Secretary …

Changing The Culture Of Opioid-Related Messaging In Florida: A Formative Research Approach, Laura Boutemen, Lindsay Neuberger, Chad Collins, Chandler Dobiyanski, Bethany Richardson, Emily Knapp

Florida Public Health Review

Though expanding in negative impact for decades, the opioid epidemic, including heroin use, has reached public health emergency status in the United States. Heroin is not used only by the most intense drug users, but becoming more common place (Hirschfeld Davis, 2017). It is essential to better understand how young adults perceive heroin prevention, intervention, and treatment so the most effective campaign messages can be constructed to assist them. This paper presents data from four focus groups (N=24) in Orlando, Florida to better gauge young adult knowledge regarding heroin and obtain specific recommendations to successfully inform future messaging. Results suggest …

The Heterogeneous Labor Market Impacts Of The Covid-19 Pandemic, Guido Matias Cortes, Eliza C. Forsythe May 2020

The Heterogeneous Labor Market Impacts Of The Covid-19 Pandemic, Guido Matias Cortes, Eliza C. Forsythe

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

We study the distributional consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic’s impacts on employment. Using CPS data on stocks and flows, we show that the pandemic has exacerbated pre-existing inequalities. Although employment losses have been widespread, they have been substantially larger in lower-paying occupations and industries. Individuals from disadvantaged groups, such as Hispanics, younger workers, those with lower levels of education, and women, have suffered both larger increases in job losses and larger decreases in hiring rates. Occupational and industry affiliation can explain only part of the increased job losses among these groups.

Developing Norms For A Behavioral Profile Of Fasd For A Mexican-American Population, Ana Colunga-Marin

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Culturally relevant research has not kept pace with the most rapidly growing ethnic population in the United States. The Pacific Northwest consists of 1 million Mexican and Mexican Americans (López, 2015). Statistically, Latinos are considered one of the populations that is most often overrepresented within the lower socioeconomic status level. In addition, factors such as lack of resources, language barriers, and educational constraints play key obstacles to accessing medical treatment and mental health services in general and especially for specific groups such as those with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS; Lopez, 2015). Research has indicated high financial, emotional, and psychological expenses …

Assisting Children With Velocardiofacial Syndrome Who Have Developmental Disabilities And Delays Associated With Speech, Communication, And Education, Mckenzie K. Holty May 2020

Assisting Children With Velocardiofacial Syndrome Who Have Developmental Disabilities And Delays Associated With Speech, Communication, And Education, Mckenzie K. Holty

Honors Thesis

Children with velocardiofacial syndrome (VCFS) have a variety of complex needs. Research shows that VCFS is characterized by a combination of medical problems, developmental delays, and learning disabilities, which vary from child to child. This syndrome also puts adolescents at a higher risk for developing psychiatric and psychotic disorders. The complexity of symptoms that can arise from VCFS can influence the ability of these children to communicate, socialize, and learn effectively. This literature review aims to discuss literature for caregivers, educators, and physicians to aid children effectively and understand their challenges relating to speech, communication, and education. This topic is …

The Influence Of Prison Sentence Length On The Societal Dehumanization Of Ex-Offenders, Skye Jensen May 2020

The Influence Of Prison Sentence Length On The Societal Dehumanization Of Ex-Offenders, Skye Jensen

Student Theses

The current study examined the factors that influence the societal dehumanization of offenders, belief in offender redeemability, and support for resource allocation and offender re- enfranchisement. Specifically, the study investigated how prison sentence length influences public opinion on these measures. Two hundred and twenty-two individuals participated in this study and were randomly assigned to one of two conditions involving their responses to a vignette depicting an offender having served either five or 15 years. The results revealed that the length of the offender’s prison sentence did not impact participants’ dehumanization of offenders, belief in their redeemability, or support for reentry …

Total Factor Productivity And Idiosyncratic Volatility Trends, Hussein Abdoh, Yu Liu May 2020

Total Factor Productivity And Idiosyncratic Volatility Trends, Hussein Abdoh, Yu Liu

School of Economics and Finance Faculty Publications

Firms’ idiosyncratic stock return volatility has become more volatile in the US since the 1960s. This paper investigates why individual stocks became more volatile over the 1964–2013 period using firm-level total factor productivity (TFP). On average, the volatility of idiosyncratic TFP growth rate has increased, being associated with higher idiosyncratic return volatility. The connection between TFP growth and economic profits provides an explanation for the increase in the idiosyncratic volatility of fundamental cash flows. The results are robust when using timeseries and panel regressions and controlling for cash flow and earnings variability, size, book-to-market, leverage, profitability, age, dividend yield, and …

Help-Seeking Behaviors In Asian American Adolescents And College Students, Janelle Wee, Jingyan Gu, Keyne Law May 2020

Help-Seeking Behaviors In Asian American Adolescents And College Students, Janelle Wee, Jingyan Gu, Keyne Law

School of Psychology, Family, and Community Research Conference

The aim of this review is to examine Asian American (ASA) adolescents’ and college students’ help-seeking behaviors, to understand specific barriers to mental health service utilization. Despite a decreased likelihood of seeking treatment (SAMHSA, 2014), even those who sought treatment reported a greater severity of symptoms compared to their White counterparts (U.S. DHHS, 2001). ASA adolescents were less inclined to use school-based mental health services (SBMHS) compared to their peers (Wang et al., 2018), with parents reporting several barriers to utilizing SBMHS. ASA college students with a greater sense of ethnic identity also avoided seeking help (Tummala-Narra et al., 2018).

Knee Jerk Satisfaction: Displaying Satisfaction As An Outcome Of Interest, Charlene Hack, Hunter Bronkema May 2020

Knee Jerk Satisfaction: Displaying Satisfaction As An Outcome Of Interest, Charlene Hack, Hunter Bronkema

School of Psychology, Family, and Community Research Conference

Satisfaction among applied psychological literature has been often viewed as a correlate to constructs of interest in the same field (Mathieu & Zajac, 1990; Shuck, Adelson & Reio, 2017). While literature exists in promotion of employee job satisfaction, satisfaction is often tied to the ultimate fiscal criterion or productivity of an organization. Employee job satisfaction can be catalytic in an individual’s personal, professional, and their organizational goals. This paper seeks to explore job satisfaction as an outcome variable of workplace civility. Additionally, both employee engagement and organizational commitment will be assessed as potential mediators for the relationship between workplace civility …

Risk Sensitivity Among Species: A Meta-Analysis, Paxton Ataide, Emily Northey, Alyssa Peters, Jessica Sparks-Stuht, Baine Craft

School of Psychology, Family, and Community Research Conference

We are conducting an ongoing study within risk-sensitive foraging behavior, examining the parameters of approximately 109 research studies. Data has been collected pertaining to body size (g), basal metabolic rate (W), the basal metabolic rate per mass (W/g), the lifespan in years of the species, the sexual maturity of females in the species (days), and the home range size (meters). The species vary among the studies analyzed and include the taxonomy classes of birds, mammals, fish, and insects. Moreover, the purpose of collecting this data is to further analyze the findings within each study, specifically on how it pertains to …
