The Experience Of Female Caregivers In The Kingdom Of Saudi Arabia, Nouf Albugami Jul 2020

The Experience Of Female Caregivers In The Kingdom Of Saudi Arabia, Nouf Albugami

Dissertations and Theses

In the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia ("KSA"), a minimal amount of research concerning the availability and level of social support specifically targeting the female caregiver has been conducted. Moreover, the extent to which social support has helped alleviate both the physical and psychological stress of caregiving has been studied very little, if at all. In light of this limited amount of research, the goals of this study are to investigate the following two questions: (1) What is the experience of female caregivers with chronically ill children in KSA, and (2) What is the nature and availability of social support among …

Assessing Textbook Costs At A Small College, Stephen G. Krueger, Lewis Ward Jul 2020

Assessing Textbook Costs At A Small College, Stephen G. Krueger, Lewis Ward

Dartmouth Library Staff Publications

In recent years, the cost of textbooks has risen drastically, making it an important issue for everyone involved in higher education. Accurate and specific information on the cost of textbooks is needed to effectively address the situation. Over the summer of 2018, a librarian and an undergraduate student at a small liberal arts college assessed the textbook costs at their institution, using methodology developed by community colleges doing similar research. Based on course catalogs, bookstore records, and other resources, they calculated the costs for students in different disciplines over four years of study. These costs were impacted by major, courses …

Are Responses To The Pandemic Inclusive? A Rapid Virtual Audit Of Covid-19 Press Briefings In Lmics, Jaclyn Yap, Vandana Chaudhry, Chandan Kumar Jha, Subha Mani, Sophie Mitra

Publications and Research

Responses to the COVID-19 pandemic may leave many people behind through a variety of exclusion processes as basic information about the virus and its spread is shared with the public. We conduct a rapid virtual audit of pandemic related press briefings and press conferences issued by governments and international organizations in order to assess if responses have been inclusive to the hearing-impaired communities in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). We analyze COVID-19 press conferences and press briefings issued during Feb–May 2020, for over 123 LMICs and for international organizations (e.g. the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, the World Health …

Estimating A Fair Value For Standing Forage, Jay Parsons, Daren Redfearn, Mary E. Drewnoski Jul 2020

Estimating A Fair Value For Standing Forage, Jay Parsons, Daren Redfearn, Mary E. Drewnoski

Cornhusker Economics

Several things need to be considered when deciding what value to place on standing forage. Forage prices reflect current inventories, demand, expected current season production and associated yield risk, and quality characteristics. Standing forage can be harvested in a number of different ways which need to be considered when pricing it. Below, we provide a few general thoughts and questions concerning harvesting method and comparable feed value to consider when pricing standing forage. We follow with a few examples illustrating pricing calculations for forage mechanically harvested as hay, haylage, and silage. We close with pricing considerations for forage harvested by …

Covid-19: Metro Recovery Index In The Mountain West, Vanessa Booth, Katie M. Gilbertson, Elia Del Carmen Solano-Patricio, Caitlin J. Saladino, William E. Brown Jr.

Economic Development & Workforce

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic and the economic recession that is developing as a result, researchers at the Brookings Institution created the “Metro Recovery Index dashboard,” an interactive data set that tracks changes in labor, real estate, and other economic indicators for metropolitan areas throughout the U.S. Using data from January – June 2020, this Fact Sheets highlights the impact of the COVID-19 recession on 13 Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs) in 5 Mountain West states: Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, and Utah.

A Fmri Of Fear Conditioning And Auditory Looming In Autism Spectrum Disorder, David Nicholas Top Jr. Jul 2020

A Fmri Of Fear Conditioning And Auditory Looming In Autism Spectrum Disorder, David Nicholas Top Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

Many autistic adults experience debilitating anxiety that interferes with their daily functioning. Atypical sensory processing and intolerance of uncertainty are cognitive processes linked to atypical limbic system functioning and impaired fear conditioning as potential mediators of anxiety in autism. A previous fear conditioning study using fMRI found atypical amygdala functioning in autism when the threat stimulus was only partially reinforced. The first aim of this dissertation is a multimethod examination of brain and psychophysiological response in autistic and in neurotypical adults during a fear conditioning/extinction task with the threat stimulus reinforced 100% percent of the time. We were also interested …

Structurally Vulnerable Neighbourhood Environments And Racial/Ethnic Covid-19 Inequities, Rachel L. Berkowitz, Xing Gao, Eli K. Michaels, Mahasin S. Mujahid Jul 2020

