Predictors Of School Functioning And Problem Behaviors In Siblings Of Children With Autism, Sarah Elizabeth Jones

Social Work Theses - Archive

When a child has a sibling with a disability, siblings must learn to adapt to additional challenges and demands and may often be overlooked by their parents, teachers, and service providers. While research has demonstrated that the social and emotional development of siblings of children with ASD is impacted in the context of their homes and families, the impact on siblings in the school setting has been minimally examined. Using the Sibling Embedded Systems Framework, this study assesses the relationship between micro and mesosystem factors in relation to school behavioral and academic outcomes for siblings of children with ASD using …

Age-Friendly Airports: A Qualitative Study Of Older Adults Aged 55 And Older, Joanna Fatih Glover Aug 2020

Age-Friendly Airports: A Qualitative Study Of Older Adults Aged 55 And Older, Joanna Fatih Glover

Social Work Theses - Archive

As baby boomers are increasing in numbers and living longer, many older adults are continuing activities that bring pleasure and promote independence in their lives. Extant literature suggests an increase in air travel among older adults as well as benefits related to traveling in later life. However, their literature also reports a lack of “age-friendliness” at airports across the U.S. and the world. As older adults begin to travel more frequently, the age-friendliness of airports is important to understand because older adults want to continue to travel. For older adults to continue to do so, the age-friendliness of airports needs …

Swimming Upstream To Achieve The Dream: A Descriptive Phenomenological Study Of The Postsecondary Experiences Of Foster Care Alumni, Sharron Crear

Social Work Dissertations - Archive

Education has been deemed the "great equalizer" for the condition of man (Horace Mann, 1848). Studies have found that years of education and income are highly correlated--the higher the educational level, the higher the income (National Center for Education Statistics, 2017). Numerous studies highlight the benefits of attaining a college degree; however, college enrollment and graduation rates among young adults with foster care experience lag significantly behind those of their non-foster care peers. Despite increased policies and efforts at the federal, state, and local levels to improve the educational outcomes of this vulnerable population, poor educational outcomes are still prevalent. …

Me Or My Friends? Examining Sns Friend Activity's Impact On Applicant Perceptions, Dustin Kaleb Hightower Aug 2020

Me Or My Friends? Examining Sns Friend Activity's Impact On Applicant Perceptions, Dustin Kaleb Hightower

Psychology Theses - Archive

Cybervetting continues to be adopted by an increasing number of organizations each year, with approximately 43% of employers using social networking websites (SNSs) to screen job applicants (SHRM, 2016). Yet little attention has been given to how a profilee’s SNS friends influence cybervetter perceptions. As such, the current study examined how friend SNS content impacts perceptions of an applicant, thereby adding to the understanding of judgment mechanisms in cybervetting-based assessment. It was hypothesized that negatively perceived friend content would reduce perceptions of applicant suitability, whereas positively perceived friend content would increase perceptions of applicant suitability. Further, it was expected that …

Reconstraining Massive Pied-Piping In English: A Non-Interrogative Cp Analysis, Daniel Garrett Amy Aug 2020

Reconstraining Massive Pied-Piping In English: A Non-Interrogative Cp Analysis, Daniel Garrett Amy

Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive

This dissertation focuses on the distribution of "massive pied-piping" (Heck 2008) constructions in English. Compared to other forms of wh-movement and pied-piping, broadly speaking, massive pied-piping is limited in the environments in which it may occur. The primary goals of this dissertations are to examine (i) whether massive piped-piping is restricted to non-subordinated clauses (cf. wh-movement), (ii) what effect prosody has on relative clause interpretations, and (iii) how the distribution of massive pied-piping can be explained given a wider pattern of acceptability. To address these questions, I combine traditional syntactic and semantic judgments with two psycholinguistic experiments that utilize a …

Cultivating And Reporting Of Campus Threats, Louis K. Falk, Douglas Stoves, Audrey W. Falk, Hilda Silva

Communication Faculty Publications

The consumption of media has been established as one of the elements responsible for changing the general population’s perceptions. Specifically, cultivation theory (depending on the amount of media use) points to an enhanced representation of a characterization conveyed through the media. This depiction has the potential to create an inaccurate portrayal (stereotype) leading to an increased level of anxiety. The proliferation of reported incidents (real or perceived) associated with mass shootings in the U.S. over the last 20 years is an example. This paper traces the relatively recent coverage of mass shootings in the U.S. by the media and the …

A Mindfulness-Based Physical Activity Intervention: A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial, Margarita Sala

Psychology Theses and Dissertations

Introduction: The aim of this pilot randomized controlled trial was to assess the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy of an audio-recorded mindfulness-based physical activity intervention as compared to an active control condition. I also examined affective response and distress tolerance during exercise as two putative mediators of the intervention. Methods: Community participants (N = 50) were randomized to a mindfulness intervention or active control group. Results: The audio-recorded mindfulness-based physical activity intervention was acceptable (i.e., well liked, M = 7.94, SD = 1.67) and feasible (i.e., percentage of use, M = 83.94%, SD = 20.65%). The intervention also resulted in …

The Impact Of Social Media On The Self-Esteem Of Youth 10–17 Years Old: A Review Of The Literature, Jasmine M. Daniels Aug 2020

The Impact Of Social Media On The Self-Esteem Of Youth 10–17 Years Old: A Review Of The Literature, Jasmine M. Daniels

Dissertations

The world of technology has expanded quickly and vastly since its inception. The creation of social media sites and applications has changed the ways in which youth interact, connect, and share with one another. As the number of social media sites and applications increases, so does their use by adolescents. During adolescence, youth are undergoing the process of identity development and self-esteem is an important part of this development. During this developmental period, adolescents’ self-esteem is likely to be affected by the feedback they receive online through social media sites. There is limited research available that specifically evaluated the impact …