Structurally Vulnerable Neighbourhood Environments And Racial/Ethnic Covid-19 Inequities, Rachel L. Berkowitz, Xing Gao, Eli K. Michaels, Mahasin S. Mujahid

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Preliminary evidence indicates that the experience of the novel coronavirus is not shared equally across geographic areas. Findings in the United States suggest that the burden of COVID-19 morbidity and mortality may be hardest felt in disadvantaged and racially segregated places. Deprived neighbourhoods are disproportionately populated by people of colour, the same populations that are becoming sicker and dying more often from COVID-19. This commentary examines how structurally vulnerable neighbourhoods contribute to racial/ethnic inequities in SARS-COV-2 exposure and COVID-19 morbidity and mortality and considers opportunities to intervene through place-based initiatives and the implementation of a Health in All Policies strategy.

Effects Of Minimum Wage Increase On Employment In Small And Medium-Sized Enterprises In Korea, Hyunah Kim Jul 2020

Effects Of Minimum Wage Increase On Employment In Small And Medium-Sized Enterprises In Korea, Hyunah Kim

Undergraduate Economic Review

In Korea, where SMEs dominantly provide most of the jobs in labor market, how SMEs respond to an increase in the minimum wage in terms of employment can be a critical factor of job provision in Korean labor market. This paper mainly examines the effect of the minimum wage increase on employment in SMEs in Korea by using a difference-in-differences methodology, and finds that raising the minimum wage has on average significantly reduced total employment in all sizes of SMEs relative to large enterprises. The finding in this paper suggests that raising the minimum wage rate may incur loss of …

Even Order Ranked Set Sampling With Auxiliary Variable, Muhammad Tayyab, Muhammad Noor Ul-Amin, Muhammad Hanif Jul 2020

Even Order Ranked Set Sampling With Auxiliary Variable, Muhammad Tayyab, Muhammad Noor Ul-Amin, Muhammad Hanif

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Even order ranked set sampling (EORSS) is a novel proposed ranked set sampling scheme connected with an auxiliary variable correlated with the study variable. This scheme quantifies only the one sampling unit which is at even position from each ranking set by employing specific criteria. The performance of the ratio estimator under EORSS is compared to its contemporary estimators in simple random sampling (SRS), ranked set sampling (RSS), median ranked set sampling (MRSS) and quartile ranked set sampling (QRSS) exploiting the same number of quantified units. The simulation results proved that EORSS is an efficient alternative sampling scheme for ratio …

Under Discussion: Free Speech, Cancel Culture, And Compassion, Rachel Robinson-Greene

Languages, Philosophy, and Communication Studies Faculty Publications

In July, 2020, Harper’s Magazine published a letter signed by 153 prominent authors and thinkers. Signatories included figures such as Noam Chomsky, Gloria Steinem, and J.K. Rowling. Their main contention was that an “illiberal left” has emerged in recent political discourse — a left that allows no room for divergent points of view and that deals with “wrongdoers” swiftly and mercilessly.

ObjectiveTo longitudinally assess brain microstructure and function in female varsity athletes participating in contact and noncontact sports.MethodsConcussion-free female rugby players (n = 73) were compared to age-matched (ages 18-23) female swimmers and rowers (n = 31) during the in- and off-season. Diffusion and resting-state fMRI (rs-fMRI) measures were the primary outcomes. The Sports Concussion Assessment Tool and head impact accelerometers were used to monitor symptoms and impacts, respectively.ResultsWe found cross-sectional (contact vs noncontact) and longitudinal (in- vs off-season) changes in white matter diffusion measures and rs-fMRI network connectivity in concussion-free contact athletes relative to noncontact athletes. In particular, mean, axial, …

Pragmatic Conservative Nationalism: The Coalition Avenir Quebec, Joshua Nahmias Jul 2020

Pragmatic Conservative Nationalism: The Coalition Avenir Quebec, Joshua Nahmias

MA Major Research Papers

The Coalition Avenir Quebec (CAQ) is a provincial political party that was founded in 2011 and formed the province’s government for the first time in 2018. The purpose of this major research project is to explain the origins and policy preferences of the CAQ. It will argue that the CAQ reflects a “pragmatic conservative nationalist” ideology, and that this is as much a result of a conscious political orientation as it is a necessity in Quebec’s politically moderate electoral landscape. The party is the ideological heir and the continuation of the centre-right faction of the Parti Québécois (PQ), most notably …

Opportunity Cost, Inattention And The Bidder's Curse, David J. Freeman, Erik O. Kimbrough, J. Philipp Reiss Jul 2020

Opportunity Cost, Inattention And The Bidder's Curse, David J. Freeman, Erik O. Kimbrough, J. Philipp Reiss

Economics Faculty Articles and Research

Auction winners sometimes suffer a “bidder’s curse”, paying more for an item at auction than the fixed price charged for an identical item by other sellers. This seemingly irrational behavior is puzzling because the information necessary to avoid overpaying would appear to be readily available to bidders, yet they seem to ignore it. To understand this behavior, we consider the bidders’ decisions whether to acquire information about the fixed price before bidding, in the presence of opportunity costs. Our theory introduces costly information acquisition into an auction model, with a fixed price aftermarket selling an identical good. When information about …

A Public Option For The Core, Yotam Harchol, Dirk Bergemann, Nick Feamster, Eric Friedman, Arvind Krishnamurthy, Aurojit Panda, Sylvia Ratnasamy, Michael Schapira, Scott Shenker

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper is focused not on the Internet architecture – as defined by layering, the narrow waist of IP, and other core design principles – but on the Internet infrastructure, as embodied in the technologies and organizations that provide Internet service. In this paper we discuss both the challenges and the opportunities that make this an auspicious time to revisit how we might best structure the Internet’s infrastructure. Currently, the tasks of transit-between-domains and last-mile-delivery are jointly handled by a set of ISPs who interconnect through BGP. In this paper we propose cleanly separating these two tasks. For transit, we …

Objectives Driven Participatory Evaluation Model, Dustin R. Saalman Jul 2020

Objectives Driven Participatory Evaluation Model, Dustin R. Saalman

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

The ability to complete program evaluations of educational programming is typically restricted by the availability of resources, such as time, money and a trained evaluator. Although not a replacement for trained evaluators, promoting evaluative capacity and evaluative thinking within an organization can help mitigate this gap between talent and resources. Participatory evaluation is purported to increase organizational learning and promote evaluative thinking within an organization (Cousins & Whitmore, 1998). Objectives oriented evaluation is an easily understood evaluation method which provides a refined focus program outcome (Madaus & Stufflebeam, 1989). Using an internal evaluation of a new faculty onboarding course at …

Religious Identity And Its Impact On Beliefs And Behaviors, Kaylise Algrim Jul 2020

Religious Identity And Its Impact On Beliefs And Behaviors, Kaylise Algrim

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

For many years, research into religion and environmentalism focused on affiliation with a religious institution as it correlated with environmental attitudes (Boyd, 1999; Hand & Van Liere, 1984). This perspective did not account for differences in religious attitudes among members of the same religion and also missed the ways religious identity can shape other views. Newer research into religious identity as a factor in environmentalism has highlighted religion as a personal and social construct which can positively influence environmental beliefs (Hedlund de- Witt et al., 2013; Garfield et al., 2014). This study used a psychosocial approach and surveyed 286 undergraduate …

"Not 'Just' A Barista": The Story Of Portland's College-Educated Baristas, Ned William Tilbrook

Dissertations and Theses

This paper examines graduate jobs/skills mismatch in craft occupations, through semi-structured interviews with college-educated baristas working in local and craft coffee shops in Portland, Oregon. This paper asks why college educated people work in such a role as it represents an interesting example of job/skills mismatch. Findings suggest that some see it as a good stop-gap on the way to something else, while others hope to use the skills they learned in studying for their degree to forge a career in the coffee industry. A desire to use these degree-relevant skills is prevalent throughout the sample, however many are still …

This policy analysis report captures how cities and countries value, define, and measure Whole Child Development (WCD) - and equivalent - both broadly and in the context of reaching those in extreme adversity. The WCD conceptual framework of this study refers to 11 key themes: values, life skills, social and emotional learning, spirituality, academic knowledge, student engagement, adult support, community, academically challenging learning, safe environments, and health. The report provides insights into the challenges experienced in embedding WCD in education systems and offers evidence around the growing recognition and momentum globally around WCD and holistic learning. One of the key …

On The Challenges Associated With The Study Of Police Use Of Deadly Force In The United States: A Response To Schwartz & Jahn, Justin Nix Jul 2020

On The Challenges Associated With The Study Of Police Use Of Deadly Force In The United States: A Response To Schwartz & Jahn, Justin Nix