Ateneo School of Medicine and Public Health Publications

Background

Oral rehydration solution (ORS) is a form of oral rehydration therapy (ORT) for diarrhoea that has the potential to drastically reduce child mortality; yet, according to UNICEF estimates, less than half of children younger than 5 years with diarrhoea in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) received ORS in 2016. A variety of recommended home fluids (RHF) exist as alternative forms of ORT; however, it is unclear whether RHF prevent child mortality. Previous studies have shown considerable variation between countries in ORS and RHF use, but subnational variation is unknown. This study aims to produce high-resolution geospatial estimates of relative …

The Influence Of Childhood Trauma And Ptsd Symptoms On Attention And Adhd Symptoms In Adulthood: An Eeg Study, Kylie M. Jupp

USC Aiken Psychology Theses

Objective: The influence of childhood trauma on clinical and cognitive functioning, specifically attention, has a large research base. However, the majority of studies have examined response inhibition to measure attention, and very few studies have evaluated how childhood trauma influences attentional control behavior and brain activity. Additionally, I aimed to integrate the use of the Allostatic Load Theory (ALT) to examine the outcome of negative attentional outcomes through the input of traumatic stressors. I addressed the above limitation and incorporated the ALT by investigating the influence of childhood trauma, community violence, and PTSD symptoms on attention performance and brain activity …

School Psychologist's Perceptions Of System Readiness, Implementation, Effectiveness, And Impact On Role As Schools Transition Conflict Management Programs, Carleigh Fuhrman

Educational Specialist, 2020-current

This paper discusses educational systems change, specifically in regard to conflict management programs and discipline policies. Many students exhibit negative behaviors throughout their K-12 education and school psychologists are frequently involved in mediating those behaviors. Many schools have implemented programs such as Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and Restorative Practices in schools in hopes of preventing and reducing student’s negative behaviors. Both PBIS and Restorative Practices are intervention programs that teach decision-making and problem-solving skills (Ingraham et al., 2016), and shift the focus from reacting to negative behaviors with punitive consequences to focusing on strengthening desired, positive behaviors (Sprague, …

An Exploration Of High School Principals’ And Assistant Principals’ Perceptions Of Implementing Mental Health Curriculums In Schools, Jacqueline M. Billy

Educational Specialist, 2020-current

Mental health literacy is one’s knowledge of mental health conditions and their accompanying symptoms as well as their understanding of available treatments and mental health services. Virginia Bill SB953, signed into law in 2018, made mental health a mandated topic in health education for all ninth and tenth grade students. There are several Health Education Standards of Learning for Virginia Public Schools which are specifically aimed at increasing students’ mental health literacy. Many of the standards can be met through implementation of evidence-based curriculums focusing on mental health, known as mental health curriculums (MHC). MHC are designed to increase mental …

The Effects Of Positive Student-Teacher Relationships On Students' Perceptions Of School Safety, Victoria H. Bunting

Educational Specialist, 2020-current

Previous research has resulted in positive information regarding the student-teacher relationship and perceptions of student safety, from the perspective of adults. A number of studies have investigated relationship building and student safety, teacher characteristics, school connectedness, and perceptions of safety. However, previous studies have not included the stories and perceptions from students themselves. This study aims to use interviews conducted with middle school students to inform the perspective of middle school students on their student-teacher relationships and perceptions of school safety. Each participant was asked questions related to their feelings of safety at school, current relationships with teachers, their ideal …

The Affordable Care Act In The States: Fragmented Politics, Unstable Policy, Daniel Beland, Philip Rocco, Alex Waddan

Political Science Faculty Research and Publications

Many argue that the frustrated implementation of the 2010 Affordable Care Act (ACA) stems from the unprecedented level of political polarization that has surrounded the legislation. This article draws attention to the law's “institutional DNA” as a source of political struggle in the 50 states. As designed, in the context of US federalism, the law fractured authority in ways that has opened up the possibility of contestation and confusion. The successful implementation of the ACA varies not only across state lines but also across the various components of the law. In particular, opponents of the ACA have experienced their greatest …

The Experiences Of African American Men At Predominantly White Institutions Of Higher Education, After Successfully Transferring From A Community College, Keenan King Aug 2020

The Experiences Of African American Men At Predominantly White Institutions Of Higher Education, After Successfully Transferring From A Community College, Keenan King

Dissertations

African American men complete post-secondary education among the lowest rates of any other subgroup in higher education (Brooms & Davis, 2017; Farmer & Hope, 2015; Palmer, Wood, Dancy, & Strayhorn, 2014; Warde, 2008). This study focuses on addressing this problem by attempting to understand the experiences of African American men who successfully navigate a higher education pipeline from community college to a four-year, predominantly White institution (PWI). Half of all African American men enter higher education at the community college level (Villavicencio, Bhattacharya, & Guidry, 2013); therefore, community college plays a key role in shaping their experiences in higher education …

Relationship Of Posterior Intracranial Venous Structures In Homo Sapiens And Handedness, Brianne Finley Aug 2020

Relationship Of Posterior Intracranial Venous Structures In Homo Sapiens And Handedness, Brianne Finley

Theses and Dissertations

The transverse sinus spans the endocranial surface of the occipital bone and ultimately transmits deoxygenated blood to the sigmoid sinus and jugular vein en route to the heart. This paired sinus tends to be more defined on either the left or right side in human crania. Left and right dominance, or the use of one side of the body more than the other, leaves traces on the human skeleton. Methods to determine handedness upon examination of various elements of the human skeleton mostly focus on the use of the extremities, while little research exists examining the skull for evidence of …