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

In response to Gabriel Schwartz and Jaquelyn Jahn’s descriptive study, “Mapping fatal police violence across U.S. metropolitan areas: Overall rates and racial/ethnic inequalities, 2013–2017,” I provide three reflections. First, the framing of this issue is vitally important. Second, police-involved fatalities represent a nonrandom sample of all incidents involving police use of deadly force (i.e., physical force that causes or is likely to cause death), and unfortunately, we lack comprehensive data on use of deadly force that does not result in fatalities. Finally, to make sense of who is killed by the police, researchers must also identify who was exposed to …

Intimate Partner Violence Risk Assessment: The Additive Value Of Victim Reported Risk, Jennifer Joanne Johnson Jul 2020

Intimate Partner Violence Risk Assessment: The Additive Value Of Victim Reported Risk, Jennifer Joanne Johnson

Dissertations and Theses

Intimate partner violence (IPV) affects millions of people in the United States, causing negative generational consequences to the victim and the community. The criminal justice system has increased its preventative strategies to combat this issue through mandatory arrest laws and the use of risk assessment tools for determining the likelihood of offender recidivism. Risk factors included in standardized and actuarial risk assessment tools have been found to be relatively good predictors for violent recidivism.

This study assesses the predictive accuracy of risk factors through bivariate correlations and multiple logistic regression analysis. The risk factors analyzed include demographic information, mental health …

The Effect Of Fiction On Religious Studies Display Shelves In An Academic Library, Marissa Bischoff, Gerrit Van Dyk Jul 2020

The Effect Of Fiction On Religious Studies Display Shelves In An Academic Library, Marissa Bischoff, Gerrit Van Dyk

Faculty Publications

The religious studies librarians at Brigham Young University (BYU) began a book display research project to examine the circulation rates of religious studies titles placed on display and to specifically evaluate the impact of religious fiction on that display in an academic library. Student employees were tasked with curating the displays over several years and maintaining a spreadsheet with the titles displayed and resulting checkout rates. Religious fiction (from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saint tradition) circulated over 80% the first three years, higher than the religious nonfiction on display and the same genre in the stacks. In …

Pricing Climate Change Risk In Corporate Bonds, Elsa Allman Jul 2020

Pricing Climate Change Risk In Corporate Bonds, Elsa Allman

Publications and Research

This paper examines whether corporate bondholders price climate change risk. I find that firms exposed to higher sea level rise (SLR) across U.S. branch locations pay a premium when issuing bonds. Specifically, a one standard deviation increase in a firm’s SLR exposure is associated with a 2% increase of average yield spreads equivalent to 4 basis points. This effect is more pronounced for firms in industries vulnerable to extreme weather conditions, which are less spatially diversified, and issuing bonds with maturities ranging from 5 to 10 years. In addition, I find no evidence that credit rating agencies account for SLR …

"The Only Disability In Life Is A Bad Attitude": So-Called "Inspirational" Media In The Age Of Trump, Eve Bohakel Lee Jul 2020

"The Only Disability In Life Is A Bad Attitude": So-Called "Inspirational" Media In The Age Of Trump, Eve Bohakel Lee

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones

This study explores the reactions of ideologically divergent social media users to so-called “inspiration porn,” or mediated images of physically disabled persons doing ordinary—or extraordinary—activities, relegating those depicted to vehicles for the emotional or spiritual gratification of nondisabled or typically able (or, among disabled observers, differently so) persons. This is important because although a quarter of American adults identify as living with a disability themselves, ableism remains very internalized; others’ experience is still very voyeuristic when presented in this medium. The objective of this study is to describe an approximate correlation—either positive or negative—between the popularity of inspiration porn and …

‘Wars Of Others’: National Cleavages And Attitudes Toward External Conflicts, Efe Tokdemir, Seden Akcinaroglu, H. Ege Ozen, Ekrem Karakoc Jul 2020

‘Wars Of Others’: National Cleavages And Attitudes Toward External Conflicts, Efe Tokdemir, Seden Akcinaroglu, H. Ege Ozen, Ekrem Karakoc

Publications and Research

Why do individuals sympathize with others’ wars, an antecedent of the decision to become a foreign fighter? By collecting original public opinion data from Lebanon, in 2015, and Turkey in 2017, about the actors of conflict in Syria, we test the argument that an ethno-religious cleavage at home shapes the proclivity of individuals to support others’ wars. Individuals may perceive a war abroad as endangering political and social balance of power at home – and hence own survival. Therefore, when transnational identities map onto a national cleavage, as in the Sunni–Shia cleavage in Lebanon, and Turk – Kurd cleavage in …
